Abstract

Ferrimagnetic TbFe or TbFeCo amorphous alloy thin films have been grown by co-evaporation in ultra-high vacuum. They exhibit an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy up to their Curie temperature with a nucleation and propagation reversal mechanism suitable for current induced domain wall motion. Rutherford back scattering experiments confirmed a fine control of the Tb depth-integrated composition within the evaporation process. However, a large set of experimental techniques were used to evidence an interface related contribution in such thin films as compared to much thicker samples. In particular, scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments evidence a depth dependent composition and perturbed top and bottom interfaces with preferential oxidation and diffusion of terbium. Despite of that, amorphous and homogeneous alloy film remains in a bulk-like part. The composition of that bulk-like part of the magnetic layer, labeled as effective composition, is biased when compared with the depth-integrated composition. 6. Soft x-ray optical constants of sputtered chromium thin films with improved accuracy in the L and M absorption edge regions

Abstract

In this study, we determine with improved accuracy the complex index of refraction n = 1 - δ + iβ of sputtered chromium thin films for photon energies ranging from 25 eV to 813 eV. These data include the first absolute measurements of the absorption fine structure near the Cr-L edge. First, we verified by combining Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry and grazing-incidence x-ray reflectometry that the sputtered thin films were pure Cr with a density consistent with tabulated values. Then, we demonstrated that the Cr surface oxide layer remains stable when the samples are exposed to air for up to 4 years. The Cr absorption coefficient β was determined from the transmittance of freestanding Cr thin films with various thicknesses, measured at the ALS synchrotron radiation source. A model is proposed to correct the transmittance data from the spectral contamination of the source. Finally, we used the new β values, combined with theoretical and tabulated data from the literature, in order to calculate the δ values by the Kramers-Kronig relation. The improvement in the accuracy of β values is demonstrated by the f-sum rule. An additional validation of the new Cr optical constants (δ, β) is performed by comparing the simulated and experimental reflectance of a Cr/B4C multilayer mirror near the Cr-L2,3 edge.

Abstract

We study the invariant theory of trilinear forms over a three-dimensional complex vector space, and apply it to investigate the behaviour of pure entangled three-partite qutrit states and their normal forms under local filtering operations (SLOCC). We describe the orbit space of the SLOCC group $SL(3,\C)^{\times 3}$ both in its affine and projective versions in terms of a very symmetric normal form parameterized by three complex numbers. The parameters of the possible normal forms of a given state are roots of an algebraic equation, which is proved to be solvable by radicals. We obtain a complete and minimal set of 170 generators for the algebra of $SL(2,\C)^{\times 4}$-covariants of a binary quadrilinear form. Interpreted in terms of a four qubit system, this describes in particular the algebraic varieties formed by the orbits of local filtering operations in its projective Hilbert space. Abstract

We investigate the effects of oxygen on the thermal diffusion of germanium atoms, implanted inside a thermally grown SiO2 layer, during high temperature processes (1100 °C, 60 min). The impact of the presence of oxygen on Ge diffusion is studied as a function of its origin, as it can come either from the annealing atmosphere (extrinsic source) or from the SiO2 matrix itself (intrinsic source). 18O labeling of the oxygen either in the annealing atmosphere or in the silica substrate, together with an isotopically sensitive ion beam analysis, shows a clear oxygen-dependence in germanium diffusion. This is especially so when oxygen is present in the annealing atmosphere, where it is responsible for an enhancement of germanium out-diffusion and redistribution into several peaks during annealing, through the formation of GeO molecules. A new three-process model is proposed to explain the impact of a contaminated atmosphere on the Ge redistribution. This is notably shown that a third Ge peak arises at the sample surface when the annealing atmosphere is contaminated by oxygen. This peak formation is explained by the oxidation of Ge present at the vicinity of the surface by oxygen coming from the annealing atmosphere. This is also shown that O2 molecules can diffuse in depth, with a coefficient of diffusion D O 2 ∼ 10 − 9 c m 2 / s , until the densities of Ge and irradiation-induced defects increase, causing the progressive oxidation of Ge in depth and the restoration of the SiO2 stoichiometry. 21. Deciphering microbiome impacts on fungal-microalgal interaction in a marine environment using metabolomics

Abstract

The comprehension of microbial interactions is one of the key challenges in microbial ecology. The present study focuses on studying the chemical interaction between the toxic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima PL4V strain and associated fungal strains (two Penicillium sp. strains and three Aspergillus sp) among which the Aspergillus pseudoglaucus strain MMS1589 was selected for further co-culture experiment. Such rarely studied interaction (fungal-microalgal) was explored in axenic and non-axenic conditions, in a dedicated microscale marine environment (hybrid solid/liquid conditions), to delineate specialized metabolome alteration in relation to the P. lima and A. pseudoglaucus co-culture in regard to the presence of their associated bacteria. Such alteration was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). In-depth analysis of the resulting data highlighted (1) the chemical modification associated to fungal-microalgal co-culture, and (2) the impact of associated bacteria in microalgal resilience to fungal interaction. Even if only a very low number of highlighted metabolites were fully characterised due to the poor chemical investigation of the studied species, a clear co-culture induction of the dinoflagellate toxins okadaic acid and dinophysistoxin 1 was observed. Such results highlight the importance to consider microalgal microbiome to study parameters regulating toxin production. Finally, a microscopic observation showed an unusual physical interaction between the fungal mycelium and the dinoflagellates.

22. Molecular simulation of the water-triolein-oleic acid mixture: Local structure and thermodynamic properties.

Abstract

An artificial oil-in-water emulsion analogous to those found in bioresources or food matrices is simulated and studied experimentally. It is composed of one of the major natural free fatty acids (the oleic acid, OA) and the corresponding triacylglyceride (trioleic glyceride, or triolein, GTO). Because of the large time and length scales involved, the molecular simulations are done with the Martini force field, a coarse-grained model. This allowed us to study the water–OA–GTO system at different compositions with more than 20 000 molecules and up to 2 μs. Interfacial tension was measured using the pendant drop method and compared with molecular simulation results. We observe very good agreement at high OA concentrations and deviations up to 15% at low OA concentrations. The water solubility in the lipid phase is in fair agreement with experiments, between 0.03 and 0.32 mol/l, rising with the OA content. The area occupied by OA and GTO at the interface between water and the pure product fitted with experimental data (AOA = 36.6 Å2 and AGTO = 152.1 Å2). The consistency between simulation and experimental results allowed a structural analysis of the interface. A bilayer structure of the lipids at the water/oil interface is proposed, containing preferentially oleic acid but also triolein. Through all these results, the usefulness of coarse-grained simulation for the description of water–oil interfacial organization is demonstrated. This method will be used later to bring local information on the organization of target compounds, necessary in biomass fractionation processes or food additive formulations, for example. Abstract

Host-microbe interactions play crucial roles in marine ecosystems. However, we still have very little understanding of the mechanisms that govern these relationships, the evolutionary processes that shape them, and their ecological consequences. The holobiont concept is a renewed paradigm in biology that can help to describe and understand these complex systems. It posits that a host and its associated microbiota with which it interacts, form a holobiont, and have to be studied together as a coherent biological and functional unit to understand its biology, ecology, and evolution. Here we discuss critical concepts and opportunities in marine holobiont research and identify key challenges in the field. We highlight the potential economic, sociological, and environmental impacts of the holobiont concept in marine biological, evolutionary, and environmental sciences. Given the connectivity and the unexplored biodiversity specific to marine ecosystems, a deeper understanding of such complex systems requires further technological and conceptual advances, e.g., the development of controlled experimental model systems for holobionts from all major lineages and the modeling of (info)chemical-mediated interactions between organisms. Here we propose that one significant challenge is to bridge cross-disciplinary research on tractable model systems in order to address key ecological and evolutionary questions. This first step is crucial to decipher the main drivers of the dynamics and evolution of holobionts and to account for the holobiont concept in applied areas, such as the conservation, management, and exploitation of marine ecosystems and resources, where practical solutions to predict and mitigate the impact of human activities are more important than ever.

Abstract

The cross-sections of deuteron-induced nuclear reactions suitable for ion beam analysis, measured in different laboratories, are often significantly different. In the present work, differential cross-sections of 27Al(d,p) and 27Al(d,α) reactions were measured, and the cross sections benchmarked with thick target spectra obtained from pure aluminium for the first time in two independent laboratories. The 27Al(d,p) and (d,α) differential cross-sections were measured between 1.4 and 2 MeV at scattering angles of 165°, 150°, and 135° in the VDGT laboratory in Tehran (Iran), and the same measurements for detector angle of 150° were repeated from scratch, including target making, with independent equipment on the SAFIR platform at INSP in Paris (France). The results of these two measurements at 150° are in good agreement, and for the first time a fitted function is proposed to describe the Al-cross sections for which no suitable theoretical expression exists. The obtained differential cross-sections were validated through benchmarking, by fitting with SIMNRA deuteron-induced particle spectra obtained from a high purity bulk Al target at both labs for deuteron incident energies between 1.6 and 2 MeV. The thick target spectra are well-reproduced. The evaluated and benchmarked cross sections have been uploaded to the ion beam analysis nuclear data library database (www-nds.iaea.org/ibandl/). Abstract

Several Microcystis aeruginosa populations blooming in different freshwater ecosystems located in the same geographical area were examined to study the variations in microcystin (MC) concentrations during cyanobacterial blooms. The findings indicated that the toxic risks during cyanobacterial proliferations are due to variations in both the proportion of MC-producing cells and the production of MC by the toxic cells.

Abstract

Positrons, positive muons and deuterons were used – when applicable – to probe the production and thermal stability of defects at room temperature either by electron irradiation or He-ion implantation in zirconia stabilized by yttria in the cubic phase. change in the positron lifetime or in the muon spin relaxation occurs after electron irradiation, indicating a positron saturation trapping the annealed state, owing to the presence of structural defects inherent to phase stabilization. In contrast, after helium implantation, even at low fluence (~10^14 cm^-2), slow positron implantation spectroscopy reveals the presence of a new type of defect (being trapping effective than the native ones), whereas neither positronium nor muonium are detected. The diffusion of helium was followed after 3He-ion implantation and subsequent annealing using the 3He(d,p)4He nuclear reaction. A two-Gaussian distribution fit indicates a part of the helium atoms is trapped at the projection range location, most likely in gas bubbles, while the other part diffuses gasses after heat treatment already at around 1/5 of the melting temperature. In spite of differences in depths and concentrations by the present techniques, a fairly good correlation is observed between the various results.

Abstract

Cet document se présente comme la continuité de l'étude réalisée par F. Colson et D. Désarménien en 1991 "L'évaluation de l'impact d'une procédure d'aide aux agriculteurs en difficulté". Il présente deux objectifs : l'analyse des effets de l'aide et l'élaboration d'une méthode d'observation des trajectoires. C'est donc une évaluation de politique publique ex post, cinq ans après l'attribution de l'aide, réalisée sur un échantillon constant constitué à partir du Réseau d'information comptable agricole (RICA) : 575 agriculteurs en Bretagne et Pays-de-la-Loire. Ainsi, la finalité de ce rapport est en premier lieu d'aboutir à une réflexion critique sur la pertinence d'une aide (formes, montants...) et plus largement sur la procédure d'aide (cohérence des critères d'attribution, des modalités d'attribution...) En deuxième lieu, il s'agit d'essayer de proposer aux organismes chargés du conseil aux agriculteurs des outils pratiques pour réaliser le suivi de trajectoires.
