We examine how both automatic and motivated modes of categorization are integral to understanding momentary perceptions of organizations, including perceptions of organizational identity and legitimacy. We begin by discussing how extant organizational research has relied, primarily, on single modes of categorization to describe how we form momentary perceptions of organizations. These ‘single-mode’ frameworks have explained momentary organizational perceptions as the result of either automatic categorization (i.e. driven by unconscious cognitive processes) or motivated categorization (i.e. driven by individual needs and desires). While these frameworks explain much about momentary organizational perceptions, we provide some notable examples that do not follow the paths they predict. To more fully explain momentary organizational perceptions, we present a framework grounded in psychological research that considers how both motivated and automatic modes of categorization influence these perceptions. In doing so, we illustrate how such a ‘dual-mode’ framework might better account for organizational perceptions that seem counter-intuitive when viewed through a single-mode lens. We conclude by outlining some theoretical and practical implications of our framework, and presenting an agenda for future research on organizational categorization and perception that may capitalize on our dual-mode framework.

This review investigates the volunteering-work nexus, where an individual's paid occupational work in the business, government, or voluntary sector is akin to their volunteer work: tasks and responsibilities are similar, but the structure, conditions, and relationships differ. Performing work spans their business and volunteer worlds and brings dynamic interactions between work and volunteering. Pro bono, skills-based, or corporate volunteering are terms in use; however, these conceptualizations of the underlying and interconnecting practices of work and volunteering are too limited. This transdisciplinary, qualitative systematic literature review of 62 scientific articles studies individuals using conceptualizations of work, volunteering, and occupations over their working life, from service-learning to retirement. With ambiguous boundaries and terminology in the literature, we introduce a new term--occupation-related volunteering--defined as an individual acting to benefit others without payment or coercion, developing, using, or maintaining their occupational knowledge, skills, and abilities, and drawing upon their economic, social, and cultural capital. The definition anticipates that an individual's occupational resources change over their working life and vary depending on whether the volunteer is acting independently or with the support of their workplace. Occupation-related volunteering extends paid-unpaid and formal-informal boundaries to include volunteering in "paid" work time and in informal, community-based organizations and less public roles, such as mentoring. Finally, we encourage future research using the bibliometric data, suggestions in the reviewed articles, and our synthesis of the individual's perspective of performing their occupational work as a volunteer. - Abstract
The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

- Abstract
Workplace attendance behaviors (WABs), that is, absenteeism and presenteeism, are important to both organizations and individuals. Yet, despite growing knowledge on their formation, and ongoing calls for its exploration, research on how the legitimacy of WAB impacts attendance decisions is missing. We contribute by providing researchers with the Workplace Attendance Behavior Legitimacy Scale (WABLS), a reliable, valid, and economical measure validated in English and German, across five samples. WABLS includes 12 items that measure the personal norms of attending work via three dimensions that emerged across Studies 1A, 1B and 2, namely the respective legitimacies of working in the state of ill-health (sickness presenteeism), working despite a lack of motivation (motivational presenteeism), and not working due to a lack of motivation (motivational absenteeism). We find that WABLS exhibits good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, discriminant and criterion-related validity, and longitudinal and cross-lingual measurement invariance (Study 3). We discuss theoretical implications for attendance legitimacy as well as opportunities for the future use of WABLS.

By drawing on cognitive appraisal theory of stressful encounters (Folkman et al., 1986), we present and test the novel argument that the actual outcomes of bad news delivery are based on self-and other appraisals rather than self-assessments exclusively. In short, we argue that appraisals of identity threats in leaders can only be approved in their accuracy by assessing employees' perception of the amount of degradation of a leader's role identity after the delivery of bad news. Similarly, to draw conclusions about the accuracy of concerns leaders have regarding the potential perception of psychological contract violation of their employees, assessing and comparing the perceptions of employees with the appraisals of leaders is required. We argue that self- and other assessments of identity threat and psychological contract violation are more likely to be negative with increasing valence of the news (i.e., “badness” of the news), and in high-quality exchange relationships (compared to low quality relationships).

The purpose of the present commentary is to discuss the nature and correlates of workplace commitment across cultures. We asked six organizational behavior scholars, who are intimately familiar with Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, or Israel as their country of origin or extended residence, to "contextualize" workplace commitment. They did so by explicating institutional and cultural characteristics of their context on the emergence, meaning, and evolution of commitment by reference to their own research and extant local research. Their responses not only supported the utility of three-component model of commitment but also revealed the differential salience of various commitment constructs (e.g., components and foci of commitment) as well as possible contextual moderators on the development and outcomes of commitment. The commentators also described changes including the growing prevalence of multicultural workforces within national borders and changes in employment relationships and cultural values in their national contexts and considered future research directions in culture and commitment research. Structural equation modeling (SEM) can offer useful features to researchers conducting experiments. Yet most researchers appear not to apply such models when analyzing their data, relying instead on more restrictive (and sometimes inappropriate) approaches, such as analysis of variance (ANOVA). This paper is aimed at introducing experimentalists to the modeling options available in SEM. I compare and contrast ANOVA with two SEM-based approaches, addressing general attributes; specific features, such as the relation to confirmatory factor analysis; and assumptions imposed under each approach. A corresponding decision tree offers additional guidance for selecting between approaches. I then describe a general procedure for building and testing models under the two SEM-based approaches, ranging from preparatory decisions to checking assumptions, to obtaining estimates and conducting hypothesis tests. In addition, I discuss options for latent variable scaling, reporting effect sizes disattenuated from measurement error, incorporating manipulation checks, and adjusting inferences for Type I error inflation. Finally, I offer an example based on a real study (with annotated code for Mplus and R), taking readers though the modeling process and illustrating some implications of modeling choices. Crises are rare, impactful events threatening the existence of the affected organization. Based on the observation that organizations react to crises in various ways and with differing degrees of success, it remains unclear what kinds of reactions are effective in handling threatening events. This thesis analyzes the causal relationships of reactions to crises from a legitimacy perspective, with an emphasis on the interaction between the organization and its stakeholders. First, computer simulation is used to explore the role of reactions’ appropriateness and timing. It is demonstrated that both factors have nonlinear effects on overcoming crises. Then, the conceptual basis of crisis research from a legitimacy perspective is extended and systematized. Finally, empirical evidence from two qualitative studies is presented. Organizational crises were found to be linked to a loss in legitimacy. Furthermore, results suggest differences in efficacy for certain reactions to crises, while timing appears to be particularly important. Overall, the thesis contributes to the understanding of the social dimension of organizational crises.

Organizational commitment of employees towards their employer is highly relevant for both the committed individual as well as the organization. Positive effects on task performance and job satisfaction as well as the reduction of absenteeism and turnover increase organizational competitiveness. Despite extensive research efforts, details of the development of OC remain largely unexplored, particularly with regards to differences at the person level. The aim of this paper is to deduce propositions on the role of residual commitment within this context. Based on the assumption that commitment does not necessarily end when organizational membership does, we posit that residual affective and residual normative commitment towards former organizations form competitive relationships with current commitment. Closer investigation of such parallel commitments may help explain inconclusive results of earlier studies investigating antecedents of OC. Finally, implications for research on organizational commitment and socialization will be discussed. JEL classification: M12, M5

>Organizational crises can be conceptualized as interactions between organizations and stake-holders around the breach and reestablishment of common norms and social codes, i.e. per-ceptions of legitimacy. This paper contributes to the understanding of organizational crises by exploring the roles of dimensions of legitimacy in organizational crises as well as the role of different reactions in the resolution of crises. Results of two qualitative multiple-case studies based on analyses of media reports are presented. They suggest that crises are indeed charac-terized by a loss in legitimacy, the specific dimensions depending on the type of crisis. More-over, results support the notion that the type as well as the timing of organizational reactions to crises is relevant to the effective handling of threatening events.

Research on organizational crises has typically focused on case studies or measures for crisis prevention, while the social dimension of crises has remained largely unexplored. In some rare exceptions, differences in the efficacy of reactive strategies depending on the type of crisis have been reported. However, the mechanisms behind these differences remain unclear. This paper aims to fill this gap by arguing that organizational crises and effective reactions are linked by different dimensions of legitimacy perceived by stakeholders. To this end, after elaborating on the role of legitimacy in organizational crises, typologies of crises as well as reactive strategies are presented, accompanied by propositions about possible links.

- Abstract
Stressful work events are a daily reality for workers. Given its prevalence, understanding how workers deal with stressful work events is both theoretically and practically imperative to "putting the worker front and center" (Academy of Management, 2023). We extend the extant focus on employees' responses by exploring both employees' and managers' experiences of stressful events, and hence more fully capture workers' experience. Our symposium gathers international scholars from Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States to investigate workers' experiences of stressful work events using diverse situations, perspectives, and methodologies. Specifically, our papers investigate (a) employees' experience of, and responses to managerial inaction as a stressful event, (b) how leadership role occupancy and autonomy influence the specific self-regulation strategies workers pursue to cope with taxing work demands, (c) how the enactment of justice is a form of identity work in managers during challenging work events, (d) how self- and other-directed assessments of identity threat emerge during the stressful situations of layoffs and denied promotions in managers and employees, and (e) how interpersonal justice assists/impedes professors in reacting to negative student feedback. Following the paper presentations, Dr. Laurie Barclay will conclude the symposium with an engaging, interactive discussion that highlights key insights and future research directions. By showcasing theoretical and practical insights into how workers (i.e., employees and managers) and organizations can more effectively manage stressful work situations, we aim to fulfill the Academy of Management's objective to "putting the worker front and center". This study investigated whether participating in inter-organisational (i.e. self-directed, non-strategic) employee volunteering, which is common but rarely studied, is associated with increased organisational commitment. We find evidence for this relation in a sample ( N = 385) of employee volunteers and their non-volunteering co-workers. We statistically account for self-selection into the volunteering program by incorporating individual motives for volunteering. Volunteers compared to non-volunteers exhibited relatively stronger motives of expressing altruistic values and avoiding negative affect, but a weaker motive of attaining career advancement. Our findings point to an efficient way of increasing organisational commitment that is relatively inexpensive to implement. They also complement existing research from other employee volunteering contexts, pointing to a possible trade-off between the desired outcomes of effectively managing volunteering programs. Employee volunteering is a topic of growing importance in workplaces around the globe. Likewise, research on employee volunteering has seen a marked increase over the past decade, particularly in leading management and psychology outlets. Despite this increasing visibility, there is little consensus on the state of the literature or directions for the future. In particular, research is currently based on a variety of different definitions and operationalizations and is spread across several disciplines. In order to advance management research on employee volunteering, this review focuses on three contributions: (1) clarifying the definition and various forms of employee volunteering, (2) reviewing the current body of knowledge on employee volunteering, and (3) providing a future research agenda for the role of employee volunteering in the workplace. - Abstract
The six works in this symposium provide examples of scale development and exemplify best practices. Rather than reiterate similar steps among the six studies, the presenters will focus on the most difficult aspect(s) of developing each scale providing a "behind the scenes" look at challenges in scale development. Two measurement expert discussants will subsequently expand on each challenge and provide recommendations and general feedback regarding the challenge and how best to address it within the field of management. Following the paper presentations, the discussants will share their thoughts on the future of scale development as well as answer audience questions. * Challenges in Developing and Validating Target neutral Scales of Different Bond Types * Presenter: Howard Klein; Ohio State U. * Presenter: Heiko Breitsohl; U. of Klagenfurt, Austria * Presenter: Marina Schefer; U. of Osnabrueck * Presenter: Tammo Straatmann; U. of Osnabrueck * Presenter: Karsten Mueller; U. of Osnabrueck * Rebuilding the Foundation: What Is Status and How Do We Measure It? * Presenter: Truit Gray; Bowling Green State U. * Presenter: Lisa Schurer Lambert; Oklahoma State U. * Scale Development Challenges Related to Scoring the CRT-A * Presenter: Sydney Reichin; Pennsylvania State U. * Presenter: Ashley Linden-Carmichael; Pennsylvania State U. * Presenter: Daniel Smith; United States Military Academy * Presenter: James M. - Abstract
Despite growing research interest in presenteeism, broadly understood as the behavior of working in the state of ill-health, and its verified importance for many organizations and employees, presenteeism is still in need of both theoretical and empirical work. On the one hand, it is of high importance not only to understand the antecedents of presenteeism but also to (better) understand the underlying process that will result in a specific attendance behavior. On the other hand, the long-term consequences of presenteeism have been in the focus of research, while evidence on the short-term mechanisms that lead to these consequences are vastly unexplored. Therefore, in this symposium, we focus on the formation of presenteeism as well as its short-term consequences for extra-role behaviors and entitlement cognitions. Evidence collected from different countries (e.g., Germany, the Philippines, Singapore, the UK, and the USA) and analyzed using a variety of methods will be used to discuss both formation and consequences of presenteeism within organizations. In particular, we will 1) describe a novel conceptual model about the formation of presenteeism; 2) share empirical evidence concerning presenteeism of teleworkers; 3) investigate the role of gender as a moderator in the relationship between presenteeism and extra-role behaviors; and finally, 4) present a daily diary study focusing on the short-term effects of presenteeism. Across the symposium, methodological challenges and theoretical developments in the field of presenteeism will be addressed. In conclusion, the discussant Christopher C. Rosen will discuss the results and go beyond the presentations to conceive diverse avenues for potential future research. * How do people decide? - Abstract
Managing negative situations is a critical task for managers and organizations, especially since doing so effectively is imperative for "creating a better world" (Academy of Management, 2021). However, there are numerous obstacles that can challenge managers. Our symposium gathers an international panel of scholars from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Portugal, The Netherlands, and the United States that leverages diverse perspectives and methodologies to (a) assess what influences managers' decisions to pursue punishment (vs. procedural justice) when they handle ambiguous allegations of harm, (b) how managerial inaction can be detrimental for employees and managers, (c) how procedural justice issues can influence managers conducting layoffs, (d) how anticipatory moral emotions affect managerial behaviors in "necessary evil" tasks, and (e) how managers can effectively deliver bad news. Following the paper presentations, Dr. Robert Bies will conclude the symposium with an engaging interactive discussion that highlights key insights and future research directions. By showcasing theoretical and practical insights into how managers and organizations can more effectively manage negative situations, we aim to fulfill the Academy of Management's objective to "create a better world" through responsible management. * Procedural Justice and Safety Trade-Offs in Ambiguous Allegations of Harm * Presenter: Maja Graso; U. of Otago * Presenter: Karl Aquino; U. of British Columbia * Presenter: Fan Xuan Chen; U. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign * Presenter: Jeroen Camps; Thomas More * Presenter: Nicole Strah; Purdue U. * Presenter: Kees Van Den Bos; Utrecht U. * "In"action Speaks Louder Than Words: Examining the Importance of Managerial Inaction * Presenter: Christine Chi Hye Hwang; U. of Guelph * Presenter: Daniel Brady; Wilfrid Laurier U. * Out of Control?
