Abstract

Efficient artificial photosynthesis systems are currently realized as catalyst- and surfacefunctionalized photovoltaic tandem- and triple-junction devices, enabling photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation while simultaneously recycling CO2 and generating hydrogen as a solar fuel for storable renewable energy. Although PEC systems also bear advantages for the activation of dinitrogen - such as a high system tunability with respect to the electrocatalyst integration and a directly controllable electron flux to the anchoring catalyst through the adjustability of incoming irradiation - only a few PEC devices have been developed and investigated for this purpose. We have developed a series of photoelectrodeposition procedures to deposit mixed-metal electrocatalyst nanostructures directly on the semiconductor surface for light-assisted dinitrogen activation. These electrocatalyst compositions containing Co, Mo and Ru in different atomic ratios follow previously made recommendations of metal compositions for dinitrogen reduction and exhibit different physical properties. XPS studies of the photoelectrode surfaces reveal that our electrocatalyst films are to a large degree nitrogen-free after their fabrication, which is generally difficult to achieve with traditional magnetron sputtering or e-beam evaporation techniques. Initial chronoamperometric measurements of the p-InP photoelectrode coated with the Co-Mo alloy electrocatalyst show higher photocurrent densities in the presence of N2(g) than in the presence of Ar at -0.09 V vs RHE. Indications of successful dinitrogen activation have also been found in consecutive XPS studies, where both, N 1s and Mo 3d spectra, reveal evidence of nitrogen-metal interactions.

14. Protein film voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry of the electron acceptor site in Photosystem II

Abstract

The key reaction of oxygenic photosynthesis, the light-driven oxidation of water, is carried out by Photosystem II (PSII), a light-driven water-plastoquinone oxidoreductase. Photosystem II is a multi-cofactor protein and its energetic characterization is quite a difficult undertaking. Electrochemical approaches play an important role as a tool for completing the energetic picture and for carrying out fundamental studies of the enzyme. In this work, two electrochemical methods have been applied to study the electron acceptor site of the Photosystem II: spectroelectrochemistry and protein film voltammetry. The first part focuses on the re-measurement of the midpoint potential of the primary quinone electron acceptor, QA, in PSII core complexes isolated from Thermosynechococcus elongatus and in PSII enriched membranes from spinach using an optical transparent thin layer (OTTLE) cell. The obtained results show that the bicarbonate anion, ligated to the non-heme iron at the electron acceptor site in close proximity to QA, plays a significant role in controlling the redox properties of the QA/QA--couple. This finding explains various controversies about existing literature values of the QA/QA-midpoint potential. The second part describes investigations of photocurrents generated by Photosystem II in metal oxide hybrid systems. PSII isolated from T. elongatus was immobilized onto nanostructured titanium dioxide/indium tin oxide electrodes (TiO2/ITO) and the origin of photocurrent upon illumination was studied. Using conditions in which PSII was immobilized as a monolayer, it was demonstrated that direct electron transfer occurs from the redox cofactor QA to the electrode surface, but that the electron transfer through the metal oxide is the rate-limiting step. Redox mediators enhance the photocurrent by taking electrons from the TiO2 surface to the ITO and not from PSII. Furthermore, the origin of cathodic photocurrents (i.e. electron flow from the electrode) was investigated. The results indicate that a one-electron reduction of oxygen to the superoxide anion radical (O₂·⁻) occurs at the ITO surface in darkness when an external bias lower than +300 mV vs NHE was applied. The findings can explain the light-driven and catalytic nature of this current by the fact that the reduction of O₂·⁻ occurs at the non-heme iron, which is driven by the photo-reduction of QA.

31. SolEn for a Sustainable Future: Developing and Teaching a Multidisciplinary Course on Solar Energy to Further Sustainable Education in Chemistry

Abstract

The high demand for the integration of sustainable topics into university curricula presents new challenges for the way chemistry is traditionally taught. New teaching concepts are required that consider and connect different disciplines to achieve a higher student awareness of the importance of these topics for humanity, the environment, and the future of our planet. This article describes a uniquely multidisciplinary graduate course on solar energy; the course may serve as an example of how to incorporate sustainable topics into chemistry programs, and as a starting point from which to build for others. It combines different scientific, industrial, political, and humanitarian approaches to the topic and provides a broad overview of one of the main future energy resources. New teaching methods are introduced, combined, and evaluated with respect to their effectiveness for a sustainable education within science and, in particular, chemistry. The success of this new course concept is demonstrated by high student satisfaction in a trial course evaluation and impressive exam results.

Abstract

This dissertation aims to better understand the evolution of single hydrogen gas bubbles evolved during the water electrolysis at microelectrodes. In particular, the growth and detachment processes were studied in detail experimentally by means of electrochemical and optical methods in terrestrial, micro-, and hypergravity conditions. The combination of microelectrode and sulfuric acid promoting the bubble coalescence results in a periodical growth and the detachment of single bubbles. This provides a systematic view on the phenomena under study. A shadowgraphy system was used to provide general insight into the bubble behaviour, while Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) was used for the flow velocity measurements around the growing hydrogen bubble. By applying high electric potentials considerably exceeding that in industrial electrolysers, it is possible to analyse the evolution of hydrogen bubbles under extreme conditions and for a wide range of electrolyte concentrations, overall shedding more light on bubble dynamics in general, and especially the underlying balance of forces. The growth of single hydrogen bubbles at micro-electrodes was studied in an acidic electrolyte over a wide range of concentrations and cathodic potentials. New bubble growth regimes were identified which differ in terms of whether the bubble evolution proceeds in the presence of a monotonic or oscillatory variation in the electric current and a carpet of microbubbles underneath the bubble. Key features such as the growth law of the bubble radius, the dynamics of the microbubble carpet, the onset time of the oscillations and the oscillation frequencies were characterised as a function of the concentration and electric potential. Furthermore, the system's response to jumps in the cathodic potential was studied. 38. Cathodic NH₄⁺ leaching of nitrogen impurities in CoMo thin-film electrodes in aqueous acidic solutions

Abstract

Electrocatalytic reduction of dinitrogen (N₂) to ammonium (NH₄⁺) in acidic aqueous solutions was investigated at ambient temperature and pressure using a cobalt–molybdenum (CoMo) thin-film electrode prepared by magnetron reactive sputtering. Increased concentrations of ammonium ions (NH₄⁺) were consistently detected in the electrolyte using ion chromatography (IC) after constant-potential electrolysis at various potentials (≤−0.29 V vs. RHE). Using a newly developed analytical method based on ammonia derivatization, performing the experiments with ¹⁵N₂-labelled gas led however to the detection of increased ¹⁴NH₄⁺ concentrations instead of ¹⁵NH₄⁺. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis of the electrode surface revealed the presence of Mo N and Mo–NH_x species. Several contamination sources were identified that led to substantial increases in the concentration of ammonium ions, including ¹⁵NH₃ impurities in ¹⁵N₂ gas. The observed ammonium concentrations can be consistently ascribed to leaching of nitrogen (¹⁴N) impurities incorporated in the CoMo film during the sputtering process. Researchers in the field are therefore urged to adopt extended protocols to identify and eliminate sources of ammonia contamination and to very carefully monitor the ammonium concentrations in each experimental step.

Abstract

We have investigated the nature of the photocurrent generated by Photosystem II (PSII), the water oxidizing enzyme, isolated from Thermosynechococcus elongatus, when immobilized on nanostructured titanium dioxide on an indium tin oxide electrode (TiO2/ITO). We investigated the properties of the photocurrent from PSII when immobilized as a monolayer versus multilayers, in the presence and absence of an inhibitor that binds to the site of the exchangeable quinone (QB) and in the presence and absence of exogenous mobile electron carriers (mediators). The findings indicate that electron transfer occurs from the first quinone (QA) directly to the electrode surface but that the electron transfer through the nanostructured metal oxide is the rate-limiting step. Redox mediators enhance the photocurrent by taking electrons from the nanostructured semiconductor surface to the ITO electrode surface not from PSII. This is demonstrated by photocurrent enhancement using a mediator incapable of accepting electrons from PSII. This model for electron transfer also explains anomalies reported in the literature using similar and related systems. The slow rate of the electron transfer step in the TiO2 is due to the energy level of electron injection into the semiconducting material being below the conduction band. This limits the usefulness of the present hybrid electrode.
