We present a detailed study of the barium star at the heart of the planetary nebula Abell 70. Time-series photometry obtained over a period of more than ten years demonstrates that the barium-contaminated companion is a rapid rotator with temporal variability due to spots. The amplitude and phasing of the photometric variability changes abruptly, however there is no evidence for a change in the rotation period (P = 2.06~d) over the course of the observations. The co-addition of 17 high-resolution spectra obtained with VLT-UVES allow us to measure the physical and chemical properties of the companion, confirming it to be a chromospherically-active, late G-type sub-giant with more than +1~dex of barium enhancement. We find no evidence of radial velocity variability in the spectra, obtained over the course of approximately 130~d with a single additional point some 8 years later, with the radial velocities of all epochs approximately $-$10 \kms{} from the previously measured systemic velocity of the nebula. This is perhaps indicative that the binary has a relatively long period (P $\gtrsim$ 2~yr) and high eccentricity ($e\gtrsim$ 0.3), and that all the observations were taken around radial velocity minimum. However, unless the binary orbital plane is not aligned with the waist of the nebula or the systemic velocity of the binary is not equal to the literature value for the nebula, this would imply an unfeasibly large mass for the nebular progenitor., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Here we analyse images of the planetary nebula NGC 3132 from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observations. A structured, extended hydrogen halo surrounding an ionized central bubble is imprinted with spiral structures, probably shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at about 40–60 au. The images also reveal a mid-infrared excess at the central star, interpreted as a dusty disk, which is indicative of an interaction with another closer companion. Including the previously known A-type visual companion, the progenitor of the NGC 3132 planetary nebula must have been at least a stellar quartet. The JWST images allow us to generate a model of the illumination, ionization and hydrodynamics of the molecular halo, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate complex stellar outflows. Furthermore, new measurements of the A-type visual companion allow us to derive the value for the mass of the progenitor of a central star with excellent precision: 2.86 ± 0.06 M⊙. A medium- and high-resolution spectroscopic survey of helium-rich hot subdwarfs is being carried out using the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). Objectives include the discovery of exotic hot subdwarfs and of sequences connecting chemically-peculiar subdwarfs of different types. The first phase consists of medium-resolution spectroscopy of over 100 stars selected from low-resolution surveys. This paper describes the selection criteria, and the observing, classification and analysis methods. It presents 107 spectral classifications on the MK-like Drilling system and 106 coarse analyses ($T_{\rm eff}, \log g, \log y$) based on a hybrid grid of zero-metal non-LTE and line-blanketed LTE model atmospheres. For 75 stars, atmospheric parameters have been derived for the first time. The sample may be divided into 6 distinct groups including the classical `helium-rich' sdO stars with spectral types (Sp) sdO6.5 - sdB1 (74) comprising carbon-rich (35) and carbon-weak (39) stars, very hot He-sdO's with Sp $\lesssim$ sdO6 (13), extreme helium stars with luminosity class $\lesssim 5$ (5), intermediate helium-rich subdwarfs with helium class 25 -- 35 (8), and intermediate helium-rich subdwarfs with helium class $10 - 25$ (6). The last covers a narrow spectral range (sdB0 -- sdB1) including two known and four candidate heavy-metal subdwarfs. Current models predict that binary interactions are a major ingredient for the formation of bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) and pre-planetary nebulae (PPNe). Despite years of radial velocity (RV) monitoring, the paucity of known binaries amongst the latter systems is insufficient to examine this relationship in detail. In this paper, we report on the discovery of a long period (P=2654$\pm$124 d) binary at the centre of the Galactic bipolar PPN, IRAS 08005-2356 (V510 Pup) determined from long-term spectroscopic and near-infrared time series data. The spectroscopic orbit is fit with an eccentricity of 0.36$\pm$0.05 that is similar to other long period post-AGB binaries. Time resolved H$\alpha$ profiles reveal high-velocity outflows (jets) with de-projected velocities up to 231$_{-27}^{+31}$ km s$^{-1}$ seen at phases when the luminous primary is behind the jet. The outflow traced by H$\alpha$ is likely produced via accretion onto a main sequence companion for which we calculate a mass of 0.63$\pm$0.13 M$_\odot$. This discovery is one of the first cases of a confirmed binary PPN and demonstrates the importance of high-resolution spectroscopic monitoring surveys on large telescopes in revealing binarity among these systems., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 10 Pages, 7 Figures

Barium (Ba) dwarfs and CH subgiants are the less evolved analogues of Ba and CH giants. They are F-to G-Type main-sequence stars polluted with heavy elements by their binary companions when the companion was on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB). This companion is now a white dwarf that in most cases cannot be directly detected. We present a large systematic study of 60 objects classified as Ba dwarfs or CH subgiants. Combining radial-velocity measurements from HERMES and SALT high-resolution spectra with radial-velocity data from CORAVEL and CORALIE, we determine the orbital parameters of 27 systems. We also derive their masses by comparing their location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with evolutionary models. We confirm that Ba dwarfs and CH subgiants are not at different evolutionary stages, and that they have similar metallicities, despite their different names. Additionally, Ba giants appear significantly more massive than their main-sequence analogues. This is likely due to observational biases against the detection of hotter main-sequence post-mass-Transfer objects. Combining our spectroscopic orbits with the HIPPARCOS astrometric data, we derive the orbital inclination and the mass of the WD companion for four systems. Since this cannot be done for all systems in our sample yet (but should be possible with upcoming Gaia data releases), we also analyse the mass-function distribution of our binaries. We can model this distribution with very narrow mass distributions for the two components and random orbital orientations on the sky. Finally, based on BINSTAR evolutionary models, we suggest that the orbital evolution of low-mass Ba systems can be affected by a second phase of interactions along the red giant branch of the Ba star, which impact the eccentricities and periods of the giants., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

SMP LMC 88 is one of the planetary nebulae (PN) in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We identify in its spectrum Raman scattered O VI lines at 6825 and 7083A. This unambiguously classifies the central object of the nebula as a symbiotic star (SySt). We identified the cold component to be a K-type giant, making this the first D'-type (yellow) SySt discovered outside the Galaxy. The photometric variability in SMP LMC 88 resembles the the orbital variability of Galactic D'-type SySt with its low amplitude and sinusoidal lightcurve shape. Whether planetary nebulae (PNe) are predominantly the product of binary stellar evolution as some population synthesis models (PSM) suggest remains an open question. Around 50 short period binary central stars ($P\sim1$ d) are known, but with only four with measured orbital periods over 10 d, our knowledge is severely incomplete. Here we report on the first discovery from a systematic SALT HRS survey for long period binary central stars. We find a 142 d orbital period from radial velocities of the central star of NGC~1360, HIP~16566. NGC~1360 appears to be the product of common-envelope (CE) evolution, with nebula features similar to post-CE PNe, albeit with an orbital period considerably longer than expected to be typical of post-CE PSM. The most striking feature is a newly-identified ring of candidate low-ionisation structures (LIS). Previous spatio-kinematic modelling of the nebula gives a nebula inclination of $30\pm10$ deg, and assuming the binary nucleus is coplanar with the nebula, multi-wavelength observations best fit a more massive, evolved WD companion. A WD companion in a 142 d orbit is not the focus of many PSM, making NGC~1360 a valuable system with which to improve future PSM work. HIP~16566 is amongst many central stars in which large radial velocity variability was found by low-resolution surveys. We present a detailed study of the binary central star of the planetary nebula ETHOS 1 (PN G068.1+11.0). Simultaneous modelling of light and radial velocity curves reveals the binary to comprise a hot and massive pre-white dwarf with an M-type main-sequence companion. A good fit to the observations was found with a companion that follows expected mass–temperature–radius relationships for low-mass stars, indicating that despite being highly irradiated, it is consistent with not being significantly hotter or larger than a typical star of the same mass. Previous modelling indicated that ETHOS 1 may comprise the first case where the orbital plane of the central binary does not lie perpendicular to the nebular symmetry axis, at odds with the expectation that the common envelope is ejected in the orbital plane. We find no evidence for such a discrepancy, deriving a binary inclination in agreement with that of the nebula as determined by spatio-kinematic modelling. This makes ETHOS 1 the ninth post-common-envelope planetary nebula in which the binary orbital and nebular symmetry axes have been shown to be aligned, with as yet no known counter-examples. SALT spectra of the helium-rich hot subdwarf EC22536-5304 show strong absorption lines of triply-ionized lead. Analysis of the HRS spectrum and a follow-up SALT/RSS spectrum show EC22536-5304 to have surface properties (temperature, gravity, helium/hydrogen ratio) similar to other heavy-metal subdwarfs. With a lead overabundance of 4.8 dex relative to solar, EC22536-5304 is the most lead-rich intermediate helium subdwarf discovered so far., 8 pages, 3 figures, MNRAS in press

The orbital period distribution of close binary stars consisting of a white dwarf and a main-sequence star (WDMS) is a powerful observational constraint on population synthesis models of the poorly understood common-envelope (CE) interaction. Models have often struggled to reproduce the small number of post-CE WDMS binaries with anomalously long orbital periods greater than $\sim$4 d, though recent studies suggest that in longer period systems recombination energy may help contribute to the efficient ejection of the CE. Planetary nebulae (PNe) are an emerging source of rare long period post-CE binaries which can act as powerful complementary constraints on population synthesis models to more traditional post-CE binary populations. A tentative 9.0 d orbital period was recently proposed for the central star of the PN IC~4776, potentially one of the longest periods observed in post-CE WDMS binaries. Here we present SALT HRS observations of IC~4776 that rule out a 9.0 d orbital period, as well as the previously suggested Wolf-Rayet classification of the primary. The SALT HRS data establish a 3.11 d orbital period and rule out Of and Wolf-Rayet primary spectral types. Assuming a mass of 0.6 $M_\odot$ for the primary and an orbital inclination matching the nebula orientation, we find a companion mass of $0.22\pm0.03$ $M_\odot$, most likely corresponding to an M4V companion. The orbital period of IC~4776 is still consistent with findings of abundance discrepancy factor (ADF) studies of post-CE PNe, but any trends in the ADF distribution derived from the sample remain significantly biased by selection effects., 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. New spectra of 81 ultracool dwarfs (spectral types M7 and later) are discussed. Spectral classifications of 49 objects are available in the literature, while 32 objects are newly classified. The known spectral types were used to test an automated classification scheme, which relies primarily on template fitting, supplemented by matching of spectral indices calibrated against the template spectra. An attempt was made to quantify the uncertainty in the spectral types, which is generally better than two subclasses. Objects for which spectral types differ by more than one subclass from the literature classifications are discussed individually. Discrepancies between automated classifications based on respectively template fitting and spectral index matching, may be useful for flagging objects with unusual spectra. Aside from the 32 first-time classifications, alternative classifications are presented for 32 previously classified dwarfs. Very large (equivalent width greater than 130 \AA) H$\alpha$ flares are reported for the known ultracool dwarf binary 2MASS J15200224$-$4422419; curiously, the object does not appear to have quiescent emission lines. While most of the low-mass stars stay hydrogen-rich on their surface throughout their evolution, a considerable fraction of white dwarfs as well as central stars of planetary nebulae have a hydrogen-deficient surface composition. The majority of these H-deficient central stars exhibit spectra very similar to massive Wolf-Rayet stars of the carbon sequence, i.e. with broad emission lines of carbon, helium, and oxygen. In analogy to the massive Wolf-Rayet stars, they are classified as [WC] stars. Their formation, which is relatively well understood, is thought to be the result of a (very) late thermal pulse of the helium burning shell. It is therefore surprising that some H-deficient central stars which have been found recently, e.g. IC 4663 and Abell 48, exhibit spectra that resemble those of the massive Wolf-Rayet stars of the nitrogen sequence, i.e. with strong emission lines of nitrogen instead of carbon. This new type of central stars is therefore labelled [WN]. T CrB is a symbiotic recurrent nova known to exhibit active phases, characterised by apparent increases in the hot component temperature and the appearance of flickering, i.e. changes in the observed flux on the time-scale of minutes. Historical UV observations have ruled out orbital variability as an explanation for flickering and instead suggest flickering is caused by variable mass transfer. We have analysed optical and X-ray observations to investigate the nature of the flickering as well as the active phases in T CrB. The spectroscopic and photometric observations confirm that the active phases follow two periods of ~1000d and ~5000d. Flickering in the X-rays is detected and follows an amplitude-flux relationship similar to that observed in the optical. The flickering is most prominent at harder X-ray energies, suggesting that it originates in the boundary layer between the accretion disc and the white dwarf. The X-ray radiation from the boundary layer is then reprocessed by a thick accretion disc or a nebula into UV radiation. A more detailed understanding of flickering would benefit from long-term simultaneous X-ray and optical monitoring of the phenomena in symbiotic recurrent novae and related systems such as Z And type symbiotic stars., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Classical nova outburst has been suggested for a number of extragalactic symbiotic stars, but in none of the systems has it been proven. In this work we study the nature of one of these systems, LMC S154. We gathered archival photometric observations in order to determine the timescales and nature of variability in this system. Additionally we carried out photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of the system and fitted synthetic spectra to the observations. Carbon abundance in the photosphere of the red giant is significantly higher than that derived for the nebula, which confirms pollution of the circumbinary material by the ejecta from nova outburst. The photometric and spectroscopic data show that the system reached quiescence in 2009, which means that for the first time all of the phases of a nova outburst were observed in an extragalactic symbiotic star. The data indicate that most probably there were three outbursts observed in LMC S154, which would make this system a member of a rare class of symbiotic recurrent novae. The recurrent nature of the system is supported by the discovery of coronal lines in the spectra, which are observed only in symbiotic stars with massive white dwarfs and with short-recurrence-time outbursts. Gathered evidence is sufficient to classify LMC S154 as the first bona fide extragalactic symbiotic nova, which is likely a recurrent nova. The substantial number of binary central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) now known ($\sim$50) has revealed a strong connection between binarity and some morphological features including jets and low-ionisation structures. However, some features and asymmetries might be too complex or subtle to ascribe to binary interactions alone. A tertiary component, i.e. a triple nucleus, could be the missing ingredient required to produce these features. The only proven triple, NGC 246, is insufficient to investigate the shaping role of triple nuclei, but one straight-forward way to identify more triples is to search for binaries in nuclei with known visual companions. Here we report on the SALT HRS discovery of a 4.81 d orbital period in the CSPN of Sp 3 which has a visual companion 0.31" away. The spectroscopic distance of the visual companion agrees with distance estimates to the nebula, the GAIA DR2 parallax of the central star, and the gravity distance of the central star. This supports a physical association between the visual companion and the 4.81 d binary, making the nucleus of Sp 3 a likely triple. We determine $T_\mathrm{eff}=68^{+12}_{-6}$ kK, $\log g=4.6\pm0.2$ cm s$^{-2}$ and $v_\mathrm{rot}=80\pm20$ km s$^{-1}$ for the primary from NLTE model atmosphere analysis. The peculiar nebula presents an apparent bipolar morphology, jets and an unexpected `extreme' oxygen abundance discrepancy factor (adf) of 24.6$^{+4.1}_{-3.4}$. The adf is inconsistent with the purported trend for longer orbital period post-CE PNe to exhibit normal adfs, further highlighting selection effects in post-CE PNe. The Type-I nebular abundances of Sp 3, whose origin is often tied to more massive progenitors, are incongruous with the likely Galactic Thick Disk membership of Sp 3, possibly suggesting that rotation and binarity may play an important role in the AGB nucleosynthesis of PNe. The Chandra X-ray Observatory has detected relatively hard X-ray emission from the central stars of several planetary nebulae (PNe). A subset has no known late-type companions, making it very difficult to isolate which of several competing mechanisms may be producing the X-ray emission. The central star of NGC 2392 is one of the most vexing members, with substantial indirect evidence for a hot white dwarf (WD) companion. Here we report on the results of a radial velocity (RV) monitoring campaign of its central star with the HERMES échelle spectrograph of the Flemish 1.2 m Mercator telescope. We discover a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 1.902208 ± 0.000013 d and an RV semi-amplitude of 9.96 ± 0.13 km s -1 .The high degree of nebula ionisation requires a WD companion (M ≳ 3 0.6M o ), which the mass-function supports at orbital inclinations ‰2 7°, in agreement with the nebula orientation of 9°. The hard component of the X-ray spectrum may be explained by the companion accreting mass from the wind of the Roche lobe filling primary, while the softer component may be due to colliding winds. A companion with a stronger wind than the primary could produce the latter and would be consistent with models of the observed diffuse X-ray emission detected in the nebula. The diffuse X-rays may also be powered by the jets of up to 180 km s -1 ,and active accretion would imply that they may be the first active jets of a post-common-envelope PN, potentially making NGC 2392 an invaluable laboratory to study jet formation physics. The 1.9 d orbital period rules out a double-degenerate merger leading to a Type Ia supernova, and the weak wind of the primary likely also precludes a single-degenerate scenario. This work has made use of data from the European Space Agency Bipolar planetary nebulae (PNe) are thought to result from binary star interactions and, indeed, tens of binary central stars of PNe have been found, in particular using photometric time-series that allow for the detection of post-common envelope systems. Using photometry at the NTT in La Silla we have studied the bright object close to the centre of PN M 3-2 and found it to be an eclipsing binary with an orbital period of 1.88 days. However, the components of the binary appear to be two A or F stars, of almost equal mass, and are therefore too cold to be the source of ionisation of the nebula. Using deep images of the central star obtained in good seeing conditions, we confirm a previous result that the central star is more likely much fainter, located 2″ away from the bright star. The eclipsing binary is thus a chance alignment on top of the planetary nebula. We present the discovery of a 3h5m orbital-period binary star at the heart of the planetary nebula M 3-1 - the shortest period photometrically-variable central star known and second only to V458 Vul, in general. Combined modelling of light and radial velocity curves reveals both components to be close to Roche-lobe-filling, strongly indicating that the central star will rapidly evolve to become a cataclysmic variable, perhaps experiencing a similar evolution to V458 Vul resulting in a nova eruption before the planetary nebula has fully dissipated. While the short orbital period and near Roche-lobe filling natures of both components make the central binary of M 3-1 an important test case with which to constrain the formation processes of cataclysmic variables, novae and perhaps even supernovae type Ia., Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters. 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 pages supplementary information

SALT is a 10-m class optical telescope located in Sutherland, South Africa, owned by an international consortium and operated in fully queue-scheduled mode by the South African Astronomical Observatory. Since the start of its science operations in late 2011 and particularly since the start of its integrated operations, all the key metrics have continued to increase at a significant pace, breaking records nearly every semester: program completion, completion levels per priority, number of observed blocks, and publications. In this paper we present an update of all of our performance metrics and the strategic changes that have been and are taking place, in line with the new Strategic Plan for SALT and the SAAO.

The shaping of various morphological features of planetary nebulae (PNe) is increasingly linked to the role of binary central stars. Identifying a binary within a PN offers a powerful tool with which to directly investigate the formation mechanisms behind these features. The Etched Hourglass Nebula, MyCn 18, is the archetype for several binary-linked morphological features, yet it has no identified binary nucleus. It has the fastest jets seen in a PN of 630 km s$^{-1}$, a central star position offset from the nebula centre, and a bipolar nebula with a very narrow waist. Here we report on the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) detection of radial velocity variability in the nucleus of MyCn 18 with an orbital period of $18.15\pm0.04$ days and a semi-amplitude of $11.0\pm0.3$ km s$^{-1}$. Adopting an orbital inclination of $38\pm5$ deg and a primary mass of $0.6\pm0.1$ $M_\odot$ yields a secondary mass of $0.19\pm0.05$ $M_\odot$ corresponding to an M5V companion. The detached nature of the binary rules out a classical nova (CN) as the origin of the jets or the offset central star as hypothesised in the literature. Furthermore, scenarios that produce the offset central star during the AGB and that form narrow waist bipolar nebulae result in orbital separations 80--800 times larger than observed in MyCn 18. The inner hourglass and jets may have formed from part of the common envelope ejecta that remained bound to the binary system in a circumbinary disk, whereas the offset central star position may best be explained by proper motion. Detailed simulations of MyCn 18 are encouraged that are compatible with the binary nucleus to further investigate its complex formation history., 13 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables. We introduce the first results from an ongoing, systematic survey for new symbiotic stars selected from the AAO/UKST SuperCOSMOS H$\alpha$ Survey (SHS). The survey aims to identify and characterise the fainter population of symbiotic stars underrepresented in extant catalogues. The accreting white dwarfs (WDs) in symbiotic stars, fuelled by their red giant donors with high mass loss rate winds, make them promising candidates for type Ia supernovae. Several candidates were observed spectroscopically with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). A total of 12 bona-fide and 3 possible symbiotic stars were identified. The most remarkable example is a rare carbon-rich symbiotic star that displays coronal [Fe X] $\lambda$6375 emission, suggesting it may be a supersoft X-ray source with a massive WD. Several other emission line objects with near-infrared colours similar to symbiotic stars are listed in an appendix, including 6 B[e] stars, 4 planetary nebulae (PNe), 2 possible Be stars, one [WC9] Wolf-Rayet (WR) central star of a PN and one WC9 WR star. Carbon stars (with C/O> 1) were long assumed to all be giants, because only AGB stars dredge up significant carbon into their atmospheres. The case is nearly iron-clad now that the formerly mysterious dwarf carbon (dC) stars are actually far more common than C giants, and have accreted carbon-rich material from a former AGB companion, yielding a white dwarf and a dC star that has gained both significant mass and angular momentum. Some such dC systems have undergone a planetary nebula phase, and some may evolve to become CH, CEMP, or Ba giants. Recent studies indicate that most dCs are likely from older, metal-poor kinematic populations. Given the well-known anti-correlation of age and activity, dCs would not be expected to show significant X-ray emission related to coronal activity. However, accretion spin-up might be expected to rejuvenate magnetic dynamos in these post mass-transfer binary systems. We describe our Chandra pilot study of six dCs selected from the SDSS for Halpha emission and/or a hot white dwarf companion, to test whether their X-ray emission strength and spectral properties are consistent with a rejuvenated dynamo. We detect all 6 dCs in the sample, which have X-ray luminosities ranging from logLx= 28.5 - 29.7, preliminary evidence that dCs may be active at a level consistent with stars that have short rotation periods of several days or less. More definitive results require a sample of typical dCs with deeper X-ray observations to better constrain their plasma temperatures., 13 pages, 5 figures. Symbiotic stars are interacting binaries with the longest orbital periods and their multi-component structure makes them rich astrophysical laboratories. The accretion of a high mass loss rate red giant wind on to a white dwarf (WD) makes them promising Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) progenitors. Systematic surveys for new Galactic symbiotic stars are critical to identify new promising SNe Ia progenitors (e.g. RS Oph) and to better estimate the total population size to compare against SNe Ia rates. Central to the latter objective is building a complete census of symbiotic stars towards the Galactic Bulge. Here we report on the results of a systematic survey of Halpha emission line stars covering 35 deg^2. It is distinguished by the combination of deep optical spectroscopy and long-term lightcurves that improve the certainty of our classifications. A total of 20 bona-fide symbiotic stars are found (13 S-types, 6 D-types and 1 D'-type), 35% of which show the symbiotic specific Raman-scattered OVI emission bands, as well as 15 possible symbiotic stars that require further study (6 S-types and 9 D-types). Lightcurves show a diverse range of variability including stellar pulsations (semi-regular and Mira), orbital variations and slow changes due to dust. Orbital periods are determined for 5 S-types and pulsation periods for 3 D-types. The most significant D-type found is H1-45 and its carbon Mira with a pulsation period of 408.6 days, corresponding to a distance of ~6.2+-1.4 kpc and M_K=-8.06+-0.12 mag. If H1-45 belongs to the Galactic Bulge, then it would be the first bona-fide luminous Galactic Bulge carbon star. The lack of luminous carbon stars in the Bulge is a longstanding unsolved problem. A possible explanation for H1-45 may be that the carbon enhancement was accreted from the progenitor of the WD companion. A wide variety of unusual emission line stars were also identified. The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) currently hosts around 23 high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) of which most are Be/X-ray binaries. The LMC XMM–Newton survey provided follow-up observations of previously known X-ray sources that were likely HMXBs, as well as identifying new HMXB candidates. In total, 19 candidate HMXBs were selected based on their X-ray hardness ratios. In this paper we present red and blue optical spectroscopy, obtained with Southern African Large Telescope and the South African Astronomical Observatory 1.9-m telescope, plus a timing analysis of the long-term optical light curves from OGLE to confirm the nature of these candidates. We find that nine of the candidates are new Be/X-ray binaries, substantially increasing the LMC Be/X-ray binary population. Furthermore, we present the optical properties of these new systems, both individually and as a group of all the BeXBs identified by the XMM–Newton survey of the LMC.

We report on the first multi-color precision light curve of the bright Wolf-Rayet binary $\gamma^2$ Velorum, obtained over six months with the nanosatellites in the BRITE- Constellation fleet. In parallel, we obtained 488 high-resolution optical spectra of the system. In this first report on the datasets, we revise the spectroscopic orbit and report on the bulk properties of the colliding winds. We find a dependence of both the light curve and excess emission properties that scales with the inverse of the binary separation. When analyzing the spectroscopic properties in combination with the photometry, we find that the phase dependence is caused only by excess emission in the lines, and not from a changing continuum. We also detect a narrow, high-velocity absorption component from the He I $\lambda$5876 transition, which appears twice in the orbit. We calculate smoothed-particle hydrodynamical simulations of the colliding winds and can accurately associate the absorption from He I to the leading and trailing arms of the wind shock cone passing tangentially through our line of sight. The simulations also explain the general strength and kinematics of the emission excess observed in wind lines such as C III $\lambda$5696 of the system. SALT, the Southern African Large Telescope, is a very cost effective 10 m class telescope. The operations cost per refereed science paper is currently approximately $70,000. To achieve this competitive advantage, specific design tradeoffs had to be made leading to technical constraints. On the other hand, the telescope has many advantages, such as being able to rapidly switch between different instruments and observing modes during the night. We provide details of the technical and operational constraints and how they were dealt with, by applying the theory of constraints, to substantially improve the observation throughput during the last semester.

SALT is a 10-m class optical telescope located in Sutherland, South Africa. We present an update on all observatory performance metrics since the start of full science operations in late 2011, as well as key statistics describing the science efficiency and output of SALT, including the completion fractions of observations per priority class, and analysis of the more than 140 refereed papers to date. After addressing technical challenges and streamlining operations, these first years of full operations at SALT have seen good and consistently increasing rates of completion of high priority observations and, in particular, very cost-effective production of science publications.

The formation of collimated outflows or jets in planetary nebulae (PNe) is not well understood. There is no evidence for active accretion disks in PNe making it difficult to decide which of several proposed jet formation scenarios may be correct. A handful of wide binary central stars of PNe are known to have accreted carbon and slow neutron capture (s-process) enhanced material, the immediate progenitors of barium stars, however no close binary analogues are known to have passed through a common-envelope (CE) phase. Here we present spectroscopy of The Necklace taken near lightcurve minimum that for the first time reveals a carbon-rich (C/O > 1) companion, a carbon dwarf, in a post-CE central star. As unevolved stars do not produce carbon, the chemical enhancement of the secondary can only be explained by accretion from the primary. Accretion most likely happened prior to the CE phase via wind accretion as not enough material can be accreted during the short CE phase. The pair of jets in The Necklace, which are observed to be older than the PN, are therefore likely to have been launched from an accretion disk around the companion during this early accretion phase. This discovery adds significant weight to the emerging scenario that jets in post-CE PNe are primarily launched by an accretion disk around a main-sequence companion before the CE phase., 5 pages, 1 figure. We report on the serendipitous discovery of the first central star of a planetary nebula (PN) that mimics the helium- and nitrogen-rich WN sequence of massive Wolf–Rayet (WR) stars. The central star of IC 4663 (PN G346.2−08.2) is dominated by broad He II and N V emission lines which correspond to a [WN3] spectral type. Unlike previous [WN] candidates, the surrounding nebula is unambiguously a PN. At an assumed distance of 3.5 kpc, corresponding to a stellar luminosity of 4000 L⊙, the V= 16.9 mag central star remains 4–6 mag fainter than the average luminosity of massive WN3 stars even out to an improbable d= 8 kpc. The nebula is typical of PNe with an elliptical morphology, a newly discovered asymptotic giant branch (AGB) halo, a relatively low expansion velocity (vexp= 30 km s−1) and a highly ionized spectrum with an approximately solar chemical abundance pattern. The [WN3] star is hot enough to show Ne VII emission (T*= 140 ± 20 kK) and exhibits a fast wind (v∞= 1900 km s−1), which at d= 3.5 kpc would yield a clumped mass-loss rate of forumla= 1.8 × 10−8 M⊙ yr−1 with a small stellar radius (R*= 0.11 R⊙). Abell 70 (PN G038.1-25.4, hereafter A 70) is a planetary nebula (PN) known for its diamond ring appearance due a superposition with a background galaxy. The previously unstudied central star is found to be a binary consisting of a G8IV-V secondary at optical wavelengths and a hot white dwarf (WD) at UV wavelengths. The secondary shows Ba II and Sr II features enhanced for its spectral type that, combined with the chromospheric Halpha emission and possible 20-30 km/s radial velocity amplitude, firmly classifies the binary as a Barium star. The proposed origin of Barium stars is intimately linked to PNe whereby wind accretion pollutes the companion with dredged-up material rich in carbon and s-process elements when the primary is experiencing thermal pulses on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB). A 70 provides further evidence for this scenario together with the other very few examples of Barium central stars. The nebula is found to have Type-I chemical abundances with helium and nitrogen enrichment, which when combined with future abundance studies of the central star, will establish A 70 as a unique laboratory for studying s-process AGB nucleosynthesis. We also discuss guidelines to discover more binary central stars with cool secondaries in large orbits that are required to balance our knowledge of binarity in PNe against the currently better studied post common-envelope binary central stars.

Over the last decade Galactic planetary nebula discoveries have entered a golden age due to the emergence of high sensitivity, high resolution narrow-band surveys of the Galactic plane. These have been coupled with access to complimentary, deep, multi-wavelength surveys across near-IR, mid-IR and radio regimes in particular from both ground-based and space-based telescopes. These have provided powerful diagnostic and discovery capabilities. In this review these advances are put in the context of what has gone before, what we are uncovering now and through the window of opportunity that awaits in the future. The astrophysical potential of this brief but key phase of late stage stellar evolution is finally being realised., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Binary central stars have long been invoked to explain the vexing shapes of planetary nebulae (PNe) despite there being scant direct evidence to support this hypothesis. Modern large-scale surveys and improved observing strategies have allowed us to significantly boost the number of known close binary central stars and estimate at least 20% of PNe have close binary nuclei that passed through a common-envelope (CE) phase. The larger sample of post-CE nebulae appears to have a high proportion of bipolar nebulae, low-ionisation structures (especially in SN1987A-like rings) and polar outflows or jets. These trends are guiding our target selection in ongoing multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric surveys for new binaries. Multiple new discoveries are being uncovered that further strengthen the connection between post-CE trends and close binaries. These ongoing surveys also have wider implications for understanding CE evolution, low-ionisation structure and jet formation, spectral classification of central stars, asymptotic giant branch (AGB) nucleosynthesis and dust obscuration events in PNe., Comment: To appear in IAU Symposium 283: Planetary Nebulae, an Eye to the Future. 4 pages, 1 figure

We present spectra of 32 previously unpublished confirmed and candidate Wolf-Rayet ([WR]) and weak emission-line (WELS) central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe). Eighteen stars have been discovered in the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H-Alpha (MASH) PN survey sample, and we have also uncovered 14 confirmed and candidate [WR]s and WELS among the CSPNe of previously known PNe. Spectral classifications have been undertaken using both the Acker & Neiner and Crowther, De Marco & Barlow schemes. Twenty-two members in this sample are identified as probable [WR]s; the remaining 10 appear to be WELS. Observations undertaken as part of the MASH spectroscopic survey have now increased the number of known [WR]s by ~30 per cent. This will permit a better analysis of [WR] subclass distribution, metallicity effects, and evolutionary sequences in these uncommon objects.

We present [OIII]{\lambda}5007 fluxes and angular diameters for 435 Planetary Nebulae (PN) in the central 10' x 10' region towards the Galactic bulge. Our sample is taken from the new discoveries of the MASH PN surveys as well as previously known PN. This sample accounts for 80% of known PN in this region. Fluxes and diameters are measured from narrow-band imaging with the MOSAIC-II camera on the 4-m Blanco telescope at the Cerro-Tololo Inter-American Observatory. This is the largest (~60 square degrees), uniform [OIII]{\lambda}5007 survey of the inner Galactic bulge ever undertaken. 104 of the objects have measured [OIII]{\lambda}5007, [OIII]{\lambda}4959, H{\alpha} or H{\beta} fluxes from the literature, which we use to undertake a detailed comparison to demonstrate the integrity of our new fluxes. Our independent measurements are in excellent agreement with the very best literature sources over two orders of magnitude, while maintaining good consistency over five orders of magnitude. The excellent resolution and sensitivity of our data allows not only for a robust set of homogenous PN fluxes, but provides greater detail into their intricate, otherwise undetermined [OIII]{\lambda}5007 morphologies. These new, extensive measurements significantly increase the sample of reliable [OIII]{\lambda}5007 fluxes for Galactic bulge PN making it a valuable resource and a prelude to the construction of our new Galactic bulge Planetary Nebula luminosity function (Paper II).

We present a detailed study of a bipolar, possible Type I planetary nebula (PN), PHR1315-6555 (PN G305.3-03.1), that was discovered as part of the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H-alpha planetary nebula project (MASH) and that we considered at the time was an excellent candidate for membership of the distant, compact, intermediate-age open cluster, ESO 96-SC04. The strong evidence for this association is presented here making this the only known example of a PN physically associated with a Galactic open cluster. Cluster membership is extremely important as it allows for very precise estimates of the fundamental properties of the PN as the cluster is at a known distance. The PN was discovered by one of us (QAP) during systematic MASH searches for new Galactic PNe of the AAO/UKST H-alpha survey and had been missed in earlier broadband surveys, including specific CCD studies of the host cluster. We present original discovery images and CTIO 4m MOSAIC-II camera follow-up narrow-band images that reveal its bipolar morphology. We also present: (i) low-resolution optical spectra that spectroscopically confirm the PN; (ii) accurate radial velocities of the PN and cluster stars from high resolution spectroscopy which show they are consistent; and (iii) a reliable, independent distance estimate to the PN using a robust PN distance indicator which agrees with the published cluster distance to within the errors. We also provide preliminary estimates of basic PN properties and abundance estimates from deeper spectra that show it to be of possible Type I chemistry. This is also consistent its estimated turn-off mass. Taken together these findings present a powerful case for clear physical association between the PN and host cluster. Results for this association will be of considerable interest to specialists across differing astrophysical disciplines, including PNe, white dwarfs, and open clusters.

We uniformly analyze 136 optically detected PNe and candidates from the GLIMPSE-I survey in order to to develop robust, multi-wavelength, classification criteria to augment existing diagnostics and provide pure PN samples. PNe represent powerful astrophysical probes. They are important dynamical tracers, key sources of ISM chemical enrichment, windows into late stellar evolution, and potent cosmological yardsticks. But their utility depends on separating them unequivocally from the many nebular mimics which can strongly resemble bona fide PNe in traditional optical images and spectra. We merge new PNe from the carefully evaluated, homogeneous MASH-I and MASH-II surveys, which offer a wider evolutionary range of PNe than hitherto available, with previously known PNe classified by SIMBAD. Mid-infrared (MIR) measurements vitally complement optical data because they reveal other physical processes and morphologies via fine-structure lines, molecular bands and dust. MIR colour-colour planes, optical emission line ratios and radio fluxes show the unambiguous classification of PNe to be complex, requiring all available evidence. Statistical trends provide predictive value and we offer quantitative MIR criteria to determine whether an emission nebula is most likely to be a PN or one of the frequent contaminants such as compact HII regions or symbiotic systems. Prerequisites have been optical images and spectra but MIR morphology, colours, environment and a candidate's MIR/radio flux ratio provide a more rigorous classification. Our ultimate goal is to recognize PNe using only MIR and radio characteristics, enabling us to trawl for PNe effectively even in heavily obscured regions of the Galaxy.

We report on the discovery of ETHOS 1 (PN G068.1+11.0), the first spectroscopically confirmed planetary nebula (PN) from a survey of the SuperCOSMOS Science Archive for high-latitude PNe. ETHOS 1 stands out as one of the few PNe to have both polar outflows (jets) travelling at $120\pm10$ km/s and a close binary central star. The lightcurve observed with the Mercator telescope reveals an orbital period of 0.535 days and an extremely large amplitude (0.816 mag) due to irradiation of the companion by a very hot pre-white dwarf. ETHOS 1 further strengthens the long suspected link between binary central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPN) and jets. INT IDS and VLT FORS spectroscopy of the CSPN reveals weak N III, C III and C IV emission lines seen in other close binary CSPN and suggests many CSPN with these weak emission lines are misclassified close binaries. We present VLT FORS imaging and Manchester Echelle Spectrometer long slit observations from which a kinematic model of the nebula is built. An unusual combination of bipolar outflows and a spherical nebula conspire to produce an $X$-shaped appearance. The kinematic age of the jets ($1750\pm250$ yrs/kpc) are found to be older than the inner nebula ($900\pm100$ yrs/kpc) consistent with previous studies of similar PNe. Emission line ratios of the jets are found to be consistent with reverse-shock models for fast low-ionisation emitting regions (FLIERS) in PNe. Further large-scale surveys for close binary CSPN will be required to securely establish whether FLIERS are launched by close binaries.

IPHASXJ194359.5+170901 is a new high-excitation planetary nebula with remarkable characteristics. It consists of a knotty ring expanding at a speed of 28 km/s, and a fast collimated outflow in the form of faint lobes and caps along the direction perpendicular to the ring. The expansion speed of the polar caps is 100 km/s, and their kinematical age is twice as large as the age of the ring. Time-resolved photometry of the central star of IPHASXJ194359.5+170901 reveals a sinusoidal modulation with a period of 1.16 days. This is interpreted as evidence for binarity of the central star, the brightness variations being related to the orbital motion of an irradiated companion. This is supported by the spectrum of the central star in the visible range, which appears to be dominated by emission from the irradiated zone, consisting of a warm (6000-7000 K) continuum, narrow C III, C IV, and N III emission lines, and broader lines from a flat H I Balmer sequence in emission. IPHASXJ194359.5+170901 helps to clarify the role of (close) binaries in the formation and shaping of planetary nebulae. The output of the common-envelope evolution of the system is a strongly flattened circumstellar mass deposition, a feature that seems to be distinctive of this kind of binary system. Also, IPHASXJ194359.5+170901 is among the first post-CE PNe for which the existence of a high-velocity polar outflow has been demonstrated. Its kinematical age might indicate that the polar outflow is formed before the common-envelope phase. This points to mass transfer onto the secondary as the origin, but alternative explanations are also considered.

V341 Arae is a 10th-magnitude variable star in the southern hemisphere, discovered over a century ago by Henrietta Leavitt but relatively little studied since then. Although historically considered to be a Cepheid, it is actually blue and coincides with an X-ray source. The star lies near the edge of the large, faint Halpha nebula Fr 2-11, discovered by D. Frew, who showed that V341 Ara is actually a cataclysmic variable (CV). His deep imaging of the nebula revealed a bow-shock morphology in the immediate vicinity of the star. We have carried out spectroscopic monitoring of V341 Ara, and we confirm that it is a nova-like CV, with an orbital period of 0.15216 days (3.652 hr). We show that V341 Ara is remarkably similar to the previously known BZ Cam, a nova-like CV with a nearly identical orbital period, associated with the bow-shock nebula EGB 4. Archival sky-survey photometry shows that V341 Ara normally varies between V ~ 10.5 and 11, with a characteristic timescale ranging from about 10 to 16 days. V341 Ara lies well off-center within Fr 2-11. We speculate either that the star is undergoing a chance high-speed encounter with a small interstellar cloud, or that the nebula was ejected from the star itself in a nova outburst in the fairly distant past. At a distance of only 156 pc, V341 Ara is one of the nearest and brightest known nova-like variables, and we encourage further studies., Submitted to Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific

Considerable effort has been applied towards understanding the precise shaping mechanisms responsible for the diverse range of morphologies exhibited by planetary nebulae (PNe). A binary companion is increasingly gaining support as a dominant shaping mechanism, however morphological studies of the few PNe that we know for certain were shaped by binary evolution are scarce or biased. Newly discovered binary central stars (CSPN) from the OGLE-III photometric variability survey have significantly increased the sample of post common-envelope (CE) nebulae available for morphological analysis. We present Gemini South narrow-band images for most of the new sample to complement existing data in a qualitative morphological study of 30 post-CE nebulae. Nearly 30% of nebulae have canonical bipolar morphologies, however this rises to 60% once inclination effects are incorporated with the aid of geometric models. This is the strongest observational evidence yet linking CE evolution to bipolar morphologies. A higher than average proportion of the sample shows low-ionisation knots, filaments or jets suggestive of a binary origin. These features are also common around emission-line nuclei which may be explained by speculative binary formation scenarios for H-deficient CSPN., Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a supplement to the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg H$\alpha$ planetary nebulae (PNe) catalogue (MASH), which we denote MASH-II. The supplement consists of over 300 true, likely and possible new Galactic PNe found after re-examination of the entire AAO/UKST H$\alpha$ survey of the southern Galactic Plane in digital form. We have spectroscopically confirmed over 240 of these new candidates as bona-fide PNe and we include other high quality candidates awaiting spectroscopic confirmation as possible PNe. These latest discoveries largely comprise two distinct groups: small, star-like or moderately resolved PNe at one end and mostly large, extremely low surface brightness PNe at the other. Neither group were easy to discover from simple visual scrutiny of the original survey exposures as for MASH but were relatively straightforward to uncover from the digital images via application of semi-automated discovery techniques. We suspect the few PNe still hidden in the H$\alpha$ survey will lie outside our search criteria or be difficult to find.

We report on the discovery of an eclipsing dwarf nova (DN) inside the peculiar, bilobed nebula Te 11. Modelling of high-speed photometry of the eclipse finds the accreting white dwarf to have a mass 1.18 M$_\odot$ and temperature 13 kK. The donor spectral type of M2.5 results in a distance of 330 pc, colocated with Barnard's loop at the edge of the Orion-Eridanus superbubble. The perplexing morphology and observed bow shock of the slowly-expanding nebula may be explained by strong interactions with the dense interstellar medium in this region. We match the DN to the historic nova of 483 CE in Orion and postulate that the nebula is the remnant of this eruption. This connection supports the millennia time scale of the post-nova transition from high to low mass-transfer rates. Over a hundred planetary nebulae (PNe) are known to have H-deficient central stars that mimic the spectroscopic appearance of massive Wolf-Rayet stars. The formation of these low-mass Wolf-Rayet stars, denoted [WR] stars, remains poorly understood. While several binary formation scenarios have been proposed, there are too few [WR] binaries known to determine their feasibility. Out of nearly 50 post-common-envelope (post-CE) binary central stars known, only PN G222.8$-$04.2 ([WC7], $P=1.26$ d) and NGC 5189 ([WO1], $P=4.05$ d) have a [WR] component. The available data suggests that post-CE central stars with [WR] components lack main sequence companions and have a wider orbital separation than typical post-CE binaries. We present a study of Hen 2-155 and Hen 2-161, two planetary nebulae which bear striking morphological similarities to other planetary nebulae known to host close-binary central stars. Both central stars are revealed to be photometric variables while spectroscopic observations confirm that Hen 2-155 is host to a double-eclipsing, post-common-envelope system with an orbital period of 3h33m making it one of the shortest period binary central stars known. The observations of Hen 2-161 are found to be consistent with a post-common-envelope binary of period ~1 day. A detailed model of central star of Hen 2-155, is produced, showing the nebular progenitor to be a hot, post-AGB remnant of approximately 0.62 Msol, consistent with the age of the nebula, and the secondary star to be an M dwarf whose radius is almost twice the expected ZAMS radius for its mass. In spite of the small numbers, all main-sequence companions, of planetary nebulae central stars, to have had their masses and radii constrained by both photometric and spectroscopic observations have also been found to display this "inflation". The cause of the "inflation" is uncertain but is probably related to rapid accretion, immediately before the recent common-envelope phase, to which the star has not yet thermally adjusted. The chemical composition of both nebulae is also analysed, showing both to display elevated abundance discrepancy factors. We present an analysis of multi-epoch low-resolution spectrophotometry, complemented by the light curves provided by massive photometric surveys spanning over 100 years, of the symbiotic binary LMC S63. We showed that it is an eclipsing binary with the orbital period of 1050d. We also found evidence of outbursts in history of the white dwarf. If it was a Z-And type outburst, as is most likely, it would be a second such outburst recorded in the Magellanic Cloud symbiotic system. We confirmed that the red giant is enhanced in carbon, and estimated C/O~1.2 by fitting a model atmosphere to the SALT spectrum. We present the Macquarie/AAO/Strasbourg Hα Planetary Nebula Catalogue (MASH) of over 900 true, likely and possible new Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) discovered from the AAO/UKST Hα survey of the southern Galactic plane. The combination of depth, resolution, uniformity and areal coverage of the Hα survey has opened up a hitherto unexplored region of parameter space permitting the detection of this significant new PN sample. Away from the Galactic bulge the new PNe are typically more evolved, of larger angular extent, of lower surface brightness and more obscured (i.e. extinguished) than those in most previous surveys. We have also doubled the number of PNe in the Galactic bulge itself and although most are compact, we have also found more evolved examples. The MASH catalogue represents the culmination of a seven-year programme of identification and confirmatory spectroscopy. A key strength is that the entire sample has been derived from the same, uniform observational data. The 60 per cent increase in known Galactic PNe represents the largest ever incremental sample of such discoveries and will have a significant impact on many aspects of PN research. This is especially important for studies at the faint end of the PN luminosity function which was previously poorly represented.
