Abstract

The classical theory for the meta-analysis of $p$-values is based on the assumption that if the overall null hypothesis is true, then all $p$-values used in a chosen combined test statistic are genuine, i.e., are observations from independent and identically distributed standard uniform random variables. However, the pressure felt by most researchers to publish, which is worsen by publication bias, can originate fake $p$-values to be reported, usually Beta(1,2) distributed. In general, the existence of fake $p$-values in a sample of $p$-values to be combined is unknown, and if, for some reason, there is information that they do exist, their number will most likely be unknown as well. Moreover, even if fake $p$-values are accounted for, the cumulative distribution function of classical combined test statistics does not have a closed-form expression that facilitates its practical usage. To overcome this problem, tables with estimated critical values are supplied for the commonly used combined tests for the meta-analysis of $p$-values when a few of them are fake ones, i.e., Beta(1,2) distributed., Comment: 68 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of life history traits varies predictably across forest biomes, giving rise to a positive relationship between trait diversity and productivity. Our pan-latitudinal assessment provides new insights into the demographic mechanisms that govern the carbon turnover rate across forest biomes.

Abstract

Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Abstract

Bartonella spp. are opportunistic, vectorborne bacteria that can cause disease in both animals and humans. We investigated the molecular occurrence of Bartonella spp. in 634 phlebotomine sand fly specimens, belonging to 44 different sand fly species, sampled during 2017–2021 in north and northeastern Brazil. We detected Bartonella sp. DNA in 8.7% (55/634) of the specimens by using a quantitative real-time PCR targeting the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer intergenic region. Phylogenetic analysis positioned the Lutzomyia longipalpis sand fly–associated Bartonella gltA gene sequence in the same subclade as Bartonella ancashensis sequences and revealed a Bartonella sp. sequence in a Dampfomyia beltrani sand fly from Mexico. We amplified a bat-associated Bartonella nuoG sequence from a specimen of Nyssomyia antunesi sand fly. Our findings document the presence of Bartonella DNA in sand flies from Brazil, suggesting possible involvement of these insects in the epidemiologic cycle of Bartonella species.

Abstract

The classical tests for combining p-values use suitable statistics T(P1,…,Pn), which are based on the assumption that the observed p-values are genuine, i.e., under null hypotheses, are observations from independent and identically distributed Uniform(0,1) random variables P1,…,Pn. However, the phenomenon known as publication bias, which generally results from the publication of studies that reject null hypotheses of no effect or no difference, can tempt researchers to replicate their experiments, generally no more than once, with the aim of obtaining “better” p-values and reporting the smallest of the two observed p-values, to increase the chances of their work being published. However, when such “fake p-values” exist, they tamper with the statistic T(P1,…,Pn) because they are observations from a Beta(1,2) distribution. If present, the right model for the random variables Pk is described as a tilted Uniform distribution, also called a Mendel distribution, since it was underlying Fisher’s critique of Mendel’s work. Therefore, methods for combining genuine p-values are reviewed, and it is shown how quantiles of classical combining test statistics, allowing a small number of fake p-values, can be used to make an informed decision when jointly combining fake (from Two P) and genuine (from not Two P) p-values.

Abstract

Abstract Lignin, a major plant cell wall component, has an important role in plant-defense mechanisms against pathogens and is a promising renewable carbon source to produce bio-based chemicals. However, our understanding of microbial metabolism is incomplete regarding certain lignin-related compounds like p-coumaryl and sinapyl alcohols. Here, we reveal peripheral pathways for the catabolism of the three main lignin precursors (p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohols) in the plant pathogen Xanthomonas citri. Our study demonstrates all the necessary enzymatic steps for funneling these monolignols into the tricarboxylic acid cycle, concurrently uncovering aryl aldehyde reductases that likely protect the pathogen from aldehydes toxicity. It also shows that lignin-related aromatic compounds activate transcriptional responses related to chemotaxis and flagellar-dependent motility, which might play an important role during plant infection. Together our findings provide foundational knowledge to support biotechnological advances for both plant diseases treatments and conversion of lignin-derived compounds into bio-based chemicals.

A pesquisa foi realizada com uma abordagem qualitativa e bibliográfica de revisão de literatura de autores como Aires (2020), Barbosa (2023), Cunha (2021), Caetano (2021), Ferreira & Calixto (2021), Jesus (2021), Minayo (2020), Souza & Silva Neta (2023), entre outros. Considerando ainda, a coleta de dados de um questionário com 10 questões semiestruturadas, teve como público-alvo, 14 professores(as) da educação básica Licenciados(as) em Matemática, em um recorte temporal de atuação destes(s) profissionais docentes no período de dezembro de 2019 a 5 de março de 2023, foi possível compreender e elencar as implicações quanto ao desinteresse do estudante na disciplina de matemática.

Abstract

The present study aimed to elaborate and evaluate the nutritional, physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory qualities of mixed orange, sorrel, and taioba fruit juice. Four formulations were prepared: AT25 (50% orange, 25% sorrel, 25% taioba); AT15 (70% orange, 15% sorrel, 15% taioba); A50 (50% orange, 50% sorrel); and T30 (70% orange, 30% taioba). The juices were subjected to analyses of centesimal composition; physicochemical characterization; bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity; instrumental color analysis; microbiological quality; and sensory analysis. The low pH and high total titratable acidity of the juices may have contributed to the microbiological quality observed. The average of phenolic compounds was 63.28 mg FAE/100 mL. The A50 juice significantly differed from the other juices in terms of the sensory attributes analyzed, demonstrating better acceptance. It was concluded that taioba and sorrel have the potential for use in mixed juices because they provide adequate physicochemical, microbiological, and nutritional characteristics.

Abstract

Bananas are one of the most widely consumed fruits in Brazil and across the world. However, the intensive use of pesticides in these and other crops can negatively impact human and animal health due to the possibility of pesticide residues persisting in derived products, even after industrial processing. Therefore, this study evaluated the effect of thermal processing on the degradation of the pesticides azoxystrobin, bifenthrin, difenoconazole, and simazine in samples of caramelized banana jam added of banana peel flour (4% w/w) in partial replacement of the fruit pulp. QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) method and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) wa used to analyze the above compounds. The method was validated following the standard procedures of the European Commission and ANVISA. Samples of banana pulp were spiked with the pesticides at different concentrations (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 mg.Kg-1) in order to observe their degradation following thermal processing. Degradation percentages ranged between 28 and 60 %, and these were potentially influenced by the physicochemical properties of each compound, as well as the characteristics of the food matrix. The thermal processing provided partial degradations of pesticide residues, some at levels below the MRLs (Maximum Residual Levels) established for bananas. Currently, there is no specific legislation in Brazil and in many other countries for controlling pesticides in processed foods, such as fruit jams. Therefore, this research highlights the need for the creation of new food laws by government agencies to this end to ensure the provision of safe food to the wide population.

Abstract

Objective: to map the health needs of people with diabetes mellitus for disease management. Methods: scoping review according to the JBI guided instead by the guiding question: what are the health needs of people with diabetes for managing their health condition? Health databases and portals were analyzed using the descriptors Diabetes mellitus, Health service needs and demands, Needs assessment, Disease management, and the keyword Health needs. Results: the analysis consisted of 26 studies, the majority published in 2019, carried out in Europe, with people with type 2 diabetes and in a hospital setting. Health needs were listed in four thematic categories. Conclusion: people with diabetes mellitus have educational, behavioral, supportive, and emotional health needs, and these needs are interconnected, impacting disease management and quality of life. Contributions to practice: with our findings, it is possible to guide research in the area, guiding researchers to design educational interventions that can meet the needs presented. In addition, it will also guide professionals in their clinical practice to reflect on the care they provide, helping them to make decisions to direct the planning and execution of care.

The organic food market has been expanding across the globe as well as in Brazil. Therefore, since we considered the collection of information about the organic food market to be relevant, we decided to characterize the organic food market in the metropolitan region of Vitória, Espírito Santo. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to analyze the profile and perceptions of organic producers/traders regarding the production of organic foods, investigate the profile and perceptions of organic food consumers, and identify the factors that influence their consumption. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and exploratory survey was conducted in 2019 with 50 producers/traders and 281 organic food consumers utilizing semistructured questionnaires. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed using percentage values, media, and evaluation of proportion differences. Fisher's exact test was used to analyze differences in proportions. The producers/traders were 76.0 % male, 82.0 % white, 70.0 % married, and 60.0 % attended elementary school. The commercial production of organic foods is mainly motivated by health and financial issues. A lack of labor (52.0 %) and an absence of government/credit support (40.0 %) were the greatest obstacles related to organic food production. The consumers were mostly female (75.1 %), white people (53.4 %), married people (44.5 %), and people with at least one degree (76.5 %). While the consumption of mainly organic fruits and vegetables was motivated by aspects related to health, factors such as poor access to sales points (27.8 %) and price (26.7 %) also limited the increase in consumption. Both consumers and producers/traders related to the consumption and production of organic food with health concerns revealed the important role of these foods in promoting the population's quality of life. However, for this growing market, there is a need for an integration between political authorities, producers, and consumers.

Abstract

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), melanoma is a type of cancer that affects people globally in different parts of the human body, leading to deaths of thousands of people every year worldwide. Intelligent diagnostic tools through automatic detection in medical images are extremely effective in aiding medical diagnosis. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems are of utmost importance for image-based pre-diagnosis, and the use of artificial intelligence–based tools for monitoring, detection, and segmentation of the pathological region are increasingly used in integrated smart solutions within smart city systems through cloud data processing with the use of edge computing. This study proposes a new approach capable of integrating into computational monitoring and medical diagnostic assistance systems called Health of Things Melanoma Detection System (HTMDS). The method presents a deep learning–based approach using the YOLOv8 network for melanoma detection in dermatoscopic images. The study proposes a workflow through communication between the mobile device, which extracts captured images from the dermatoscopic device and uploads them to the cloud API, and a new approach using deep learning and different fine-tuning models for melanoma detection and segmentation of the region of interest, along with the cloud communication structure and comparison with methods found in the state of the art, addressing local processing. The new approach achieved satisfactory results with over 98% accuracy for detection and over 99% accuracy for skin cancer segmentation, surpassing various state-of-the-art works in different methods, such as manual, semi-automatic, and automatic approaches. The new approach demonstrates effective results in the performance of different intelligent automatic models with real-time processing, which can be used in affiliated institutions or offices in smart cities for population use and medical diagnosis purposes.

Abstract

The increasing focus on promoting sustainable transportation in higher education institutions has resulted in studies that examine different aspects of the planning process. However, little research has focused on an essential element of the process: indicators of sustainable mobility in the context of university campuses. This gap is particularly noticeable in countries like Brazil, where this investigation was carried out. This study aimed to identify a set of key indicators to evaluate sustainable mobility on university campuses by taking into account their relevance and suitability to different contexts. The study combined knowledge gained from real-life planning initiatives with experts' judgment to identify the key indicators. After selecting potentially transferable indicators, we formed an expert panel with professionals from various university campuses to determine the degree of relevance and suitability of these indicators in different contexts. The results were analyzed using the Friedman non-parametric test, which indicated experts' agreement, in terms of relevance and suitability, in the following 13 indicators: Public transport infrastructure, Quality of pedestrian paths (inside and to access the campus), Parking spaces for users with mobility constraints, Urban public transport, Security within and around the campus, Universal access to buildings, Parking infrastructure, Bike racks and bike shelters, Infrastructure to access the campus, Adequacy of transport modes, Quality of campus roads, Cycling infrastructure, and Road safety campaigns. The final list may be particularly convenient for preliminary assessments or for universities that do not have resources available for wide-ranging evaluations of sustainable mobility.

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate if there are differences in mitigation acute pain following oral surgery procedures within a hospital setting and regarding various medication regimens. Materials and methods: A systematic literature search was performed between the years 2013 and 2023, including the databases PUBMED, Cochrane and Scopus, to identify the clinical trials investigating the prescription of non-steroidal (NSAID’s) anti-inflammatory drugs before or after an oral surgery. A meta-analysis with meta-regression model was employed on the primary and secondary outcomes, such as pain, swelling and trismus. Results: Thirty-six articles were included, 6 of them being retrospective and 30 prospective, with a higher proportion of women than men, at a ratio of 1.34:1 and an average age of 31.9 years. Drugs with medium duration of action demonstrated lower values for pain and swelling. Regarding these parameters, pain and swelling, propionic acid derivatives and acetic acid derivatives exhibited lower values respectively. Conclusions: The quality of evidence was low to very low-certainty. The meta-analysis suggests that postoperative pain, swelling and trismus following oral surgery management may be effectively treated with the following drugs: NSAID medium-duration action drugs; propionic acid derivatives for lower pain levels and acetic acid derivatives for lower swelling measures; and Ibuprofen 400mg every 8h for 3 days or less. Clinical Relevance: Anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs are prescribed to prevent or treat dental pain. Ibuprofen 400mg was the most prescribed drug after or before an oral surgery procedure. However, the evidence is indirect and needs to be interpreted with caution.

Abstract Familial cardiomyopathy in pediatric stages is a poorly understood presentation of heart disease in children that is attributed to pathogenic mutations. Through exome sequencing, we report a homozygous variant in tropomodulin 1 (TMOD1; c.565C>T, p.R189W) in three individuals from two unrelated families with childhood-onset dilated and restrictive cardiomyopathy. To decipher the mechanism of pathogenicity of the R189W mutation in TMOD1, we utilized a wide array of methods, including protein analyses, biochemistry and cultured cardiomyocytes. Structural modeling revealed potential defects in the local folding of TMOD1R189W and its affinity for actin. Cardiomyocytes expressing GFP-TMOD1R189W demonstrated longer thin filaments than GFP-TMOD1wt-expressing cells, resulting in compromised filament length regulation. Furthermore, TMOD1R189W showed weakened activity in capping actin filament pointed ends, providing direct evidence for the variant’s effect on actin filament length regulation. Our data indicate that the p.R189W variant in TMOD1 has altered biochemical properties and reveals a unique mechanism for childhood-onset cardiomyopathy.

Abstract

Modeling the vulnerabilities lifecycle and exploitation frequency are at the core of security of networks evaluation. Pareto, Weibull, and log-normal models have been widely used to model the exploit and patch availability dates, the time to compromise a system, the time between compromises, and the exploitation volumes. Random samples (systematic and simple random sampling) of the time from publication to update of cybervulnerabilities disclosed in 2021 and in 2022 are analyzed to evaluate the goodness-of-fit of the traditional Pareto and log-normal laws. As censoring and thinning almost surely occur, other heavy-tailed distributions in the domain of attraction of extreme value or geo-extreme value laws are investigated as suitable alternatives. Goodness-of-fit tests, the Akaike information criterion (AIC), and the Vuong test, support the statistical choice of log-logistic, a geo-max stable law in the domain of attraction of the Fréchet model of maxima, with hyperexponential and general extreme value fittings as runners-up. Evidence that the data come from a mixture of differently stretched populations affects vulnerabilities scoring systems, specifically the common vulnerabilities scoring system (CVSS).

Inferences on the location parameter λ in location-scale families can be carried out using Studentized statistics, i.e., considering estimators λ˜ of λ and δ˜ of the nuisance scale parameter δ, in a statistic T=g(λ˜,δ˜) with a sampling distribution that does not depend on (λ,δ). If both estimators are independent, then T is an externally Studentized statistic; otherwise, it is an internally Studentized statistic. For the Gaussian and for the exponential location-scale families, there are externally Studentized statistics with sampling distributions that are easy to obtain: in the Gaussian case, Student’s classic t statistic, since the sample mean λ˜=X¯ and the sample standard deviation δ˜=S are independent; in the exponential case, the sample minimum λ˜=X1:n and the sample range δ˜=Xn:n−X1:n, where the latter is a dispersion estimator, which are independent due to the independence of spacings. Abstract

(1) Background: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an extruded whole-grain sorghum beverage containing L. paracasei on body composition, lipid profiles, and intestinal health in overweight and obese adults. (2) Methods: A chronic, single-blind randomized controlled pilot study was conducted with 30 volunteers allocated to three groups (n = 10/group): extruded sorghum beverage (ESB), extruded sorghum beverage with L. paracasei (ESPB), and control beverage (CB) (waxy maize starch). The chemical composition of the beverages was analyzed. Volunteers consumed the beverages for ten weeks at breakfast, along with individual dietary prescriptions. Body composition, biochemical markers, gastrointestinal symptoms, stool consistency, intestinal permeability, short-chain fatty acids, fecal pH, and stool L. paracasei DNA concentration were analyzed at the beginning and end of the intervention period. (3) Results: The ESB showed better composition than the CB, particularly in terms of resistant starch content, total phenolic compounds, condensed tannins, and antioxidant capacity. Both the ESB and the ESPB had an effect on body composition (estimated total visceral fat and waist volume), biochemical markers (Castelli index I), and intestinal health (Bristol scale, diarrhea score, valeric acid, and L. paracasei DNA concentration). No changes were observed in the CB group after the intervention. (4) Conclusions: Whole-grain sorghum beverages demonstrated good nutritional value, and consumption of these beverages, with or without L. paracasei, provided health benefits, including improvements in body composition, Castelli index I scores, and intestinal health, in overweight and obese adults.

Abstract

Resumo Os processos administrativos de reconhecimento de terras indígenas (TIs) no Brasil podem levar décadas para chegar a termo. Povos indígenas que habitam em TIs não reconhecidas em caráter final são mais vulneráveis a uma série de violações de direitos, o que torna premente sua conclusão. O presente artigo pretende oferecer uma resposta à seguinte pergunta: por que alguns processos demarcatórios demoram mais que outros? Primeiramente, arrolamos cinco condições constantes da literatura sobre demarcação de terras indígenas que podem postergá-las. Na sequência, aplicamos o método qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), em sua modalidade crisp set, a um conjunto de quarenta casos de demarcações de TIs. Apresentamos duas conclusões: que a presença de interesses econômicos é uma condição importante para explicar o longo tempo de alguns processos demarcatórios, mas não é necessária nem suficiente, e que a conjunção desse fator com a judicialização do processo demarcatório explica a maioria dos casos de demarcações de longa duração.

Resumo Este estudo, de caráter misto e sequencial exploratório, objetivou identificar padrões relacionados a trajetória de mulheres gestantes e puérperas que evoluíram para situações de risco, desde sua chegada em um primeiro serviço de assistência até sua admissão em uma maternidade terciária. A fase quantitativa analisou 1.703 prontuários e registros de internação de mulheres assistidas em três maternidades terciárias da Região Metropolitana de Fortaleza, no Ceará, entre 2010 e 2019. Na fase qualitativa, realizada entre janeiro e setembro de 2020, participaram 14 mulheres sobreviventes ao Near Miss Materno (NMM), por meio da Entrevista Narrativa Autobiográfica de Schütze. Os achados desvelam como atrasos relacionados aos profissionais e ao sistema de saúde contribuíram para a peregrinação de gestantes e puérperas e, consequentemente, para os quadros de NMM. A peregrinação destas mulheres associa-se a problemas nas estruturas da rede de atenção e dos serviços de saúde. Assim, fazem-se necessários o uso de ferramentas de acompanhamento da qualidade do serviço prestado pelos profissionais de saúde, os processos assistenciais bem estabelecidos, as estruturas físicas e as Redes de Atenção à Saúde (RAS), que suportem o seguimento desses processos.

Abstract

Abstract Using 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness. Using only location, stratified by forest type, as predictor, our spatial model, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most accurate map of tree diversity in Amazonia to date, explaining approximately 70% of the tree diversity and species-richness. Large soil-forest combinations determine a significant percentage of the variation in tree species-richness and tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian forest-plots. We suggest that the size and fragmentation of these systems drive their large-scale diversity patterns and hence local diversity. A model not using location but cumulative water deficit, tree density, and temperature seasonality explains 47% of the tree species-richness in the terra-firme forest in Amazonia. Over large areas across Amazonia, residuals of this relationship are small and poorly spatially structured, suggesting that much of the residual variation may be local. The Guyana Shield area has consistently negative residuals, showing that this area has lower tree species-richness than expected by our models. We provide extensive plot meta-data, including tree density, tree alpha-diversity and tree species-richness results and gridded maps at 0.1-degree resolution.

37. Dermatophytosis in Companion Animals in Portugal: A Comprehensive Epidemiological Retrospective Study of 12 Years (2012–2023)

Abstract

Dermatophytosis, commonly referred to as ringworm, is a common superficial fungal infection in companion animals and humans. Between 2012 and 2023, plucked hair and scraped scale samples from domestic dogs and cats with clinical suspicion of dermatophytosis were collected from 355 veterinary medical centres across mainland Portugal. A total of 4716 animal samples were inoculated onto DERM agar, incubated at 25 °C for up to 4 weeks, and periodically examined macro- and micro-scopically to observe and evaluate fungal growth. Of these, 271 samples were removed due to contaminant fungi. Of the 568 positive cultures, the highest number were from the North (48.1%; 95% CI: 44.0–52.2%) and Centre (32.4%; 95% CI: 28.7–36.4%) regions. Microsporum canis was the most frequently isolated species (63.9%), followed by Trichophyton spp. (20.3%) and Nannizia gypsea (formerly Microsporum gypseum) (8.1%). Felines exhibited a higher frequency (17.4%) compared with dogs (9.1%) (p < 0.001). In dogs, the Yorkshire Terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Miniature Pinscher, Dalmatian and Miniature Schnauzer demonstrated a significant predisposition to dermatophytosis (p < 0.05). In cats, the Persian and Scottish Fold breeds were significantly predisposed (p < 0.05). No significant differences were found between sexes (p > 0.05). These findings underscore dermatophytosis as an increasing public health concern due to its zoonotic and contagious nature, providing comprehensive insights into the epidemiology of dermatophytosis in Portugal.

Abstract

Leishmaniosis is a vector-borne disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania, which are zoonotic and have an important impact on animal and public health globally. Between 2009 and 2023, blood samples from domestic dogs with clinical suspicion of leishmaniosis were received from 286 veterinary medical centres throughout mainland Portugal. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was utilised to detect antibodies against Leishmania infantum antigens. Additionally, a complete blood count and tests for total proteins, urea, creatinine and alanine aminotransferase, as well as protein electrophoresis, were also performed. No significant relationship between sex and breed was observed. The age distribution was bimodal, with the highest prevalence of disease occurring at 2–5 years of age and a secondary peak occurring at 6 years or over (p < 0.001). No statistical correlation was observed between creatinine and urea across the ELISA serological groups. In contrast, both the gamma globulin levels (r = 0.45; p < 0.001) and the albumin/globulin ratio (r = −0.36; p < 0.001) exhibited moderate correlations with the ELISA. These findings support recent seroprevalence studies in dogs, with some geographical areas in Northern Portugal exhibiting the highest values, which may be the result of geographical shifts in parasite circulation due to climate change.

Abstract

Yerba mate is a forest species of both cultural and economic importance growing in the subtropical regions of South America, especially in the south of Brazil. Despite its importance, yerba mate has never received enough attention from researchers, so the nutritional sufficiency ranges and critical levels have not yet been determined. This research aimed to establish these parameters for yerba mate to enable its foliar diagnosis. A total of 167 leaf samples were collected from production fields located in the five yerba mate-growing regions in Rio Grande do Sul, and the leaf nutrients were determined by standard chemical methods. The yield of each production field was accessed, and the cutoff value separating low- and high-yield groups was calculated in 16.75 Mg ha−1. The multivariate compositional nutrient diagnosis (CND) standards were determined, and nutrient interactions were estimated by correlation and principal component analyses. There was no positive correlation between any single nutrient and yield, even in the high-yield population, evidencing that a higher yield is the outcome of the balance among all nutrients. Excess of B occurred in one-third of the low-yield samples, while deficiency of Cu and K occurred in one-fourth of these samples. Finally, we established the adequate leaf nutrient levels for yerba mate.

Abstract

While the Gleason score is the most important prognostic marker for prostate cancer patients, it suffers from significant observer variability. Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, based on deep learning, have proven to achieve pathologist-level performance at Gleason grading. However, the performance of such systems can degrade in the presence of artifacts, foreign tissue, or other anomalies. Pathologists integrating their expertise with feedback from an AI system could result in a synergy that outperforms both the individual pathologist and the system. Despite the hype around AI assistance, existing literature on this topic within the pathology domain is limited. We investigated the value of AI assistance for grading prostate biopsies. A panel of fourteen observers graded 160 biopsies with and without AI assistance. Using AI, the agreement of the panel with an expert reference standard significantly increased (quadratically weighted Cohen's kappa, 0.799 vs 0.872; p=0.018). Abstract

Over the last decades the tourism sector has played an increasingly important role in the socio-economic development of Portugal. We analyze data from the last fifty years from Portugal, comparing non-pandemic forecasts derived with ARIMA time series models for the triennium 2020–2022, that is, forecasts obtained under the assumption that the COVID-19 pandemic would not have happened, to actual pandemic values as means to assess the impact of the pandemic on the annual numbers of guests and overnight stays in that period. The results show that full recovery has been reached in Portugal for the number of overnight stays in 2022, and individually in each main region of the country (mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores). However, the same cannot be said of the recovery of the number of guests, except for Madeira in 2022, whose recorded value exceeded the corresponding non-pandemic forecast value.

A panel of 14 observers graded 160 biopsies with and without AI assistance. Using AI, the agreement of the panel with an expert reference standard increased significantly (quadratically weighted Cohens kappa, 0.799 vs. 0.872; p = 0.019). On an external validation set of 87 cases, the panel showed a significant increase in agreement with a panel of international experts in prostate pathology (quadratically weighted Cohens kappa, 0.733 vs. 0.786; p = 0.003). In both experiments, on a group-level, AI-assisted pathologists outperformed the unassisted pathologists and the standalone AI system. Our results show the potential of AI systems for Gleason grading, but more importantly, show the benefits of pathologist-AI synergy.

Abstract

A Inteligência Artificial (IA) é definida como um amplo ramo da ciência da computação que lida com a construção de máquinas “inteligentes”, capazes de realizar tarefas que normalmente requerem inteligência humana e carrega um enorme potencial para novos serviços e produtos. O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar os principais desafios para a inovação tecnológica apresentados pela utilização da Inteligência Artificial. Foi realizada uma revisão conhecida como Scoping Review, usando critérios do Cochrane Systematic Reviews associados ao PRISMA, na base Scopus e foram identificados 1.391 registros, usando os descritores artificial intelligence, innovation e challenges. Por meio dos métodos de seleção e classificação foram analisados 40 artigos, que sinalizam que as principais áreas da ciência que estão utilizando a Inteligência Artificial como inovação tecnológica são ciência da computação, engenharias e ciências sociais. Os principais desafios encontrados foram; permitir com IA ofertas de inovações autônomas, integrar a tecnologia de IA nas organizações para processos e resultados de inovação digital, falta de especialistas na área de IA e a necessidade de reformulação das leis e regulamentos referentes a IA.

Abstract

The Curral Novo Iron District, located in the center-east of the state of Piauí, is hosted in the Granjeiro Complex in its southwestern section, located in the Rio Piranhas-Seridó Domain, northern subprovince of Borborema Province. In this district, the banded iron rocks have an average content of approximately 27% Fe, with an estimated potential of more than one million tons of ore. Through the integration of petrographic, isotopic, geochemical and geochronological field data, a comprehensive characterization of the lithotypes present in the complex (orthogneisses, migmatites and a metavolcano-sedimentary unit) and associated units (syenogranitic orthogneisses and pegmatite granites) was carried out, focusing on the evolutionary discussion of this Archean complex, as well as the origin of metasomatism present in the iron district. Tonalitic and granodioritic orthogneisses include calcic to alkali-calcic rocks with low mafic mineral content. These rocks have low concentrations of lithophile elements and high field potential elements, significant fractionation of light rare earth elements and slightly negative Eu anomalies. U-Pb geochronology in tonalitic orthogneiss zircon from the Granjeiro Complex indicates the age of the protolith in the Paleoarchean at 3349 Ma. The metavolcano-sedimentary unit is made up of amphibolites, magnesian schists, serpentinites and banded iron rocks. Such rocks derived from mafic and ultramafic protoliths have a komatiitic and basaltic composition and have a genesis associated with the subduction phase of oceanic plates, presenting a geochemical affinity similar to that of modern island arc rocks. The iron rocks present sedimentary facies of the oxide and silicate types, with strong impoverishment of high field potential elements and rare earth elements and negative Ce anomalies. These units are intruded by syenogranitic plutons, collisional powders, type A2, aged 2651 Ma. Chemically, these granites are metaluminous to peraluminous, alkali-calcic and ferrous types, having a slight enrichment of light rare earth elements in relation to heavy rare earth elements and high contents of lithophile elements and high field potential elements. The rocks of the Granjeiro Complex show records of strong crustal reworking in the Paleoproterozoic, starting from the Riacian, with a metamorphic peak in metavolcanosedimentary rocks indicated by U-Pb dating in amphibolite zircon at 2200 Ma. An important magmatic event related to the global process of extension of continental masses during the Staterian, aged 1759 Ma, represented by several intrusive plutons in all units of the area, promoted hydrothermal alteration in the surrounding amphibolites and iron rocks, causing silicification, albitization, potassification, carbonatization, sulfidation and reconcentration of iron. δ 34S values = -3.11 to 2.3 per mil in hydrothermal sulfides suggest magmatic sources for the sulfur associated with the hydrothermal system. The incorporation of the analysis of these diverse geological data, the focus of this study, made it possible to obtain a detailed understanding of the geological evolution of the Granjeiro Complex in the area, as well as the origin of metasomatism in the iron district.

Abstract

Introdução/Objetivo: Analisar o impacto da vacina adsorvida difteria, tétano e coqueluche (pertússis acelular) nos casos confirmados de coqueluche no Brasil. Métodos: Estudo ecológico de série temporal realizado por meio de dados extraídos do Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS) provenientes do Sistema de Sistema de Informação do Programa Nacional de Imunizações (SI-PNI/CGPNI/DEIDT/SVS/MS) nas regiões brasileiras entre 2012 a 2022. Os participantes foram brasileiros de ambos os sexos de 0 a 80 anos. As variáveis analisadas foram: faixa etária, coberturas vacinais por ano segundo região, casos confirmados de coqueluche. As variáveis foram analisadas por meio da estatística descritiva. Resultados: Foram registrados um total de 31.149 casos confirmados de coqueluche. Houve variações no número de casos ao longo dos anos, com um pico de 8.498 casos em 2015. A Região Sudeste apresentou o maior número de casos, totalizando 12.806, seguida pela Região Nordeste (8.004) e Região Sul (6.353). A faixa etária mais afetada foi a de crianças menores de 1 ano, com 18.263 casos, seguida pela faixa etária de 1 a 4 anos, com 5.181 casos. Ao analisar as coberturas vacinais por região, observamos variações ao longo dos anos. Os anos com maior cobertura vacinal foram em 2013 (94,53%) e 2014 (90,93%), sendo que nesses anos também ocorreram altos números de casos de coqueluche. Conclusão: A coqueluche continua sendo um desafio de saúde pública no Brasil, com variações no número de casos ao longo dos anos. Embora os anos com maior cobertura vacinal não tenham necessariamente correspondido aos anos com a maioria dos casos, a vacinação é fundamental para reduzir a incidência da doença. As faixas etárias mais afetadas corroboram com a literatura: crianças menores de 1 ano e crianças de 1 a 4 anos. É necessário fortalecer a vigilância epidemiológica e a qualidade dos dados notificados, visando a um melhor monitoramento e controle da coqueluche no país.
