Abstract

A re-evaluation of the Molten Salt Breeder Reactor concept has revealed problems related to its safety and to the complexity of the reprocessing considered. A reflection is carried out anew in view of finding innovative solutions leading to the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor concept. Several main constraints are established and serve as guides to parametric evaluations. These then give an understanding of the influence of important core parameters on the reactor's operation. The aim of this paper is to discuss this vast research domain and to single out the Molten Salt Reactor configurations that deserve further evaluation., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of an extensive beam time experiment associated to a long process of analysis ans validation. With a slowing down spectrometer associated to a pulsed neutron source, it is possible to determine good cross section profile in an energy range from 0.1 eV to 40 keV. These measurements performed at ISN (Grenoble) with neutron source GENEPI requires only small quantities of matter (as small as 0.1 g) and about one day of beam per target., Comment: 0 pages, 6 tables, to submit in NIM-A

Abstract

A new integral measurement of the 7Li neutron induced elastic scattering cross section was determined in a wide neutron energy range. The measurement was performed on the LPSC-PEREN experimental facility using a heterogeneous graphite-LiF slowing-down time spectrometer coupled with an intense pulsed neutron generator (GENEPI-2). This method allows the measurement of the integral elastic scattering cross section in a slowing-down neutron spectrum. A Bayesian approach coupled to Monte Carlo calculations was applied to extract naturalC, 19F and 7Li elastic scattering cross sections.

Resume La spasticite est un probleme auquel est souvent confronte le medecin reeducateur. Une evaluation precise de celle-ci permet d'apprecier l'efficacite des mesures therapeutiques employees. Nous avons, dans cette etude, essaye de mettre au point une methode d'evaluation a partir de l'electromyographie de surface. L'etude a porte sur 25 patients hemiplegiques, chaque patient etant son propre temoin. Le traitement du signal retenu a ete l'analyse temporelle. Nous presentons les premiers resultats de cette etude.

Abstract

International audience; If the use of fossil fuels is to be limited to curtail greenhouse gas emissions, fission nuclear energy is, along with new renewable energies, one of the primary energy sources able to respond significantly to the increasing worldwide demand. In this context, it is necessary to design and evaluate new generations of nuclear reactors as defined by the Gen IV International Forum. The Energy and Nuclear Engineering (GEN) curriculum of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Physique de Grenoble (ENSPG), one of the nine engineering schools of the Grenoble Institute of Technology (INPG), includes a balanced blend of basic courses in energy, nuclear and thermal hydraulic engineering, together with the corresponding engineering sciences to cover the technological aspects. The objective is to train engineers who shall master not only nuclear engineering for the production of electricity but, more broadly, energy and nuclear technologies and their various application fields.

Abstract

Molten salt reactors, in the configuration presented here and called Thorium Molten Salt Reactor (TMSR), are particularly well suited to fulfil the criteria chosen by the Generation IV forum, and may be operated in simplified and safe conditions in the Th/233U fuel cycle with fluoride salts. Amongst all MSR configurations in the thorium cycle, many studies have highlighted the configurations with no moderator in the core as simple and very promising. Since 233U does not exist on earth and is not being produced today, we aim at designing a critical MSR able to burn the Plutonium and the Minor Actinides produced in the current operating reactors, and consequently to convert this Plutonium into 233U. This leads to closing the current fuel cycle thanks to TMSRs started with transuranic elements on a Thorium base, i.e. started in the Th/Pu fuel cycle, similarly to fast neutron reactors operated in the U/Pu fuel cycle. We will detail optimizations of this transition between the reactors of second and third generations to the Thorium cycle. Such a transition is based on a fleet of TMSRs with no moderator in the core, including TMSRs started with Plutonium and TMSRs directly started with 233U. We developed parametric studies to optimize these TMSRs, amongst which the study presented here, based on one of the main TMSR parameters: the percentage of heavy nuclei in the fuel salt of the TMSR configuration, which modifies the moderation ratio of the reactor and thus influences both the initial fissile inventory and the spectrum of the reactor. We analyze the characteristics of each reactorconfiguration, in terms of deterministic safety parameters, fissile matter inventory, salt reprocessing, radiotoxicity and waste production, and finally deployment capacities.

Abstract

International audience; Accelerator-driven systems (ADS) may allow the transmutation of themost radiotoxic nuclear waste. They consist of the coupling of an intensehigh-energy proton beam, hitting a high atomic number target, and asub-critical reactor core. For safety reasons, an on-line accurate and robustcore reactivity monitoring is mandatory. The beam current delivered by theaccelerator and the power level, or neutron flux, of the reactor core arestrongly correlated through a proportionality relationship which has to beinvestigated, since, among different techniques, it could give access to anyreactivity change.To demonstrate the feasibility of such an on-line reactivity monitoring, anexperimental program is planned at the YALINA facility, in Byelorussia, inthe framework of the EUROTRANS Integrated Project (6th FP). At thissub-critical installation, the incident 14 MeV neutron flux is produced by adeuteron beam impinging on a 3H target. Due to the consumption of the 3Htarget, the deuteron beam current will not remain proportional to the neutronproduction-rate over time. Therefore, in order to monitor the neutronproduction rate, we developed a new detector device. It is composed of athin CH2 foil, followed by three Si detectors. This telescope will be installeda few meters downstream the 3H target, at 0°. The detection method is basedon the conversion of neutrons into recoiling protons, which are thendetected by the three Si. Their thicknesses and thresholds have been chosenso that the most energetic protons, associated with the 14 MeV neutrons, arestopped in the last stage of the telescope. Requiring triple coincidences inthe telescope enable then to select events originating only from neutronsproduced in the d+3H reactions. Doing so, the correlation between a changeof the source intensity and the flux will be kept and the proportionalityconstant can be investigated and determined (via a calibration) and thereforeused to detect any reactivity change of the sub-critical medium.In this contribution, we will present the performances of this new neutronbeam monitoring device. They were studied during a test experiment done atthe GENEPI neutron source of the PEREN installation, in France.Comparisons with simulations will also be presented.

Abstract

International audience; The Molten Salt Reactor is one of the systems studied as a Generation IV reactor. Its main characteristic is the strong coupling between neutronics and salt reprocessing. Such nuclear reactors use a liquid fuel which is also the coolant. Elements produced during the reactor's operation, like Fission Products (FP) or TransUranians, modify the neutronic balance of the reactor by capturing neutrons. As the fuel is liquid, samples can be extracted and reprocessed to remove the poisoning elements, without stopping reactor operation. This reprocessing includes two components: a bubbling system within the reactor which extracts the gaseous and metallic FPs quickly and a slower external unit that extracts the other FPs. A fluorination removes Uranium to reinject it immediately in the core. The rest of the salt is then treated in a decicated reprocessing unit. A salt volume equal to the core volume is cleaned in several months. We have studied the influence of different reprocessing rates on the reactor's behaviour. This mainly affects the breeding ratio, which represents the ratio of Thorium-232 converted into Uranium-233 over Uranium-233 burnt. By considering both the possibilities in chemistry and the neutronic impacts presented here, our aim is to work out an efficient, reliable and realistic reprocessing scheme

La re-évaluation du concept de Molten Salt Breeder Reactor a fait apparaître des problèmes liés à la sûreté et à la complexité du retraitement. Une nouvelle réflexion est menée afin de trouver des solutions et ainsi d'aboutir au concept du Thorium Molten Salt Reactor. Plusieurs contraintes principales sont établies et vont servir de guides aux études paramétriques. Celles-ci permettent alors de comprendre l'influence de paramètres importants du coeur sur le comportement du réacteur. Le but de cet article est de présenter ce vaste domaine de recherche et d'indiquer quelles configurations intéressantes de Réacteurs à Sels Fondus peuvent être étudiées plus avant.

Abstract

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of an extensive beam time experiment associated to a long process of analysis ans validation. With a slowing down spectrometer associated to a pulsed neutron source, it is possible to determine good cross section profile in an energy range from 0.1 eV to 40 keV. These measurements performed at ISN (Grenoble) with neutron source GENEPI requires only small quantities of matter (as small as 0.1 g) and about one day of beam per target.

Abstract

To operate systems such as ADSs, kinetics parameters will have to be monitored. It is one of the aim of the MUSE experimental program to investigate techniques to do so. Taking advantage of piloting the accelerator GENEPI coupled to the MASURCA reactor it is possible, by varying suddenly the source intensity from a high to a low level, to access the ρ/βeff parameter. Together with a measurement of the prompt multiplication factor kp it is then possible to obtain the absolute values of βeff and keff of the reactor. This method applied for two reactivity levels shows very good agreement with classical measurements performed in critical configurations.

Abstract

We built a low background detector to measure the νee− elastic cross section at low energy. The detector has been installed close to a nuclear reactor in Bugey and it is running since almost one year. After having reduced the electron background by more than 2 orders of magnitude we are now taking data to be sensitive to a neutrino magnetic moment in the region below 10−10 Bohr magnetons.
