Abstract

Electrochemistry ecosystems are promising for accelerating the design and discovery of electrochemical systems for energy storage and conversion, by automating significant parts of workflows that combine synthesis and characterization experiments with computations. They require the integration of flow controllers, solvent containers, pumps, fraction collectors, and potentiostats, all connected to an electrochemical cell. These are specialized instruments with custom software that is not originally designed for network integration. We developed network and software solutions for electrochemical workflows that adapt system and instrument settings in real-time for multiple rounds of experiments. We demonstrate this automated workflow by remotely operating the instruments and collecting their measurements to generate a voltammogram (I-V profile) of an electrolyte solution in an electrochemical cell. These measurements are made available at the remote computing system and used for subsequent analysis. In this paper, we focus on a novel, analytically validated machine learning (ML) method for an electrochemistry ecosystem to ensure that I-V measurements are consistent with the normal experimental conditions, and to detect abnormal conditions, such as disconnected electrodes or low cell content volume., Comment: published at eScience 2023

Abstract

We propose a framework to develop cyber solutions to support the remote steering of science instruments and measurements collection over instrument-computing ecosystems. It is based on provisioning separate data and control connections at the network level, and developing software modules consisting of Python wrappers for instrument commands and Pyro server-client codes that make them available across the ecosystem network. We demonstrate automated measurement transfers and remote steering operations in a microscopy use case for materials research over an ecosystem of Nion microscopes and computing platforms connected over site networks. The proposed framework is currently under further refinement and being adopted to science workflows with automated remote experiments steering for autonomous chemistry laboratories and smart energy grid simulations., Comment: Paper accepted for presentation at IEEE SMARTCOMP 2023

3. Predicting the phase stability of multi-component high entropy compounds

Abstract

A generic method to estimate the relative feasibility of formation of high entropy compounds in a single phase, directly from first principles, is developed. As a first step, the relative formation abilities of 56 multi-component, AO, oxides were evaluated. These were constructed from 5 cation combinations chosen from A={Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Zn}. Candidates for multi-component oxides are predicted from descriptors related to the enthalpy and configurational entropy obtained from the mixing enthalpies of two component oxides. The utility of this approach is evaluated by comparing the predicted combinations with the experimentally realized entropy stabilized oxide, (MgCoCuNiZn)O. In the second step, Monte Carlo simulations are utilized to investigate the phase composition and local ionic segregation as a function of temperature. This approach allows for the evaluation of potential secondary phases, thereby making realistic predictions of novel multi-component compounds that can be synthesized., Comment: 43 pages, 5 main figures and 8 supplemental figures. Abstract

Quantum interference on the kagome lattice generates electronic bands with narrow bandwidth, called flat bands. Crystal structures incorporating this lattice can host strong electron correlations with non-standard ingredients, but only if these bands lie at the Fermi level. In the six compounds with the CoSn structure type (FeGe, FeSn, CoSn, NiIn, RhPb, and PtTl) the transition metals form a kagome lattice. The two iron variants are robust antiferromagnets so we focus on the latter four and investigate their thermodynamic and transport properties. We consider these results and calculated band structures to locate and characterize the flat bands in these materials. We propose that CoSn and RhPb deserve the community's attention for exploring flat band physics., Comment: 12pg 11fig

5. Physical properties and thermal stability of Fe5GeTe2 single crystals

Abstract

The magnetic and transport properties of Fe-deficient Fe5GeTe2 single crystals (Fe5-xGeTe2 with x~0.3) were studied and the impact of thermal processing was explored. Quenching crystals from the growth temperature has been previously shown to produce a metastable state that undergoes a strongly hysteretic first-order transition upon cooling below ~100K. The first-order transition impacts the magnetic properties, yielding an enhancement in the Curie temperature T_C from 270 to 310K. In the present work, T_HT ~550K has been identified as the temperature above which metastable crystals are obtained via quenching. Diffraction experiments reveal a structural change at this temperature, and significant stacking disorder occurs when samples are slowly cooled through this temperature range. The transport properties are demonstrated to be similar regardless of the crystal's thermal history. The scattering of charge carriers appears to be dominated by moments fluctuating on the Fe(1) sublattice, which remain dynamic down to 100-120K. Maxima in the magnetoresistance and anomalous Hall resistance are observed near 120K. The Hall and Seebeck coefficients are also impacted by magnetic ordering on the Fe(1) sublattice. The data suggest that both electrons and holes contribute to conduction above 120K, but that electrons dominate at lower temperature when all of the Fe sublattices are magnetically ordered. This study demonstrates a strong coupling of the magnetism and transport properties in Fe5-xGeTe2 and complements the previous results that demonstrated strong magnetoelastic coupling as the Fe(1) moments order. Abstract

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KSL) is a theoretically predicted state of matter whose fractionalized quasiparticles are distinct from bosonic magnons, the fundamental excitation in ordered magnets. The layered honeycomb antiferromagnet $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is a KSL candidate material, as it can be driven to a magnetically disordered phase by application of an in-plane magnetic field, with $H_c \sim 7$ T. Here we report a detailed characterization of the magnetic excitation spectrum of this material by high-resolution time-domain terahertz (THz) spectroscopy. We observe two sharp magnon resonances whose frequencies and amplitudes exhibit a discontinuity as a function of applied magnetic field, as well as two broader peaks at higher energy. Below the N\'eel temperature, we find that linear spin wave theory can account for all of these essential features of the spectra when a $C_3$-breaking distortion of the honeycomb lattice and the presence of structural domains are taken into account., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures in the main text. Abstract

Quantum matter provides an effective vacuum out of which arise emergent particles not corresponding to any experimentally detected elementary particle. Topological quantum materials in particular have become a focus of intense research in part because of the remarkable possibility to realize Majorana fermions, with their potential for new, decoherence-free quantum computing architectures. In this paper we undertake a study on high-quality single crystal of $\alpha-RuCl_3$ which has been identified as a material realizing a proximate Kitaev state, a topological quantum state with magnetic Majorana fermions. Four-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of dynamical correlations measured using neutrons is uniquely powerful for probing such magnetic states. We discover unusual signals, including an unprecedented column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center which is remarkably stable with temperature. This is straightforwardly accounted for in terms of the Majorana excitations present in Kitaev's topological quantum spin liquid. Other, more delicate, features in the scattering can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. Abstract

We report on the optimization of synthesis of iron-selenide (non-arsenic) superconducting powders that are based on '122' composition, with optimal Tc = 38 K and Jc = 10^5 A/cm2 (4 K). We also report on the wire proof-of concept for these materials, by producing ~ 40 ft of wire that produce Ic. The 122 selenides are more difficult to synthesize and have more complex crystal structures compared to '11' selenides (FeSe and FeSe1-xTex), but they do offer higher Tc and might provoke a natural extension for 11 work., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures; Submitted to SuST

Abstract

Catalysis is indispensable to chemical processes and relevant to many aspects of modern life. Owing to the intriguing electronic structures and good ionic properties, multivalent transition metal oxides have attracted attention as key catalysts for various energy and environmental applications. Here, we demonstrate that brownmillerite strontium cobaltite (SrCoO2.5) can be a good cathode material for sold oxide fuel cells and rechargeable batteries due to the open oxygen frameworks. When the orientation of oxygen vacancy channels (OVCs) is properly controlled, one can drastically increase the surface oxygen exchange rate approximately up to two orders of magnitude. The improved oxygen reduction kinetics is attributed to a substantial decrease in the thermal activation energy. Importantly, the strong enhancement of crystallographic orientation-dependent oxygen reduction reaction required the creation of neither structural disorders nor chemical doping. Thus, our epitaxial approach can pave a novel pathway to providing precise interpretation of oxygen reduction reactions and to developing oxide-based energy materials.

Abstract

We study the flow of a shear-thinning, chemically-reacting fluid that could be used to model the flow of the synovial fluid. The actual geometry where the flow of the synovial fluid takes place is very complicated, and therefore the governing equations are not amenable to simple mathematical analysis. In order to understand the response of the model, we choose to study the flow in a simple geometry. While the flow domain is not a geometry relevant to the flow of the synovial fluid in the human body it yet provides a flow which can be used to assess the efficacy of different models that have been proposed to describe synovial fluids. We study the flow in the annular region between two cylinders, one of which is undergoing unsteady oscillations about their common axis, in order to understand the quintessential behavioral characteristics of the synovial fluid. We use the three models suggested by Hron et al. [ J. Hron, J. M\'{a}lek, P. Pust\v{e}jovsk\'{a}, K. R. Rajagopal, On concentration dependent shear-thinning behavior in modeling of synovial fluid flow, Adv. in Tribol. (In Press).] to study the problem, by appealing to a semi-inverse method. The assumed structure for the velocity field automatically satisfies the constraint of incompressibility, and the balance of linear momentum is solved together with a convection-diffusion equation. The results are compared to those associated with the Newtonian model. 16. Integrated Nano-Domains of Disordered and Ordered Spinel Phases in LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 for Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract

Recent calculations and experimental data suggest that understanding the local ordering behavior of Ni/Mn will be critical to optimize the electrochemical properties of LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) high voltage spinel. In this study, we systematically controlled the evolution of Ni and Mn ordering in LNMO samples by annealing them at 700 °C in air for different dwelling times, followed by quenching to room temperature. The long- and short-range ordering behavior of Ni and Mn were analyzed by combining neutron powder diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) data. The results show that the fraction of ordered phase increases rapidly during initial annealing at 700 °C for 6 h, and accompanied by decreasing amounts of secondary phases. Annealing longer than 6 h led to the growth in size of ordered domains (i.e., increased segregation of ordered and disordered domains) along with a slow increase in the fraction of ordered phase. The dependence of open circuit voltages (OCVs) of the LNMO on the degree of ordering agrees well with recent calculations using the density functional theory. The increase in the degree of ordering increases the open circuit voltage (OCV) and the initial capacity but reduces cycle life and rate capability. The LNMO delivered optimal battery performances (capacity, cycle life, and rate capability) after annealing at 700 °C for 2 h. This partially ordered sample showed the respective advantages from both disordered and ordered spinels: better spinel-phase purity (thus, higher initial capacity) from the ordered LNMO and better cycle life and rate capability from the disordered LNMO. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

Abstract

Antimony oxides are important materials for catalysis and flame-retardant applications. The two most common phases, α -Sb2O3 (senarmontite) and β -Sb2O3 (valentinite), have been studied extensively. Specific focus has been placed recently on their lattice dynamics properties and how they relate to the α - β phase transformation and their potential anharmonicity. However, there has not been any direct investigation of anharmonicity in these systems, and a surprising lack of low-temperature structural information has prevented further study. Here, we report the powder neutron diffraction data of both phases of Sb2O3, as well as structural information. α -Sb2O3 behaved as expected, but β -Sb2O3 revealed a small region of zero thermal expansion along the c axis. Additionally, while the β phase matched well with reported atomic displacement parameters, the α phase displayed a marked deviation. This data will enable further investigations into these systems. Abstract

Wadsley–Roth phased niobates are promising anode materials for lithium‐ion batteries, while their inherently low electrical conductivity still limits their rate‐capability. Herein, a novel doped Mo1.5W1.5Nb14O44 (MWNO) material is facilely prepared via an ionothermal‐synthesis‐assisted doping strategy. The detailed crystal structure of MWNO is characterized by neutron powder diffraction and aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope, unveiling the full occupation of Mo6+‐dopant at the t1 tetrahedral site. In half‐cells, MWNO exhibits enhanced fast‐rechargeability. The origin of the improved performance is investigated by ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, density functional theory (DFT) computation, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, revealing that bandgap narrowing improves the electrical conductivity of MWNO. Furthermore, operando X‐ray diffraction elucidates that MWNO exhibits a typical solid‐solution phase conversion‐based lithium‐ion insertion/extraction mechanism with reversible structural evolution during the electrochemical reaction. The boosted lithium‐ion diffusivity of MWNO, due to the Mo6+/W6+ doping effect, is confirmed by a galvanostatic intermittent titration technique and DFT. With the simultaneously enhanced electrical conductivity and lithium‐ion diffusivity, MWNO successfully demonstrates its fast‐rechargeability and practicality in the LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4‐coupled full‐cells. Therefore, this work illustrates the potential of ionothermal synthesis in energy storage materials and provides a mechanistic understanding of the doping effect on improving material's electrochemical performance.
