Search

This White Paper summarises potential key science topics to be achieved with Thai National Radio Telescope (TNRT). The commissioning phase has started in mid 2022. The key science topics consist of "Pulsars and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs)", "Star Forming Regions (SFRs)", "Galaxy and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs)", "Evolved Stars", "Radio Emission of Chemically Peculiar (CP) Stars", and "Geodesy", covering a wide range of observing frequencies in L/C/X/Ku/K/Q/W-bands (1-115 GHz). As a single-dish instrument, TNRT is a perfect tool to explore time domain astronomy with its agile observing systems and flexible operation. Due to its ideal geographical location, TNRT will significantly enhance Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) arrays, such as East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN), Australia Long Baseline Array (LBA), European VLBI Network (EVN), in particular via providing a unique coverage of the sky resulting in a better complete "uv" coverage, improving synthesized-beam and imaging quality with reducing side-lobes. This document highlights key science topics achievable with TNRT in single-dish mode and in collaboration with VLBI arrays., Comment: 75 pages, 16 figures, 15 tables. The evolution of asymptotic giant branch stars from the spherical symmetry into the diverse shapes of planetary nebulae (PNe) is a topic of intensive research. Young PNe provide a unique opportunity to characterize the onset of this transitional phase. In particular, OH maser-emitting PNe (OHPNe) are considered nascent PNe. In fact, only 6 OHPNe have been confirmed to date. In order to identify and characterize more OHPNe, we processed the unpublished continuum data of the interferometric follow-up of the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH). We then matched the interferometric positions of OH maser and radio continuum emission, considering the latter as a possible tracer of free-free emission from photoionized gas, characteristic of PNe. We report 8 objects with a positive coincidence, 4 of which are classified as candidate OHPNe here for the first time (IRAS 16372-4808, IRAS 17494-2645, IRAS 18019-2216 and OH 341.6811+00.2634). Available evidence strongly indicates that they are evolved stars, while the comparison with confirmed OHPNe indicates that they are likely to be PNe. Their final confirmation as bona fide PNe, however, requires optical/infrared spectroscopy. The obtained spectral indices of the radio continuum emission (between $\simeq$ 0.4 - 1.3) are consistent with partially optically thick free-free emission from photoionized gas. Also, they cluster in the same region of a WISE colour-colour diagram as that of the confirmed OHPNe ($9.5 \lesssim [3.4]-[22] \lesssim 13.5$, and $4.0 \lesssim [4.6]-[12] \lesssim 7.0$), thus this diagram could help to identify more OHPNe candidates in the future., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. We present observations of an extreme radio flare, VT J024345.70-284040.08, hereafter VT J0243, from the nucleus of a galaxy with evidence for historic Seyfert activity at redshift $z=0.074$. Between NRAO VLA Sky Survey observations in 1993 to VLA Sky Survey observations in 2018, VT J0243 rose from a ${\sim}$GHz radio luminosity of $\nu L_\nu \lesssim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$ to $\nu L_\nu{\sim}10^{40}$ erg s$^{-1}$, and still continues to brighten. The radio spectral energy distribution (SED) evolution is consistent with a nascent jet that has slowed over ${\sim}3000$ days with an average $0.1 < \langle \beta \rangle < 0.6$. The jet is energetic (${\sim}10^{51-52}$ erg), and had a radius ${\sim}0.7$ pc in Dec. 2021. X-ray observations suggest a persistent or evolving corona, possibly associated with an accretion disk, and IR and optical observations constrain any high-energy counterpart to be sub-Eddington. VT J0243 may be an example of a young, off-axis radio jet from a slowly evolving tidal disruption event. Other more mysterious triggers for the accretion enhancement and jet launching are possible. In either case, VT J0243 is a unique example of a nascent jet, highlighting the unknown connection between supermassive black holes, the properties of their accretion flows, and jet launching., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. We present the first unbiased survey of neutral hydrogen (HI) absorption in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The survey utilises pilot HI observations with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope as part of the Galactic ASKAP HI (GASKAP-HI) project whose dataset has been processed with the GASKAP-HI absorption pipeline, also described here. This dataset provides absorption spectra towards 229 continuum sources, a 275% increase in the number of continuum sources previously published in the SMC region, as well as an improvement in the quality of absorption spectra over previous surveys of the SMC. Our unbiased view, combined with the closely matched beam size between emission and absorption, reveals a lower cold gas faction (11%) than the 2019 ATCA survey of the SMC and is more representative of the SMC as a whole. We also find that the optical depth varies greatly between the SMC's bar and wing regions. In the bar we find that the optical depth is generally low (correction factor to the optically thin column density assumption of $\mathcal{R}_{\rm HI} \sim 1.04$) but increases linearly with column density. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to make new observations of the 36.2-GHz ($4_{-1}\rightarrow3_0$E) methanol transition toward NGC 4945 and NGC 253. These observations have revealed the presence of new maser components toward these galaxies, and have provided the first clear evidence for variability in extragalactic class~I methanol masers. Alongside the new observations of NGC 4945 and NGC 253, we present the results of recent 36.2-GHz methanol maser searches toward 12 galaxies, placing upper limits on the emission from the 36.2-GHz class~I transition and the 37.7-GHz ($7_{2}\rightarrow8_1$E) class~II maser line toward these sources. Flux density values for the 7-mm continuum emission toward these sources are also reported where applicable. A re-analysis of the published 36.2-GHz methanol observations of Arp 220 undertaken as part of the search revealed some issues with previous imaging procedures. The re-analysis, combined with non-detections in independent follow-up observations suggest that there is no 36.2-GHz methanol emission toward Arp 220 stronger than 3.5 mJy in a 10 km s$^{-1}$ channel (5$\sigma$ upper limit)., Comment: Accepted into MNRAS 2019 November 1. 15 pages, 6 figures and 8 tables (7 in main text, 1 in appendix)

We have performed a molecular line search toward the flaring 6.7-GHz masers G24.33+0.13 and G359.62-0.24 using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We present spectra of the 6.7-GHz class~II methanol and 22.2-GHz water masers toward these sources and provide comparison with other recent flaring events these sources have experienced. We also detect the fourth example of a 23.4-GHz class~I methanol maser, and the eleventh example of a 4.8-GHz formaldehyde maser toward G24.33+0.13. Alongside these results, we observe the previously detected ammonia (3,3) emission and report upper limits on the presence of various other cm-wavelength methanol, ammonia and OH transitions. We report the most detailed $1-3$ GHz radio continuum emission map of the nearest region of massive star formation, the Carina Nebula. As part of a large program with the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we have covered $\sim$ 12 deg$^2$, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim$ 16 arcsec, representing the largest and most complete map of the radio continuum to date. Our continuum map shows a spectacular and complex distribution of emission across the nebula, with multiple structures such as filaments, shells, and fronts across a wide range of size scales. The ionization fronts have advanced far into the southern and northern region of the Galactic Plane, as fronts are clearly detected at distances $\sim$ 80 pc from the stellar clusters in the center. We estimated an ionization photon luminosity $Q_\mathrm{H}=(7.8 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{50}$ s$^{-1}$ which corresponds to $\sim 85\%$ of the total value obtained from stellar population studies. Thus, approximately $15\%$ of the ionizing flux has escaped from the nebula into the diffuse Galactic Interstellar Medium. Comparison between radio continuum and the hydrogen atomic and molecular gas maps offers a clear view of the bipolar outflow driven by the energy released by the massive stellar clusters that also affects the fraction of molecular gas across the nebula. Comparison between 8$\mu$m and 70$\mu$m emission maps and the radio continuum reveals how the hot gas permeates through the molecular cloud, shapes the material into features such as pillars, small shells and arc-like structures, and ultimately, escapes., Comment: 18 pages, 16 Figures, 1 appendix

We present high spatial resolution observations of ground-state OH masers achieved with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations targeted 253 pointing centres containing OH maser candidates at all four ground-state OH transitions identified in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) across 96 square degrees of the Southern Galactic plane (332\degree$

We present observations of the 36- (4_-1 -> 3_0E) and 84-GHz (5_-1 -> 4_0 E) class I methanol maser transitions towards a sample of 94 known class I sites. These observations resulted in 93 and 92 detections in the 84- and 36-GHz transitions. While the majority of the 36-GHz sources have been previously reported, many of the sites are observed in the 84-GHz transition for the first time. The near-simultaneous observations of the two transitions revealed strikingly similar spectral profiles and a mean and median 36- to 84-GHz integrated flux density ratio of 2.6 and 1.4. Alongside the 36- and 84-GHz observations, we included rare class II methanol masers at 37.7-, 38.3-, 38.5-, 86.6- and 86.9-GHz, a number of recombination lines, and thermal molecular transitions. We detect one new site of 86.6- and 86.9-GHz methanol masers, as well as six maser candidates in one or more of 37.7-, 38.3-, 38.5-, 86.6- and 86.9-GHz methanol maser transitions. We detect a relatively higher rate of HC3N compared to that reported by MALT90 (once the respective detection limits were taken into account) who targeted dense dust clumps, suggesting that the class I methanol maser targets incorporate a relatively higher number of warm protostellar sources. We further find that there are similar relationships between the integrated flux density of both class I transitions with the integrated intensity of HC3N, HNC, HCO+, HNC, SiO and H13CO+. We suggest that this indicates that the integrated flux density of the 36- and 84-GHz transitions are closely linked to the available gas volume., Comment: MNRAS accepted 10 December 2018

Using the Mopra telescope, we have targeted 61 regions in the Carina Nebula, covering an area of 1.5 square degrees, of bright and compact 870 $\mu$m dust continuum emission for molecular line emission from a host of 16 spectral lines at 3mm, including several dense gas tracers. We found that the clumps detected in Carina in general have in average higher temperatures (27 K compared to 21 K), and lower masses (214 M$_\odot$ compared to 508 M$_\odot$) than clumps located at a similar distance to us in the Galactic Plane. We compare the properties of the molecular line emission of these clumps with the MALT90 survey, finding that the detection rates of the molecular lines are similar to MALT90 clumps that are classified as PDRs. However, most of the clumps located within 10' of $\eta$ Carina have little molecular line emission detected in our observations. Given the lack of maser detection in the Carina region, we also compared the properties the clumps in Carina to those of Galactic clumps associated with 6.7-GHz methanol masers. We found that the clumps in Carina are warmer, less massive, and show less emission from the four most commonly detected molecules, HCO$^+$, N$_2$H$^+$, HCN, and HNC, compared to clumps associated with masers in the Galactic Plane. Overall our results are consistent with the scenario in which the high radiation field of $\eta$ Carina is dramatically affecting its local environment, and therefore the chemical composition of the dense clumps., Comment: 16 Pages, 16 Figures, 4 Tables

We report the detection of emission from the 6.7 GHz 5(1)-6(0)A+ transition of methanol towards the center of the nearby galaxy NGC4945. This is the first detection of emission in this transition beyond the local group. The isotropic luminosity of the integrated 6.7 GHz methanol emission is approximately a factor of 10000 greater than that for 6.7 GHz methanol masers associated with Galactic high-mass star formation regions. The methanol emission is resolved on scales smaller than 40 pc and it appears unlikely that it could be due to a large concentration of Galactic-style star formation masers within a small region. Comparison with observations of other methanol transitions suggests that the 6.7 GHz methanol emission is due to a diffuse, low-gain maser, amplifying the background continuum radiation from the nuclear region. The methanol emission is blueshifted with respect to the the systemic velocity of the galaxy by several hundred kilometers per second and lies outside the velocity range associated with the dense gas and neutral hydrogen in the central region of NGC4945. We have investigated the central region of NGC 253 for the presence of 84.5-GHz ($5_{-1}\rightarrow4_0$E) methanol emission using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We present the second detection of 84.5-GHz class~I methanol maser emission outside the Milky Way. This maser emission is offset from dynamical centre of NGC 253, in a region with previously detected emission from class~I maser transitions (36.2-GHz $4_{-1}\rightarrow3_0$E and 44.1-GHz $7_{0}\rightarrow6_1$A$^{+}$ methanol lines) . The emission features a narrow linewidth ($\sim$12 km s$^{-1}$) with a luminosity approximately 5 orders of magnitude higher than typical Galactic sources. We determine an integrated line intensity ratio of $1.2\pm0.4$ between the 36.2 GHz and 84.5-GHz class I methanol maser emission, which is similar to the ratio observed towards Galactic sources. The three methanol maser transitions observed toward NGC 253 each show a different distribution, suggesting differing physical conditions between the maser sites and that observations of additional class~I methanol transitions will facilitate investigations of the maser pumping regime., Comment: Accepted into ApJL 12 October 2018. 10 pages, 3 Figures and 2 Tables

We present high spatial resolution observations of ground-state OH masers, achieved using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations were conducted towards 171 pointing centres, where OH maser candidates were identified previously in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) towards the Galactic Center region, between Galactic longitudes of $355^{\circ}$ and $5^{\circ}$ and Galactic latitudes of $-2^{\circ}$ and $+2^{\circ}$. We detect maser emission towards 162 target fields and suggest that 6 out of 9 non-detections are due to intrinsic variability. Due to the superior spatial resolution of the follow-up ATCA observations, we have identified 356 OH maser sites in the 162 of the target fields with maser detections. Almost half (161 of 356) of these maser sites have been detected for the first time in these observations. After comparing the positions of these 356 maser sites to the literature, we find that 269 (76\%) sites are associated with evolved stars (two of which are planetary nebulae), 31 (9\%) are associated with star formation, four are associated with supernova remnants and we were unable to determine the origin of the remaining 52 (15\%) sites. Unlike the pilot region (\citealt{Qie2016a}), the infrared colors of evolved star sites with symmetric maser profiles in the 1612 MHz transition do not show obvious differences compared with those of evolved star sites with asymmetric maser profiles., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted by ApJS

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to conduct further observations of the 36.2-GHz ($4_{-1}\rightarrow3_0$E) methanol transition towards the nearby active galaxy NGC 4945. These observations have led to a more accurate determination of the offset between the maser emission and the nucleus of NGC 4945 with a typical synthesised beam of $6^{\prime\prime} \times 4^{\prime\prime}$ ($108\times72$ pc). This corresponds to a factor of 4 improvement with respect to the major-axis of the beam. Other transitions of methanol and lines of other molecular species were obtained alongside the 36.2-GHz methanol emission, with strong detections of HC$_3$N (J = $4 \rightarrow 3$) and CS (J = $1 \rightarrow0$) presented here. We do not detect thermal methanol (5$\sigma$ upper limit of 5 mJy in a 6 km s$^{-1}$ channel) from the 48.4-GHz ($1_{0}\rightarrow0_0$A$^+$) ground-state transition, nor emission from the 44.1-GHz ($7_{0} \rightarrow 6_1 $A$^+$) class~I maser transition (5$\sigma$ upper limit of 6 mJy in a 3 km s$^{-1}$ channel). We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to undertake the first high angular resolution observations of 37.7-GHz ($7_{-2} - 8_{-1}E$) methanol masers towards a sample of eleven high-mass star formation regions which host strong 6.7-GHz methanol masers. The 37.7-GHz methanol sites are coincident to within the astrometric uncertainty (0.4 arcseconds) with the 6.7-GHz methanol masers associated with the same star formation region. However, spatial and spectral comparison of the 6.7- and 37.7-GHz maser emission within individual sources shows that the 37.7-GHz masers are less often, or to a lesser degree co-spatial than are the 12.2-GHz and 6.7-GHz masers. We also made sensitive, high angular resolution observations of the 38.3- and 38.5-GHz class II methanol transitions ($6_{2} - 5_{3}A^{-}$ and $6_{2} - 5_{3}A^{+}$, respectively) and the 36.2-GHz ($4_{-1} - 3_{0}E$) class I methanol transition towards the same sample of eleven sources. The 37.7-, 38.3- and 38.5-GHz methanol masers are unresolved in the current observations, which implies a lower limit on the brightness temperature of the strongest masers of more than $10^6$K. We detected the 38.3-GHz methanol transition towards 7 sources, 5 of which are new detections and detected the 38.5-GHz transition towards 6 sources, 4 of which are new detections. We detected 36.2-GHz class I methanol masers towards all eleven sources, 6 of these are new detections for this transition, of which 4 sources do not have previously reported class I methanol masers from any transition., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 34 pages, 20 figures

We have searched for emission from the 36.2 GHz ($4_{-1} \rightarrow 3_0$E) methanol transition towards NGC 4945, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. 36.2 GHz methanol emission was detected offset south-east from the Galactic nucleus. The methanol emission is narrow, with a linewidth <10 kms$^{-1}$, and a luminosity five orders of magnitude higher than Galactic class I masers from the same transition. These characteristics combined the with physical separation from the strong central thermal emission suggests that the methanol emission is a maser. This emission is a factor of $\sim90$ more luminous than the widespread emission detected from the Milky Way central molecular zone (CMZ). This is the fourth detection of extragalactic class I emission, and the third detection of extragalactic 36.2 GHz maser emission. These extragalactic class I methanol masers do not appear to be simply highly luminous variants of Galactic class I emission, and instead appear to trace large-scale regions of low-velocity shocks in molecular gas, which may precede, or be associated with, the early stages of large-scale star formation., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We report high spatial resolution observations of the HI 21cm line in the Carina Nebula and the Gum 31 region obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The observations covered $\sim$ 12 deg$^2$ centred on $l= 287.5\deg,b = -1\deg$, achieving an angular resolution of $\sim $ 35 arcseconds. The HI map revealed complex filamentary structures across a wide range of velocities. Several "bubbles" are clearly identified in the Carina Nebula Complex, produced by the impact of the massive star clusters located in this region. An HI absorption profile obtained towards the strong extragalactic radio source PMN J1032--5917 showed the distribution of the cold component of the atomic gas along the Galactic disk, with the Sagittarius-Carina and Perseus spiral arms clearly distinguishable. Preliminary calculations of the optical depth and spin temperatures of the cold atomic gas show that the HI line is opaque ($\tau \gtrsim$ 2) at several velocities in the Sagittarius-Carina spiral arm. The spin temperature is $\sim100$ K in the regions with the highest optical depth, although this value might be lower for the saturated components. The atomic mass budget of Gum 31 is $\sim35 \%$ of the total gas mass. HI self absorption features have molecular counterparts and good spatial correlation with the regions of cold dust as traced by the infrared maps. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to observe the 36.2-GHz class I methanol maser emission towards NGC253 and find that it is located at the interface between the nuclear ring and both ends of the galactic bar. This is thought to be the location of the inner Linblad resonance and we suggest that the maser emission in this region is likely due to large-scale cloud-cloud collisions. We have detected the first extragalactic 44.1-GHz class I methanol maser and find that it is associated with the 36.2-GHz maser emission. In contrast to the class I methanol masers found in Galactic star formation regions, the 44.1-GHz emission in NGC253 is two orders of magnitude weaker than the 36.2-GHz masers. Both the 36.2- and 44.1- GHz emission is orders of magnitude stronger than expected from typical high-mass star formation regions. This demonstrates that the luminous class I methanol masers observed in NGC253 are significantly different from those associated with Galactic star formation., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We detail interferometric observations of 44GHz class I methanol masers detected by MALT-45 (a 7mm unbiased auto-correlated spectral-line Galactic-plane survey) using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. We detect 238 maser spots across 77 maser sites. Using high-resolution positions, we compare the class I CH$_3$OH masers to other star formation maser species, including CS (1-0), SiO $v=0$ and the H53$\alpha$ radio-recombination line. Comparison between the cross- and auto-correlated data has allowed us to also identify quasi-thermal emission in the 44GHz class I methanol maser line. We find that the majority of class I methanol masers have small spatial and velocity ranges ($<$0.5pc and $<$5 km s$^{-1}$), and closely trace the systemic velocities of associated clouds. Using 870$\mu$m dust continuum emission from the ATLASGAL survey, we determine clump masses associated with class I masers, and find they are generally associated with clumps between 1000 and 3000 $M_\odot$. For each class I methanol maser site, we use the presence of OH masers and radio recombination lines to identify relatively evolved regions of high-mass star formation; we find that maser sites without these associations have lower luminosities and preferentially appear toward dark infrared regions., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS on 12 July 2017

We report the detection of maser emission from the $J=4-3$ transition of HC$_3$N at 36.4~GHz towards the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. This is the first detection of maser emission from this transition in either a Galactic or extragalactic source. The HC$_3$N maser emission has a brightness temperature in excess of 2500 K and is offset from the center of the galaxy by approximately 18 arcsec (300 pc), but close to a previously reported class~I methanol maser. Both the HC$_3$N and methanol masers appear to arise near the interface between the galactic bar and the central molecular zone, where it is thought that molecular gas is being transported inwards, producing a region of extensive low-velocity shocks., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 7 pages, 3 figures

We report on high spatial resolution observations, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), of ground-state OH masers. These observations were carried out toward 196 pointing centres previously identified in the Southern Parkes Large-Area Survey in Hydroxyl (SPLASH) pilot region, between Galactic longitudes of $334^{\circ}$ and $344^{\circ}$ and Galactic latitudes of $-2^{\circ}$ and $+2^{\circ}$. Supplementing our data with data from the MAGMO (Mapping the Galactic Magnetic field through OH masers) survey, we find maser emission towards 175 of the 196 target fields. We conclude that about half of the 21 non-detections were due to intrinsic variability. Due to the superior sensitivity of the follow-up ATCA observations, and the ability to resolve nearby sources into separate sites, we have identified 215 OH maser sites towards the 175 fields with detections. Among these 215 OH maser sites, 111 are new detections. After comparing the positions of these 215 maser sites to the literature, we identify 122 (57 per cent) sites associated with evolved stars (one of which is a planetary nebula), 64 (30 per cent) with star formation, two sites with supernova remnants and 27 (13 per cent) of unknown origin. The infrared colors of evolved star sites with symmetric maser profiles tend to be redder than those of evolved star sites with asymmetric maser profiles, which may indicate that symmetric sources are generally at an earlier evolutionary stage., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures, accepted by ApJS, 162 on-line figures

We applied three statistical classification techniques - linear discriminant analysis (LDA), logistic regression and random forests - to three astronomical datasets associated with searches for interstellar masers. We compared the performance of these methods in identifying whether specific mid-infrared or millimetre continuum sources are likely to have associated interstellar masers. We also discuss the ease, or otherwise, with which the results of each classification technique can be interpreted. Non-parametric methods have the potential to make accurate predictions when there are complex relationships between critical parameters. We found that for the small datasets the parametric methods logistic regression and LDA performed best, for the largest dataset the non-parametric method of random forests performed with comparable accuracy to parametric techniques, rather than any significant improvement. This suggests that at least for the specific examples investigated here accuracy of the predictions obtained is not being limited by the use of parametric models. We also found that for LDA, transformation of the data to match a normal distribution in the input parameters led to big improvements in accuracy. We report on OH maser emission toward G336.644-0.695 (IRAS 16333-4807), which is a H2O maser-emitting Planetary Nebula (PN). We have detected 1612, 1667 and 1720 MHz OH masers at two epochs using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), hereby confirming it as the seventh known case of an OH-maser-emitting PN. This is only the second known PN showing 1720 MHz OH masers after K 3-35 and the only evolved stellar object with 1720 MHz OH masers as the strongest transition. This PN is one of a group of very young PNe. The 1612 MHz and 1667 MHz masers are at a similar velocity to the 22 GHz H2O masers, whereas the 1720 MHz masers show a variable spectrum, with several components spread over a higher velocity range (up to 36 km/s). We also detect Zeeman splitting in the 1720 MHz transition at two epochs (with field strengths of ~2 to ~10 mG), which suggests the OH emission at 1720 MHz is formed in a magnetized environment. We present the first results from the MALT-45 (Millimetre Astronomer's Legacy Team - 45 GHz) Galactic Plane survey. We have observed 5 square-degrees ($l = 330 - 335$, $b = \pm0.5$) for spectral lines in the 7 mm band (42-44 and 48-49 GHz), including $\text{CS}$ $(1-0)$, class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers in the $7(0,7)-6(1,6)$ $\text{A}^{+}$ transition and $\text{SiO}$ $(1-0)$ $v=0,1,2,3$. MALT-45 is the first unbiased, large-scale, sensitive spectral line survey in this frequency range. In this paper, we present data from the survey as well as a few intriguing results; rigorous analyses of these science cases are reserved for future publications. Across the survey region, we detected 77 class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers, of which 58 are new detections, along with many sites of thermal and maser $\text{SiO}$ emission and thermal $\text{CS}$. We found that 35 class I $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$ masers were associated with the published locations of class II $\text{CH}_3\text{OH}$, $\text{H}_2\text{O}$ and $\text{OH}$ masers but 42 have no known masers within 60 arcsec. We compared the MALT-45 $\text{CS}$ with $\text{NH}_3$ (1,1) to reveal regions of $\text{CS}$ depletion and high opacity, as well as evolved star-forming regions with a high ratio of $\text{CS}$ to $\text{NH}_3$. All $\text{SiO}$ masers are new detections, and appear to be associated with evolved stars from the $\it{Spitzer}$ Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE). Generally, within $\text{SiO}$ regions of multiple vibrational modes, the intensity decreases as $v=1,2,3$, but there are a few exceptions where $v=2$ is stronger than $v=1$., Comment: Accepted by Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society on 2015 January 23. We have detected emission from both the 4_{-1}-3_{0} E (36.2~GHz) class I and 7_{-2}-8_{-1} E (37.7~GHz) class II methanol transitions towards the centre of the closest ultra-luminous infrared galaxy Arp 220. The emission in both the methanol transitions show narrow spectral features and have luminosities approximately 8 orders of magnitude stronger than that observed from typical class I methanol masers observed in Galactic star formation regions. The emission is also orders of magnitude stronger than the expected intensity of thermal emission from these transitions and based on these findings we suggest that the emission from the two transitions are masers. These observations provides the first detection of a methanol megamaser in the 36.2 and 37.7 GHz transitions and represents only the second detection of a methanol megamaser, following the recent report of an 84 GHz methanol megamaser in NGC1068. We find the methanol megamasers are significantly offset from the nuclear region and arise towards regions where there is Ha emission, suggesting that it is associated with starburst activity. The high degree of correlation between the spatial distribution of the 36.2 GHz methanol and X-ray plume emission suggests that the production of strong extragalactic class I methanol masers is related to galactic outflow driven shocks and perhaps cosmic rays. In contrast to OH and H2O megamasers which originate close to the nucleus, methanol megamasers provide a new probe of feedback (e.g. outflows) processes on larger-scales and of star formation beyond the circumnuclear starburst regions of active galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) to search for emission from the $4_{-1} \rightarrow 3_{0}E$ transition of methanol (36.2 GHz) towards the center of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. Two regions of emission were detected, offset from the nucleus along the same position angle as the inner spiral arms. The emission is largely unresolved on a scale of 5 arcsec, has a full-width half maximum (FWHM) line width of < 30 km s$^{-1}$, and an isotropic luminosity orders of magnitude larger than that observed in any Galactic star formation regions. These characteristics suggest that the 36.2 GHz methanol emission is most likely a maser, although observations with higher angular and spectral resolution are required to confirm this. If it is a maser this represents the first detection of a class I methanol maser outside the Milky Way. The 36.2 GHz methanol emission in NGC253 has more than an order of magnitude higher isotropic luminosity than the widespread emission recently detected towards the center of the Milky Way. If emission from this transition scales with nuclear star formation rate then it may be detectable in the central regions of many starburst galaxies. Detection of methanol emission in ultra-luminous infra-red galaxies (ULIRGs) would open up a new tool for testing for variations in fundamental constants (in particular the proton-to-electron mass ratio) on cosmological scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, 5 pages, 2 figures

We report on high spatial resolution water maser observations, using the Australia Telescope Compact Array, towards water maser sites previously identified in the H2O southern Galactic Plane Survey (HOPS). Of the 540 masers identified in the single-dish observations of Walsh et al. (2011), we detect emission in all but 31 fields. We report on 2790 spectral features (maser spots), with brightnesses ranging from 0.06 Jy to 576Jy and with velocities ranging from -238.5 to +300.5km/s. These spectral features are grouped into 631 maser sites. We have compared the positions of these sites to the literature to associate the sites with astrophysical objects. We identify 433 (69 per cent) with star formation, 121 (19 per cent) with evolved stars and 77 (12 per cent) as unknown. We find that maser sites associated with evolved stars tend to have more maser spots and have smaller angular sizes than those associated with star formation. We present evidence that maser sites associated with evolved stars show an increased likelihood of having a velocity range between 15 and 35 km/s compared to other maser sites. Of the 31 non-detections, we conclude they were not detected due to intrinsic variability and confirm previous results showing that such variable masers tend to be weaker and have simpler spectra with fewer peaks., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present the third instalment of a series of catalogues presenting 12.2-GHz methanol maser observations made towards each of the 6.7-GHz methanol masers detected in the Methanol Multibeam (MMB) Survey. The current portion of the catalogue includes the Galactic longitude region 10 to 20 degrees, where we detect 47 12.2-GHz methanol masers towards 99 6.7-GHz targets. We compare the occurrence of 12.2-GHz methanol masers with water maser emission, for which all 6.7-GHz methanol masers in the 6 to 20 degrees longitude range have now been searched. We suggest that the water masers follow a more complicated evolutionary scenario than has been found for the methanol and OH masers, likely due to their different pumping mechanisms. Comparisons of the 6.7-GHz methanol to OH maser peak flux density ratio and the luminosity of the associated 12.2-GHz sources suggests that the 12.2-GHz maser luminosity begins to decline around the time that an OH maser becomes detectable., Comment: MNRAS accepted

Recently, a comparison between the locations of 6.7-GHz methanol masers and dust continuum emission has renewed speculation that these masers can be associated with evolved stars. The implication of such a scenario would be profound, especially for the interpretation of large surveys for 6.7-GHz masers, individual studies where high-mass star formation has been inferred from the presence of 6.7-GHz methanol masers, and for the pumping mechanisms of these masers. We have investigated the two instances where 6.7-GHz methanol masers have been explicitly suggested to be associated with evolved stars, and we find the first to be associated with a standard high-mass star formation region, and the second to be a spurious detection. We also find no evidence to suggest that the methanol maser action can be supported in the environments of evolved stars. We have used the Australia Telescope Compact Array to undertake the first high-resolution observations of the 19.9-GHz methanol maser transition. The emission is coincident with the location of the targeted 6.7-GHz methanol masers to within 0.2 arcseconds in absolute position. We find that the relative distribution of the 19.9-GHz maser emission in our sample differs from that observed in the 6.7-GHz transition, in contrast to the similar distribution often seen in the 6.7- and 12.2-GHz methanol masers in many sources. We also find that the peak velocity for the 19.9-GHz methanol masers is frequently different from that observed in other class II transitions in the same regions. These two results suggest that while 19.9-GHz methanol masers arise from the same general location as other class II transitions, they are likely not coincident on milliarcsecond scales; which has implications for multi-transitional modelling of class II methanol maser sources. We have investigated the properties of the OH and other classII methanol transitions for those 107-GHz methanol masers with and without an associated 19.9-GHz methanol maser. On the basis of these comparisons we suggest that the 19.9-GHz transition traces an evolutionary phase around the peak of the class II maser luminosity into its decline., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 6 tables

We characterize the Millimeter Astronomy Legacy Team 90 GHz (MALT90) Survey and the Mopra telescope at 90 GHz. We combine repeated position-switched observations of the source G300.968+01.145 with a map of the same source in order to estimate the pointing reliability of the position-switched observations and, by extension, the MALT90 survey; we estimate our pointing uncertainty to be 8 arcseconds. We model the two strongest sources of systematic gain variability as functions of elevation and time-of-day and quantify the remaining absolute flux uncertainty. Corrections based on these two variables reduce the scatter in repeated observations from 12-25% down to 10-17%. We find no evidence for intrinsic source variability in G300.968+01.145. For certain applications, the corrections described herein will be integral for improving the absolute flux calibration of MALT90 maps and other observations using the Mopra telescope at 90 GHz., Comment: Corrected Figure 5

We present the second portion of a catalogue of 12.2-GHz methanol masers detected towards 6.7-GHz methanol masers observed in the unbiased Methanol Multibeam (MMB) Survey. Using the Parkes radio telescope we have targeted all 207 6.7-GHz methanol masers in the longitude range 186 to 330 degrees for 12.2-GHz counterparts. We report the detection of 83 12.2-GHz methanol masers, and one additional source which we suspect is thermal emission, equating to a detection rate of 40 per cent. Of the 83 maser detections, 39 are reported here for the first time. We discuss source properties, including variability and highlight a number of unusual sources. We present a catalogue of 12.2-GHz methanol masers detected towards 6.7-GHz methanol masers observed in the unbiased Methanol Multibeam (MMB) survey in the longitude range 330\circ (through 360\circ) to 10\circ. This is the first portion of the catalogue which, when complete, will encompass all of the MMB detections. We report the detection of 184 12.2-GHz sources towards 400 6.7-GHz methanol maser targets, equating to a detection rate of 46 per cent. Of the 184 12.2-GHz detections, 117 are reported here for the first time. We draw attention to a number of 'special' sources, particularly those with emission at 12.2-GHz stronger than their 6.7-GHz counterpart and conclude that these unusual sources are not associated with a specific evolutionary stage., Comment: accepted to MNRAS 21 Dec 2011

The possibility of using astrophysical observations of rotational transitions in the methanol molecule to measure, or constrain temporal and spatial variations in the proton-to-electron mass ratio (mu) has recently been investigated by several groups. Here we outline some of the practical considerations of making such observations, including both the instrumental and astrophysical limitations which exist at present. This leads us to conclude that such observations are unlikely to be able to improve evidence either for, or against the presence of variations in the proton-to-electron mass ratio by more than an order of magnitude beyond current limits., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure, accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We have conducted a sensitive water maser search with the ATCA towards 267 1.2-mm dust clumps presented in the literature. We combine our new observations with previous water maser observations to extend our sample to 294 1.2-mm dust clumps, towards which we detect 165 distinct water maser sites towards 128 1.2-mm dust clumps. Within the fields of our observations, we additionally find four water masers with no apparent associated 1.2-mm dust continuum emission. Our overall detection rate of 44 per cent appears to vary as a function of Galactic longitude. We find that there is an excellent correspondence between the locations of the detected water masers with the peak of the target 1.2-mm dust clump sources. As expected from previous similar studies, the water masers are chiefly detected towards the bigger, brighter and more massive 1.2-mm dust clumps. We find further evidence that the water masers tend to increase in flux density (and therefore luminosity), as well as velocity range, as the sources evolve. We also show that the current sample of water maser sources suffer less from evolutionary biases than previous targeted searches. A higher fraction of dust clump sources in our sample are only associated with water masers (41) than only associated with methanol masers (13). This suggests that water masers can be present at an even earlier evolutionary stage than 6.7-GHz methanol masers. Comparison of the water maser detection rates associated with different combinations of methanol maser and radio continuum, as well as those with neither tracer, shows that the highest detection rate is towards those sources which also exhibit methanol maser emission. We have tested a previously hypothesised model for water maser presence towards 1.2-mm dust clumps. We present definitive detection statistics for 12.2 GHz methanol masers towards a complete sample of 6.7 GHz methanol masers detected in the Methanol Multibeam survey south of declination -20 degrees. In total, we detect 250 12.2 GHz methanol masers towards 580 6.7 GHz methanol masers. This equates to a detection rate of 43.1%, which is lower than that of previous significant searches of comparable sensitivity. Both the velocity ranges and the flux densities of the target 6.7 GHz sources surpass that of their 12.2 GHz companion in almost all cases. 80 % of the detected 12.2 GHz methanol maser peaks are coincident in velocity with the 6.7 GHz maser peak. Our data support an evolutionary scenario whereby the 12.2 GHz sources are associated with a somewhat later evolutionary stage than the 6.7 GHz sources devoid of this transition. Furthermore, we find that the 6.7 GHz and 12.2 GHz methanol sources increase in luminosity as they evolve. In addition to this, evidence for an increase in velocity range with evolution is presented. This implies that it is not only the luminosity, but also the volume of gas conducive to the different maser transitions, that increases as the sources evolve. Comparison with GLIMPSE mid-infrared sources has revealed a coincidence rate between the locations of the 6.7 GHz methanol masers and GLIMPSE point sources similar to that achieved in previous studies. Overall, the properties of the GLIMPSE sources with and without 12.2 GHz counterparts are similar. The ATCA has been used to measure positions with arcsecond accuracy for 379 masers at the 22-GHz transition of water. The principal observation targets were 202 OH masers of the variety associated with star formation regions (SFR)s in the Southern Galactic plane. At a second epoch, most of these targets were observed again, and new targets of methanol masers were added. Many of the water masers reported here are new discoveries. Variability in the masers is often acute, with very few features directly corresponding to those discovered two decades ago. Within our current observations, less than a year apart, spectra are often dissimilar, but positions at the later epoch, even when measured for slightly different features, mostly correspond to the detected maser site measured earlier, to within the typical extent of the whole site, of a few arcseconds. The precise water positions show that approximately 79% (160 of 202) of the OH maser sites show coincident water maser emission, the best estimate yet obtained for this statistic; however, there are many instances where additional water sites are present offset from the OH target, and consequently less than half of the water masers coincide with a 1665-MHz ground-state OH maser counterpart. We explore the differences between the velocities of peak emission from the three species (OH, methanol and water), and quantify the typically larger deviations shown by water maser peaks from systemic velocities. Clusters of two or three distinct but nearby sites, each showing one or several of the principal molecular masing transitions, are found to be common. In combination with an investigation of correlations with IR sources from the GLIMPSE catalogue, these comparative studies allow further progress in the use of the maser properties to assign relative evolutionary stages in star formation to individual sites., Comment: 51 pages, 7 figures
