Objectives: Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular coccidian pathogen, with domestic cats and other members of the Felidae family serving as its definitive hosts. The aim of the study was to identify risk factors for positive test results. Methods: A laboratory database was screened for T gondii PCR results from faecal samples and serology results (IgM, IgG) from serum/plasma taken from cats in Europe between January 2008 and December 2022. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors associated with positive T gondii results, such as breed, age, sex, neuter status, regionality, seasonality, feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) status. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated. Results: A total of 45,523 cats were included: 14,500 (31.9%) tested positive by direct and/or indirect detection methods for T gondii (PCR: 126/7896 [1.6%], IgG: 14,148/37,882 [37.3%], IgM: 1539/37,882 [4.1%]). Age >5 years (IgG: OR 2.591, P <0.001; IgM: OR 1.954, P <0.001), European domestic shorthair cats/cross breeds (IgG: OR 3.848, P <0.001; IgM: OR 2.152, P <0.001), male sex (IgG: OR 1.134, P <0.001), neuter status in male (IgG: OR 0.536, P <0.001) and female cats (IgG: OR 0.577, P <0.001), FeLV antigen positivity (IgG: OR 1.358, P = 0.030) and FIV antibody positivity (IgG: OR 2.350, P <0.001; IgM: OR 2.650, P <0.001) significantly impacted the serological results. In PCR testing, neuter status had a significant impact in male (OR 2.455, P = 0.002) and female cats (OR 2.988, P <0.001). Serological and PCR results were significantly influenced by regionality for IgG (central: OR 1.454, P <0.001; north: OR 0.768, P <0.001; south: OR 0.526, P <0.001; east: OR 0.768, P <0.001; west: OR 0.709, P <0.001), IgM (central: OR 0.616, P <0.001; north: OR 1.456, P <0.001; south: OR 1.767, P <0.001; east: OR 1.456, P <0.001) and PCR testing (central: OR 0.460, P <0.001; north: OR 3.020, P = 0.002; east: OR 3.020, P = 0.002). Seasonality had a statistically significant impact on IgM (summer: OR 1.402, P <0.001; winter: OR 0.732, P <0.001) and PCR testing (autumn: OR 1.473, P = 0.038). Conclusions and relevance: Breed, age, sex, neuter status, seasonality and regionality significantly impacted serological results. Neuter status, seasonality and regionality significantly impacted the PCR results. Immunosuppression (FeLV/FIV) had a significant impact on serological results. PCR-positive cats shed oocysts and spread infection to other susceptible hosts, including humans. Surveillance is therefore recommended, taking into consideration the associated risk factors. Objectives: This study was aimed to assess the distribution and frequency of uroliths in cats as well as to evaluate gender-, age-, and breed-specific differences., Material and Methods: 3629 uroliths from cats in Germany were analyzed by infrared-spectroscopy during the period 2016-2020. The majority (3300) of the uroliths originated from purebred cats of 22 breeds., Results: Uroliths were prevalent in the order of male neutered (45.3 %), female spayed (35.3 %), male intact (7.4 %), and female intact cats (6.3 %). Median age of the cats with uroliths was 7 years, although it varied slightly depending on types of the urolith. The most frequent uroliths were calcium oxalate (59.5 %), followed by struvite (33.7 %), ammonium urate (2 %), calcium phosphate (1.7 %), cystine (0.7 %) and xanthine (0.4 %). Males (59.4 %) and females (59.2 %) showed nearly identical prevalence of calcium oxalates, whereas it significantly diverged in castrated (60.2 %) versus intact animals (54.4 %; p = 0.01). With regard to struvites, male cats (32.6 %) were less prone than females (35.4 %; p = 0.08) while intact cats (38.2 %) significantly outnumbered the castrated cohorts (33.1 %; p = 0.02). The prevalence for calcium oxalate uroliths increased by 6.6 % during the study period, contrasting a decrease of 5.5 % for struvites. Some breeds (> 10 individuals) showed significantly higher propensities than others for urolith formation. Calcium oxalates were significantly more frequent in British shorthair cats (85.2 %), Ragdoll (75 %), Scottish fold (74.1 %) and Persians (72.4 %). Struvites were prevailing in Norwegian forest cats (48.5 %), British longhair (41.7 %), European shorthair (41.7 %) and Siberian forest cats (36.8 %). Siamese cats had the significantly highest percentage of cystine uroliths (16 %)., Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: The occurrence of urine calculi in cats from Germany was found to be most frequent for calcium oxalate and struvite types. Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the distribution and frequency of uroliths in dogs in Germany and to evaluate age-, gender-, and breed-specific differences., Material and Methods: A total of 2772 uroliths from dogs in Germany that had been submitted from veterinary practices during the years 2017-2019 were analyzed by infrared spectroscopy., Results: Uroliths were analyzed as follows: Struvite (44.7 %), calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite 24.5 %), cystine (15.2 %), ammonium urate (5.3 %), calcium oxalate dihydrate (weddellite 4.4 %), calcium phosphate (1.6 %), xanthine (1.2 %), whewellite/weddellite (11 %), brushite (0.4 %) and other substances (1.7 %). The dogs' median age (in years) with regards to the urolith type amounted to: struvite 8, calcium oxalate (whewellite and weddellite) 10, cystine 5, brushite 11, xanthine 6.5, and ammonium urate 6 years. Struvite uroliths were most common in intact females (83.8 %) and neutered females (80.8 %), while cystine uroliths (36.7 %) and calcium oxalates (35.7 % whewellite and weddellite) were most common in intact males. Calcium oxalate (50 %), struvite (17.3 %), and cystine uroliths (10.5 %) were found in male neutered dogs. The most frequent breeds with struvite uroliths were Pug (75.9 %), Labrador (73.1 %), Shih Tzu (62.2 %), Dachshund (50.4 %) and Maltese (36 %). Calcium oxalates were most frequently encountered in the breeds Miniature Schnauzer (54.8 %), Jack Russell Terrier (49.5 %), and Yorkshire Terrier (48.2 %). Cystine uroliths were most frequent in the breeds French Bulldog (47.2 %), Bulldogs (44.8 %), Chihuahua (44.1 %) and Dachshund (32.8 %)., Conclusion and Clinical Relevance: Dogs from Germany displayed age-, gender- and breed-specific differences in the frequency of urine calculi occurrence. Knowledge of the frequent occurrence of the distinct uroliths in Germany as well as potential breed dispositions allow the veterinarian to implement an appropriate preventive treatment plan. Objective: The study aimed to investigate the distribution of specific immune responses (IgG) to Borrelia burgdorferi using a line immunoassay with recombinant VlsE (variable major protein-like sequence, expressed) protein and synthetic C peptide among other antigens. We compared the immune responses to VlsE protein and C 6 peptide, because both antigens have been considered specific for a Borrelia infection., Materials and Methods: A total of 1355 blood samples from dogs suspected of Borrelia infection were analysed. The line immunoassay employed nine antigens., Results: A total of 64.4% of all samples tested negative, 16.4% were positive for an infection and 17.4% were positive for vaccination. Band patterns specific for both infection and vaccination were observed in 1.2% of the dogs. The bands that most frequently tested positive were p100 (24.3%), p31/OspA (18.5%), C 6 (16.3%) and VlsE (13.9%). A total of 236 dogs (17.4% of the population) had antibodies to VlsE and/or C 6 peptide. In 73.3% of these dogs, results for VlsE and C 6 peptide were consistent, whereas this was not the case for 26.7% of these animals., Conclusion and Clinical Relevance: Testing using a line immunoassay allows for qualitative analyses of different immune responses to various antigens used as probes. In our study, >  26% of the dogs displayed discrepant results with regard to VlsE and C 6 , the two antigens considered specific for Borrelia burgdorferi infection. To confirm or rule out infection, the results of several band patterns, thought to be specific for infection, need to be taken into consideration.
