Helix entodonta L. Pfeiffer, 1859 is moved to Zilchistrophia Weyrauch, 1960 based on its small size and the presence of three palatal plicae. This has implications on the diagnosis of Systrophia L. Pfeiffer, 1855, as now none of the known species have palatal plicae inside the shell. That Systrophia does not have this type of plicae supports that Entodina Ancey, 1887 should be regarded as a separate, valid genus within the Scolodontidae.

Recently a number of previously unrecognised type specimens representing 8 taxa were found in the general collection of the Natural History Museum, belonging to the Orthalicoidea. We have documented this material in this publication, as a supplement to previous papers published in 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015. A corrected taxon index to all publications in this series is also part of this paper.

The land snail genus Pilsbrylia Hylton Scott, 1952 has been recently shown to not belong to the superfamily to which it was originally assigned (i.e., the Orthalicoidea), instead pointing out a relationship with the Clausilioidea. In this study, we included the type species of the genus in a multi-marker molecular phylogenetic framework to reassess its family-level classification. Our results show that Pilsbrylia belongs to family Clausiliidae (known as ‘door snails’) and more specifically, to subfamily Peruiniinae. This family is unique among stylommatophorans for consisting almost exclusively of animals with sinistral (left-handed) shells, whilst Pilsbrylia has a “typical” dextral shell.

This paper investigates Bostryx species from Peru, which show variation in shells shape and are partly carinated, using both ecological and molecular data. The study area is situated in a valley at the western side of the Andes, with a total length of 25 km and an altitudinal range of almost 1,140 m, but focuses on two localities: El Infernillo at ca. 3,350 m and Tambo de Viso at ca. 2,700 m. The morphological variation of the species presents a rather complex picture that cannot completely be resolved by ecological data alone. Molecular data points to three taxa, two of which are variable in shell shape and each restricted to one of the localities mentioned; the third taxon is constant in shell shape and occurs over a large range of the study area. The species originally described as Bostryx multiconspectus Breure, 2008 and B. primigenius Breure, 2008 are redefined as a result.

Type material of some South American species in the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, belonging to different families is documented. It includes 16 species: Bulimus cuneus L. Pfeiffer, 1854, Bulimus proteus Broderip, 1832, Bulimus scalarioides L. Pfeiffer, 1867, Bulimus similaris J. Moricand, 1856, Andinia (Ehrmanniella) dedicata Weyrauch & Zilch, 1954, Helix hettneriana E. von Martens, 1897, Eurycampta hidalgonis Döring, 1877, Helix aequatoris L. Pfeiffer, 1860, Helix bituberculata L. Pfeiffer, 1853, Helix bourcieri L. Pfeiffer, 1853, Helix neogranadensis L. Pfeiffer, 1845, Cyclostoma (Cyclophorus) bourcieri L. Pfeiffer, 1854, and Helix platygyra Albers, 1857. The concept of the “salvation” of type material is explained.

Currently there are several problems with the genus-level taxa within the Scolodontidae. Multiple type-species designations have been proposed for some genera, type species are poorly described, and in some cases no clear decisions have been made in cases of homonymy or synonymy. This has resulted in wrongly identified species and genera within this group, which, among other problems, hinders the discovery and description of new species as well as the identification of known species. This paper is the first in a series in which all scolodontid genera will be redescribed based on type materials, starting with Happia Bourguignat, 1890 and its allies. Nomenclatural issues are resolved where possible. One new genus and a new species are described: Luteostriatella gen. nov. and Austroselenites pichinchense sp. nov. The following new combinations are made: Happia andia (Pilsbry, 1932) comb. nov., Systrophiella altivaga (Crawford, 1939) comb. nov., Systrophiella cayennensis (L. Pfeiffer, 1842) comb. nov., Systrophiella pygmea (Spix in Spix & Wagner, 1827) comb. nov., Systrophiella snethlagei (F. Baker, 1913) comb. nov., Systrophiella vitrina ( J.A. Wagner in Spix & Wagner, 1827) comb. nov., and Luteostriatella variegata (F. Haas, 1949) comb. nov.

The superfamily Orthalicoidea comprises approximately 2,000 species of terrestrial gastropods, mostly concentrated in the Neotropics but also present in southern Africa and Oceania. We provide a multi-marker molecular phylogeny of this superfamily, reassessing its family- and genus-level classification. We exclude two families from the group, Odontostomidae and Vidaliellidae, transferring them to Rhytidoidea based on their phylogenetic relationships as recovered herein. Two new families are recognized herein as members of Orthalicoidea, Tomogeridae and Cyclodontinidae fam. nov. The family Megaspiridae and the subfamily Prestonellinae are paraphyletic but are retained herein for taxonomic stability. The subfamily Placostylinae is synonymized with Bothriembryontinae. The new genera Alterorhinus gen. nov. and Sanniostracus gen. nov. containing some Brazilian species are described here to better reflect the phylogeny. The fossil record and paleobiogeographic history of the group is explored under the new phylogenetic framework.

To provide some context, we also give brief overviews of Cuban and non-Cuban authors and journals issued on the island relevant for Cuban malacology.

Pfeiffer, 1846), Bulimulus diaphanus fraterculus (Potiez & Michaud, 1835), Deroceras laeve (Müller, 1774), Sarasinula marginata (Semper, 1885), Streptostele musaecola (Morelet, 1860) and Veronicella sloanii (Cuvier, 1817). The enigmatic Bulimulus stenogyroides Guppy, 1868 is now placed in the genus Naesiotus Albers, 1850. Helicina epistilia Guppy, 1868 is now considered a synonym of H. platychila (Megerle von Mühlfeld, 1824); H. goldfussi Boett ger, 1887 and H. rhodostoma inermis A.J. Wagner, 1910 are now put into the synonymy of H. rhodostoma Gray, 1824. Amphicyclotulus mineri Bartsch, 1942 is now considered a synonym of A. amethystinus (Guppy, 1868). Cycloblandia Bartsch, 1942 is treated as a junior subjective synonym of Amphicyclotulus Kobelt, 1912. Nine species, previously thought to occur on Dominica, are now removed from the faunal list of the island, due to inaccuracies of provenance of specimens or misidentifications. Finally, remarks are given on the distribution of species collected during the surveys.

A brief biography of A.C. van Bruggen is presented, with special emphasis on his scientific career, on the occasion of his 80th birthday. His many-fold interests and publications are highlighted and eponyms are listed that were introduced in the entomological and malacological literature. A list of new taxa proposed in malacology, entomology and botany is presented.

In this publication a revision is given of the genera of the subfamily Bulimulinae (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Bulimulidae). The morphological variation of the shell, radula, pallial organs and genitalia is analized and 21 character transition series are recognized. In the systematical part the following data are presented for each genus : description of shell and anatomy, distribution, ecology, bibliography and a list of taxa. The number of (sub) genera is reduced from 80 to 43 ( + two nomina inquirenda). A new synonymy is : Paracochlea Hylton Scott, 1967 = Eudioptus Albers, 1860. The following new species names are introduced : Bostryx sophieae, Drymaeus (Drymaeus) marcapatensis, Drymaeus (Drymaeus) sophieae, Drymaeus (Mesembrinus) pseudobesus. Berendtia digueti Mabille is designated type species of Teneritia Mabille ; Helix zoographica d'Orbigny is designated type species of Hamadryas Albers. Based on the transition series mentioned above, hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships are presented for the genus groups, using the methods of Hennig. The relationships between the five subfamilies of the Bulimulidae are also investigated but remain tentative. In the zoogeographical section the various theories are reviewed and their relevance for the distribution of the Bulimulinae is treated, using the hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships and Croizat's vicariance theory.

The following new taxa are described: Drymaeus ( Drymaeus) cleefi, Drymaeus (Drymaeus) palassus and Drymaeus (Drymaeus) yapacanensis. The variation in the size of the sculpture of the protoconch is analyzed and two groups, which roughly correspond to the subgenera Drymaeus and Mesembrinus, are distinguished. Furthermore the variation in the mandibula and radula of 46 species is analyzed. Anatomical data are presented for 52 species and four species are redescribed.

Notes are given on the systematic status and/or the anatomy of species of the subfamilies Odontostominae, Orthalicinae and Placostylinae. Furthermore the variation in mandibula and radula of 28, respectively 27, species is analysed. Anatomical data are presented for 25 species and 3 species are redescribed.

The second part of this series on the Bulimulidae deals with the genera Plekocheilus Guilding and Naesiotus Albers, two and six species of which are recognized respectively. The following new synonymy is proposed: Bulimulus chrysaloides Pilsbry = Naesiotus chrysalis (Pfeiffer). Bulimulus (Protoglyptus) sanctaeluciae var. luciae Pilsbry is considered to be a valid species.

During work for a generic revision of the family Bulimulidae some material from French Guyana and Surinam came to my hands. This material stems from the collections of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris (MNHN), the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (RMNH) and the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam (ZMA). The specimens of the present study belong mainly to the genera Bulimulus Leach, 1814 and Drymaeus Albers, 1850 (among them the type material of Vernhout (1914)). (3) Drymaeus succineus was described by Pilsbry (1901), not by Vernhout. The material upon which Vernhout based his record for Surinam consists of one specimen, which does not fit the redescription of Drymaeus succineus as given by Parodiz (1962). [I call in question whether the identification by Parodiz of succineus as a member of Stenostylus is correct]. It seems better to delete this taxon from the faunal list as given by Altena (1975). (4) Drymaeus quadrifasciatus Vernhout = Drymaeus vernhouti nom. n. (5) Simpulopsis corrugata Guppy belongs to the Bulimulinae instead of to the Amphibuliminae (misspelled Amphibulimulidae by Altena). 1) Notes on Bulimulidae, 3. — Basteria, 40: 3-6 (1976).

(3) Drymaeus succineus was described by Pilsbry (1901), not by Vernhout. The material upon which Vernhout based his record for Surinam consists of one specimen, which does not fit the redescription of Drymaeus succineus as given by Parodiz (1962). [I call in question whether the identification by Parodiz of succineus as a member of Stenostylus is correct]. It seems better to delete this taxon from the faunal list as given by Altena (1975). (4) Drymaeus quadrifasciatus Vernhout = Drymaeus vernhouti nom. n. (5) Simpulopsis corrugata Guppy belongs to the Bulimulinae instead of to the Amphibuliminae (misspelled Amphibulimulidae by Altena). 1) Notes on Bulimulidae, 3. — Basteria, 40: 3-6 (1976).

In this publication a revision is given of the genera of the subfamily Bulimulinae (Gastropoda, Pulmonata, Bulimulidae). The morphological variation of the shell, radula, pallial organs and genitalia is analized and 21 character transition series are recognized. In the systematical part the following data are presented for each genus : description of shell and anatomy, distribution, ecology, bibliography and a list of taxa. The number of (sub) genera is reduced from 80 to 43 ( + two nomina inquirenda). A new synonymy is : Paracochlea Hylton Scott, 1967 = Eudioptus Albers, 1860. The following new species names are introduced : Bostryx sophieae, Drymaeus (Drymaeus) marcapatensis, Drymaeus (Drymaeus) sophieae, Drymaeus (Mesembrinus) pseudobesus. Berendtia digueti Mabille is designated type species of Teneritia Mabille ; Helix zoographica d'Orbigny is designated type species of Hamadryas Albers. Based on the transition series mentioned above, hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships are presented for the genus groups, using the methods of Hennig. The relationships between the five subfamilies of the Bulimulidae are also investigated but remain tentative. In the zoogeographical section the various theories are reviewed and their relevance for the distribution of the Bulimulinae is treated, using the hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships and Croizat's vicariance theory.
