Abstract

Analyzing DISTO data of $pp -> p Lambda K^+$ at $T_p = 2.50$ and 2.85 GeV to populate a previously reported X(2265) resonance with $M_X = 2267$ MeV/$c^2$ and $Gamma_X = 118$ MeV at 2.85 GeV, we found that the production of X(2265) at 2.50 GeV is much less than that at 2.85 GeV (less than 10%), though it is expected from a kinematical consideration to be produced as much as 33% of that at 2.85 GeV. The small population of X(2265) at 2.50 GeV is consistent with the very weak production of Lambda (1405) at the same incident energy toward its production threshold, thus indicating that Lambda (1405) plays an important role as a doorway state for the formation of X(2265)., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We have analyzed data of the DISTO experiment on the exclusive pp -> p Lambda K+ reaction at 2.85 GeV to search for a strongly bound compact K-pp (= X) state to be formed in the pp -> K+ + X reaction. The observed spectra of the K+ missing-mass and the p Lambda invariant-mass with high transverse momenta of p and K+ revealed a broad distinct peak with a mass M_X = 2265 +- 2 (stat) +- 5 (syst) MeV/c2 and a width Gamma_X = 118 +- 8 (stat) +- 10 (syst) MeV., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The data from the DISTO Collaboration on the exclusive pp -> p K+ Lambda production acquired at T_p = 2.85 GeV have been re-analysed in order to search for a deeply bound K- pp (= X) state, to be formed in the binary process pp -> K+ X. The preliminary spectra of the DeltaM_{K+} missing-mass and of the M_{p Lambda} invariant-mass show, for large transverse-momenta of protons and kaons, a distinct broad peak with a mass M_X = 2265 +- 2 MeV/c^2 and a width Gamma_X = 118 +- 8 MeV/c^2., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

Total and differential cross sections for the exclusive reaction pp->pp rho^0 observed via the pi+pi- decay channel have been measured at beam momentum=3.67 GeV/c. The observed total meson production cross section is determined to be 23.4 +- 0.8 +-8 microb and is significantly lower than typical cross sections used in model calculations for heavy ion collisions. Abstract

The exclusive production cross sections for $\omega$ and $\phi$ mesons have been measured in proton-proton reactions at $p_{lab}=3.67$ GeV/c. The observed $\phi/\omega$ cross section ratio is $(3.8\pm0.2^{+1.2}_{-0.9})\times 10^{-3}$. After phase space corrections, this ratio is enhanced by about an order of magnitude relative to naive predictions based upon the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule, in comparison to an enhancement by a factor $\sim 3$ previously observed at higher beam momenta. The modest increase of this enhancement near the production threshold is compared to the much larger increase of the $\phi/\omega$ ratio observed in specific channels of $\bar pp$ annihilation experiments. Furthermore, differential cross section results are also presented which indicate that although the $\phi$ meson is predominantly produced from a $^3P_1$ proton-proton entrance channel, other partial waves contribute significantly to the production mechanism at this beam momentum., Comment: Revtex 49 pages, 11 figures, Phys Rev C in print

Abstract

The ratio of the total exclusive production cross sections for $\eta\prime$ and $\eta$ mesons has been measured in the $pp$ reaction at $p_{beam}=3.67$ GeV/c. The observed $\eta\prime/\eta$ ratio is $(0.83\pm{0.11}^{+0.23}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-2}$ from which the exclusive $\eta\prime$ meson production cross section is determined to be $(1.12\pm{0.15}^{+0.42}_{-0.31})\mu b$. Abstract

The total cross section of the reaction $pp\to ppK^+K^-$ has been determined for proton--proton reactions with $p_{beam}=3.67 GeV/c$. This represents the first cross section measurement of the $pp \to ppK^-K^+$ channel near threshold, and is equivalent to the inclusive $pp\to ppK^-X$ cross section at this beam momentum. The cross section determined at this beam momentum is about a factor 20 lower than that for inclusive $pp\to ppK^+X$ meson production at the same CM energy above the corresponding threshold. This large difference in the $K^+$ and $K^-$ meson inclusive production cross sections in proton-proton reactions is in strong contrast to cross sections measured in sub-threshold heavy ion collisions, which are similar in magnitude at the same energy per nucleon below the respective thresholds., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures Phys. Abstract

We report the first polarization transfer measurements for exclusive hyperon production reactions. The normal spin transfer coefficient DNN for pp -> p K+ Lambda is large and negative for forward Lambda production at a beam momentum of 3.67 GeV/c, a result qualitatively consistent with expectations for a mechanism dominated by kaon-exchange and rescattering. Abstract

The DISTO collaboration has built a large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer designed to provide broad kinematic coverage of multiparticle final states produced in pp scattering. The spectrometer has been installed in the polarized proton beam of the Saturne accelerator in Saclay to study polarization observables in the [Mathematical Expression Omitted] reaction and vector meson production ([Phi], [Omega] and [Rho]) in pp collisions. The data acquisition system is based on a VME 68030 CPU running the OS/9 operating system, housed in a single VME crate together with the CAMAC interface, the triple port ECL memories, and four RISC R3000 CPU. The digitization of signals from the detectors is made by PCOS III and FERA front-end electronics. Data of several events belonging to a single Saturne extraction are stored in VME triple-port ECL memories using a hardwired fast sequencer. The buffer, optionally filtered by the RISC R3000 CPU, is recorded on a DLT cassette by DAQ CPU using the on-board SCSI interface during the acceleration cycle. Two UNIX workstations are connected to the VME CPUs through a fast parallel bus and the Local Area Network. They analyze a subset of events for on-line monitoring. The data acquisition system is able to read and record 3500 ev/burst in the present configuration with a dead time of 15%.

Abstract

Abstract

With the DISTO spectrometer, exclusive η production in pp collisions have been measured at kinetic energies of T beam =2.15, 2.50 and 2.85 GeV, respectively, via the π+π-π0 decay channel. The resulting angular distributions of the η are important for the interpretation of dilepton spectra obtained in elementary as well as heavy ion reactions.

Abstract

The ratio of the total exclusive production cross sections for $\eta\prime$ and $\eta$ mesons has been measured in the $pp$ reaction at $p_{beam}=3.67$ GeV/c. The observed $\eta\prime/\eta$ ratio is $(0.83\pm{0.11}^{+0.23}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-2}$ from which the exclusive $\eta\prime$ meson production cross section is determined to be $(1.12\pm{0.15}^{+0.42}_{-0.31})\mu b$. Differential cross section distributions have been measured. Their shape is consistent with isotropic $\eta\prime$ meson production.

Abstract

The ratio of the exclusive production cross sections for φ and ω mesons has been measured in pp reactions at Tbeam=2.85GeV. The observed φ/ω ratio is (3.7±0.7−0.9+1.2)×10−3. After phase space corrections, this ratio is about a factor of 10 enhanced relative to naive predictions based upon the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka rule, in comparison to an enhancement by a factor of ∼3 previously observed at higher energies. The modest increase of this enhancement near the production threshold is compared to the much larger increase of the φ/ω ratio observed in specific channels of p¯p annihilation experiments.

Abstract

A High Acceptance DiElectron Spectrometer (HADES) has been proposed at the SIS accelerator of GSI in order to measure e + e − pairs produced in proton, meson and heavy ion induced collisions. HADES will be able to operate at the highest luminosities available at SIS in an environment of high hadron and photon background. A Ring Imaging Cerenkov Counter (RICH) serves for electron identification. Momentum measurement is achieved with a magnetic spectrometer consisting of superconducting toroidal coils and mini drift chambers for tracking. Arrays of pre-shower detectors and TOF wall are positioned behind the drift chambers for electron trigger purposes and for measuring the charged particle multiplicity. The detector features have been investigated in detailed simulations. The expected performance of the system in terms of efficiency, resolution and residual background are presented.

Abstract

We have analyzed data of the DISTO experiment on the exclusive pp{yields}p{Lambda}K{sup +} reaction at 2.85 GeV to search for a strongly bound compact K{sup -}pp({identical_to}X) state to be formed in the pp{yields}K{sup +}+X reaction. The observed spectra of the K{sup +} missing mass and the p{Lambda} invariant-mass with high transverse momenta of p and K{sup +} revealed a broad distinct peak of 26-{sigma} confidence with a mass M{sub X}=2267{+-}3(stat){+-}5(syst) MeV/c{sup 2} and a width {Gamma}{sub X}=118{+-}8(stat){+-}10(syst) MeV. The enormously large cross section indicates formation of a compact K{sup -}pp with a large binding energy of B{sub K}=103 MeV, which can be a possible gateway toward cold and dense kaonic nuclear matter.

Abstract

Differential cross sections for the exclusive reaction $\stackrel{P\vec}{p}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}pp\ensuremath{\eta}$ observed via the $\ensuremath{\eta}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ decay channel have been measured at ${T}_{\text{beam}}=2.15\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}$, $2.50\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}$, and $2.85\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{GeV}$ (excess energies $324\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$, $412\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$, and $554\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\text{MeV}$). The influence of the $N(1535){S}_{11}$ resonance is clearly seen in the invariant mass and momentum dependent differential cross sections. The extracted resonance parameters are compatible with existing data. No significant evidence for further resonance contributions has been found. In addition, angular distributions of the $pp\ensuremath{\eta}$ final state have been measured. The polar angle distribution of the $\ensuremath{\eta}$ shows an anisotropy with respect to the beam axis for the lowest beam energy, which vanishes for the higher energies. The sign of this anisotropy is negative and expected to be sensitive to the dominant production mechanism. In contrast, the proton polar angle in the $pp$ rest frame tends to be more strongly aligned along the beam axis with increasing beam energy. The analyzing power ${A}_{y}$ is compatible with zero for all beam energies.

Abstract

Angular distributions for the exclusive reaction pp → ppη observed via the π + π − π 0 decay channel have been measured at T beam = 2.15 GeV, 2.50 GeV and 2.85 GeV (excess energies Q = 324 MeV, 412 MeV and 554 MeV). The polar angle of the η shows an anisotropy with respect to the beam direction for the lowest energy, which vanishes for the higher energies. The anisotropy of the pp polar angle increases slightly with the beam energy.

Abstract

Total and differential cross sections for the exclusive reaction pp->pp rho^0 observed via the pi+pi- decay channel have been measured at beam momentum=3.67 GeV/c. The observed total meson production cross section is determined to be 23.4 +- 0.8 +-8 microb and is significantly lower than typical cross sections used in model calculations for heavy ion collisions. The differential cross sections measured indicate a strong anisotropy cos^2(theta^{CM}) in the rho^0 meson production., Comment: 3 figures, 11 pages
