Abstract

Harmonic lasing provides an opportunity to extend the photon energy range of existing and planned X-ray FEL user facilities. Contrary to nonlinear harmonic generation, harmonic lasing can generate a much more intense, stable, and narrow-band FEL beam. Another interesting application is Harmonic Lasing Self-Seeding (HLSS) that allows to improve the longitudinal coherence and spectral power of a Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) FEL. This concept was tested at FLASH in the range of 4.5 - 15 nm and at PAL XFEL at 1 nm. In this paper we present recent results from the European XFEL where we successfully demonstrated harmonic lasing at 5.9 Angstrom and 2.8 Angstrom. In the latter case we obtained both 3rd and 5th harmonic lasing and, for the first time, operated a harmonic lasing cascade (5th-3rd-1st harmonics of the undulator). Abstract

We report the first measurement of the average of the electron-proton and positron-proton elastic scattering cross sections. This lepton charge-averaged cross section is insensitive to the leading effects of hard two-photon exchange, giving more robust access to the proton's electromagnetic form factors. The cross section was extracted from data taken by the OLYMPUS experiment at DESY, in which alternating stored electron and positron beams were scattered from a windowless gaseous hydrogen target. Elastic scattering events were identified from the coincident detection of the scattered lepton and recoil proton in a large-acceptance toroidal spectrometer. The luminosity was determined from the rates of M{\o}ller, Bhabha and elastic scattering in forward electromagnetic calorimeters. The data provide some selectivity between existing form factor global fits and will provide valuable constraints to future fits., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

Abstract

The OLYMPUS collaboration reports on a precision measurement of the positron-proton to electron-proton elastic cross section ratio, $R_{2\gamma}$, a direct measure of the contribution of hard two-photon exchange to the elastic cross section. In the OLYMPUS measurement, 2.01~GeV electron and positron beams were directed through a hydrogen gas target internal to the DORIS storage ring at DESY. A toroidal magnetic spectrometer instrumented with drift chambers and time-of-flight scintillators detected elastically scattered leptons in coincidence with recoiling protons over a scattering angle range of $\approx 20\degree$ to $80\degree$. The relative luminosity between the two beam species was monitored using tracking telescopes of interleaved GEM and MWPC detectors at $12\degree$, as well as symmetric M{\o}ller/Bhabha calorimeters at $1.29\degree$. A total integrated luminosity of 4.5~fb$^{-1}$ was collected. In the extraction of $R_{2\gamma}$, radiative effects were taken into account using a Monte Carlo generator to simulate the convolutions of internal bremsstrahlung with experiment-specific conditions such as detector acceptance and reconstruction efficiency. The resulting values of $R_{2\gamma}$, presented here for a wide range of virtual photon polarization $0.456<\epsilon<0.978$, are smaller than some hadronic two-photon exchange calculations predict, but are in reasonable agreement with a subtracted dispersion model and a phenomenological fit to the form factor data., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

The OLYMPUS experiment was designed to measure the ratio between the positron-proton and electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections, with the goal of determining the contribution of two-photon exchange to the elastic cross section. Two-photon exchange might resolve the discrepancy between measurements of the proton form factor ratio, $\mu_p G^p_E/G^p_M$, made using polarization techniques and those made in unpolarized experiments. OLYMPUS operated on the DORIS storage ring at DESY, alternating between 2.01~GeV electron and positron beams incident on an internal hydrogen gas target. The experiment used a toroidal magnetic spectrometer instrumented with drift chambers and time-of-flight detectors to measure rates for elastic scattering over the polar angular range of approximately $25^\circ$--$75^\circ$. Symmetric M{\o}ller/Bhabha calorimeters at $1.29^\circ$ and telescopes of GEM and MWPC detectors at $12^\circ$ served as luminosity monitors. A total luminosity of approximately 4.5~fb$^{-1}$ was collected over two running periods in 2012. Abstract

Physical review letters 126(16), 162501 (1-6) (2021). doi:10.1103/PhysRevLett.126.162501, We report the first measurement of the average of the electron-proton and positron-proton elastic scattering cross sections. This lepton charge-averaged cross section is insensitive to the leading effects of hard two-photon exchange, giving more robust access to the proton’s electromagnetic form factors. The cross section was extracted from data taken by the OLYMPUS experiment at DESY, in which alternating stored electron and positron beams were scattered from a windowless gaseous hydrogen target. Elastic scattering events were identified from the coincident detection of the scattered lepton and recoil proton in a large-acceptance toroidal spectrometer. The luminosity was determined from the rates of Møller, Bhabha, and elastic scattering in forward electromagnetic calorimeters. Abstract

Recently three RF guns were prepared at the Photo Injector Test Facility at DESY, location Zeuthen PITZ for their subsequent operation at FLASH and the European XFEL. The gun 3.1 is a previous cavity design and is currently installed and operated at FLASH, the other two guns 4.3 and 4.4 were of the current cavity design and are dedicated to serve for the start up of the European XFEL photo injector. All three cavities had been dry ice cleaned prior their conditioning and hence showed low dark current levels. The lowest dark current level as low as 60 amp; 956;A at 65MV m field amplitude has been observed for the gun 3.1. This paper reports in details about the conditioning process of the most recent gun 4.4. It informs about experience gained at PITZ during establishing of the RF conditioning procedure and provides a comparison with the other gun cavities in terms of the dark currents. It also summarizes the major setup upgrades, which have affected the conditioning processes of the cavities

20. Improvements of the orbit stability of DORIS III

Abstract

3 pp. (2004)., Running since 1974, the storage ring DORIS experienced a major modification in 1991 to run as a dedicated synchrotron radiation source. Since then the increasing requirements of the users on beam stability lead to a series of technical and operational measures to improve the beam conditions. The beam pipe has been mechanically isolated from the magnets, the cooling has been improved and this year a new orbit feedback came to operation which uses positron beam position monitors as well as photon monitors in the beam lines to stabilize the different photon beams. The different measures taken are presented.

Abstract

3 pp. (2004)., Since DORIS III became a dedicated source for synchrotron radiation in 1993, the demands of the synchrotron-light-users concerning the beam position stability have permanently increased. In order to improve this stability, different measures have been adopted, all with success. The vacuum chambers have been renewed, since they were the source of quadrupole movement, which caused strong horizontal orbit distortion. In 2003 a new orbit position control was implemented, based on the “Singular Value Decomposition” [1] method. The position information comes from synchrotron light monitors, installed in the beam-lines, and from the orbit measurement system, which operates with a maximal measurement rate of 5Hz and a spatial resolution not less than 20μm. To satisfy the requirements for beam-position stability, the orbit measurement system has been further developed. The test stage is nearly finished and the new system will be installed soon. The orbit measurement rate will exceed 250Hz und the spatial resolution will be less than 2μm. In addition beam oscillations of up to 20Hz can be damped.

The 7th European Particle Accelerator Conference EPAC 2000, EPAC 2000, Vienna, Austria, 26 Jun 2000 - 30 Jun 2000; Hamburg : DESY 610-612 (2000)., One of the standard investigations for coronary heart diseases is the invasive coronary angiography, where a catheter is introduced via the arterial system into the origin of the coronary artery of interest. By using high intensity X-ray beams just above and below the K-edge ofiodine, the contrast agent, and digital subtraction of the two pictures one can often avoid the use of a catheter and the risks of the conventional method. A 1.6 GeV electron storage ring is described, which is designed as a source for two coronary angiography beamlines.
