BACKGROUND: Failure of Alzheimers disease and related diseases (ADRD) research studies to include and engage Black participants is a major issue, which limits the impact and generalizability of research findings. Little is known about participation of Black adults in online ADRD-related research registries. OBJECTIVES: As part of the Community Engaged Digital Alzheimers Research (CEDAR) Study, this study aims to increase our understanding of facilitators and barriers of Black adults to participating in ADRD-related online registries, as well as to understand their preferences for communication channels. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, MEASUREMENTS: We invited all Black participants enrolled in the Brain Health Registry (BHR) to complete a cross-sectional online survey. The survey consisted of rating scales and open-text questions asking about their attitudes towards brain health research, reasons for joining and continuing to participate in BHR, difficulties with participating, and preferences for modes of contact and website usage. RESULTS: Of all invited Black BHR participants (N=3,636), 198 (5.5%) completed the survey. The mean age was 58.4 (SD=11.3), mean years of education were 16.3 (SD=2.4), and 85.5% identified as female. Reported facilitators for joining and continuing to participate in BHR were personal interest (e.g., learning more about own brain health) and altruism (e.g., helping research). Among additional registry features which could encourage return, receiving feedback or scores about BHR tasks was rated the highest. Of those who found BHR participation difficult (21%), the most frequent reason was time burden. The most preferred way of receiving study information was via email. Participants reported that the websites that they used the most were YouTube and Facebook. DISCUSSION: The results of our study can inform the development of culturally-responsive registry features and engagement efforts to improve inclusion and participation of Black adults

Hydrogen sulphide (~S) as a seam gas has occurred in several locations in the Gennan Creek seam at Southern Colliery . This paper overviews the techniques developed to quantify the ~S content of the seam, overviews research into controlling and reducing ~S emissions from the seam, and details the procedures used to mine through the ~S zone in 702 longwall panel. Learning points from research and mining experience are reviewed for application in the next longwall block.

Modifications of plating conditions improved the properties and plating characteristics of hot-hard Cr-Fe alloys for use as erosion-resistant electroplate linings for gun tubes. Stress reduction in the plate and better plate coverage of the machinery scratches on steel were the principal improvements. A plate was deposited on an electropolished bore of an erosion- gage weapon insert without a Cr-strike plate; the alloy adhered well to the steel surface after heating for 2.5 hr at 750 deg F. The wear-resistance of Cr- Fe plate was improved by adding SiOsub2 and glycine to the plating bath to modify the deposit from a columnar to a banded structure. The banded, unlike the columnar structure, developed stress cracks, but is expected to provide increased uniformity on gun tube bores.

Research was conducted to develop electrodeposited coatings sup erior to Zn and Cd plate for aircraft steel parts, particularly in tropical regions. A 50% Mn-50% Zn coating, superior to Zn under wet-dry cabinet conditions, was prepared by heat-treating a duplex coating of Mn and Zn electroplates to cause interdiffusion. Diffusion coatings of Mn-Sn alloys containing 40 to 60% Mn showed better inherent corrosion resistance than pure Mn. No sound Zn-Ag codeposits were obtained with either an iodide or a thiosulfate solution. Mn-Ni codeposits having a low Mn content were obtained from NH sub 4 salt solutions. Evidence of diffusion was found after heat-treating Mn and Ni duplex plates; after 21 hrs., a strong Fe pattern and an unknown phase were found. Slight interdiffusion of Zn and Cr electroplates was indicated. No interdiffusion was detected of Cd and Cr or of Mn and Cd electroplates. Nonadherent, coarsely crystalline deposits, containing mainly Pb, resulted from attempts to codeposit Zn and Pb. Zn-Ni-coated 4130 steel panels rusted rapidly in the wet-dry test; the rate of rusting decreased by increasing the Ni content from 25 to 50%. Both Cd-Sn diffusion and codeposited coatings containing about 50% Cd were comparable in wet-dry behavior to pure Cd coatings; Cd-Ag codeposited coatings rusted early in the wet-dry test, but subsequent rusting progressed slowly. A nonsacrificial- type Fe-Cr alloy containing 6% Fe was not superior to Cr-plated panels in the wet-dry cabinet. A method is proposed for rating coatings after wet-dry exposure. Experiments were continued on the application of 94% chromium, 6% iron alloy plate to the bore surfaces of cannon. After moving-anode tests were unsuccessful, a satisfactory technique was developed using full-length anodes in the bore of 4-foot-long sections of 40-mm gun tubes. Plates were then produced with good appearance, good plating efficiency, and adequate dimensional control, but the adhesion to the base metal was not good enough for gun-type service. Several erosion-gage weapon inserts were plated and test fired. Each test resulted in failure by separation of the plate from the bore surface. Some improvement in adhesion was achieved by a thin chromium plate between the steel base and the chromium-iron alloy plate. A bonding heat treatment also effected some improvement. However, erosion-gage weapon-firing tests showed that adhesion was still not sufficient to withstand the conditions encountered in gun tube service.
