1. EFFECT OF RE-OPENING OF A MIGRATORY PATHWAY FOR EEL (ANGUILLA ANGUILLA, L.) AT A WATERSHED SCALE

Abstract

The construction of the Arzal dam eel ladder in 1996 allowed enhancing fluvial recruitment from a negligible level, limited to yellow eels crossing sluice and dam overflow, to a level ranging from 0.2 to 2.4 million glass eels per year. The effect of such recruitment on the eel population (Anguilla anguilla) of the Vilaine watershed was analysed at 19 electrofishing sampling stations. From 1998 to 2003, average densities of eel varied from 0.34 to 0.72 eels.m-2, with a maximum reached in 1999 of 0.82 eels.m-2. Fluvial recruitment failure, together with density dependent mortalities, explains the drop in yellow eel densities observed from 1998 in the downstream area (< 50 rkm) and from 2000 in the middle stream area (50100 rkm). The largest densities consisted of a large proportion eels classified as age 1 and the increased density in middle stream sectors was interpreted as the consequence of density-dependent migration at the periphery of a saturated area. The construction of 13 eel ladders on the Vilaine waterway in 1999 and 2000 was followed by increased densities in the upstream area (> 100 rkm) in 2001. The comparison to an electrofishing survey performed at 17 stations in 1981, ten years after dam construction, confirmed that ladder installation increased densities by a factor 6 and modified the population structure, with densities of eels age 0 and 1 multiplied 29 fold. This change corresponded to reduced escapement rates to the glass eel fishery (1% to 5%). Considering this result, a preliminary escapement target of 240 glass eel per km2 of watershed area or 1 500 glass eel per ha of water surface, is proposed and discussed for glass eel fisheries.

Abstract

Glass eels (Anguilla anguilla) arriving after the fishing season in the Vilaine estuary (France) were caught by boat and at a trapping ladder located at a blocking dam upstream in the estuary. They were marked with Bismarck brown, rhodamine B or neutral red, and released into the estuary. The effect of marking on behaviour, mortality and recapture differed according to the dye and concentration used. The glass eels also differed in response to marking according to their origin. Estuarine glass eels were clearly desynchronized in their selective tidal stream transport and left the release area after a few tidal cycles. Trapped glass eels were less sensitive to marking. They remained in the release area and were recaptured in larger number both in the trapping ladder and in the estuary. These results supported a model of two behavioral fractions in the estuary: flow-carried migrants and active glass eels with stronger rheotactic behaviour. The proportion of active glass eels in the estuary shifted from none for the two weeks after the fishery closure, to 10% value of the total stock. At the trapping ladder, the migration ended in June each year, while a large stock was still present in the estuary. These observations favour the interpretation of a short duration of the active phase at this site followed by the transition towards a more benthic behavior. The daily efficiency of the trapping ladder was calculated as 4% of the active stock from both stock estimations and average recapture rate. This value was consistent with the low annual efficiency of the trapping ladder, calculated as 30% of the estuarine stock of glass eels that arrived after the fishing season.

Abstract

A double mark, called a transition ring, or elver mark, was identifiable in light microscopy on otoliths of young yellow eels. In the Vilaine watershed, the radius of this mark decreased from 178 μm in yellow eels corresponding to glass eels arriving in autumn 1997 to 163 μm in yellow eels arriving in spring 1998. The mean transition ring radius of the freshwater eel population in the Vilaine river had an intermediate value between spring and autumn recruits. This implies that it consisted of a mixture of spring and autumn recruits. In the Vilaine estuary and the Frémur populations, the mean radius of the transition rings was close to the autumn one. The springtime recruits formed 68 % of freshwater and 15 % of estuarine population in the Vilaine for the 1998 cohort. This result was in sharp contrast with the available assessments of recruitment, which both in estuary and in the fluvial part of the watershed, were dominated by spring recruits. This contrast is possibly the consequence of density-dependent mortality, which would have been particularly important in springtime for glass eels whose migration was inhibited by the dam.

Les anguilles prélevées dans cinq zones de salinité variable du littoral de Bretagne sud, ont été examinées pour leur infestation présente et passée par le parasite Anguillicola crassus (Nematoda, dracunculoidea). Les anguilles vivant dans des milieux peu salés au contact de la zone dulçaquicole sont très contaminées avec des prévalences supérieures à 90%, dont 61% concernent des prévalences présentes. Par contre, celles vivant dans des conditions estuariennes (Golfe du Morbihan) sont relativement épargnées avec des prévalences de l’ordre de 15%, dont en moyenne moins de la moitié concernent des prévalences présentes. La salinité des baies et des estuaires semble donc pouvoir préserver de la contamination les populations d’anguilles côtières dont la gestion devient un enjeu prioritaire pour le stock d’anguilles.

Abstract

Type-III-burst radio signals can be mimicked in the laboratory via laser-plasma interaction. Instead of an electron beam generating Langmuir waves (LW) in the interplanetary medium, the LWs are created by a laser interacting with a millimeter-sized plasma through the stimulated Raman instability. In both cases, the LWs feed the Langmuir decay instability which scatters them in several directions. The resulting LWs may couple to form electromagnetic emission at twice the plasma frequency, which has been detected in the interplanetary medium, and recently in a laboratory laser experiment [Marqu\`es et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 135001 (2020)]. This article presents the first numerical analysis of this laser configuration using particle-in-cell simulations, providing details on the wave spectra that are too difficult to measure in experiments. The role of some parameters is addressed, with a focus on laser intensity, in order to illustrate the behavior of the electromagnetic emission's angular distribution and polarization.

Abstract

NenuFAR (New extension in Nan\c{c}ay upgrading LoFAR) is a new radio telescope developed and built on the site of the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory. It is designed to observe the largely unexplored frequency window from 10 to 85\,MHz, offering a high sensitivity across its full bandwidth. NenuFAR has started its "early science" operation in July 2019, with 58\% of its final collecting area being available. Pulsars are one of the major topics for the scientific exploitation of this frequency range and represent an important challenge in terms of instrumentation. Designing instrumentation at these frequencies is complicated by the need to compensate for the effects of both the interstellar medium and the ionosphere on the observed signal. Our real-time pipeline LUPPI (Low frequency Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrumentation) is able to cope with a high data rate and to provide real-time coherent de-dispersion down to the lowest frequencies reached by NenuFAR (10\,MHz). The full backend functionality is described, as well as the main pulsar observing modes (folded, single-pulse, waveform, and dynamic spectrum). This instrumentation allowed us to detect 172 pulsars in our first targeted search below 85\,MHz, including 10 millisecond pulsars (6 of which detected for the first time below 100 MHz). We also present some of the "early science" results of NenuFAR on pulsars: a high frequency resolution mapping of PSR B1919$+$21's emission profile and a detailed observation of single-pulse sub-structures from PSR~B0809$+$74 down to 16\,MHz, the high rate of giant-pulse emission from the Crab pulsar detected at 68.7\,MHz (43 events/min), and the illustration of the very good timing performance of the instrumentation, allowing us to study dispersion measure variations in great detail., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, submitted to A&A

Abstract

A new experimental platform based on laser-plasma interaction is proposed to explore the fundamental processes of wave coupling at the origin of interplanetary radio emissions. It is applied to the study of electromagnetic (EM) emission at twice the plasma frequency ($2\omega_p$) observed during solar bursts and thought to result from the coalescence of two Langmuir waves (LWs). In the interplanetary medium, the first LW is excited by electron beams, while the second is generated by electrostatic decay of Langmuir waves. In the present experiment, instead of an electron beam, an energetic laser propagating through a plasma excites the primary LW, with characteristics close to those at near-Earth orbit. The EM radiation at $2\omega_p$ is observed at different angles. Its intensity, spectral evolution and polarization confirm the LW-coalescence scenario., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Post fishing mortality of the glass eel was monitored in 2007 in the Vilaine estuary. The mortality of the glass eels varied from 2 to 82% (mean 42%) in the two days following the fishing. The mortality of samples collected by hand nets or from the trapping ladder was null. Alterations of the skin mucus were analyzed by the use of Indigo carmine. The mortality was significantly correlated with body injuries, but not to other environmental factors. The presence of a large injury on the body systematically led to the death of the glass eels, and among these dead glass eels, only 3.5% had no external injury. These results are discussed, along with the results from other estuaries, with a view to transport glass eels across Europe, with the objective of restoring the eel stock.

Abstract

We discuss properties of type III bursts which change sign of their drift rate from negative to positive and vice versa. Moreover such bursts may change sign of their drift rates more than once. These specific type III bursts were observed simultaneously by radio telescopes UTR-2, URAN-2 and NDA in frequency band 8-41 MHz. The negative drift rates of these bursts are close to those of usual decameter type III bursts and variate from -0.84 MHz/s to -5.56 MHz/s. The positive drift rates of specific type III bursts vary in the wider range from 0.44MHz/s to 12 MHz/s. Unlike inverted U-bursts these type III bursts still drift from the high frequencies to the low frequencies in spite of the change of the drift rates signs. Our basic explanation of the positive drift rate of these type III burst differs from the common assumption that positive drift rates of Type III bursts are connected with electron beam propagation towards the Sun. We propose that, even if electron beams move outward from the Sun, they can generate type III bursts with positive drift rates if in some regions of the solar corona the group velocities of type III radio emissions are lower than the velocities of the electron beams., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

The "Square Kilometre Array" (SKA) is a large international radio telescope project characterised, as suggested by its name, by a total collecting area of approximately one square kilometre, and consisting of several interferometric arrays to observe at metric and centimetric wavelengths. The deployment of the SKA will take place in two sites, in South Africa and Australia, and in two successive phases. From its Phase 1, the SKA will be one of the most formidable scientific machines ever deployed by mankind, and by far the most impressive in terms of data throughput and required computing power. 14. Low energy Langmuir cavitons: asymptotic limit of weak turbulence

Abstract

Langmuir turbulence is an archetype of wave turbulence in plasma physics. By means of 1D-1V Vlasov-Poisson simulations, we show that coherent structures, called Langmuir cavitons, are generated by the long time evolution of Langmuir weak turbulence, thus illustrating the breakdown of a weak turbulence regime. These structures correspond to an equilibrium between the pressure forces and the ponderomotive force resulting from high frequency Langmuir oscillations. Langmuir cavitons are typical features of strong Langmuir turbulence expected to be generated at high energy and to saturate when Langmuir energy is of the order of the plasma thermal energy. Despite this wide-spread belief, here we observe that cavitons, emerging from weak Langmuir turbulence evolution, saturate at much lower energies. We show that these Langmuir coherent structures are characterized by a much larger length scale with respect to the Debye length. This gives evidence that "large" and "shallow" stable cavitons should be seen in space plasma observations. The transition toward strong turbulence is shown to be a consequence of an initial weak turbulent inverse cascade. The electrostatic decay enables energy transfer from a finite amplitude Langmuir to a backscattered daughter Langmuir wave and ion acoustic density fluctuations. This mechanism is thought to be a first step for the generation of type III solar radio emissions at twice the plasma frequency. The electrostatic decay is here investigated through Vlasov-Poisson simulations by considering Langmuir localized wave packets in the case Te = Tp. Abstract

The narrowband kilometric radiation (nKOM) is a Jovian low-frequency radio component identified as a plasma emission produced in the region of the Io plasma torus. Measurements from the Waves instrument onboard the Juno spacecraft permitted to establish the distribution of nKOM occurrence and intensity as a function of frequency and latitude. We have developed a 3D geometrical model that can simulate at large scale the plasma emissions occurrence observed by a spacecraft based on an internal Jovian magnetic field model and a diffusive equilibrium model of the plasma density in Jupiter's inner magnetosphere. With this model, we propose a new method to discriminate the generation mechanism, wave mode, beaming and radio source location of plasma emissions. Here, this method is applied to the study of the nKOM observed from all latitudes by the Juno/Waves experiment to identify which conditions reasonably reproduce the observed occurrence distribution versus frequency and latitude. The results allow us to exclude the two main nKOM models published so far, and to show that the emission is produced at the local plasma frequency and then beamed anti-parallel to the local density gradient into free space. We also propose that depending on its latitude, Juno observes two distinct kinds of nKOM: the low frequency nKOM in ordinary mode at high latitudes, and the high frequency nKOM on extraordinary mode at low latitudes. Abstract

Over the past two decades, there has been a growing interest in the role of universities in developing generic skills, in addition to disciplinary ones, to help students adapt to a changing workplace. The need to develop these skills is particularly critical for healthcare students who must face challenges in health systems. This scoping study, following Arksey and O'Malley's ([2005]. Scoping studies: Towards a methodological framework. International Journal of Social Research Methodology, 8(1), 19-32. https://doi.org/10.1080/1364557032000119616) method provides an overview of the scientific literature on generic skills in health studies. The definitions, categorizations, and measurement tools from 43 articles were mapped and summarized and gaps were identified. Definitions and terms were varied but overall, generic skills are considered cross-disciplinary and cross-professional. Nevertheless, the term skill itself was not defined. The lack of consensus on categorization and assessment led us to propose a typology to group all the skills mentioned into four categories: personal, ideas and object-related, interpersonal and community-related skills. One conclusion is that generic skills are valued foremost in relation to labor market demands with an emphasis on skills such as knowledge, communication, and planning over ethical and citizenship skills that are essential for future healthcare professionals. Abstract

The twin STEREO spacecraft provide a unique tool to study the temporal evolution of the solar-wind properties in the ecliptic since their longitudinal separation increases with time. We derive the characteristic temporal variations at ∼ 1 AU between two different plasma parcels ejected from the same solar source by excluding the spatial variations from our datasets. As part of the onboard IMPACT instrument suite, the SWEA electron experiment provides the solar-wind electron core density at two different heliospheric vantage points. We analyze these density datasets between March and August 2007 and find typical solar minimum conditions. After adjusting for the theoretical time lag between the two spacecraft, we compare the two density datasets. We find that their correlation decreases as the time difference increases between two ejections. The correlation coefficient is about 0.80 for a time lag of a half day and 0.65 for two days. These correlation coefficients from the electron core density are somewhat lower than the ones from the proton bulk velocity obtained in an earlier study, though they are still high enough to consider the solar wind as persistent after two days. These quantitative results reflect the variability of the solar-wind properties in space and time, and they might serve as input for solar-wind models.

Abstract

Context. NenuFAR (New extension in Nançay upgrading LOFAR) is a new radio telescope developed and built on the site of the Nançay Radio Observatory. It is designed to observe the largely unexplored frequency window from 10 to 85 MHz, offering a high sensitivity across its full bandwidth. NenuFAR has started its "early science"operation in July 2019, with 58% of its final collecting area. Aims. Pulsars are one of the major phenomena utilized in the scientific exploitation of this frequency range and represent an important challenge in terms of instrumentation. Designing instrumentation at these frequencies is complicated by the need to compensate for the effects of both the interstellar medium and the ionosphere on the observed signal. We have designed a dedicated backend and developed a complete pulsar observation and data analysis pipeline, which we describe in detail in the present paper, together with first science results illustrating the diversity of the pulsar observing modes. Methods. Our real-Time pipeline LUPPI (Low frequency Ultimate Pulsar Processing Instrumentation) is able to cope with a high data rate and provide real-Time coherent de-dispersion down to the lowest frequencies reached by NenuFAR (10 MHz). The full backend functionality is described, as the available pulsar observing modes (folded, single-pulse, waveform, and dynamic spectrum). Results. We also present some of the early science results of NenuFAR on pulsars: The detection of 12 millisecond pulsars (eight of which are detected for the first time below 100 MHz); a high-frequency resolution mapping of the PSR B1919+21 emission profile and a detailed observation of single-pulse substructures from PSR B0809+74 down to 16 MHz; the high rate of giant-pulse emission from the Crab pulsar detected at 68.7 MHz (43 events per minute); and the illustration of the very good timing performance of the instrumentation, which allows us to study dispersion measure variations in great detail.

Abstract

Objectives: The present study aims to evaluate the effect of an online Recovery College (RC) program implemented in Quebec (Canada) during the COVID-19 pandemic. From October 2020 to June 2021, 27 training groups were conducted with a total of 362 attendees. Methods: Outcome was evaluated using a single group repeated measure design, assessing participants prior the training (T0), after the training (T1) and at follow up (T2). 107 learners of the Quebec RC program attended three two-hour sessions agreed to participate to the research. Results: Overall findings show at T1 a small but statistically significant reduction of anxiety and increase in empowerment, and below threshold reduction of stigmatizing attitudes and increase of wellbeing. Conversely, the medium-term changes at follow up were non-significant for all the outcome dimension except for anxiety. Conclusion: Findings suggest that the RC online program can be considered as a potential effective strategy to support self-regulation and empowerment of individuals and to reduce anxiety in the context of crisis for the general population.

Abstract

Prevalence, symptoms, and treatment of depression suggest that major depressive disorders (MDD) present sex differences. Social stress-induced neurovascular pathology is associated with depressive symptoms in male mice; however, this association is unclear in females. Here, we report that chronic social and subchronic variable stress promotes blood-brain barrier (BBB) alterations in mood-related brain regions of female mice. Targeted disruption of the BBB in the female prefrontal cortex (PFC) induces anxiety- and depression-like behaviours. By comparing the endothelium cell-specific transcriptomic profiling of the mouse male and female PFC, we identify several pathways and genes involved in maladaptive stress responses and resilience to stress. Furthermore, we confirm that the BBB in the PFC of stressed female mice is leaky. Then, we identify circulating vascular biomarkers of chronic stress, such as soluble E-selectin. Similar changes in circulating soluble E-selectin, BBB gene expression and morphology can be found in blood serum and postmortem brain samples from women diagnosed with MDD. Altogether, we propose that BBB dysfunction plays an important role in modulating stress responses in female mice and possibly MDD.

Abstract

Several research contributions have depicted the impact of the pandemic environment on healthcare and social care personnel. Even though the high prevalence of burnout depression and anxiety in healthcare settings before COVID-19 has been well documented in the research, the recent increase in psychological distress and mental health issues in healthcare and mental health workers should be attributed to the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the present study is to develop, evaluate, and compare a model of COVID-19 workplace stressors between two different territories, the Italian region of Lombardy and the Canadian province of Quebec. Within this model, burnout is depicted as the strongest determinant of mental health symptoms for mental health workers. In turn, the main workplace determinants of burnout are the perception of a lack of support from the organization and the fear of contracting COVID-19 at work. Findings also provide insights for designing interventions to promote and protect mental health workers in the context of the pandemic. In conclusion, it is necessary to monitor burnout and carefully analyze elements of organizational culture, in addition to offering clinical and psychological care for those in need. © 2022 by the authors. Résumé Reconnue comme la référence en matière de bonnes pratiques en santé mentale, l’approche du rétablissement (AR) implique une considération pour le processus de rétablissement personnel de l’individu et l’adoption de pratiques axées vers le rétablissement (Commission de la santé mentale du Canada, 2015; Shepherd et al., 2008, 2010). Le modèle de développement humain et du processus de production du handicap (MDH-PPH) conçoit que la participation sociale des personnes résulte de l’interaction entre les facteurs personnels et les caractéristiques de l’environnement, ces domaines étant d’égale importance dans la compréhension des situations de handicap vécues par une personne, ou par un groupe ou une communauté partageant des caractéristiques personnelles communes dans un même contexte (Fougeyrollas, 2010). Nous présentons dans cet article une analyse des ressemblances philosophiques entre l’AR et le MDH-PPH et amorçons une réflexion sur l’apport mutuel de ces approches dans la lutte contre les obstacles sociaux qui nuisent à la participation sociale des personnes en situation de vulnérabilité/handicap. Pour ce faire, une analyse philosophique de nature herméneutique a été réalisée. Cinq angles d’analyse ont été choisis : 1) anthropologique; 2) environnemental; 3) axiologique; 4) éthique; 5) politique. Quatorze éléments de ressemblances ont été décelés entre les deux approches pour l’ensemble des angles analysés justifiant un apport mutuel dans la compréhension des situations de ces personnes. Abstract

Résumé Contexte Malgré les ressources considérables consacrées et les efforts des nombreux acteurs concernés, l’écart entre la production de connaissances scientifiques et leur utilisation dans la pratique demeure un défi. L’utilisation des technologies de l’information et des communications (TICs) constitue un outil précieux pour réduire cet écart. Afin de relever ce défi, un projet de démonstration misant sur l’utilisation des technologies à des fins d’application des connaissances a été déployé auprès de 23 équipes de soutien dans la communauté de 5 régions du Québec (2016-2018). Plus de 324 professionnels de la santé mentale, chefs d’équipe et gestionnaires ont bénéficié de l’initiative À portée de main, les meilleures pratiques axées vers le rétablissement. Objectif Cet article présente les résultats de l’étude de satisfaction effectuée auprès des chefs d’équipe responsables du soutien clinique dans les équipes de soutien dans la communauté à l’étude. L’objectif de cette étude consiste à enrichir la compréhension d’enjeux colligés en cours d’implantation et d’émettre des recommandations en vue d’une mise à l’échelle pérenne du programme d’application des connaissances mis en oeuvre. Méthode Un devis qualitatif en recherche évaluative a été privilégié. Au terme du processus d’implantation du programme, 2 entrevues de groupe ont été effectuées avec les chefs d’équipe. Une analyse de contenu suivant une approche inductive à 3 niveaux de codification a été réalisée. Résultats Les résultats montrent un décalage numérique important au sein du réseau de la santé et des services sociaux québécois comparativement à d’autres secteurs d’activités. Les participants soulignent l’importance de se doter de mécanismes d’échange et de transfert des connaissances intégrés aux pratiques organisationnelles (temps dédié, supervision clinique formelle, etc.) mettant à contribution les TICs. Abstract

Healthcare systems have become increasingly complex and have faced difficulties in finding solutions to emerging population needs. New technologies have allowed users to obtain the information they need at speed never seen before in human history. This fact has promoted reflection, change, and restructuration in large healthcare corporations' traditional management style, which seeks to incorporate in their business model elements more flexible and interactive in connection with the recent challenges and the current healthcare trends. Promoting a creative and innovative culture in health organizations to allow the stakeholders to find solutions focused on healthcare systems' real needs is one of the most important elements to respond to emergent challenges. However, the development of mechanisms enhances a creative environment, and evaluative approaches that demonstrate the reliability and added value of innovations remain challenging. Therefore, this paper develops and recalls certain essential concepts that can help researchers, managers, and health workers interested in creating (or maintain) a favorable environment for innovation in healthcare organizations. Abstract

Background The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) and the ERIC compilation of implementation strategies are key resources for identifying implementation barriers and strategies. However, their respective density and complexity make their application to implementation planning outside of academia challenging. We developed the CFIR Card Game as a way of working with multi-stakeholder implementation teams that were implementing mental health recovery into their services, to identify barriers and strategies to overcome them. The aim of this descriptive evaluation is to describe how the game was prepared, played, used and received by teams and researchers and their perception of the clarity of the CFIR constructs. Methods We used the new CFIR-ERIC Matching Tool v.1 to design the game. We produced a deck of cards with each of the CFIR-ERIC Matching Tool barrier narratives representing all 39 CFIR constructs. Teams played the game at the pre-implementation stage at a time when they were actively engaged in a planning process for implementing their selected recovery-oriented innovation. The teams placed each card in either the YES or NO column of the board in response to whether they anticipated experiencing this barrier in their setting. Teams were also asked about the clarity of the barrier narratives and were provided with plain language versions if unclear. Researchers completed a reflection form following the game, and participants completed an open-added questionnaire that included questions specific to the CFIR Card Game. We applied a descriptive coding approach to analysis. Results Four descriptive themes emerged from this analysis: (1) the CFIR Card Game as a useful and engaging process, (2) difficulties understanding CFIR construct barrier narratives, (3) strengths of the game’s design and structure and room for improvement and (4) mediating factors: facilitator preparation and multi-stakeholder dynamics.
