Nanostructured materials may provide a route to overcome the electrode-limiting performance in water splitting, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), within the framework of low-cost catalysts search. However, for alloyed NiFe nanostructures, the relationship among the OER efficiency and the electrode physical characteristics (morphology, porosity, size, thickness, or mass loading) is largely unknown. This work introduces a new type of alloyed NiFe (90/10% at) nanogranular electrodes obtained by supersonic cluster beam deposition and investigates the dependence of their catalytic activity toward the OER on the film morphological and stoichiometric properties. The synthesized alloyed NiFe nanoparticles with 0.3-3.8 nm size assemble from the gas phase to form ultrathin film electrodes with thickness in the 15-88 nm range, corresponding to 5-30 mu g/cm2 mass loading. The fitting of the optical spectroscopic data by an effective medium approximation model suggests that, independent of the thickness, the films have a 20% porosity and are completely hydroxydated. The resulting catalytic efficiency is independent on the film thickness, while the turnover frequency decreases with increasing electrode loading. These data suggest that an excess of catalyst mass with respect to the OER active sites is deposited in the case of thicker electrodes and sets the 15 nm film as an upper loading limit to maximize the electrocatalyst efficiency. This study represents a crucial step toward thickness optimization of NiFe electrodes to fabricate low-cost OER catalysts.

Colloidal CdTe nanoplatelets featuring a large absorption coefficient and ultrafast tunable luminescence coupled with heavy-metal-based composition present themselves as highly desirable candidates for radiation detection technologies. Historically, however, these nanoplatelets have suffered from poor emission efficiency, hindering progress in exploring their technological potential. Here, we report the synthesis of CdTe nanoplatelets possessing a record emission efficiency of 9%. This enables us to investigate their fundamental photophysics using ultrafast transient absorption, temperature-controlled photoluminescence, and radioluminescence measurements, elucidating the origins of exciton- and defect-related phenomena under both optical and ionizing excitation. For the first time in CdTe nanoplatelets, we report the cumulative effects of a giant oscillator strength transition and exciton fine structure. Simultaneously, thermally stimulated luminescence measurements reveal the presence of both shallow and deep trap states and allow us to disclose the trapping and detrapping dynamics and their influence on the scintillation properties.

"Charge engineering" of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) through so-called electronic impurity doping is a long-standing challenge in colloidal chemistry and holds promise for ground-breaking advancements in many optoelectronic, photonic, and spin-based nanotechnologies. To date, our knowledge is limited to a few paradigmatic studies on a small number of model compounds and doping conditions, with important electronic dopants still unexplored in nanoscale systems. Equally importantly, fine-tuning of charge engineered NCs is hampered by the statistical limitations of traditional approaches. The resulting intrinsic doping inhomogeneity restricts fundamental studies to statistically averaged behaviors and complicates the realization of advanced device concepts based on their advantageous functionalities. Here we aim to address these issues by realizing the first example of II-VI NCs electronically doped with an exact number of heterovalent gold atoms, a known p-type acceptor impurity in bulk chalcogenides. Single-dopant accuracy across entire NC ensembles is obtained through a novel non-injection synthesis employing ligand-exchanged gold clusters as "quantized" dopant sources to seed the nucleation of CdSe NCs in organic media. Structural, spectroscopic, and magneto-optical investigations trace a comprehensive picture of the physical processes resulting from the exact doping level of the NCs. Gold atoms, doped here for the first time into II-VI NCs, are found to incorporate as nonmagnetic Au + species activating intense size-tunable intragap photoluminescence and artificially offsetting the hole occupancy of valence band states. Fundamentally, the transient conversion of Au + to paramagnetic Au 2+ (5d 9 configuration) under optical excitation results in strong photoinduced magnetism and diluted magnetic semiconductor behavior revealing the contribution of individual paramagnetic impurities to the macroscopic magnetism of the NCs. Ternary I-III-VI2 nanocrystals (NCs), such as CuInS2, are receiving attention as heavy-metals-free materials for solar cells, luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), LEDs, and bio-imaging. The origin of the optical properties of CuInS2 NCs are however not fully understood. A recent theoretical model suggests that their characteristic Stokes-shifted and long-lived luminescence arises from the structure of the valence band (VB) and predicts distinctive optical behaviours in defect-free NCs: the quadratic dependence of the radiative decay rate and the Stokes shift on the NC radius. If confirmed, this would have crucial implications for LSCs as the solar spectral coverage ensured by low-bandgap NCs would be accompanied by increased re-absorption losses. Here, by studying stoichiometric CuInS2 NCs, it is revealed for the first time the spectroscopic signatures predicted for the free band-edge exciton, thus supporting the VB-structure model. At very low temperatures, the NCs also show dark-state emission likely originating from enhanced electron-hole spin interaction. The impact of the observed optical behaviours on LSCs is evaluated by Monte Carlo ray-tracing simulations. Based on the emerging device design guidelines, optical-grade large-area (30×30 cm2) LSCs with optical power efficiency (OPE) as high as 6.8% are fabricated, corresponding to the highest value reported to date for large-area devices.

We report here the synthesis of undoped and Cu-doped Cs2ZnCl4 nanocrystals (NCs) in which we could tune the concentration of Cu from 0.7 to 7.5%. Cs2ZnCl4 has a wide band gap (4.8 eV), and its crystal structure is composed of isolated ZnCl4 tetrahedra surrounded by Cs+ cations. According to our electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, in 0.7 and 2.1% Cu-doped NCs the Cu ions were present in the +1 oxidation state only, while in NCs at higher Cu concentrations we could detect Cu(II) ions (isovalently substituting the Zn(II) ions). The undoped Cs2ZnCl4 NCs were non emissive, while the Cu-doped samples had a bright intragap photoluminescence (PL) at similar to 2.6 eV mediated by band-edge absorption. Interestingly, the PL quantum yield was maximum (similar to 55%) for the samples with a low Cu concentration ([Cu] <= 2.1%), and it systematically decreased when further increasing the concentration of Cu, reaching 15% for the NCs with the highest doping level ([Cu] = 7.5%). The same (similar to 2.55 eV) emission band was detected under X-ray excitation. Our density functional theory calculations indicated that the PL emission could be ascribed only to Cu(I) ions: these ions promote the formation of trapped excitons, through which an efficient emission takes place. Overall, these Cu-doped Cs2ZnCl4 NCs, with their high photo- and radio-luminescence emission in the blue spectral region that is free from reabsorption, are particularly suitable for applications in ionizing radiation detection.

We describe two synthesis approaches to colloidal Cu3P nanocrystals using trioctylphosphine (TOP) as phosphorus precursor. One approach is based on the homogeneous nucleation of small Cu3P nanocrystals with hexagonal plate-like morphology and with sizes that can be tuned from 5 to 50 nm depending on the reaction time. In the other approach, metallic Cu nanocrystals are nucleated first and then they are progressively phosphorized to Cu3P. In this case, intermediate Janus-like dimeric nanoparticles can be isolated, which are made of two domains of different materials, Cu and Cu3P, sharing a flat epitaxial interface. The Janus-like nanoparticles can be transformed back to single-crystalline copper particles if they are annealed at high temperature under high vacuum conditions, which makes them an interesting source of phosphorus. The features of the Cu Cu3P Janus-like nanoparticles are compared with those of the Wiped microstructure discovered more than two decades ago in the rapidly quenched Cu Cu3P eutectic of the Cu P alloy, suggesting that other alloy/eutectic systems that display similar behavior might give origin to nanostructures with flat, epitaxial Interface between domains of two diverse materials.Finally, the electrochemical properties of the copper phosphide plates are studied, and they are found to be capable of undergoing lithiation/delithiation through a displacement reaction, while the Janus-like Cu Cu3P particles do not display an electrochemical behavior that would make them suitable for applications in batteries.

The carbon layer formed during the bias enhanced nucleation (BEN) procedure on iridium has been studied by different electron diffraction techniques. In reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and low energy electron diffraction (LEED) the carbon nucleation layer does not give any indication of crystalline diamond even if the presence of domains proves successful nucleation. In contrast, X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) shows a clear C 1s pattern when domains are present after BEN. The anisotropy in the Ir XPD patterns is reduced after BEN while the fine structure is essentially identical compared to a single crystal Ir film. The change in the Ir XPD patterns after BEN can be explained by the carbon layer on top of a crystallographically unmodified Ir film. The loss and change in the fine structure of the C 1s patterns as compared to a single crystal diamond film are discussed in terms of mosaicity and a defective structure of the ordered fraction within the carbon layer. The present results suggest that the real structure of the BEN layer is more complex than a pure composition of small but perfect diamond crystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix.
