Financial literacy is an important life skill, yet the impact of financial education has often been found to be modest. We conducted a field experiment to assess the effectiveness of a postinstruction intervention using a smartphone app that incorporated cognitive science principles aimed at improving learning. College students who completed a required credit review workshop during their sophomore year used the smartphone app in one of three practice conditions: control (no practice), massed, or spaced retrieval practice with elaborative feedback. On a final assessment about 5 months later, students who engaged in spaced retrieval practice were superior to those in the control and massed practice conditions in terms of knowledge. Given the ubiquity of smartphones today, the results highlight the potential of harnessing easily accessible technology as learning tools to augment the retention and transfer of knowledge.

Refutation texts are resurfacing as a suggested antidote to misconceptions and “fake news.” In a previous critical review of the refutation text literature, we, the author team, suggested further interrogation of the assumptions these texts imply: that learners share the same common misunderstanding about a topic, and that there is one “truth” that should replace the misconception. Building from Hynd’s feminist critique of refutation texts, we present in this essay a consideration of how these authoritative and prescriptive texts fit into an educational landscape being transformed by foci on students’ autonomy and funds of knowledge. In this position paper, we present the argument that refutation texts and their associated research may conflict with critical literacy perspectives and culturally responsive pedagogies. We examine these three perspectives for how they may view learning and literacy, and conclude the essay by proffering suggestions for future research on refutation text manipulations and for considering how refutational texts might be incorporated in classroom settings that enact culturally responsive pedagogy and critical literacy perspectives.

In this experiment, we recruited 261 psychology faculty to determine the extent to which they were able to visually estimate the overlap of two distributions given a Cohen’s d effect size; and vice-versa estimate d given two distributions of varying overlap. In a pre-test, participants in both conditions over-estimated effect sizes by half a standard deviation on average. No significant differences in estimation accuracy by psychology sub-field were found, but having taught statistics coursework was a significant predictor of better performance. After a short training session, participants improved substantially on both tasks on the post-test, with 63% reduction in absolute error and negligible overall bias (98% bias reduction). Furthermore, post-test performance indicated that learning transferred across answering modes. Teachers of statistics might find it beneficial to include a short exercise (less than 10 minutes) requiring the visual estimation of effect sizes in statistics coursework to better train future psychology researchers.

Learners are often constrained by their available study time, typically having to make a trade-off between depth and breadth of learning. Classic experimental paradigms in memory research treat all items as equally important, but this is unlikely the case in reality. Rather, information varies in importance, and people vary in their ability to distinguish what is more or less important. We test the impact of this trade-off in the study of Graduate Record Examination (GRE)-synonym word pairs. In our empirical Study 1, we split our stimuli set, with some items (focal) being afforded more rounds of retrieval practice than other items (non-focal). All conditions had the same total number of trials (i.e., constant study time), but differed in the number of focal words (breadth) and repetitions (depth). The conditions differed significantly in both mean performance and variance on the day-delayed test. Using this empirical data as a base, we then conducted a simulation (Study 2) modeling depth-breadth trade-offs under various conditions of learner forecasting accuracy and test coverage. In Study 2, we found that a medium-depth medium-breadth strategy was appropriate for most of the learning situations covered by our simulation, but that learners with a well-calibrated understanding of importance may benefit from a more targeted high-depth, low-breadth approach. Our results highlight the complexity of navigating the depth-breadth trade-off. Models of learning strategy optimization will need to account for learner forecasting sensitivity, which itself is likely an interaction between relatively stable individual differences and shifting contextual factors.

In this pre-registered replication of findings from Muis and Franco [2009; Contemporary Educational Psychology, 34(4), 306-318], college students (N = 978) from across the United States and Canada were surveyed regarding their goal orientations and learning strategies. A structural equation modelling approach was used to assess the associations between goal orientations and learning strategies. Twelve of the sixteen associations (75%) tested by Muis and Franco replicated successfully in the current study. Mastery approach goals positively predicted endorsement of all learning strategies (Rehearsal, Critical Thinking, Metacognitive Self-Regulation and Elaboration). Performance avoidance goals negatively predicted critical thinking, while positively predicting metacognitive self-regulation and rehearsal. Evidence for moderation by assignment type was found. No evidence of the moderation of these associations by gender, underrepresented minority status, or course type (STEM, Humanities, or Social Sciences) was found. The reliability of common scales used in educational research and issues concerning the replication of studies using structural equation modeling are discussed.

Although previous research on retrieval practice (RP) has predominantly featured stimuli with discrete right-or-wrong answers, continuous measures offer potentially greater sensitivity in assessing the effects of RP on memory precision. The present study used a colour gradient (125 points ranging from magenta to yellow) as a continuous response variable. The colours of different images were learned through either RP or restudy and either one or three cycles of practice after initial study. On a delayed final test, participants' memory was assessed for each item's colour. Participants also created per-item intervals representing the region where they believed the correct colour most likely to have been. We found that repeated rounds of RP enhanced the correspondence between responses and the correct colour. In addition, RP led to participants creating more accurate (correct answers were more likely to be within the participant-specified intervals) and more precise (narrower) intervals relative to restudy, suggesting that RP enhances the precision of memories.
