Actinide-bearing intermetallics display unusual electronic, magnetic, and physical properties which arise from the complex behavior of their 5$f$ electron orbitals. Temperature ($T$) effects on actinide intermetallics are well studied, but high pressure ($P$) properties and phase stabilities are known for only a handful of compositions. Furthermore, almost no data exist for simultaneous high $P$ and high $T$. We performed ambient-$T$ diamond anvil cell X-ray diffraction experiments to study the behavior of the intermetallic U$_6$Fe upon compression up to 82 GPa. U$_6$Fe remains stable in the tetragonal $I4/mcm$ structure over this pressure range. We also performed ambient $P$, low-$T$ diffraction and heat capacity measurements to constrain U$_6$Fe's thermal behavior. These data were combined with calculations and fitted to a Mie-Gruneisen/Birch-Murnaghan thermal equation of state with the following parameter values at ambient $P$: bulk modulus $B_0$ = 124.0 GPa, pressure derivative $B'_0$ = 5.6, Gruneisen parameter $\Gamma_0$ = 2.028, volume exponent $q$ = 0.934, Debye temperature $\theta_0$ = 175 K, and unit cell volume $V_0$ = 554.4 angstrom$^3$. We report $T$-dependent thermal expansion coefficients and bond lengths of U$_6$Fe, which demonstrate the anisotropic compressibility and negative thermal expansion of the crystallographic $c$ axis. The chemical compositions of Earth's core and mantle provide insight into the processes that led to their formation. N-body simulations, on the other hand, generally do not contain chemical information, and seek to only reproduce the masses and orbits of the terrestrial planets. These simulations can be grouped into four potentially viable scenarios of Solar System formation (Classical, Annulus, Grand Tack, and Early Instability) for which we compile a total of 433 N-body simulations. We relate the outputs of these simulations to the chemistry of Earth's core and mantle using a melt-scaling law combined with a multi-stage model of core formation. We find the compositions of Earth analogs to be largely governed by the fraction of equilibrating embryo cores and the initial embryo masses in N-body simulations. Simulation type may be important when considering magma ocean lifetimes, where Grand Tack simulations have the largest amounts of material accreted after the last giant impact. However, we cannot rule out any accretion scenarios or initial embryo masses due to the sensitivity of Earth's mantle composition to different parameters and the stochastic nature of N-body simulations. Comparing the last embryo impacts experienced by Earth analogs to specific Moon-forming scenarios, we find the characteristics of the Moon-forming impact are dependent on the initial conditions in N-body simulations where larger initial embryo masses promote larger and slower Moon-forming impactors. Mars-sized initial embryos are most consistent with the canonical hit-and-run scenario onto a solid mantle. Our results suggest that constraining the fraction of equilibrating impactor core and the initial embryo masses in N-body simulations could be significant for understanding both Earth's accretion history and characteristics of the Moon-forming impact.

At the interface of Earth's upper and lower mantle, the post-spinel transition boundary controls the dynamics and morphologies of downwelling slabs and upwelling plumes, and its Clapeyron slope is hence one of the most important constraints on mantle convection. In this study, we reported a new in situ experimental dataset on phase stability in Mg$_{2}$SiO$_{4}$ at mantle transition zone pressures from laser-heated diamond anvil cell experiments, along with a compilation of corrected in situ experimental datasets from the literature. We presented a machine learning framework for high-pressure phase diagram determination and focused on its application to constrain the location and Clapeyron slope of the post-spinel transition: ringwoodite $\leftrightarrow$ bridgmanite + periclase. We found that the post-spinel boundary is nonlinear and its Clapeyron slope varies locally from $-2.3_{-1.4}^{+0.6}$ MPa/K at 1900 K, to $-1.0_{-1.7}^{+1.3}$ MPa/K at 1700 K, and to $0.0_{-2.0}^{+1.7}$ MPa/K at 1500 K. We applied the temperature-dependent post-spinel Clapeyron slope to estimate its lateral variation across the "660-km" seismic discontinuity in subducting slabs and hotspot-associated plumes worldwide, as well as the ambient mantle. We found that, in the present-day mantle, the average post spinel Clapeyron slope in the plumes is three times more negative than that in slabs, and we then discussed the effects of a nonlinear post-spinel transition on the dynamics of Earth's mantle., Comment: 42 pages, 6500 words and 5 figures in the main text, and 1 supplement with 6 texts, 5 figures, and 6 tables

Water has been stored in the Martian mantle since its formation, primarily in nominally anhydrous minerals. The short-lived early hydrosphere and intermittently flowing water on the Martian surface may have been supplied and replenished by magmatic degassing of water from the mantle. Estimating the water storage capacity of the solid Martian mantle places important constraints on its water inventory and helps elucidate the sources, sinks, and temporal variations of water on Mars. In this study, we applied a bootstrap aggregation method to investigate the effects of iron on water storage capacities in olivine, wadsleyite, and ringwoodite, based on high-pressure experimental data compiled from the literature, and we provide a quantitative estimate of the upper bound of the bulk water storage capacity in the FeO-rich solid Martian mantle. Along a series of areotherms at different mantle potential temperatures ($T_{p}$), we estimated a water storage capacity equal to $9.0_{-2.2} ^{+2.8}$ km Global Equivalent Layer (GEL) for the present-day Martian mantle at $T_{p}$ = 1600 K and $4.9_{-1.5}^{+1.7}$ km GEL for the initial Martian mantle at $T_{p}$ = 1900 K. The water storage capacity of the Martian mantle increases with secular cooling through time, but due to the lack of an efficient water recycling mechanism on Mars, its actual mantle water content may be significantly lower than its water storage capacity today., Comment: 52 pages including supplementary materials, 14 figures, 13 tables; manuscript accepted for publication in Icarus

This paper presents a method for predicting the power consumption of piezoelectric actuators utilized for active vibration control. Analytical developments and experimental tests show that the maximum power required to control a structure using surface-bonded piezoelectric actuators is independent of the dynamics between the piezoelectric actuator and the host structure. The results demonstrate that for a perfectly-controlled system, the power consumption is a function of the quantity and type of piezoelectric actuators and the voltage and frequency of the control law output signal. Furthermore, as control effectiveness decreases, the power consumption of the piezoelectric actuators decreases. In addition, experimental results revealed a non-linear behavior in the material properties of piezoelectric actuators. The material non- linearity displayed a significant increase in capacitance with an increase in excitation voltage. Tests show that if the non-linearity of the capacitance was accounted for, a conservative estimate of the power can easily be determined.
