Abstract

This chapter provides a guide to the differential diagnoses of the most common presenting signs of disease in the four major reptile taxa: snakes, lizards, chelonians and crocodilians. For each presenting sign, a list of differential diagnoses is provided. These lists include circumstances where the presenting sign represents a normal state for that group of reptiles. They also include the husbandry errors that will cause, or predispose to, these presenting signs. The lists are intended to give the clinician a starting point for the diagnostic process.

Abstract

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EGE) is a rarely reported condition of ferrets. This article reviews three cases of suspected EGE in ferrets, summarizes the presenting signs, differential diagnoses, and treatment options, and discusses some question raised by this disease in ferrets. Immune suppression by means of prednisolone therapy is currently the treatment of choice.

Abstract

Sparganosis in the echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus, is characterized by large subcutaneous masses that may be confused with neoplasms. Plerocercoids, believed to be Spirometra erinacei, were found in the ventral or lateral subcutaneous tissues of three echidnas. In each case there was a prominent fibrous massor = 12 cm in diameter enclosing plerocercoids, which were surrounded by an intense inflammatory infiltrate dominated by plasma cells and lymphocytes, with focal suppuration. Multiple, small (or = 2 mm) plerocercoids were present in the lungs and pleural cavity of a fourth echidna that died due to severe pneumonitis. Several plerocercoids also were found in the lung of a platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) associated with parenchymal compression and focal pneumonia.
