Establishing social networks can be extremely challenging when international students, particularly those of color, move to a new academic and social environment. We examine the perceptions of social networks among first-year international students of color and how these networks affect their experiences at a predominantly White institution (PWI). This study illuminates participants' relationships with U.S. domestic students and the power of language, culture, and shared experiences through a longitudinal narrative inquiry. Implications for practice and recommendations for future research are described in-depth for practitioners.

This qualitative study explored how U.S. higher education/student affairs (HESA) master's graduate preparation programs and curriculum socialized graduates for full time HESA work abroad post-graduation. Participants revealed that the formal curriculum was U.S.-centric in classroom conversations, course projects, and electives. The informal curriculum offered the most direct international-related learning opportunities such as study abroad, practicum, and assistantships. The most pervasive aspect was the hidden curriculum including limited application of U.S.-based theories and the support for job searching. Implications for practice include deliberate exposure to internationally-focused opportunities in and out of the classroom. In addition, professional associations may provide valuable connections to assist in graduate students' socialization for full time HESA work abroad.

Faculty members must employ pedagogical practices that foster humanizing learning environments for graduate Students of Color who have been marginalized and othered in higher education. Methodologically using narrative inquiry, this paper describes graduate Students' of Color stories in higher education/student affairs hybrid graduate preparation programs to understand how faculty contribute to humanizing and critical pedagogy. The findings highlight three central pedagogical strategies faculty used in hybrid classrooms that graduate Students' of Color named as most effective: (1) taught to transgress against racism and oppression, (2) emphasized dialogic pedagogy strategies, and (3) encouraged collaboration inside and outside of the classroom. This study highlights critical pedagogies for student engagement and is a call-to-action for higher education to center humanizing praxis in hybrid learning environments and beyond.

STEM education in Vietnam is prioritized, yet effective learning may be difficult for students attending transnational universities. The purpose of this study is to examine the self-regulated learning experiences of STEM undergraduate students attending a collaborative transnational university in Vietnam. Challenges included English language instruction and STEM-specific terminology. Despite barriers to their learning, students describe strategies for navigating their learning process. Strategies included extensive rereading of the material, using Google to look up new terms/ideas or to translate words, asking instructors for translation, and reviewing online resources. Implications for practice include instructors providing more detailed feedback and guidance and leveraging technology use for learning.

Race in the US is shaped by a history rooted in settler colonialism, colorism, and nativism. Yet, international students are typically excluded from most conversations about race and racialization. Using Fries-Britt, George Mwangi, and Peralta's (2014) emergent framework on learning race in US contexts, we examined international students of Color's racialized experiences at a predominantly White institution, including how their racialized experiences were often shaped simultaneously by issues of race and racism in the US, as well as preconceived notions of what their US collegiate experiences would be. Findings indicated that most students did not expect to experience racism in the US; however, after a critical incident on campus, many participants had to navigate how they conceptualized race and racialization as international students of Color in the US.

Mental health issues in faculty-led short-term study abroad (FLSTSA) courses are becoming increasingly prevalent. To date, little is known about the role mental health issues play in study abroad courses, including the implications for student affairs practice. This study examines the role of mental health issues in faculty-led short-term study abroad courses, from the perspective of the faculty instructors. Findings from this study provide a nuanced understanding of how student mental health issues shape study abroad experiences for the student experiencing mental health issues abroad, other students, and the faculty instructors.

The purpose of this study is to examine Student Affairs Professionals' (SAPs') experiences with campus racial climate at predominantly white institutions (PWIs) including how SAPs make meaning of racialized incidents on campus. This study employed the multi-contextual model for diverse learning environments (MMDLE) and critical incident technique (CIT) as frameworks and used a multiple case study methodological approach analyzing 12 SAPs' experiences with campus racial climate using a constant comparative data analysis strategy. Findings from this study include how SAPs' overall experiences with campus racial climate encompass a "business as usual" mindset from campus constituents. Participants shared how the current political climate in relation to issues of race has shaped incidents on campus and dynamics regarding racialized incidents. As a result, SAPs often processed these occurrences with trusted peers and colleagues due to fear of retaliation. Participants, specifically those of Color, noted their challenges of balancing institutional racism, racial battle fatigue, and microaggressions while processing and making meaning of racialized incidents. In-depth implications and recommendations for practice are described to prepare and support SAPs in these vital roles on campus.

Through a narrative inquiry study, we sought to understand how 12 student affairs professionals (SAPs) experienced whiteness and perceived the influence of whiteness on campus responses to racialized incidents. We used components of critical whiteness studies (CWS) and critical race theory (CRT) as a theoretical underpinning to disrupt the dominant narratives that center whiteness in practices, policies, and spaces at predominantly white institutions. We used a critical resistance analysis (CRA) process to demonstrate how SAPs' narratives served as counternarratives, antenarratives, and resistance to institutional actors who refuse to acknowledge and name racism. Our findings illuminate whiteness as a racial ideology shedding light on the way whiteness is normalized, advantaged by the dominant group, and perpetuated through color evasive and race-neutral responses to racialized incidents. Several implications related to this work are described as there is a need to openly name racialized incidents that occur on campus and create safe spaces for SAPs of Color and Students of Color. Additional recommendations for theory and future research are offered.

Transnational education and English medium instruction (EMI) has grown in Asia in response to rapid globalisation. As a result, Vietnam has invested in creating new model universities that partner with international institutions as a way to supply the demand for quality higher education. Yet, few studies examine the influence of EMI on student learning, particularly within the Vietnamese context. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to examine the influence of EMI on the learning experiences of students attending three transnational universities in Vietnam. Based on participants' experiences, a model was created that highlighted specific areas that affected student learning: speaking and writing English in classes, limitations of instructors speaking English, and the 'double barrier' of English language, and discipline-based concepts learning at transnational universities. Recommendations for practice include creating intentional out-of-class learning opportunities and promoting active learning strategies as ways to facilitate student learning at transnational universities who use EMI.

The influence of whiteness on campus spaces is perhaps unsurprising, given that student affairs professionals (SAPs) often normalize ideologies and practices around whiteness (Cabrera et al., 2016, 2017). Whiteness is often demonstrated in how SAPs advocate (or not) for Students of Color and respond to racialized incidents that occur all too often within campus communities. In this paper, the authors bring together their perspectives to offer insight into how whiteness informs SAPs' response to racialized incidents and advocacy for Students of Color. They explicitly speak to SAPs in student involvement roles, as they all have experience studying and working in these functional areas.

The increased enrollment of students with mental health needs in U.S. higher education, paired with increasing emphasis on study abroad participation has led campus mental health professionals to consider how their services might extend to serve students with mental health needs who are studying abroad . When it comes to faculty led courses, instructors can play a key role in providing on-the-ground support for students experiencing mental health challenges. The findings from this study provide key insights that college mental health professionals can use to better understand and support these instructors as they serve on the front lines of addressing students' mental health needs while they are away from campus. In particular, our findings point to key ways that college mental health professionals can partner with education abroad offices to provide effective pre-departure training and in-country support for faculty instructors.

The purpose of this study is to illuminate international students of Color's experiences with a campus racial incident at a predominately White institution (PWI). This study emerged after the release of a YouTube video from a self-proclaimed White supremacist at the participants' institution, who made comments such as "I am the most active white nationalist in [the state]." In this study, we seek to answer the question: How does a campus racialized incident affect international students of Color's experience and perceptions of the campus climate at a PWI? The experiences of this population must be considered, especially due to the rise in incidents on campuses that are related to race, racism, and nativism. Findings from this study include how participants made sense of the incident from personal, institutional, national, and transnational perspectives. Participants share their concerns with discrimination and campus safety, confusion about free speech and institutional responses, and communication with family back home. Implications for practice include how institutions can provide support to international students of color, who have intersecting identities related to race, ethnicity, language, and religion, as they navigate campus racialized incidents in the United States.

Meeting the food requirements of international students is one of the many responsibilities of campus dining services that can, if fulfilled well, contribute to the success and retention of these students. Colleges and universities are continuing to diversify their enrollment with the recruitment of international students. Because many of these institutions require first-year students to live on campus, most international students live in residence halls and must purchase meal plans at some point during their collegiate career. The findings of this paper illuminate the food-related experiences of international students living on campus in their first year. Food quality, cultural differences, and the impact on future living decisions are discussed. Program directors at community colleges must navigate institutional rhetoric to effectively support Men of Color. This study considers how administrators often exhibit a non-performative commitment to diversity, in that stated commitment might not equate to action. Utilizing a framework grounded in critical race theory and cognitive frames regarding diversity, deficit, and equity, the authors of the study interviewed directors of men of color programs to explore their administrators' commitments to support the work. They also explored the ways that diversity rhetoric affected the success of their programs. Findings revealed that rhetoric often took the place of tangible action, that diversity rhetoric might contradict directors' experiences, and that directors regularly acted as commodities to do the work of diversity with little support. Through this research, the authors offer several implications related to the need for more explicit institution-wide practices that center on equity-mindedness and move past generic frames about diversity. Hate crimes across the country are becoming more prevalent, and there are growing concerns for higher education and college campuses. White supremacy has been noted as a potential driving force escalating hate and discrimination at disproportionate levels, especially for Black students on predominantly white campuses. This qualitative study described the murder of 2nd Lieutenant Richard Collins III by a white supremacist student, Sean Urbanski at a bus stop at the University of Maryland College Park. I used critical race theory in education and critical race methodology to analyze Black graduate students' counternarratives and interrogations of a hate crime through semi-structured interviews. I described how the juxtaposition of this hate crime influenced campus and national conversations about Black students' proximity to white supremacy. Lastly, participants' counternarratives attested to widespread trauma, which adds a new layer to existing literature on Black graduate students' experiences. Community College Men of Color Initiatives (CCMCIs) are increasingly popular strategies utilized to promote retention and completion among Men of Color (MOC). CCMCI directors offer a unique positionality in understanding how their identities, institutional contexts, and power dynamics affect their design of programs and participating students. Using a critical phenomenological approach, the authors of this study explore the lived experiences of CCMCI directors in conceptualizing, implementing, and assessing these initiatives.

With hardly any empirical research investigating how others view college students with criminal records (CSCRs) in education, this study seeks to contribute to the literature. Particularly, the researchers utilize a case study to explore college administrators' perceptions and beliefs about CSCRs and whether they believe their institution is an inclusive environment. The researchers offer implications that can help administrators create a more inclusive and equitable environment.

The purpose of this study was to explore the role of mentoring and how it shapes university presidents in higher education. Using phenomenological case studies to understand the lived experiences of university presidents, we analyzed data from eleven interviews. Drawing on tenets of Zachary's Four Phases of Mentoring, this study reflects the ways in which university presidents were mentored including the effect that mentoring has on executive leadership preparation and success. This study's findings can inform our understanding of mentoring and the importance of graduate preparation programs, executive leadership programs and organizations, and professional associations for the university presidency.

The authors investigated 12 student affairs professionals' experiences with political climate across five predominantly white institutions using a multiple case study constant comparative approach. This qualitative, descriptive single case study examined Black graduate students' perceptions of campus racial climate at a predominantly white institution (PWI) and how they were shaped by a president's response to racialized incidents. A greater understanding of how Black graduate students' narratives reveal how whiteness inhabits the PWI and the president's responses to racism presented. Guided by the Multi-contextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments (MMDLE) and Critical Race Theory, I unpack whether or not Black graduate students are prioritized in presidents' responses to racialized incidents and larger campus racial climate conversations. This study's findings further illustrate the significance of the role of the presidency when addressing issues of race and racism, and how their responses have the power to disrupt or harm both the personal experiences of individuals and the broader campus racial climate for Black graduate students. Guided by Hurtado et al.'s (2012) Multi-Contextual Model for Diverse Learning Environments, this qualitative case study examined Black graduate students' perceptions of a university president's responses to racialized incidents. Data were analyzed on an institutional level through institutional documents and presidential statements and individually through interviews with 12 Black graduate students from the University of Maryland, College Park. The findings were displayed through narrative summaries and demonstrate how Black graduate students felt othered, marginalized, and silenced due to the president's responses to racialized incidents. Findings show the lack of institutional response strategies that the president used and how participants viewed the president's responses to racialized incidents as untimely, inadequate, and inappropriate. The president's responses through campus statements underscored nonperformative and anti-Blackness rhetoric from the participants' vantage point, displaying a lack of actionoriented language, next steps, and strategies to assist them during the aftermath of the incidents. This study further illustrates the significance of the presidency's role when addressing race and racism issues and how their responses have the power to disrupt or harm the personal lived experiences of Black graduate students. The anti-critical race theory movement has caused educators strife and fear nationally. In these current socio-political times, faculty are navigating unprecedented experiences of racism as they teach and research critical race theory. Through our work, we examined 40 faculty experiences challenging legislation at a national, state, and institutional level. This conceptual piece uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a way to recognize systemic inequities within sorority and fraternity life (SFL) communities, and to advance meaningful change on college campuses. We engage histories, literature, and current events to aid practitioners and scholars in deeper considerations around antiracist education in action. Further, we provide an accompanying case study to offer practical considerations for SFL practitioners, campus administrators, and scholars seeking to engage antiracist work within these communities. Black student leaders often experience issues of race and racism. The prevalence of COVID-19 has further complicated these narratives and exposed additional areas of microaggressions and mistreatment. This study uses critical race theory in education and critical race methodology to understand what 13 Black student leaders' stories of race and racism reveal about higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants demonstrated their intense experiences with racism, disclosed the inequitable university policies and practices, and described the influence of social media on issues of race and racism. As a result of these stories, we offer implications for practice and policy on how higher education leaders can address systemic racism and critical issues affecting Black student leaders in the aftermath of COVID-19.
