Cathodic arc evaporation CrN double layer coatings were deposited onto tool steels in two steps by industrial apparatus. Microblasting was performed on CrN first layer in order to remove metallic droplets and surface defects and to promote the adhesion of the second layer. Surface morphology effects were assessed by a scanning electron microscope coupled with Image analyser software. Nanoindentation and scratch tests were performed to evaluate the changes of coating adhesion and mechanical properties. Structure, microstructure and residual stress were evaluated by X-ray diffraction. In particular, by means of Cu and Cr wavelengths, the residual stresse of both steel substrates and coatings was calculated. The results show that microblasting has no effect on coating hardness and slightly affects the adhesion of the coating to the substrate. On the other hand, microblasting increases coating resistance to cohesive failure and the substrate compressive stress at the coating interface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Pure TiO2 and TiO2 nanotubular arrays were successfully sensitized. Nanotubular arrays were prepared by electrochemical anodization of thin films of Ti and of Ti-Nb deposited on alumina substrates with two different roughness. Morphological characterization and functional properties are presented. The gas sensing properties of TiO2 and TiO2 nanotubes with different gases have been tested in a wide range of operating temperatures. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Supported Fe 2 O 3 /WO 3 nanocomposites were fabricated by an original vapor phase approach, involving the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of Fe 2 O 3 on Ti sheets and the subsequent radio frequency (RF)-sputtering of WO 3 . Particular attention was dedicated to the control of the W/Fe ratio, in order to tailor the composition of the resulting materials. The target systems were analyzed by the joint use of complementary techniques, that is, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), and optical absorption spectroscopy. The results showed the uniform decoration of α-Fe 2 O 3 (hematite) globular particles by tiny WO 3 aggregates, whose content could be controlled by modulations of the sole sputtering time. The photocatalytic degradation of phenol in the liquid phase was selected as a test reaction for a preliminary investigation of the system behavior in wastewater treatment applications. The system activity under both UV and Vis light illumination may open doors for further material optimization in view of real-world end-uses.

This paper reports the results on the use of an innovative inert, based on stabilized fly ash from municipal solid waste incineration as a filler for polypropylene. The starting material, which contains large quantities of leachable Pb and Zn, was stabilized by means of an innovative process using rice husk ash as a waste silica source, together with other fly ashes, such as coal fly ash and flue gas desulfurization residues. The use of all waste materials to obtain a new filler makes the proposed technology extremely sustainable and competitive. The new composites, obtained by using the stabilized material as a filler for polypropylene, were characterized and their mechanical properties were also investigated. A comparison with a traditional polypropylene and calcium carbonate based compound was also done. This research activity was realized in the frame of the COSMOS-RICE project, financed by the EU Commission.

Electrochemical anodization of a titanium film on a Kapton HN substrate leads to the formation of closely packed aligned nanotubes, whose shape can be finely tuned by tailoring the anodization parameters. An amorphous-to-anatase phase transition is induced on nanotubes by annealing at 350 °C. The nanotubes are applied as photoanodes in flexible dye-sensitized solar cells (N719 dye; I3-/I- redox couple), resulting in a photoconversion efficiency of up to 3.5% under simulated sunlight irradiation air mass 1.5 global (AM 1.5G)., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
