Degraded floodplains and valley floors are restored with the goal of enhancing habitat for native fish and aquatic-riparian biota and the protection or improvement of water quality. Recent years have seen a shift toward “process-based restoration” that is intended to reestablish compromised ecogeomorphic processes resulting from site- or watershed-scale degradation. One form of process-based restoration has developed in the Pacific Northwest, United States, that is intended to reconnect rivers to their floodplains by slowing down flows of sediment, water, and nutrients to encourage lateral and vertical connectivity at base flows, facilitating development of dynamic, self-forming, and self-sustaining river-wetland corridors. Synergies between applied practices and the theoretical work of Cluer and Thorne in 2014 have led this form of restoration to be referred to regionally as restoration to a Stage 0 condition. This approach to rehabilitation is valley scale, rendering traditional monitoring strategies that target single-thread channels inadequate to capture pre- and post-project site conditions, thus motivating the development of novel monitoring approaches. We present a specific definition of this new type of rehabilitation that was developed in collaborative workshops with practitioners of the approach. Further, we present an initial synthesis of results from monitoring activities that provide a foundation for understanding the effects of this approach of river rehabilitation on substrate composition, depth to groundwater, water temperature, macroinvertebrate richness and abundance, secondary macroinvertebrate production, vegetation conditions, wood loading and configuration, water inundation, flow velocity, modeled juvenile salmonid habitat, and aquatic biodiversity.

Abstract Objective To explore how patients and relatives experience and talk together about their life with inflammatory arthritis. Design Qualitative research. Setting A convenience sample was used. Participants were recruited in seven rheumatology departments in France. Participants Patients with rheumatoid arthritis or spondyloarthritis, agreeing to participate in the study with a relative, age at least 18 years. Data collection and analysis Two psychologists conducted face‐to‐face interviews with 20 patient‐relative dyads (40 individuals). A thematic analysis followed a general inductive approach. Results Saturation was reached after interviews with 20 dyads. The analysis revealed four main themes: (a) disease ‘lived’ together: a new role for the relative (providing help in physical tasks, emotional support, acting as a driving force, having a role in medical care) and communication around the disease (not focusing on the disease); (b) impact of the disease on the relationship; (c) social impact of the disease on the dyad (social isolation); (d) difficulties and needs of the relative (need to better know the disease). Conclusion This study has highlighted the importance of recognizing the role of the relative in the management of inflammatory arthritis disease, especially when medical decisions are shared with professionals. A joint approach to treatment is a basis for coping with the disease. This approach supposes (a) discussions about relatives’ new roles to clarify them, (b) patients’ and relatives’ communication skills and (c) a good understanding of each other, which can be improved by providing information on the disease and coping strategies for both the patient and the relative.

In the second issue of Samuel Morton’s “Synopsis of the Organic Remains of the Cretaceous Group of the United States” published in June 1835, several otodontid shark teeth from Cenozoic formations of New Jersey are named with authorship of Louis Agassiz and meet the conditions of availability of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclatural. It has gone largely unnoticed that some of these names were introduced in this work before their publication in Agassiz’s masterpiece “Recherches sur les poissons fossiles”. The specimens presented by Morton were kept in the John Price Wetherill (1794-1853) collection that found its way into the paleontological collection of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University, Philadelphia, where most of them have been rediscovered. These teeth are part of the type series upon which Agassiz introduced Lamna obliqua Agassiz in Morton, 1835, Lamna lanceolata Agassiz in Morton, 1835, Carcharias lanceolatus Agassiz in Morton, 1835, Carcharias megalotis Agassiz, 1835 and Carcharias polygurus Agassiz in Morton, 1835, all of these species being referred to the genus Otodus in the present work. In order to secure the nomenclatural stability of the Otodontidae, it is established that Otodus lanceolatus is a junior synonym of Otodus obliquus, that “Carcharias” lanceolatus belongs to the genus Otodus Agassiz, 1838 and is invalid as a junior secondary homonym of Otodus lanceolatus, that Otodus megalotis is a junior synonym of Otodus auriculatus (Blainville, 1818), and that Otodus polygurus (Otodus polygyrus being an incorrect subsequent spelling) is a junior synonym of Otodus megalodon (Agassiz, 1835). Furthermore, it is shown that the date of publication of Otodus obliquus (Agassiz in Morton, 1835) is 1835 and not 1838 as previously thought.

Cet article souligne le rôle Jean-Baptiste Beurard dans l’histoire de la paléoichtyologie. Ancien chanoine de la cathédrale de Toul, il trouva après les affres des débuts de la Révolution un emploi d’agent du gouvernement attaché à l’administration des mines entre 1794 et 1815. Chargé de la surveillance des mines de mercure dans les nouveaux départements annexés par la France sur la rive gauche du Rhin, il redécouvrit en juillet 1799 le fameux gisement d’« ichtyolites » (poissons fossiles) imprégnés de cinabre de Münsterappel daté du Permien inférieur. Il envoya plusieurs spécimens dans des collections institutionnelles parisiennes. Des représentants de l’espèce Paramblypterus duvernoy (Agassiz, 1833) (Actinopterygii, Amblypteridae), probablement envoyés par Beurard avant 1809 d’après le témoignage de Barthélémy Faujas de Saint-Fond, ont été identifiés dans les collections du Muséum national d’Histoire Naturelle, Paris. Un autre spécimen ayant appartenu de manière incontestable à Beurard est conservé dans les collections Géosciences de Sorbonne Université et revêt un intérêt historique tout particulier. Beurard possédait également dans sa collection deux échantillons de poissons fossiles du Cénomanien de Haqel dans l’actuel Liban, qu’il avait reçu de son neveu Claude Charles Harmand (1784–1847), officier de marine, en 1817. À partir d’eux, Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville décrivit deux espèces qu’il nomma Clupea beurardi Blainville, 1818a et Clupea brevissima Blainville, 1818a. La première n’est plus considérée comme valide et la seconde est aujourd’hui assignée au genre Armigatus Grande, 1982 (Actinopterygii, Clupeomorpha) dont elle est l’espèce type. Un de ces spécimens est conservé au Natural History Museum, Londres, et provient de la collection de William Willoughby Cole (1807–1886), comte d’Enniskillen, qui avait acquis une partie de la collection Beurard. Étiqueté par erreur Clupea beurardi par Beurard, cet échantillon porte en réalité les quatre syntypes d’Armigatus brevissimus. Un lectotype est désigné ici pour fixer le statut de cette espèce, certainement la plus abondante et la plus iconique du gisement de Haqel.

En 1808 puis en 1824, Georges Cuvier signala dans la région du Mans la présence de restes de crocodiles fossiles à partir desquels fut créée l’espèce Crocodilus maunyi GRAY, 1831. Il avait été informé de ces découvertes par le naturaliste manceau Louis Jean Charles Maulny (1758-1815) et par Jean Antoine Daudin (1749-1832), premier conservateur du Muséum d’histoire naturelle du Mans. Faute de figures publiées, ce matériel est resté énigmatique durant deux siècles. Des aquarelles inédites conservées dans les archives de Georges Cuvier permettent de dévoiler les spécimens qu’il avait décrits sous le nom de « crocodiles fossiles des environs du Mans ». Ils comprennent des dents, des vertèbres et des portions de mâchoires de crocodylomorphes marins et de plésiosauriens découvertes dans le Mésozoïque de la Sarthe (Bathonien, Callovien, Cénomanien ?). Un de ces dessins présente une dent de pliosaure du Bathonien de Ber- nay-en-Champagne qui serait la plus ancienne découverte d’un représentant de ce groupe. Deux autres aquarelles montrent une portion de mandibule d’un crocodylomorphe marin (Thalattosuchia, Metriorhynchidae indéterminé) et une vertèbre de plésiosaurien (Plesiosauria indéterminé) du Callovien moyen de Chaufour-Notre-Dame, toujours conservées au Musée Vert, le muséum d’histoire naturelle du Mans. Ces deux spécimens furent découverts en 1816 par un amateur local, le docteur Eusèbe Marie Tendron (1778-1854). Crocodilus maunyi GRAY, 1831 reste néanmoins considéré comme un nomen dubium au regard du manque de caractères diagnostiques de l’ensemble de ses syntypes.

Rarely are sufficient resources available to support the full suite of management actions to promote recovery of a species across its entire distribution. Decision support models are a tool that can inform natural resource management decisions with consideration of the perspectives from a variety of stakeholders who work across large geographic and jurisdictional extents. We offer an example of a decision support model that was developed by several federal and state natural resource agencies to rank Bull Trout Salvelinus confluentus core areas for prioritizing conservation investment within Oregon, USA. We engaged state‐level decision makers to identify parameters that were believed to be influential in determining funding allocations for Bull Trout core areas. Parameters were linked in a model framework that was further refined with input from local Bull Trout experts with knowledge specific to the various core areas. The model produces a relative priority value that is a combination of the conservation risk to the species and the management capacity to address threats. A series of sensitivity analyses suggested that Bull Trout persistence and threat score were most influential in determining the relative priority of a core area, whereas life history and genetic diversity were least influential. One of the more powerful products from this work is an interactive Web‐based application (https://das.ecosphere.fws.gov/public/obts/) that anyone can use to explore how their beliefs in parameter values will affect the relative priority of Bull Trout core areas across Oregon. Our modeling effort is an example of engaging stakeholders with different roles in species recovery and across a large geographic area to create a clearer path forward in allocating limited resources for species recovery. Cet article passe en revue les premières découvertes de dinosaures faites en France avant que le terme Dinosauria n’ait été introduit par Richard Owen en 1842. En mettant à part les premières découvertes du théropode Streptospondylus altdorfensis faites au XVIIIe siècle par Charles Bacheley dans le Jurassique des Vaches Noires, les principaux résultats démontrés ici sont les suivants (par ordre chronologique) : 1) les premiers restes de dinosaures (dents de théropodes) du Calcaire de Caen (Bathonien) furent collectés par Arcisse de Caumont dans les carrières de Quilly en, ou avant, avril 1826 et la première mention de cette découverte fut publiée en 1827 ; 2) les restes de théropode que William Buckland avait observés en octobre 1826 dans le Cabinet d’Histoire naturelle de Besançon furent signalés dans une publication dès 1830 ; 3) la première mention à un dinosaure du Jurassique supérieur du Boulonnais fut longtemps considérée avoir été celle faite par Constant Prévost en 1839. Des dents d’un théropode et d’un dinosaure herbivore furent, semble-t-il, découvertes dans ces formations par Eugène Robert en automne 1833. Une autre dent de théropode, celle-ci identifiable de manière incontestable, fut collectée en, ou avant, juillet 1835 par Bruno Marmin comme en atteste une lettre inédite à Jules Desnoyers ; 4) Le genre Poekilopleuron Eudes-Deslongchamps, 1836 et son espèce type P. bucklandii Eudes-Deslongchamps, 1836, du Calcaire de Caen (Bathonien moyen), ont été créés de manière valide en 1836 ; 5) l’humérus de sauropode découvert dans le Crétacé supérieur de la plaine de Lisle près de Périgueux et figuré par Paul Gervais en 1852 fut donné au Muséum d’Histoire naturelle à Paris par un certain Simon Bornet en 1841 ; 6) l’humérus de sauropode du grès vert (Albien) de Bédoin près du mont Ventoux, décrit par Gervais en 1852 sous le nom d’Aepisaurus elephantinus, fut découvert par Prosper Renaux en 1841. Ce dernier effectua des dessins du spécimen à partir desquels une lithographie restée inédite fut réalisée. Renaux est ainsi le premier à avoir découvert et étudié un dinosaure, authentifié de manière incontestable, dans le Crétacé provençal. Les affinités de cet os avec les genres Megalosaurus et Iguanodon furent reconnues par Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville dès 1842.

Photonic integration is an appealing technology for emerging applications in communications, medical diagnostics and sensing. Silicon Photonics presents a highly attractive solution for large-scale photonic integration, principally because it is based on well-established CMOS-fabrication technologies. However, Silicon photonics can be difficult and expensive to implement, as it requires complex device design, fabrication and packaging capabilities. Photonic Libraries And Technology for Manufacturing (PLAT4M) is a major European project that brings together the key capabilities required to develop solutions for a range of Silicon photonic-based applications. This paper will present an overview of the PLAT4M project. It will present, in detail, a key application demonstrator (Coherent Beam Combiner), highlighting the ability of the project team to develop an integrated Silicon Photonic sub-system, from design, through to device fabrication, packaging and final test. The paper also highlights the need to consider additional capabilities besides device fabrication, such as packaging, which are critical to achieving fully operational sub-systems.

This study developed the "ECUME" risk-based approach to identify and prioritize critical impact pathways to be considered in cumulative impact assessment of offshore windfarms, and for future research. The prioritization framework has been tested on two offshore windfarms projects located in the French part of the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, those of Fécamp and Courseulles-sur-Mer. The approach is based on a complete inventory of impact pathways, prioritizing those for which an impact assessment will be carried out. The aim was to avoid a "quantification bias" and elaborate a systemic vision. The novelty of the study is to apply a combination of expert judgement, consensus building, and a scoring system, to prioritize the pairs of pressures and receptors of the marine environment to work on. The scoring system is based on the ecological importance of receptors, the degree of knowledge on the effect of a pressure on a receptor and the sensitivity of each receptor to pressures. Priorities for research were also determined during the same process. Bringing together a large set of specialized marine environnement scientists, the initial challenge was to build a common vocabulary, and a shared understanding of the risk-based prioritization approach. This required significant time and effort but secured foundations for further work. This study confirms the increasingly shared view that adopting a risk-based approach considering adverse effects on receptors is an efficient way to assess cumulative impacts, to focus on critical impact pathways, and manage the scientific complexity and the significant uncertainties. • We prioritize issues in cumulative impact assessment of offshore windfarms. • Prioritization combines risk-based expert judgement and a scoring system. • It is also used to identify priority research areas for the future. • It was tested on two French offshore windfarm projects. • Such a risk-based approach allows to manage scientific complexity and uncertainties. The decision to reintroduce a species can be difficult owing to conflicting opinions and objectives as well as uncertainty over the outcome. Structured decision making addresses these considerations by identifying realistic fundamental objectives and building achievable management alternatives within a quantitative modeling framework. The process is driven by participation of stakeholders that represent diverse objectives, policy mandates, and opinions regarding decision alternatives. We applied structured decision making to evaluate the reintroduction of Bull Trout Salvelinus confluentus into the lower Pend Oreille River in northeastern Washington State. We engaged stakeholders from tribal, municipal, county, state, and federal agencies to specify fundamental objectives, formulate feasible reintroduction decisions, and conceptualize a modeling framework that included biological information and stakeholder assumptions. Stakeholders requested iterative decision sets to determine the optimal recipient streams and release strategies. The optimal decision—based on the fundamental objective of maximizing adult abundance at year 10—was artificial propagation of 4,500 juvenile Bull Trout coupled with translocation of 25 adult migrants to be reintroduced into a tributary and lake system (Sullivan Lake/Harvey Creek) that produced at least 18% more adult fish relative to alternatives. Sensitivity analyses were robust to the identity of the recipient stream (i.e., Sullivan Lake/Harvey Creek was always the optimal recipient stream) but suggested that maximizing the number of artificially produced juveniles released could generate a similar number of adult Bull Trout as the coupled‐release strategy. Results also suggested that ensuring fish passage at Albeni Falls Dam on the main‐stem Pend Oreille River could increase the abundance of adult fish. The process followed for this case study can be adapted to similar decisions regarding reintroduction or other translocations of fish in other systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A segregated hatchery program promotes conservation by limiting the amount of overlap in return timing and spawning locations of hatchery- and natural-origin fish. The objective of the present study was to use radiotelemetry data collected from 2005 to 2007 to better understand the level of spatial and temporal segregation between hatchery and natural-origin steelheadOncorhynchus mykissin the Eagle Creek basin, Oregon. The analysis resulted in three key findings. First, hatchery-origin winter steelhead were unlikely to migrate into the North Fork Eagle Creek, a tributary that has historically lacked any hatchery releases or influence, suggesting a high level of segregation from the natural-origin population returning to that stream. Second, hatchery fish arrived at the lower fish ladder on Eagle Creek and at Eagle Creek National Fish Hatchery (NFH) earlier than natural-origin fish, suggesting that broodstock management practices to maintain an early returning hatchery stock (i.e., temporal segregation) have been somewhat successful. Finally, regardless of the differential arrival timing to Eagle Creek NFH, there is evidence of an increased probability of spatial and temporal overlap of the populations as the return progresses, and this may be explained by successful reproduction of hatchery-origin fish in main-stem Eagle Creek. Integrated and segregated hatchery programs should be monitored periodically to ensure that they are meeting their stated goals. A singular evangelizing experience, the 30 Missions of the Guaraní, established by the Society of Jesus in Paraguay (1609-1768), have been depicted like a utopic Arcadia. The Jesuits would applied a pastoral ideology, treating the Indians as a human flock, as an alternative model to colonial violence. This article aims to establish the practical and concrete role of sheep herding in the Reductions’ daily life, through the analysis of local-use documents written in Guaraní. These texts reveal a gap between the weight achieved by pastoralism in missionary imagery and the marginal presence of sheep as living beings. Faced with a hostile environment, they were also victims of violence from the Guaraní themselves, who were aware of the functions these animals endorsed in Christian discourse and colonial rule.

¿Cómo explicar la existencia, entre las treinta Reducciones jesuíticas del Paraguay (1609-1768), de una misión designada a partir de los tres mártires de Japón? Mediante el estudio de un sermón en lengua guaraní dedicado por un indígena predicador al martirio de Nagasaki (1597), este artículo demuestra que la referencia a Asia celebra en realidad un martirio local, el de los tres misioneros del Ka’aro (1628) y tiene como meta galvanizar a los guaraníes cristianos contra los traficantes de esclavos brasileños. De esta manera, se trata de cuestionar el prejuicio historiográfico según el cual las Reducciones serían un enclave aislacionista en periferia del imperio español. Por lo contrario, los indígenas del Paraguay y su élite letrada demuestran una conciencia de los alcances de la geopolítica internacional y no dejan de movilizarse ante los numerosos enemigos de la Corona, próximos o lejanos, sin salir de sus misiones.

Air quality and related health effects are not only affected by policies directly addressed at air pollution but also by other environmental strategies such as climate mitigation. This study addresses how different climate policy pathways indirectly bear upon air pollution in terms of improved human health in Europe. To this end, we put in perspective mitigation costs and monetised health benefits of reducing PM 2.5 (particles less than 2.5 μm in diameter) and ozone concentrations. Air quality in Europe and related health impacts were assessed using a comprehensive modelling chain, based on global and regional climate and chemistry-transport models together with a health impact assessment tool. This allows capturing both the impact of climate policy on emissions of air pollutants and the geophysical impact of climate change on air quality. Results are presented for projections at the 2050 horizon, for a set of consistent air pollution and climate policy scenarios, combined with population data from the UN's World Population Prospects, and are expressed in terms of morbidity and mortality impacts of PM 2.5 and ozone pollution and their monetised damage equivalent. The analysis shows that enforcement of current European air quality policies would effectively reduce health impacts from PM 2.5 in Europe even in the absence of climate policies (life years lost from the exposure to PM 2.5 decrease by 78% between 2005 and 2050 in the reference scenario), while impacts for ozone depend on the ambition level of international climate policies. A move towards stringent climate policies on a global scale, in addition to limiting global warming, creates co-benefits in terms of reduced health impacts (68% decrease in life years lost from the exposure to PM 2.5 and 85% decrease in premature deaths from ozone in 2050 in the mitigation scenario relative to the reference scenario) and air pollution cost savings (77%) in Europe. These co-benefits are found to offset at least 85% of the additional cost of climate policy in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
