Background There are no Italian data regarding the strategies for preventing neonatal group B streptococcal (GBS) infection. We conducted a national survey in order to explore obstetrical, neonatal and microbiological practices for the GBS prevention. Methods Three distinct questionnaires were sent to obstetricians, neonatologists and microbiologists. Questionnaires included data on prenatal GBS screening, maternal risk factors, intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis, microbiological information concerning specimen processing and GBS antimicrobial susceptibility. Results All respondent obstetrical units used the culture-based screening approach to identify women who should receive intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis, and more than half of the microbiological laboratories (58%) reported using specimen processing consistent with CDC guidelines. Most neonatal units (89 out of 107, 82%) reported using protocols for preventing GBS early-onset sepsis consistent with CDC guidelines. Conclusions The screening-based strategy is largely prevalent in Italy, and most protocols for preventing GBS early-onset sepsis are consistent with CDC guidelines. However, we found discrepancies in practices among centers that may reflect the lack of Italian guidelines issued by public health organizations.

International audience; This paper presents a fast and accurate synthesis process applied to a printed reflectarray working in dual-polarization in Ku band. The used elementary cell is the slot-loaded patch offering numerous geometrical parameters to tune the desired reflected phase. Different cell selection strategies are proposed and compared to generate layouts with optimized characteristics. Three layouts have been designed, fabricated and measured in order to assess the proposed strategies.

Reflectarray ,Non Uniform FFT ,Antenna Synthesi - Abstract
When designing conformal/faceted reflectarrays, the non planar geometry prevents the use of canonical fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithms so that the computational complexity required by phase-only synthesis techniques can become prohibitive for the large antennas normally exploited in satellite applications. In this paper, a new approach, based on the use of a proper approximation of the far field pattern expression, is presented. The method allows a massive use of FFTs, along with advanced FFT algorithms, known as FFTW, capable to adapt their performance to the hardware platform. The results for a faceted shaped-beam reflectarray providing the Galaxy 17 coverage are reported.

- Abstract
Background: Unintentionally retained foreign bodies in the breast are a rare phenomenon. Most reported cases are iatrogenically derived from surgeries and procedures. Only a handful of reported cases refer to noniatrogenic causes, including bullets, a sewing needle, and a headscarf pin. However, there are no reports to date that describe a retained foreign body in the breast after a motor vehicle collision or a similar traumatic event or from a decorative steering wheel emblem decal. Case Description: We report the case of a 25-year-old female who was involved in a motor vehicle collision with airbag deployment that led to a left breast retained foreign body, a steering wheel emblem decal. On presentation to the emergency room, she reported left chest pain associated with a puncture wound lateral to the left nipple. Imaging at that time was consistent with a metallic object embedded in the subcutaneous tissue of the left breast. Four months after the accident, the patient continued having daily burning pain in the associated area. As such, surgical excision was recommended, and wire-localized excision of the foreign body was subsequently performed. Grossly, the foreign body appeared as a metallic object with rhinestones, which the patient confirmed was a decorative emblem decal that was on her steering wheel. The postoperative course was uncomplicated, and follow-up examinations revealed resolution of the left breast pain. Conclusions: This case underscores a unique presentation after a common accident-a retained foreign body in the breast after a motor vehicle collision-and its successful surgical intervention leading to a favorable postoperative course. Notably, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently advised drivers against adding decorative emblem decals to their steering wheels for this reason. The case therefore highlights safety precautions that should be taken regarding the addition of this type of accessory., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest., (Copyright © 2024 Daniela Bresciani and Jacqueline Tsai.)

- Abstract
Monocytic cells perform crucial homeostatic and defensive functions. However, their fate and characterization at the transcriptomic level in human tissues are partially understood, often as a consequence of the lack of specific markers allowing their unequivocal identification. The 6-sulfo LacNAc (slan) antigen identifies a subset of non-classical (NC) monocytes in the bloodstream, namely the slan
+ -monocytes. In recent studies, we and other groups have reported that, in tonsils, slan marks dendritic cell (DC)-like cells, as defined by morphological, phenotypical, and functional criteria. However, subsequent investigations in lymphomas have uncovered a significant heterogeneity of tumor-infiltrating slan+ -cells, including a macrophage-like state. Based on their emerging role in tissue inflammation and cancer, herein we investigated slan+ -cell fate in tonsils by using a molecular-based approach. Hence, RNA from tonsil slan+ -cells, conventional CD1c+ DCs (cDC2) and CD11b+ CD14+ -macrophages was subjected to gene expression analysis. For comparison, transcriptomes were also obtained from blood cDC2, classical (CL), intermediate (INT), NC, and slan+ -monocytes. Data demonstrate that the main trajectory of human slan+ -monocytes infiltrating the tonsil tissue is toward a macrophage-like population, displaying molecular features distinct from those of tonsil CD11b+ CD14+ -macrophages and cDC2. These findings provide a novel view on the terminal differentiation path of slan+ -monocytes, which is relevant for inflammatory diseases and lymphomas., (© 2020 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.)- Published

- Abstract
Background: Urothelial bladder cancers (UBCs) are distinct in two main molecular subtypes, namely basal and luminal type. Subtypes are also diverse in term of immune contexture, providing a rationale for patient selection to immunotherapy., Methods: By digital microscopy analysis of a muscle-invasive BC (MIBC) cohort, we explored the density and clinical significance of CD66b
+ tumor-associated-neutrophils (TAN) and CD3+ T cells. Bioinformatics analysis of UBC datasets and gene expression analysis of UBC cell lines were additionally performed., Results: Basal type BC contained a significantly higher density of CD66b+ TAN compared to the luminal type. This finding was validated on TCGA, GSE32894 and GSE124305 datasets by computing a neutrophil signature. Of note, basal-type MIBC display a significantly higher level of chemokines (CKs) attracting neutrophils. Moreover, pro-inflammatory stimuli significantly up-regulate CXCL1, CXCL2 and CXCL8 in 5637 and RT4 UBC cell lines and induce neutrophil chemotaxis. In term of survival, a high density of T celsl and TAN was significantly associated to a better outcome, with TAN density showing a more limited statistical power and following a non-linear predicting model., Conclusions: TAN are recruited in basal type MIBC by pro-inflammatory CKs. This finding establishes a groundwork for a better understanding of the UBC immunity and its relevance., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interests.- Published

- Abstract
Urothelial bladder cancer (UBC) are classified into luminal and basal subtypes showing distinct molecular features and clinical behaviour. Recent in silico data have proposed the activation on the Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3 (STAT3) as relevant transcription factor in UBC. To answer this question, we have combined the retrospective analysis of clinical samples, functional assays on cell lines, interrogation of public UBC datasets and a murine model of basal-type UBC. Immunohistochemistry on a retrospective UBC cohort uncovered that STAT3 Y705 phosphorylation (pSTAT3) is significantly increased in infiltrating basal-type UBC compared to luminal UBC. In vitro, STAT3 silencing in UBC cell lines significantly reduced tumor cell viability and invasion. Gene expression profile of UBC cell lines combined with the analysis of the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and GSE32894 UBC datasets showed that increased expression of a set of STAT3 targets predicts basal-type, propensity to local progression and worse prognosis. MYC and FOSL1 represent relevant STAT3 downstream targets, as validated by their co-localization in pSTAT3+ UBC cancer cells. These findings were largely reproduced in the BBN-induced murine model of basal-type UBC. Of note, FOSL1 protein resulted strongly expressed in the non-papillary UBC pathway and FOSL1-regulated transcripts were significantly enriched in the transition from NMIBC to MIBC, as indicated by the interrogation of the GSE32894 dataset. The blockade of the STAT3 pathway might represent a novel treatment option for these neoplasms. Monitoring pSTAT3 and the downstream targets, particularly FOSL1, could provide meaningful levels of UBC stratification.

- Abstract
1. We studied the changes in interleukin-1 and interleukin-6 secretion by peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 12 premenopausal women after oophorectomy and seven premenopausal women who had undergone simple hysterectomy. 2. The results showed that 1 month after surgery interleukin-1 secretion increased by 414 +/- 171% (mean +/- SEM) and interleukin-6 secretion increased by 1354 +/- 481% in oophorectomized women, whereas only non-significant fluctuations in the secretion of both cytokines (-9% +/- 29% for interleukin-1 and -31% +/- 19% for interleukin-6) were seen in the women who had undergone simple hysterectomy. The difference between the two groups was significant (P = 0.035 for interleukin-1 and P = 0.003 for interleukin-6). In addition, oophorectomy, but not simple hysterectomy, was followed by significant increases in plasma ionized calcium concentration (P < 0.05), plasma alkaline phosphatase activity (P < 0.01) and plasma osteocalcin concentration (P < 0.02), and a reduction in plasma parathyroid hormone level (P < 0.01). 3. We conclude that ovary ablation may modify cytokine secretion by peripheral blood mononuclear cells. If this phenomenon occurs in the bone microenvironment, it could be important in the loss of bone observed after oophorectomy. However, the possibility of an independent alteration induced by the lack of gonadal hormones but unrelated to bone turnover cannot be excluded.
