Abstract

Some bulk properties of interstellar dust are known through infrared and X-ray observations of the interstellar medium. However, the properties of individual interstellar dust particles are largely unconstrained, so it is not known whether individual interstellar dust particles can be definitively distinguished from interplanetary dust particles in the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector (SIDC) based only on chemical, mineralogical or isotopic analyses. It was therefore understood from the beginning of the Stardust Interstellar Preliminary Examination (ISPE) that identification of interstellar dust candidates would rest on three criteria - broad consistency with known extraterrestrial materials, inconsistency with an origin as secondary ejecta from impacts on the spacecraft, and consistency, in a statistical sense, of observed dynamical properties - that is, trajectory and capture speed - with an origin in the interstellar dust stream. Here we quantitatively test four interstellar dust candidates, reported previously [1], against these criteria.

Abstract

Shock is often given as the cause for many observations in meteorites due to the assumed previous exposure of most meteorites to at least one impact event that ultimately led to their ejection from their parent body. Here we present electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) results on a substantially shocked dunitic achondrite, chassignite Northwest Africa (NWA) 8694, and question the general culpability of shock exposure for the formation of preferred orientation fabrics of meteoritic olivine crystals. Despite the ubiquitous presence of substantial shock indicators, the EBSD results for NWA 8694 reveal an absence of preferred orientation of olivine crystals, displaying instead an overall random fabric. We propose that the passage of shock waves through olivine crystals within a solid, crystalline, dunitic rock does not produce an overall preferred orientation, nor is it likely to actively form a whole‐rock random fabric but instead has likely no bearing on the formation of olivine orientation fabrics. Abstract

Seven particles captured by the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector and returned to Earth for laboratory analysis have features consistent with an origin in the contemporary interstellar dust stream. More than 50 spacecraft debris particles were also identified. The interstellar dust candidates are readily distinguished from debris impacts on the basis of elemental composition and/or impact trajectory. The seven candidate interstellar particles are diverse in elemental composition, crystal structure, and size. The presence of crystalline grains and multiple iron-bearing phases, including sulfide, in some particles indicates that individual interstellar particles diverge from any one representative model of interstellar dust inferred from astronomical observations and theory.

Abstract

Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) performed using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in combination with a windowless detector setup allows high-resolution imaging and chemical composition mapping even of light elements present in low concentrations. The used TEM-system combines a field emission electron source with four silicon drift detectors allowing for high detection sensitivity. We used this enhanced system to investigate 20 to 200 nm sized inclusions in milky diamonds from Rio Soriso, Juina area, Brazil. The diamonds act as a chemical inert container and therefore protect their inclusions from further chemical reactions with their surroundings. We visualize the presence and distribution of nitrogen within focused ion beam (FIB) slices containing these nanoinclusions. The investigation of these specific diamonds may open a new window to deeper parts of the Earth (>660 km) as they represent pristine material of this deep mantle environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: The successful probing, return and curation of asteroid Ryugu provides pristine sample material from the surface and subsurface of this C-type asteroid. The sampled material of the Hayabusa2 mission includes many coarse-grained fragments [1, 2]. In order to obtain the highest level of scientific output the initial study included several non-invasive and non-destructive analytical techniques. Synchrotron X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (SXRF-CT) [e.g. 3] is an ideal non-invasive analytical technique to achieve detailed in depth structural and chemical information and was applied to several mm-sized rock fragments of the asteroid Ryugu from both, surface and sub-surface samples. Here we present the first dataset on coarse grain C0033, collected at the second touchdown site. Methods: X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy experiments were performed at the P06 beamline of PETRA III (DESY, Hamburg, Germany) and at the ID15A beamline of the ESRF (Grenoble, France). The excitation energy E0 was 20.5 keV and 90 keV respectively, using Si(111) monochromator optics. The Kirkpatrick-Baez (KB) mirrorbased X-ray beam focusing provided a 0.2×0.24 µm² beam spot size at sample position during the P06 experiments, and a 0.5×0.5 µm² beam spot at sample position for the ID15A experiments. High-Energy SXRF: Every detailed SXRF analysis was started with a chemical 2D overview projection of the full volume of the mm-sized rock fragment. In case of sample C0033 an Fe-rich vein was identified. Several crosssection CT scans were performed during our subsequent study, one exactly at the height where the Fe-rich vein was observed. The cross section indicates the presence of REE-rich phases throughout the vein and confirms the vein-like nature of the Fe-enriched area. Lower-Energy SXRF: For further studies a polished section (~100 µm thick) of grain C0033 was prepared exactly at the height of the magnetite vein and was then further analysed at lower X-ray energy (20.5 keV) at PETRA III beamline P06. The Fe distribution found confirms the existence of a magnetite-rich vein. Ca and Y element maps indicate the presence of multiple apatite grains closely related to the vein. Quantification: The SXRF measurements not only provide element distribution maps but can also be quantified. In order to get better statistics small area maps and point analyses were performed. The resulting CI normalized trace element concentrations of magnetite and apatite grains located within the magnetite vein observed in C0033 show values close to CI bulk composition. All quantified measurements were acquired at PETRA III P06 beamline applying a primary beam energy of 20.5 keV. Discussion and Conclusion: The detailed SXRF study of mm-sized Ryugu rock fragments enabled the identification and localization of unique sample characteristics like the magnetite-apatite vein found in grain C0033. Veins crosscutting the sample material are compelling evidence for intense hydrous alteration on the parent body. The widespread occurrence of sulphate veins found in most CI chondrites was first interpreted as evidence for late stage lowtemperature alteration on the asteroid [e.g. 5], but later clear proof was found for the terrestrial formation of these features in almost all samples [6]. The study of rock samples sampled on the sub-surface of asteroid Ryugu now for the first time enables to study hydrous alteration processes without any terrestrial alteration. Our study shows compelling evidence for the existence of low temperature hydrous alteration veins on asteroid Ryugu. Surprisingly, the vein consists of a mixture of mostly magnetite with apatite, which is in contrast to the observation of carbonate veins found on the surface of asteroid Bennu [7]. 16. AGE OF ENRICHED GABBROIC SHERGOTTITE NORTHWEST AFRICA 6963 AND ITS SI-RICH MESOSTASIS.

Abstract

Introduction: The enriched shergottite Northwest Africa (NWA) 6963 has been classified as a gabbroic shergottite due to its coarse-grained groundmass-forming minerals [1,2]. Fine-grained Si-rich mesostasis occurs interstitial to the groundmass minerals [1]. Such Si-rich mesostasis is common in enriched shergotites, however, it is disputed whether the mesostasis was formed by impact [3] or by magmatic processes [1,4,5]. To our knowledge no crystallization age has so far been published for NWA 6963. We use LA-MC-ICP-MS U-Pb measurements of minerals within the Si-rich mesostasis and of late-stage magmatic merrillite within the coarse-grained groundmass to derive U-Pb ages for both, Si-rich mesostasis and coarse-grained merrillite. The ages provide a crystallization age for NWA 6963 and can be used to address the question of Si-rich mesostasis formation. Methods: Isotope analyses were performed at the Frankfurt Isotope and Element Research Center (FIERCE). We used a Thermo Scientific Neptune Plus multi collector ICP-MS, coupled to a RESOlution 193nm ArF Excimer (CompexPro 102, Coherent) laser ablation system equipped with an S-155 two-volume ablation cell (Laurin Technic, Australia). Reference materials were NIST SRM-614, USGS basaltic glass GSC-G, Durango apatite, Mudtank zircon, and Diamantina apatite (Minas Gerais). The JEOL Hyperprobe JXA-8530F Plus field emission electron microprobe at the Goethe-Universtiät Frankfurt was used for qualitative WDS and EDS mappings, and quantitative WDS element analyses. Small mesostasis grains were measured with an acceleration voltage of 10 kV, and larger groundmass grains (merrillite) with 15 kV. The beam current was set to 20 nA. A focused spot (<100 nm) was used for mesostasis grains, except for feldspar, which was measured with a defocused spot of 8 µm in diameter. Merrillite was measured with spot sizes between 1 and 10 µm. Results: The fine-grained, Si-rich mesostasis mainly consists of silica and feldspar intergrowths (tens of micrometers in grain size) with the small accessory phases tranquillityite, Cl-apatite, pyroxene, Fe-Ti oxide, iron sulfide and baddeleyite (micrometers to tens of micrometers in grain size). We mainly used tranquillityite, next to Clapatite, baddeleyite and feldspar for U-Pb dating. The U-Pb age derived for Si-rich mesostasis minerals is 172.4 ±6.1 Ma (2s, MSWD = 0.61, n = 30). Merrillite is observed with or without apatite intergrowths or rims and with grain sizes up to 1000 µm. The grains contain melt inclusions, appearing either as small (1-11 µm), circular inclusions aligned in linear arrays parallel to the long axis - or as larger circular (up to 30 µm in diameter) or elongated (up to 120 µm in length) melt inclusions. U-Pb dating was performed on 11 merrillite grains (20 spots) avoiding intergrown apatite, as confirmed by BSE images and EPMA-measuerements next to each ablation spot. The derived U-Pb age for merrilte is 178.3 ±10.6 Ma (2s, MSWD = 0.68, n = 20). Discussion and Conclusion: We interpret the U-Pb age of the Si-rich mesostasis as the age of magmatic crystallization. This age is indistinguishable from the U-Pb age derived from merrillite, and both are in agreement with published crystallization ages for enriched shergottites [6,7]. Different ages for the late-stage magmatic merrillite and Si-rich mesostasis would be expected, if the latter was formed during impact-induced melting, and we found no evidence that merrillite was produced by shock [8]. Thus, our results are in favour of a late-stage magmatic formation of the Si-rich mesostasis in NWA 6963 [1] and possibly also for Si-rich mesostas in other enriched shergottites. The contrast in grain sizes between late-stage merrillite and Si-rich mesostasis implies an abrupt change in cooling rates, perhaps related to the transport of the magma from a deep-seated crustal chamber into the shallow Martian subsurface [2]. A crystallization age for NWA 6963 can be given with 173.9 ±5.3 Ma (weighted mean of the two derived ages, 2s). Our results imply that Si-rich melts on Mars were produced until at least that time. Abstract

Special Issue: 74th Annual Meeting of the Meteoritical Society, August 8-12, 2011, London, U.K.; International audience; Although synchrotron radiation X-Ray fluorescence (SR-XRF) is among the least destructive analysis methods applied to rare extraterrestrial grains, we have observed radiation damage effects following high flux synchrotron analyses. Track 30 of the IS collector of the Stardust mission , containing 2 candidates dubbed Orion and Sirius was analyzed at ESRF, France, on beamlines ID13 and ID22NI by nano-XRF/XRD scanning methods. Beam damage effects were noticed on both samples and a quantitative analysis of their irradiation history was established , allowing us to propose new experimental protocols as well as fluence limits, minimizing such effects in the future. The purpose of this study is to present these facts, analyze potential damage mechanisms and offer alternatives.
