BackgroundChronic disease management is a major health issue worldwide. With the paradigm shift to preventive medicine, disease prediction modeling using machine learning is gaining importance for precise and accurate medical judgement. ObjectiveThis study aimed to develop high-performance prediction models for 4 chronic diseases using the common data model (CDM) and machine learning and to confirm the possibility for the extension of the proposed models. MethodsIn this study, 4 major chronic diseases—namely, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease—were selected, and a model for predicting their occurrence within 10 years was developed. For model development, the Atlas analysis tool was used to define the chronic disease to be predicted, and data were extracted from the CDM according to the defined conditions. A model for predicting each disease was built with 4 algorithms verified in previous studies, and the performance was compared after applying a grid search. ResultsFor the prediction of each disease, we applied 4 algorithms (logistic regression, gradient boosting, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting), and all models show greater than 80% accuracy. As compared to the optimized model’s performance, extreme gradient boosting presented the highest predictive performance for the 4 diseases (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and cardiovascular disease) with 80% or greater and from 0.84 to 0.93 in area under the curve standards. ConclusionsThis study demonstrates the possibility for the preemptive management of chronic diseases by predicting the occurrence of chronic diseases using the CDM and machine learning. With these models, the risk of developing major chronic diseases within 10 years can be demonstrated by identifying health risk factors using our chronic disease prediction machine learning model developed with the real-world data–based CDM and National Health Insurance Corporation examination data that individuals can easily obtain.

Gene regulatory network inference is essential to uncover complex relationships among gene pathways and inform downstream experiments, ultimately enabling regulatory network re-engineering. Network inference from transcriptional time-series data requires accurate, interpretable, and efficient determination of causal relationships among thousands of genes. Here, we develop Bootstrap Elastic net regression from Time Series (BETS), a statistical framework based on Granger causality for the recovery of a directed gene network from transcriptional time-series data. BETS uses elastic net regression and stability selection from bootstrapped samples to infer causal relationships among genes. BETS is highly parallelized, enabling efficient analysis of large transcriptional data sets. We show competitive accuracy on a community benchmark, the DREAM4 100-gene network inference challenge, where BETS is one of the fastest among methods of similar performance and additionally infers whether causal effects are activating or inhibitory. We apply BETS to transcriptional time-series data of differentially-expressed genes from A549 cells exposed to glucocorticoids over a period of 12 hours. We identify a network of 2768 genes and 31,945 directed edges (FDR ≤ 0.2). We validate inferred causal network edges using two external data sources: Overexpression experiments on the same glucocorticoid system, and genetic variants associated with inferred edges in primary lung tissue in the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) v6 project. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and serine protease TMPRSS2 have been implicated in cell entry for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The expression of ACE2 and TMPRSS2 in the lung epithelium might have implications for the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severity of COVID-19. We use human genetic variants that proxy angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor drug effects and cardiovascular risk factors to investigate whether these exposures affect lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 gene expression and circulating ACE2 levels. We observed no consistent evidence of an association of genetically predicted serum ACE levels with any of our outcomes. There was weak evidence for an association of genetically predicted serum ACE levels with ACE2 gene expression in the Lung eQTL Consortium (p = 0.014), but this finding did not replicate. There was evidence of a positive association of genetic liability to type 2 diabetes mellitus with lung ACE2 gene expression in the Gene-Tissue Expression (GTEx) study (p = 4 × 10−4) and with circulating plasma ACE2 levels in the INTERVAL study (p = 0.03), but not with lung ACE2 expression in the Lung eQTL Consortium study (p = 0.68). There were no associations of genetically proxied liability to the other cardiometabolic traits with any outcome. This study does not provide consistent evidence to support an effect of serum ACE levels (as a proxy for ACE inhibitors) or cardiometabolic risk factors on lung ACE2 and TMPRSS2 expression or plasma ACE2 levels.

Ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials exhibit high strengths due to grain boundary strengthening, but grains can grow rapidly if post heat treatment is required, making it challenging to achieve grain boundary and precipitation strengthening simultaneously. Grain growth stagnation at 525 °C (0.87 Tm, melting point) was observed in a Mg-4Y-3RE alloy fabricated by additive friction stir deposition (AFSD), a novel solid-state additive manufacturing technology. The AFSD processing produced a UFG microstructure and two major second phases, Mg41RE5 and nanoparticles containing Y and O. After solid solution treatment (SST) at 525 °C for 72 h, no noticeable grain growth occurred. While Mg41RE5 particles dissolved into the matrix within 4 h of SST, the nanoparticles remained stable and unaltered. The observed grain growth stagnation is attributed to Zener pinning by these thermally stable nanoparticles. These new findings offer a novel approach to designing UFG materials with exceptional thermal stability for high-temperature applications.

Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia encountered in acute and critical illness and is associated with poor short and long-term outcomes. Given the consequences of developing AF, research into prevention, prediction and treatment of this arrhythmia in the critically ill are of great potential benefit, however, study of AF in critically ill patients faces unique challenges, leading to a sparse evidence base to guide management in this population. Major obstacles to the study of AF in acute and critical illness include absence of a common definition, challenges in designing studies that capture complex etiology and assess causality, lack of a clear outcome set, difficulites in recruitment in acute environments with respect to timing, consent, and workflow, and failure to embed studies into clinical care platforms and capitalize on emerging technologies. Collaborative effort by researchers, clinicians, and stakeholders should be undertaken to address these challenges, both through interdisciplinary cooperation for the optimization of research efficiency and advocacy to advance the understanding of this common and complex arrhythmia, resulting in improved patient care and outcomes. The Symposium on Atrial Fibrillation in Acute and Critical Care was convened to address some of these challenges and propose potential solutions.

La producción científica por parte de docentes de educación superior es una tarea necesaria pero que muchas veces puede llevar al desarrollo de malas conductas como es el caso del plagio, por ello, se puede aplicar con la conformación de un comité de investigación y ética, lugar en donde se asesora, gestiona, orienta, apoya e instruye a los investigadores en el perfeccionamiento del documento, envió a revista científica y seguimiento de las sugerencias u aportes de los evaluadores en caso de tenerlo. Del mismo modo, se sugiere la realización de jornadas de capacitación y concientización sobre buenas prácticas de investigación en los diferentes institutos, centros de estudio, universidades y sociedades científicas con el propósito de minimizar estás conductas que ponen en riesgo la credibilidad, legibilidad y confianza de la comunidad sobre la investigación clínica.

La revisión de los estudios presentados subraya la importancia de abordar no solo los aspectos físicos de la carga laboral, sino también los factores psicosociales y el papel de la actividad física en la prevención y mitigación de los trastornos musculoesqueléticos. De esta manera, es crucial que las organizaciones y autoridades competentes prioricen la implementación de políticas integrales y enfoques preventivos que consideren la ergonomía, la gestión del estrés y la promoción de un estilo de vida saludable en el lugar de trabajo. Hacerlo contribuirá no solo a mejorar el bienestar de los trabajadores, sino también a reducir la incidencia de trastornos relacionados con el trabajo, y, así fortalecer el compromiso laboral.

Seeds of four native species of trees and shrubs (Larrea cuneifolia, Bulnesia retama, Plectrocarpa tetracantha and Prosopis flexuosa) were exposed to soil contaminated with As, Cu, Cd, and Zn from an abandoned gold mine to identify adaptation strategies. Several physiological, morpho-anatomical, and biochemical parameters were determined. The seed germination of L. cuneifolia, B. retama, and P. tetracantha was fully inhibited in 100 % contaminated soil. Toxicological endpoints as NOEC, LOEC and IC50 ranged from 10 % to 25 % of soil contaminated with mining waste. Radicle elongation was the most sensitive variable to high metal(loid) concentrations, except for L. cuneifolia that hypocotyl elongation was the most affected parameter. P. flexuosa was selected to evaluate biochemical biomarkers and morpho-anatomical parameters. It showed an increase in radicle diameter and central radicle cylinder. A concentration-dependent increase in the O2·- production was observed in radicle and cotyledon. A peak of the enzymatic activity of guaiacol peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase and catalase enzymes in P. flexuosa seedlings showed a negative relationship between metal(loid) concentration and exposure time. After a drop in the enzymatic activity, an increase in the malondialdehyde content (lipid peroxidation) was observed. The tested native species could be useful for phytoremediation of soils with a very high degree of metal contamination. A further investigation should focus on strategies to improve soil physicochemical characteristics for plant survival at highest contamination levels.

Este estudio analiza el comportamiento sísmico de edificios esquineros de hormigón armado de mediana altura (4 pisos) en Portoviejo, Ecuador, y propone un método de reforzamiento que combina pórticos de acero con diagonales excéntricas y enchapado de mampostería. Mediante un levantamiento in situ, se identificaron las características geométricas y arquitectónicas típicas de estas edificaciones, y se desarrolló un modelo estructural representativo al que se aplicaron cinco enfoques de modelación para evaluar su respuesta sísmica. Los resultados demuestran que la inclusión de la mampostería en los cálculos estructurales modifica significativamente la rigidez del sistema. El mecanismo de reforzamiento propuesto mejora la distribución de rigideces, mitiga los efectos de torsión y reduce la demanda de acero en elementos de hormigón, incrementando la seguridad y estabilidad de las edificaciones. Aunque el enfoque cumple con los límites normativos establecidos y presenta una solución eficaz para mejorar la resistencia y rigidez lateral de las estructuras, es esencial evaluar la proporción óptima entre la cantidad de muros reforzados y el aporte de las diagonales de acero. Además, se recomienda realizar comprobaciones mediante análisis no lineales para determinar el impacto de emplear dos sistemas estructurales en la respuesta estructural y prevenir posibles problemas en el comportamiento inelástico.

Category: Midfoot/Forefoot; Sports Introduction/Purpose: Turf toe, a plantar plate injury of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, commonly occurs in athletes participating in outdoor cutting sports. To the knowledge of the authors, this study reports on clinical and return to sport outcomes after surgical repair of turf toe for the largest cohort of patients presenting with a Grade III turf toe injury. The purpose of this study is to identify risk factors for turf toe and analyze foot function after turf toe injury and surgical repair. This study reports on clinical outcomes and return to sport for athletic patients treated for a turf toe injury at our institution. We hypothesize that patients will have significant improvement in pre- to postoperative clinical outcomes and quickly return to sport after surgical repair. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study conducted from the institutional review board-approved Foot and Ankle Registry data, and the protocol was approved by the steering committee at the investigators’ institution. Inclusion criteria included athletes of at least high school level competition who underwent plantar plate repair at the first metatarsophalangeal joint between 2016 to 2023 by 3 fellowship-trained foot and ankle orthopedic surgeons. Excluded were patients with histories of ipsilateral forefoot surgeries, rheumatoid arthritis, or gout. Twenty-eight patients were identified. Patient-reported outcomes via PROMIS scores were collected preoperatively and at least one year postoperatively for all patients. Return to sport surveys were distributed to patients at least one year postoperatively. Results: The average time from surgery to final follow-up was 2.8 (range, 1-5.3) years. PROMIS scores were found to significantly improve for Physical Function, Pain Interference, Pain Intensity, and Global Physical Health domains. 21 return to sport surveys were completed from the patient cohort. 19 out of 21 (90.5%) of patients were able to return to pre-injury levels of physical competition with an average time to return to sport was 20.35 (range, 12-32) weeks. Conclusion: This study compared short- to medium-term patient-reported clinical outcomes and return to sport data for athletes after a Grade III turf toe injury and surgical repair. Patients demonstrated significant improvement in patient-reported outcomes and were able to return to sport approximately five months after surgery.

Abstract Occipital nerve decompression is effective in reducing headache symptoms in select patients with migraine and occipital neuralgia. Eligibility for surgery relies on subjective symptoms and responses to nerve blocks and Onabotulinum toxin A (Botox) injections. No validated objective method exists for detecting occipital headache pathologies. The purpose of the study is to explore the potential of high-resolution Magnetic Resolution Imaging (MRI) in identifying greater occipital nerve (GON) pathologies in chronic headache patients. The MRI protocol included three sequences targeting fat-suppressed fluid-sensitive T2-weighted signals. Visualization of the GON involved generating 2-D image slices with sequential rotation to track the nerve course. Twelve patients underwent pre-surgical MRI assessment. MRI identified four main pathologies that were validated against intra-operative examination: GON entanglement by the occipital artery, increased nerve thickness and hyperintensity suggesting inflammation compared to the non-symptomatic contralateral side, early GON branching with rejoining at a distal point, and a connection between the GON and the lesser occipital nerve. MRI possesses the ability to visualize the GON and identify suspected trigger points associated with headache symptoms. This case series highlights MRI's potential to provide objective evidence of nerve pathology. Further research is warranted to establish MRI as a gold standard for diagnosing extracranial contributors in headaches.

Background: The burden of chronic viral hepatitis among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH) and its association with liver disease in Nigeria has been seldom explored. Our objective was to compare characteristics in PLWH with and without significant liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, examining its association with viral hepatitis and other risk factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study among PLWH with and without significant fibrosis/cirrhosis (transient elastography ≥ 9.3 kPa) between July 2018 and August 2022. Data were compared between participant groups and logistic regression used to determine association between chronic viral hepatitis and significant fibrosis/cirrhosis. Results: Five hundred and thirty-seven participants (34.3% male), median age 46 years, 22.2% with significant fibrosis/cirrhosis were analyzed. Seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) was 11.2% and hepatitis C virus (HCV) 5.7%. Male sex, diabetes, HBV, and HCV were associated with significant fibrosis/cirrhosis, while ART for >5 years was associated with reduced risk. Conclusion: The chronic hepatitis viruses are associated with significant liver fibrosis/cirrhosis in PLWH in Nigeria, highlighting the importance of viral hepatitis awareness, screening, and treatment in HIV programs to reduce the risk of liver disease. Non-point source pollution and water eutrophication from agricultural runoff present global challenges that impact ground and surface waters. The search for a feasible and sustainable mitigation strategy to combat this issue remains ongoing. This scoping review aims to explore one potential solution by examining relevant literature on agricultural practices of the past and recent edge-of-field measures, designed to ameliorate the impacts of agricultural runoff on soil and water quality. The study focuses on integrating findings from diverse research fields into a novel myco-phytoremediation approach, which involves the synergistic relationship of plants, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and plant beneficial bacteria within vegetative buffer strips. The implementation of these augmented buffer strips enhances nutrient retention in the soil, reduces runoff volume, promotes biodiversity, and increases plant biomass. This biomass can be converted into biochar, an effective sorbent that can be used to filter dissolved and particulate nutrients from surface waterways. The resulting nutrient-rich biochar can be repurposed as a form of bio-fertiliser, optimizing fertiliser consumption and subsequently reducing the depletion rate of phosphorus, a limited resource. This paper investigates a circular model of abatement of agricultural runoff via maximal nutrient retention and subsequent recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus back into the agricultural system. The key impact lies in its contribution to addressing the issue of non-point source pollution and eutrophication by encouraging multidisciplinary research aimed at solving these complex environmental issues.

Abstract GSK2838232 (GSK8232) is a second-generation maturation inhibitor (MI) developed for the treatment of HIV with excellent broad-spectrum virological profiles. The compound has demonstrated promising clinical results as an orally administered agent. Additionally, the compound’s physical and pharmacological properties present opportunities for exploitation as long-acting parenteral formulations. Despite unique design constraints including solubility and dose of GSK8232, we report on three effective tunable drug delivery strategies: active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) suspensions, ionic liquids, and subdermal implants. Promising sustained drug release profiles were achieved in rats with each approach. Additionally, we were able to tune drug release rates through a combination of passive and active strategies, broadening applicability of these formulation approaches beyond GSK8232. Taken together, this report is an important first step to advance long-acting formulation development for critical HIV medicines that do not fit the traditional profile of suitable long-acting candidates.

To characterize the naturalized population of burr medic (Medicago polymorpha L.), a valuable pasture legume, in subtropical Queensland, Australia, a collection of 1747 lines from 107 sites in 11 regions was grown, and 26 phenotypic and agronomic attributes were recorded. This data matrix was analyzed by cluster, principal co-ordinates, discriminant and correlation analyses to examine line relationships based on plant attributes and their association with site characteristics of climate and soil. Among the wide polymorphism of attributes across the collection zone, there were a number of notable phenotypic associations. One of these, with large green leaves, minimally dentate leaf margins, and light purple petioles, was widely distributed. Three others, one with a distinctive magenta leaf mark, dark purple petioles, and an upright habit; one with those same attributes but with a prostrate habit; and one with grey-green leaves, high frost resistance, and the ability to stay green and to produce high pod yields, were associated with climatic and soil characteristics in the north, east, and south of the collection zone, respectively. Days to flowering were longer in lines from saline soils at lower altitude, and plant vigor was greatest in lines from more fertile soils with higher rainfall. A wide variation in time to flower of lines at all collection sites contributes to the adaptation of M. polymorpha in subtropical Queensland and potentially to its persistence with future climate change.

BackgroundLittle is known about recovery from opioid use disorder (OUD) or outcomes of detoxification and drug-free treatment of chronic opioid therapy (COT). Harm reduction with medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is regarded as the only legitimate treatment.MethodsThe Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved reporting deidentified outcomes. Patients seen over a 10-year period whose records suggested recovery were called and interviewed.ResultsOverall, 69/86 (80%) confirmed that they had been sober for at least a year, including 41 patients with OUD (75%) and 28 COT patients (90%). 91% were drug-free, and 9% were on MOUD. 79% preferred a psychotherapy approach. 21% preferred MOUD. Coming for more treatment and abstinence from tobacco were significantly correlated with recovery.ConclusionThis is the first report that we are aware of regarding the frequency of recovery from OUD and COT. We have complicated the discussion about what is the best treatment for patients with OUD and patients on COT. Advising that maintenance is the only legitimate treatment for patients who suffer from OUD or who are on COT seems both premature and jeopardizes the ability of treaters to individualize treatment recommendations.

It is estimated that there are 30 million gardeners in Britain, who could play a crucial role in being the ‘first contact’ for reporting ornamental plants in gardens with invasive potential. Invasive species are one of the five drivers of the global nature crisis, many of which were originally introduced through ornamental horticulture. Ornamentals confined to gardens and those which have already naturalised, but are not yet shown to be invasive, represent a ‘pool’ of species with invasive potential – ‘future invaders’. An online survey asking gardeners to report ornamentals they had noticed invading or taking over their garden resulted in 251 different taxa being reported (including cultivars). The future invaders were prioritised with a simple yet structured scheme, looking at the domestic and global naturalised and invasive status of each taxon, including in the Global Register of Introduced and Invasive Species (GRIIS) and the Global Naturalized Alien Flora (GloNAF) databases. The structured scheme identified a shortlist of nine ornamentals of concern which should be prioritised for further analysis, such as a formal risk assessment. Identifying and preventing future invaders before they escape gardens is critical, to prevent future threats to nature. There is also a gap in the identification of potentially invasive ornamentals, which are not currently invasive, yet are beyond the scope of formal horizon scanning because they are naturalised. Here we explore whether surveying gardeners can be a suitable approach to prioritising future invaders while also being an opportunity to increase awareness of invasive species. This positive feedback loop between gardeners and invasion scientists could help reduce the risk of future invaders.

Abstract The naked mole rat (NMR), Heterocephalus glaber, the longest-living rodent, provides a unique opportunity to explore how evolution has shaped adult stem cell (ASC) activity and tissue function with increasing lifespan. Using cumulative BrdU labelling and a quantitative imaging approach to track intestinal ASCs (Lgr5 + ) in their native in vivo state, we find an expanded pool of Lgr5 + cells in NMRs, and these cells specifically at the crypt base (Lgr5 +CBC ) exhibit slower division rates compared to those in short-lived mice but have a similar turnover as human LGR5 +CBC cells. Instead of entering quiescence (G0), NMR Lgr5 +CBC cells reduce their division rates by prolonging arrest in the G1 and/or G2 phases of the cell cycle. Moreover, we also observe a higher proportion of differentiated cells in NMRs that confer enhanced protection and function to the intestinal mucosa which is able to detect any chemical imbalance in the luminal environment efficiently, triggering a robust pro-apoptotic, anti-proliferative response within the stem/progenitor cell zone.

Purpose: The paper’s main objective is to structure the knowledge of the existing regulatory frameworks, projects and actions that support sustainable performance management (SPM) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) against the backdrop of the growing significance of the circular economy. The paper will also evidence how strategic management accounting (SMA) assists this process, what individual metrics, dashboards or scorecard concepts have been proposed and how their use may be assessed. Methodology/approach: The research methods include (1) a descriptive systematic analysis of the policies established by the policymakers and regulators in the EU, (2) a comparative analysis of various organisations’ initiatives, actions, delivered toolkits and their outputs, and (3) a literature review of the essential works and research studies on sustainable business models (SBMs), circular business models (CBMs) and SPM in the context of SMEs. Findings: The policies established in the EU support SPM by encouraging SMEs to be involved in sustainable business practices and indicating how to embark on a green transition. Recently, multiple initiatives have been aimed at indicating the opportunities the closed-loop economy system offers SMEs. Many toolkits have also been developed to help SMEs measure their sustainable performance. Although this measurement is vital for SMEs, the business practice falls behind the regulatory framework. Therefore, internal initiatives from the SME sector are needed to popularise the sustainability concept. Research limitations/implications: SMEs show lower levels of compliance with environmental requirements and are unaware of how their activities affect the environment. A limitation of the research is that, in many cases, SMEs are not ready to respond properly to the ESG requirements imposed by regulators. The reason may be a lack of knowledge, experience and limited funds. Therefore, future research should focus on recognizing the gaps in this area and identifying what may be impeding the development of sustainability performance management in SMEs. Originality/value: The work presents the evolution path from the traditional business models (TBMs) through the SBMs to innovative CBMs and addresses their distinctive features. It contributes to the existing knowledge about SMA in SMEs by analysing its links with SPM.

Foundation: excess body fat is marked by a permanent imbalance between food consumption and energy expenditure of human beings that generate various health risks, including increased blood pressure. Objective: determine the relationship between the percentage of body fat and blood pressure in adults from rural and urban areas of the municipality of Carmen de Chucurí, Colombia. Method: a descriptive and correlational study with a quantitative approach was carried out on a randomly chosen sample, composed of 406 subjects for the inhabitants of the rural sector and 409 of the urban sector between 18 and 40 years of age from the Carmen Chucurí municipality. Body mass was evaluated, with the use of the tool called electrical impedance and the OMRON HBF-514C brand equipment, and blood pressure and the OMRON HEM-4030 digital blood pressure monitor was used. Results: the main finding of this research was the positive and significant association between the percentage of body fat and diastolic blood pressure in rural men and women in the Carmen de Chucurí municipality. Conclusions: the percentage of body fat is positively and significantly associated with diastolic blood pressure in rural men and women of the Carmen de Chucuri municipality; for the other parameters analyzed, a significant correlation was not evident.

Foundation: motor coordination has been and will be one of the most important components in the physical education area, since it allows synchronizing and coordinating the muscles movements and extremities of the body, in order to enable the performance of various activities.Objective: to determine the motor coordination level differentiated by age and sex in schoolchildren.Methods: research carried out at the Mariano Ospina Rodríguez Educational Institution, which included schoolchildren from six to eleven years of age, to whom the 3JS test was applied, which consists of seven tests battery to determine the motor coordination level in children. Results: there were very significant differences when comparing the children motor coordination regarding all the age ranges studied (6-7 years vs 8-9 years; 6-7 years vs 10-11 years; 8-9 years vs 10 -11 years) (pConclusions: the results allow us to infer that it is important to evaluate and develop activities according to the child maturation stage to determine more specific jobs for girls, since in this work and in many studies carried out, a significant difference was identified in terms of their motor development.

La versatilidad y la mínima necesidad de equipamiento del HIFT lo hacen ideal para entornos laborales en los que puede implementarse sin interrupciones significativas en la rutina diaria. Por lo tanto, se concluye que, hasta la fecha, no se han realizado estudios para evaluar los efectos del HIFT sobre los marcadores de salud o la aptitud física en la población laboral administrativa, lo que representa una importante oportunidad para la investigación y la acción preventiva en este ámbito.

Locus coeruleus (LC) projections to the hippocampus play a critical role in learning and memory. However, the precise timing of LC-hippocampus communication during learning and which LC-derived neurotransmitters are important for memory formation in the hippocampus are currently unknown. Although the LC is typically thought to modulate neural activity via the release of norepinephrine, several recent studies have suggested that it may also release dopamine into the hippocampus and other cortical regions. In some cases, it appears that dopamine release from LC into the hippocampus may be more important for memory than norepinephrine. Here, we extend these data by characterizing the phasic responses of the LC and its projections to the dorsal hippocampus during trace fear conditioning in mice. We find that the LC and its projections to the hippocampus respond to task-relevant stimuli and that amplifying these responses with optogenetic stimulation can enhance long-term memory formation. We also demonstrate that LC activity increases both norepinephrine and dopamine content in the dorsal hippocampus and that the timing of hippocampal dopamine release during trace fear conditioning is similar to the timing of LC activity. Finally, we show that hippocampal dopamine is important for trace fear memory formation, while norepinephrine is not.

The increase in obesity in the world demands a strategic plan aimed at its prevention in the immediate, medium and long term, given that children who present with obesity from an early age tend to maintain this state in subsequent periods of their lives, which leads to acquiring other so-called non-communicable diseases. Advanced studies have identified strategies based on the development of technological proposals that contribute to the promotion of physical activity through active games for children. These proposals constitute postmodern alternatives that motivate a change in sedentary behaviors to consolidate healthy lifestyle habits. It is necessary to implement programs aimed at preventing obesity in pediatric ages, mediated by active video games as educational alternatives that promote the reduction of periods of sedentary lifestyle and the control of chronic non-communicable diseases.

Foundation: the recovery heart rate in physical efforts is a relevant indicator for health and sports professionals.Objective: to relate the acute recovery of the heart rate in a submaximal functional fitness session with the maximum oxygen consumption in physically active subjects.Methods: descriptive study with a quantitative approach with a convenience sample made up of 14 men (age 21.32±4.36 years; body mass 71.42±14.68 kg; height 1.75±0.17 m; BMI 23 01±3.61 kg/m2) and 5 women (age 22.81±3.48 years; body mass 65.82±8.45 kg; height 1.56±0.21 m; BMI 21.54± 1.35 kg/m2), they performed a maximal and incremental cardiorespiratory test (Course-Navette) and the WOD Pukie (150 burpees in the shortest possible time) on two days separated by 48 hours. Maximum heart rate, session heart rate, and recovery heart rate (1, 2, and 3 minutes) were recorded. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the Pearson correlation coefficient (95% confidence and a p-value of 0.05) were applied.Results: the maximum oxygen consumption was not significantly related in men (p>0.05), in the case of women it was positive with the recovery heart rate in all periods, but with significance in 1 minute (r = 0 .81; pConclusions: maximal oxygen consumption was positively and significantly related to recovery heart rate in a functional fitness session in physically active women.

Objetivo. Estudiar la relación entre la fuerza de dos ejercicios específicos de balonmano (test del martillo y test de un paso) y la velocidad de lanzamiento en apoyo. Métodos. Trece jugadores españoles de balonmano de élite fueron evaluados (28.77 ± 4.81 años, 90.19 ± 13.07 kg y 1.86 ± 0.10 m) durante la pretemporada. Se realizó un día de familiarización con los test de lanzamiento y de fuerza con Dinamometría Electromecánica Funcional (DEMF). Una semana después, se realizaron las evaluaciones de fuerza específica de tren superior e inferior (test del martillo y test de un paso) y de velocidad de lanzamiento. Resultados. Se encontraron (i) relaciones significativas entre la velocidad máxima de lanzamiento y la fuerza isométrica media del ejercicio de martillo unilateral con el brazo dominante (r = 0.548, p = 0.05), y (ii) relaciones significativas entre la velocidad máxima de lanzamiento y el paso con la pierna dominante (r = 0.628, p = 0.02). Conclusión. El entrenamiento con situaciones cercanas a las condiciones reales del juego se relaciona positivamente en el proceso de mejora del rendimiento del jugador de balonmano. Por lo tanto, utilizar dispositivos que permitan evaluar y entrenar a la vez en situaciones específicas es algo que debería extenderse entre los profesionales del deporte.

Abstract Human genetics has validated de-repression of fetal gamma globin (HBG) in adult erythroblasts as a powerful therapeutic paradigm in diseases involving defective adult beta globin (HBB)1. To identify factors involved in the switch from HBG to HBB expression, we performed Assay for Transposase Accessible Chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq)2 on sorted erythroid lineage cells derived from bone marrow (BM) or cord blood (CB), representing adult and fetal states, respectively. BM to CB cell ATAC-seq profile comparisons revealed genome-wide enrichment of NFI DNA binding motifs and increased NFIX promoter chromatin accessibility, suggesting that NFIX may repress HBG. NFIX knockdown in BM cells increased HBG mRNA and fetal hemoglobin (HbF) protein levels, coincident with increased chromatin accessibility and decreased DNA methylation at the HBG promoter. Conversely, overexpression of NFIX in CB cells reduced HbF levels. Identification and validation of NFIX as a new target for HbF activation has implications in the development of therapeutics for hemoglobinopathies.

In a period of growing support as well as hostility toward, diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the United States, we developed two college-level DEI minors. We grounded each minor in critical pedagogy, a broad theoretical and philosophical perspective on the purpose and process of education that encapsulates a variety of practices and methods. The goal was to move beyond performative DEI by collaborating with students to develop the necessary tools to become engaged and self-managed citizens both nationally and globally. As such, we embedded dialogue, self-reflection, diverse knowledge networks and sources, and critical frameworks into the minors, as we sought to balance developing critical awareness with working toward change. In the following paper, we describe these basic elements of critical pedagogy to transformative DEI and link them to the processes of constructing and ultimately delivering the minors. Key examples are provided to demonstrate the implementation of these elements in our work. We conclude with our reflections on how this experience may inform similar efforts.

El COVID largo es una patología multiorgánica con secuelas importantes que afectan la salud y bienestar de los sobrevivientes desde la bioenergética celular, en este caso, se abordó la importancia de considerar el equilibro acido-base dentro de los procesos de evaluación y tratamiento del COVID largo por parte de los profesionales de la salud y el deporte, dado a que, diferentes investigaciones han encontrado modificaciones importantes en la función mitocondrial que se traducen en fallas de la ventilación, esto provocando alteraciones de la compensación-descompensación del control respiratorio y renal del pH (acidosis y alcalosis metabólico-respiratorias).

Diseño de dietas en profesionales del ejercicio físico y sus riesgos para la salud

El análisis no lineal estático, denominado Pushover, consiste en la aplicación de fuerzas laterales incrementales a una estructura para visualizar su probable desempeño ante acciones sísmicas, esto es importante en países como Ecuador donde se tiene una alta sismicidad. En este artículo, se describen las nuevas funciones de CEINCI LAB para el análisis Pushover de pórticos de acero. El Sistema Computacional CEINCI LAB es una colección de funciones para el análisis sísmico-estructural. Desde el año 2019, se han desarrollado funciones para facilitar el ingreso de datos y la presentación de resultados en los análisis no lineales de estructuras empleando OpenSees. Nuestra motivación es presentar nuevas funciones que permitan obtener animaciones del análisis y apreciar el nivel de daño en los elementos estructurales mediante un código de colores, facilitando la interpretación de los resultados. Además, mediante estas funciones se genera un archivo editable con la información del modelo estructural, tipo de análisis, resultados y otros parámetros de interés que pueden ser modificados bajo demanda.
