Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare condition with unique characteristics compared to female breast cancer (FBC). Despite its scarceness, there is growing evidence that MBC should not be studied and treated as FBC due to factors like later diagnosis stage and distinct genetic makeup. Retrospective observational study in the EpiChron Cohort, selecting all the prevalent patients with breast cancer between 2010 and 2019. Logistic models were used to determine associated comorbidities. Between 2010 and 2019, 105 MBC and 11,657 FBC patients were found in the EpiChron Cohort. MBC patients had a high mean age at diagnosis and number of comorbidities. Paying attention to comorbidity prevalences in breast cancer patients, it was clear that MBC patients tended to be prone to cardio-metabolic coexisting diseases, while FBC patients were more prone to hormone-, bone- and mental diseases. There were nine chronic conditions associated to MBC patients, but after a year-by-birth matching only four associations remained. Two of them were associated previously [odds ratio (95% confidence interval)]: "Disorder of lipid metabolism" [1.65 (1.03-2.64)] and "Genitourinary symptoms and ill-defined conditions" [2.03 (1.07-3.87)]; and the other two were new, "Anxiety disorders" [2.05 (1.09-3.87)] and "Osteoporosis" [3.58 (1.26-10.14)]. After comparing associated comorbidities in FBC with those in MBC, it seems MBC patients share some of them, but they have their own particular set of coexisting diseases. In fact, once a year-by-birth matching was performed in MBC patient cohort, it was more obvious MBC comorbidities behave more similar to none-Breast-Cancer male population than to FBC patients. Introduction: Male breast cancer accounts for 1% of all breast cancers. Its low frequency leads to a lack of awareness, resulting in significant diagnostic delays. Additionally, this limits the available evidence, which primarily uses diagnostic-therapeutic algorithms based on women., Objectives: To analyze the prevalence, clinical presentation, anatomical and pathological characteristics, and prognosis of male breast cancer using one of the largest series available. Secondarily, to compare our data with studies conducted in women., Materials and Methods: A multicenter, observational, descriptive, retrospective study was conducted in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain, from 1995 to 2022 including men with a pathological diagnosis of breast cancer., Results: A total of 148 patients were included, with a prevalence of 1%. The most common clinical presentation was a palpable retroareolar mass. Invasive ductal carcinoma was the most frequent type (88.89%), and luminal B was the predominant subtype (47.76%). Surgery was the most utilized treatment; mastectomy was performed in 90.34% and AL in 46.89%. At diagnosis, 52.46% had extramammary involvement. The recurrence rate was 24.1%, and the mortality attributed to the disease was 14.6%., Conclusions: There is a high rate of metastatic involvement at diagnosis, a high percentage of mutilating surgeries, and a high number of recurrences compared to available studies on males. Additionally, a worse prognosis is observed compared to breast cancer in women, despite these tumors having a less aggressive molecular subtype. Introduction: Statins and testosterone replacement therapy (TTh) have been inconsistently associated with a reduced risk of hormone-related cancers (HRCs, prostate [PCa], colorectal [CRC], and male breast cancers [BrCa]). Yet, the joint association of statins and TTh with the incidence of these cancers, and whether these associations vary by race, remains poorly understood. The objective of this retrospective cohort study is to examine the independent and joint effects of pre-diagnostic use of statins and TTh on the risk of HRCs, including PCa, CRC, and male BrCa., Materials: and Methods: In 105,690 men (≥65 yrs) identified using the SEER-Medicare 2007-2015 data, we identified 82,578 White and 10,256 Black men. Pre-diagnostic prescription of statins and TTh was ascertained for this analysis and categorized into four groups (Neither users, statins alone, TTh alone and Dual users). Multivariable Time-varying Cox proportional hazards and Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) models were performed., Results: We found inverse joint associations of statins and TTh with incident HRCs before (aHR: 0.39; 95 % CI: 0.35-0.44) and after 3 years of follow-up (aHR: 0.74; 95 % CI: 0.67-0.82). This included a lower risk for advanced stage HRC (only <3 years follow-up). Similar joint associations were identified with incident PCa, aggressive PCa, incident CRC, and its specific right- and left-sided CRC (only <3 years follow-up). In general, the inverse associations persisted among White (mainly <3 years follow-up) and Black men (high-grade HRC and <3 years follow-up). Findings from the AFT analysis were similar., Discussion: Pre-diagnostic use of statins and TTh were, independently and jointly, associated with reduced risks of HRC and specific cancer sites at three years of follow-up overall, and among White and Black men. Greatest associations of HRCs risk reduction were observed among dual users (statins plus TTh). Introduction: Men with Klinefelter Syndrome (KS) have been previously reported to have an increased risk of Male Breast Cancer (MBC). This systematic review provides the latest information regarding the incidence of MBC in the KS population compared to the standard male population and identifies mechanisms by which MBC may develop in KS., Material and Methods: Several databases were searched including PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE between October 2023 and March 2024. The review was conducted in accordance with the latest Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses-guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024551110). Overall, 332 papers were identified for screening. Standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) were calculated in comparison to national incidence figures. Additionally, a literature review was conducted looking at potential MBC mechanisms in KS., Results: Across Danish and British cohorts, incidence of MBC in KS was significantly higher than the general population: SIR 18.1 (95 % CI: 13.53 to 24.74), p<0.001. Breast cancer rates in women are still far higher (68.50 per 100,000 woman-years). MBC mechanism in KS may involve decreased micro-RNA (MIR-3648 and MIR3647) expression, increased oestrogen/progesterone receptor expression and exogenous androgen use., Conclusions: Rates of MBC are significantly raised in KS and a higher clinical suspicion of breast cancer should be considered when assessing men with KS. The true aetiology of MBC in KS, however, requires further research. Background: Male breast cancer (MBC) affects around 1 in 1000 men and is known to have a higher underlying component of high and moderate risk gene pathogenic variants (PVs) than female breast cancer, particularly in BRCA2 . However, most studies only report overall detection rates without assessing detailed family history., Methods: We reviewed germline testing in 204 families including at least one MBC for BRCA1 , BRCA2 , CHEK2 c.1100DelC and an extended panel in 93 of these families. Individuals had MBC (n=118), female breast cancer (FBC)(n=80), ovarian cancer (n=3) or prostate cancer-(n=3). Prior probability of having a BRCA1/2 PV was assessed using the Manchester Scoring System (MSS)., Results: In the 204 families, BRCA2 was the major contributor, with 51 (25%) having PVs, followed by BRCA1 and CHEK2, with five each (2.45%) but no additional PVs identified, including in families with high genetic likelihood on MSS. Detection rates were 85.7% (12/14) in MSS ≥40 and 65.5% with MSS 30-39 but only 12.8% (6/47) for sporadic breast cancer. PV rates were low and divided equally between BRCA1/2 and CHEK2. CONCLUSION: As expected, BRCA2 PVs predominate in MBC families with rates 10-fold those in CHEK2 and BRCA1 . Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in females globally. However, we know relatively little about trends in males. This study describes United Kingdom (UK) secular trends in breast cancer from 2000 to 2021 for both sexes. We describe a population-based cohort study using UK primary care Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) GOLD and Aurum databases. There were 5,848,436 eligible females and 5,539,681 males aged 18+ years, with ≥ one year of prior data availability in the study period. We estimated crude breast cancer incidence rates (IR), prevalence and survival probability at one-, five- and 10-years after diagnosis using the Kaplan-Meier method. Analyses were further stratified by age. Crude IR of breast cancer from 2000 to 2021 was 194.4 per 100,000 person-years for females and 1.16 for males. Crude prevalence in 2021 was 2.1% for females and 0.009% for males. Both sexes have seen around a 2.5-fold increase in prevalence across time. Incidence increased with age for both sexes, peaking in females aged 60-69 years and males 90+ . There was a drop in incidence for females aged 70-79 years. From 2003-2019, incidence increased > twofold in younger females (aged 18-29: IR 2.12 in 2003 vs. 4.58 in 2018); decreased in females aged 50-69 years; and further declined from 2015 onwards in females aged 70-89 years. Survival probability for females after one-, five-, and ten-years after diagnosis was 95.1%, 80.2%, and 68.4%, and for males 92.9%, 69.0%, and 51.3%. Survival probability at one-year increased by 2.08% points, and survival at five years increased by 5.39% from 2000-2004 to 2015-2019 for females, particularly those aged 50-70 years. For males, there were no clear time-trends for short-term and long-term survival probability. Changes in incidence of breast cancer in females largely reflect the success of screening programmes, as rates rise and fall in synchronicity with ages of eligibility for such programmes. Overall survival from breast cancer for females has improved from 2000 to 2021, again reflecting the success of screening programmes, early diagnosis, and improvements in treatments. Background: Male breast cancer (MBC) is a rare disease. Although several large-scale studies have investigated MBC patients in other countries, the features of MBC patients in China have not been fully explored. This study aims to explore the features of Chinese MBC patients comprehensively., Methods: We retrospectively collected data of MBC patients from 36 centers in China. Overall survival (OS) was evaluated by the Kaplan-Meier method, log-rank test, and Cox regression analyses. Multivariate Cox analyses were used to identify independent prognostic factors of the patients., Results: In total, 1119 patients were included. The mean age at diagnosis was 60.9 years, and a significant extension over time was observed (P < 0.001). The majority of the patients (89.1 %) received mastectomy. Sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed in 7.8 % of the patients diagnosed in 2009 or earlier, and this percentage increased significantly to 38.8 % in 2020 or later (P < 0.001). The five-year OS rate for the population was 85.5 % [95 % confidence interval (CI), 82.8 %-88.4 %]. Multivariate Cox analysis identified taxane-based [T-based, hazard ratio (HR) = 0.32, 95 % CI, 0.13 to 0.78, P = 0.012] and anthracycline plus taxane-based (A + T-based, HR = 0.47, 95 % CI, 0.23 to 0.96, P = 0.037) regimens as independent protective factors for OS. However, the anthracycline-based regimen showed no significance in outcome (P = 0.175)., Conclusion: As the most extensive MBC study in China, we described the characteristics, treatment and prognosis of Chinese MBC population comprehensively. T-based and A + T-based regimens were protective factors for OS in these patients. Objective: This study aimed to examine the relative risk of risk factor in male and female breast cancer (BC) deaths in China and analyzed the changing trends in BC mortality rates from 1990 to 2019., Methods: Open data from the Global Burden of Disease database from 1990 to 2019 were analyzed to assess the number of BC deaths and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMR) in China. The age-period-cohort model was employed to study age effects, period effects, cohort effects, as well as local drift and net drift of the data, determining the impact of changing risk factors on crude mortality rates and ASMR of BC., Results: In 2019, the number of BC deaths across all age groups in China increased by 130.38% compared to 1990, with an increase of 125.68% in females and 648.80% in males. The ASMR for BC and male BC increased in 2019, while female BC ASMR declined. Overall, alcohol consumption and smoking as risk factors contributed to increased mortality rates of BC with advancing age. Over the entire study period, the net drift of alcohol consumption in females for BC was 0.06% (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.24% to 0.36%), while for smoking it was -0.64% (95% CI: -0.83% to -0.45%). For males, the net drift of alcohol consumption for BC was 6.75% (95% CI: 5.55% to 7.96%), and for smoking, it was 6.09% (95% CI: 2.66% to 9.64%)., Conclusion: Hence, improving awareness of BC-related risk factors and implementing prevention strategies are necessary to alleviate future BC burdens., (© 2024 Japan Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology.)

Breast cancer in men is a rare and understudied disease. Until recently, prospective studies and clinical trials on breast cancer treatments often excluded men. Treatment recommendations were generally extrapolated from the results of clinical trials that included only women. Significant efforts have been made to better understand the biological characteristics, the most effective treatments, and the outcomes of breast cancer in men, as well as to identify clinically relevant differences of this disease. Objective: To determine the characteristics and risk factors of breast cancer patients in a tertiary care setting., Methods: The retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation, Karachi, and comprised data of all patients diagnosed with breast cancer from March 2017 to December 2021. Demographic characteristics, clinical presentation, stage of the disease and histopathological characteristics were noted. Data related to all the variables was not available in all cases. Data was analysed using SPSS 23., Results: Of the 690 patients, 683(99%) were females and 7(1%) were males. The mean age at presentation was 49.3±13.5 years, while the mean duration of symptoms was 10.24±17.64) months. Most of the females were married 642(93%) and multiparous 484(70.9%), while 293(42.5%) had breastfed their children for >1 year, and 412(59.7%) had no history of contraception use. The most common stage at presentation was stage II (48.6%), and most patients had grade II 395(57.2%) invasive ductal carcinoma, with Luminal A molecular subtype noted in 287(41.6%) cases., Conclusions: The characteristics of breast cancer in the sample had certain distinctions compared to other populations. It is important to integrate all datasets and develop guidelines appropriate to Pakistani population.

Importance: In women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer, the risk of distant recurrence and death persists for at least 20 years from diagnosis. The risk of late mortality in men with HR+ breast cancer has not been reported., Objective: To report 20-year risks of breast cancer-specific mortality (BCSM) and non-BCSM in men with stage I to III HR+ breast cancer and identify factors associated with late BCSM., Design, Setting, and Participants: An observational cohort study was conducted of men diagnosed with HR+ breast cancer from 1990 to 2008, using population-based data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program. Men diagnosed with stage I to III HR+ breast cancer were included in the analysis. Cumulative incidence function was used to estimate the outcomes of baseline clinicopathologic variables regarding cumulative risk of BCSM and non-BCSM since diagnosis. Smoothed hazard estimates over time were plotted for BCSM. Fine and Gray multivariable regression evaluated the association of preselected variables with BCSM, conditional on having survived 5 years., Main Outcome Measure: BCSM., Results: A total of 2836 men with stage I to III HR+ breast cancer were included, with a median follow-up of 15.41 (IQR, 12.08-18.67) years. Median age at diagnosis was 67 (IQR, 57-76) years. The cumulative 20-year risk of BCSM was 12.4% for stage I, 26.2% for stage II, and 46.0% for stage III. Smoothed annual hazard estimates for BCSM revealed an increase in late hazard rates with each incremental node category, reaching a bimodal distribution in N3 and stage III, with each having peaks in hazard rates at 4 and 11 years. Among patients who survived 5 years from diagnosis, the adjusted BCSM risk was higher for those younger than 50 years vs older than 64 years, those with grade II or III/IV vs grade I tumors, and stage II or III vs stage I disease., Conclusions and Relevance: The findings of this study suggest that, in men with stage I to III HR+ breast cancer, the risk of BCSM persists for at least 20 years and depends on traditional clinicopathologic factors, such as age, tumor stage, and tumor grade. Among men with higher stages of disease, the kinetics of the BCSM risk appear different from the risk that has been reported in women.

Introduction: the occurrence of breast cancer in men is an indication for genetic counseling and must be systematically sought. The objective of this work was to describe the histopathological and molecular aspects of human breast cancer., Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with retrospective collection from January 2007 to September 2021, including all cases of male breast cancer diagnosed by histology with immunohistochemical examination. The variables studied were histopathological and molecular. The samples were fixed in 10% formalin and processed using the standard hematoxylin-eosin and immunohistochemistry technique., Results: A total of 8 cases of male breast cancer were collected. Each case underwent histological and immunohistochemical examination. Age ranged from 8 to 77 years with a mean age of 50.63±20.79. Consultation time of less than 12 months was common with the presence of a breast nodule as the reason. The left breast was as affected as the right breast. Tumor size T3 (5 cm and more) predominated with 3 cases. The nature of the sample received was: 04 biopsies and 04 lumpectomies. Infiltrative carcinoma of non-specific type was common: 7 cases (or 87.5%) with Elston and Ellis grade II in 75% of cases. Background: Male breast cancer (MBC) represents a rare subtype of breast cancer, with limited prognostic factor studies available. The purpose of this research was to develop a unique nomogram for predicting MBC patient overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS)., Methods: From 2010 to 2020, clinical characteristics of male breast cancer patients were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database. Following univariate and multivariate analyses, nomograms for OS and BCSS were created. Kaplan-Meier plots were further generated to illustrate the relationship between independent risk variables and survival. The nomogram's ability to discriminate was measured by employing the area under a time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and calibration curves. Additionally, when the nomogram was used to direct clinical practice, we also used decision curve analysis (DCA) to evaluate the clinical usefulness and net clinical benefits., Results: A total of 2143 patients were included in this research. Univariate and multivariate analysis showed that age, grade, surgery, chemotherapy status, brain metastasis status, subtype, marital status, race, and AJCC-T, AJCC-N, and AJCC-M stages were significantly correlated with OS. Lung metastasis, age, marital status, grade, surgery, and AJCC-T, AJCC-N, and AJCC-M stages were significantly correlated with BCSS. By comprising these variables, a predictive nomogram was constructed in the SEER cohort. Then, it could be validated well in the validation cohort by receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) curve and calibration plot. Introduction: The objective of this study was to examine the impact of the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic on the number of newly diagnosed breast cancer cases at Commission on Cancer (CoC)-accredited facilities relative to the United States (U.S.) population., Methods: We examined the incidence of breast cancer cases at CoC sites using the U.S. Census population as the denominator. Breast cancer incidence was stratified by patient age, race and ethnicity, and geographic location., Results: A total of 1,499,806 patients with breast cancer were included. For females, breast cancer cases per 100,000 individuals went from 188 in 2015 to 203 in 2019 and then dropped to 176 in 2020 with a 15.7% decrease from 2019 to 2020. Breast cancer cases per 100,000 males went from 1.7 in 2015 to 1.8 in 2019 and then declined to 1.5 in 2020 with a 21.8% decrease from 2019 to 2020. For both females and males, cases per 100,000 individuals decreased from 2019 to 2020 for almost all age groups. For females, rates dropped from 2019 to 2020 for all races and ethnicities and geographic locations. The largest percent change was seen among Hispanic patients (-18.4%) and patients in the Middle Atlantic division (-18.6%). Male breast cancer (MBC), one of the rare types of cancer among men where the global incidence rate is 1.8% of all breast cancers cases with a yearly increase in a pace of 1.1%. Since the last 10 years, the incidence has been increased from 7.2% to 10.3% and the mortality rate was decreased from 11% to 3.8%. Nevertheless, the rate of diagnoses has been expected to be around 2.6% in the near future, still there is a great lack in studies to characterize the MBC including the developed countries. Based on our search, it is evidenced from the literature that the number of risk factors for the cause of MBC are significant, which includes the increase in age, family genetic history, mutations in specific genes due to various environmental impacts, hormonal imbalance and unregulated expression receptors for specific hormones of high levels of estrogen or androgen receptors compared to females. MBCs are broadly classified into ductal and lobular carcinomas with further sub-types, with some of the symptoms including a lump or swelling in the breast, redness of flaky skin in the breast, irritation and nipple discharge that is similar to the female breast cancer (FBC). The most common diagnostic tools currently in use are the ultrasound guided sonography, mammography, and biopsies. Treatment modalities for MBC include surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, and targeted therapies. However, the guidelines followed for the diagnosis and treatment modalities of MBC are mostly based on FBC that is due to the lack of prospective studies related to MBC. Introduction: Occult breast cancer (OBC) consists of <0.1% of breast cancer cases in the United States. Male occult breast cancer (mOBC) has not been well-studied outside of case reports, and management is largely based on female OBC (fOBC) studies. We aim to examine the prevalence of mOBC among those in the National Cancer Database with breast cancer and describe treatment modalities received by mOBC compared to fOBC., Methods: The National Cancer Database was queried for patients with OBC from 2004 to 2018. Chi-Square test and Fisher's exact tests compared patient, clinical, and facility characteristics by sex. Treatment modalities [systemic therapy, radiation therapy, axillary lymph node dissection, modified radical mastectomy (MRM)] were compared. A subgroup analysis examined pathologic upstaging in patients who underwent MRM., Results: Of 23,374 male patients with breast cancer, 0.13% were identified to have mOBC [versus 0.09% in fOBC]. cN2/N3 disease was significantly more prevalent in the mOBC cohort (61.3%) than in the fOBC cohort (30.7%, P < 0.001). Receipt of axillary lymph node dissection or MRM was not significantly different by sex. Male OBC (mOBC) patients were less likely to receive trimodality treatment than fOBC patients. In patients who underwent MRM, more mOBC patients [75%] were pathologically upstaged as T+ after mastectomy than fOBC patients [30%, P < 0.001], questioning the adequacy of diagnostic workup for mOBC compared to fOBC., Conclusions: This review confirms mOBC as an extremely rare disease. Multimodal treatments have been highly utilized to optimize care in this patient population. Males account for 1% of all cases of breast cancer. With the aging of the world's population, the disease has exhibited a rise in incidence in recent decades. Male breasts are smaller than female breasts, making the disease easier to spot, but patients often do not report their cases in time due to a lack of awareness. The stage-to-stage prognosis of male breast cancer is comparable to that of their female counterparts. Due to the relative rarity of the disease and poor patient enrollment in large randomized studies, the optimal management of male breast cancer remains uncertain. This article presents a narrative review of male breast cancer in light of recent literature, with an emphasis on epidemiology, clinical features, and current management.

Purpose: Male breast cancer accounts for approximately 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses. Unfortunately, a lack of information exists regarding late effects of breast cancer treatment in men., Methods: An online survey directed towards male breast cancer patients was distributed via social medial and emails from June to July 2022. Participants were asked about their disease characteristics, treatments and side effects from the disease or treatment. Patients and treatment variables were reported via descriptive statistics. Univariate logistic regression was performed to evaluate associations between different treatment variables and outcomes expressed by odds ratio., Results: A total of 127 responses were analyzed. Median age of the participants was 64 years (range 56-71 years). A total of 91 participants (71.7%) revealed they experienced late effects secondary to their cancer or cancer treatment. The most concerning physical and psychological symptoms reported were fatigue and fear of recurrence respectively. Axillary lymph node dissection was associated with swollen arm and with difficulty in arm or shoulder movement. Systemic chemotherapy was related to bothersome hair loss and changes on interest in sex; and endocrine therapy was associated with feeling less masculine., Conclusion: Our study showed that men suffer several late effects from treatments for breast cancer. Lymphedema, difficulty with arm and shoulder movement, sexual dysfunction and hair loss should be discussed with males as it can be distressing for some patients and decrease their quality of life., (© 2023. To analyze and compare the clinicopathological characteristics of male breast cancer (MBC) among Chinese patients and those from East Asia and other regions. Clinicopathological data from 3 kinds of data sources, including 31 MBC patients in Jiangsu Provincial Hospital (JPH) from 2014 to 2021 in China, 20 literature data on East Asian MBC patients from 2014 to 2021, and 3102 MBC patients registered in the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) database from 2014 to 2019, were collected and retrospectively analyzed. The average ages of first-diagnosis MBC patients in JPH and East Asian patients were 59.7 and 62.3 years old, respectively, which were younger than those of SEER patients (66.5 years old). Between East Asian and SEER patients, the status or rates of main breast cancer type, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, breast subtype, and TNM stage were relatively close, and their differences were not statistically significant (P > .05). Differences were observed in chemotherapy, surgery, pathological grade, and lymph node positivity (P < .01). Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was observed between the JPH and East Asian patients (all P > .05). In JPH and SEER, linear regression relationships were observed between the lymph node positivity rate, tumor size, and histological grade. JPH and East Asian MBC patients were younger than SEER patients. Between East Asian and SEER patients, the status of the main breast cancer type, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, breast subtype, and TNM stage were similar, but there were differences in chemotherapy, surgery, pathological grade, and lymph node positivity. Current evidence on de novo metastatic breast cancer is based on data from women. This Swedish population-based cohort study compared the incidence over time and prognosis of de novo metastatic breast cancer between sexes using data from the Swedish National Quality Register for Breast Cancer. Joinpoint regression analysis was used to compare incidence trends in all stages (104 733 women, 648 men) and multivariate Cox regression analysis to investigate potential sex disparities in de novo metastatic breast cancer prognosis (6005 women, 41 men). For both sexes, increased trends were evident for cancer stages I and II, with a stabilizing trend at the later years for women, while stage III incidence remained stable. An increased trend for de novo metastatic breast cancer in women, and to a lesser extent in men, was observed. No difference in de novo metastatic breast cancer overall survival between sexes was observed (hazard ratio = 1.24; 95% confidence interval = 0.85 to 1.81). Introduction: Male breast carcinoma (MBC) is an uncommon disease, accounting for less than 0.5% of cancer diagnoses in men. Data on the prevalence thereof in Argentina are unknown., Primary Objective: To estimate the prevalence of a men's health history associated with MBC as well as the anthropometric and clinical characteristics of the study population., Methods: This cross-sectional study included all men according to original biological sex over 18 years of age with a history of breast cancer who sought care at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires [Italian Hospital of Buenos Aires] between January 2010 and December 2018., Results: We included 57 men with breast cancer. Their median age was 71 years. Of them, 53.06% had obesity and 24.53% had diabetes. With respect to men's health history, 5.56% (2/36) had infertility, 29.17% (14/48) had gynaecomastia and 60.71% (17/28) had sexual dysfunction. Some 63% (7/11) had androgen deficiency based on laboratory diagnosis; of them, 45.45% (5/11) had high gonadotropins., Conclusion: We identified similarities with the literature as to the prevalence of obesity, diabetes and infertility in patients with MBC. The prevalence of testosterone deficiency was higher than reported for men of the same age. Many of these factors support the need to examine the role of endogenous hormones. Background: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most burdensome cancers worldwide. Despite advancements in diagnostic and treatment modalities, developing countries are still dealing with increasing burdens and existing disparities. This study provides estimates of BC burden and associated risk factors in Iran at the national and subnational levels over 30 years (1990-2019)., Methods: Data on BC burden for Iran were retrieved from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study from 1990 to 2019. GBD estimation methods were applied to explore BC incidence, prevalence, deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and attributable burden to risk factors based on the GBD risk factors hierarchy. Moreover, decomposition analysis was performed to find the contribution of population growth, aging, and cause-specific incidence in the total incidence change. Age-standardized rates (per 100,000 population) and 95% uncertainty intervals (UI) were reported based on sex, age, and socio-demographic index (SDI)., Results: Age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) increased from 18.8 (95% UI 15.3-24.1)/100,000 in 2019 to 34.0 (30.7-37.9)/100,000 in 2019 among females and from 0.2/100,000 (0.2-0.3) to 0.3/100,000 (0.3-0.4) among males. Age-standardized deaths rate (ASDR) increased slightly among females from 10.3 (8.2-13.6)/100,000 in 1990 to 11.9 (10.8-13.1)/100,000 in 2019 and remained almost the same among males-0.2/100,000 (0.1-0.2). Age-standardized DALYs rate also increased from 320.2 (265.4-405.4) to 368.7 (336.7-404.3) among females but decreased slightly in males from 4.5 (3.5-5.8) to 4.0 (3.5-4.5). Of the 417.6% increase in total incident cases from 1990-2019, 240.7% was related to cause-specific incidence. In both genders, the BC burden increased by age, including age groups under 50 before routine screening programs, and by SDI levels; the high and high-middle SDI regions had the highest BC burden in Iran. Based on the GBD risk factors hierarchy, high fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and alcohol were estimated to have the most and the least attributed DALYs for BC among females, respectively., Conclusions: BC burden increased from 1990 to 2019 in both genders, and considerable discrepancies were found among different provinces and SDI quintiles in Iran. These increasing trends appeared to be associated with social and economic developments and changes in demographic factors. Improvements in registry systems and diagnostic capacities were also probably responsible for these growing trends. Raising general awareness and improving screening programs, early detection measures, and equitable access to healthcare systems might be the initial steps to tackle the increasing trends., (© 2023. Background: Breast cancer mortality in women has declined statistically significantly over the past several years. In men, it is unclear whether survival has changed over time. We evaluated changes in breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS) in male breast cancer over the past 3 decades., Methods: We evaluated men diagnosed with breast cancer between 1988 and 2017, reported in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results registry. Patients were categorized into 3 groups by year of diagnosis: 1988-1997, 1998-2007, and 2008-2017. BCSS and OS were estimated by Kaplan-Meier, and differences between groups were compared by log-rank test. Multivariable Cox regression evaluated the independent association of year of diagnosis with BCSS and OS. All tests were 2-sided., Results: We included 8481 men. Overall, BCSS at 5 years was 83.69%, 83.78%, and 84.41% in groups 1988-1997, 1998-2007, and 2008-2017, respectively (P = .86). There was no statistically significant difference in BCSS between the 3 groups within each stage of disease. Among all patients, OS at 5 years was 64.61%, 67.31%, and 69.05% in groups 1988-1997, 1998-2007, and 2008-2017, respectively (P = .01). In adjusted Cox models, each additional year of diagnosis had no statistically significant association with BCSS (hazard ratio = 1.00, 95% confidence interval = 0.99 to 1.01, P = .75), but there was statistically significant improvement in OS (hazard ratio = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.98 to 0.99, P = .009)., Conclusions: Over the past 3 decades, there has been no statistically significant improvement in BCSS in male breast cancer. In the overall population, the incidence of breast cancer in men is lower than in women. Men's breast cancer awareness is affected both by the low incidence of breast cancer in men and by the presence of a perception that breast cancer can only be seen in women in society. This study aims to determine this awareness and guide future studies on improving social awareness. This study examined male and female patients aged 18 to 75 years who were admitted to our hospital's general surgery outpatient clinic. A questionnaire containing questions about male breast cancer was administered to the patients, and the study was conducted face-to-face voluntarily. A total of 411 patients, 270 female and 141 male, participated in the study. The results showed that 61.1% of the participants were unaware of the possibility of breast cancer in men. Evaluation of the relationship between awareness and gender revealed that women were more knowledgeable than men ( p = .006). Educational status also had a significant influence on awareness ( p = .001). Awareness of male breast cancer in society is low. Raising public awareness of this issue will enable men to be diagnosed earlier, at a lower stage, and thus to better respond to treatment, increasing their survival time.

Background: With increasing survival after cancer diagnoses, second primary cancers (SPCs) are becoming more prevalent. We investigated the incidence and site of non-breast SPC risks following male breast cancer (BC)., Methods: PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were systematically searched for studies reporting standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) for SPCs published by March 2022. Meta-analyses used the generic inverse-variance method, assuming a random-effects model. We evaluated SIRs for overall SPCs, site-specific risks, by age at BC onset, time since BC onset and geographic region. We assessed study quality using routine techniques., Results: Eight population-based retrospective cohort studies were identified. SIRs ranged from 1.05 to 2.17. The summary SIR estimate was 1.27 (95% CI: 1.03-1.56, I 2 : 86%), and there were increased colorectal (SIR: 1.29, 95% CI: 1.03-1.61), pancreatic (SIR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.05-2.55) and thyroid (SIR: 5.58, 95% CI: 1.04-30.05) SPC risks. When an outlying study was excluded, the summary SIR for men diagnosed with BC before age 50 was 1.50 (95% CI: 1.21-1.85), significantly higher than men diagnosed at older ages (SIR: 1.14, 95% CI: 0.98-1.33)., Conclusions: Male BC survivors are at elevated risks of developing second primary colorectal, pancreatic and thyroid cancers. Background: Male breast cancer (MBC) is rare; however, its incidence is increasing. There have been no large-scale reports on the clinicopathological characteristics of MBC in Japan., Methods: We investigated patients diagnosed with breast cancer in the Japanese National Clinical Database (NCD) between January 2012 and December 2018., Results: A total of 594,316 cases of breast cancer, including 3780 MBC (0.6%) and 590,536 female breast cancer (FBC) (99.4%), were evaluated. The median age at MBC and FBC diagnosis was 71 (45-86, 5-95%) and 60 years (39-83) (p < 0.001), respectively. MBC cases had a higher clinical stage than FBC cases: 7.4 vs. 13.3% stage 0, 37.2 vs. 44.3% stage I, 25.6 vs. 23.9% stage IIA, 8.8 vs. 8.4% stage IIB, 1.9 vs. 2.4% stage IIIA, 10.1 vs. 3.3% stage IIIB, and 1.1 vs. 1.3% stage IIIC (p < 0.001). Breast-conserving surgery was more frequent in FBC (14.6 vs. 46.7%, p = 0.02). Axillary lymph node dissection was more frequent in MBC cases (32.9 vs. 25.2%, p < 0.001). Estrogen receptor(ER)-positive disease was observed in 95.6% of MBC and 85.3% of FBC cases (p < 0.001). The HER2-positive disease rates were 9.5% and 15.7%, respectively (p < 0.001). Comorbidities were more frequent in MBC (57.3 vs. 32.8%) (p < 0.001). Chemotherapy was less common in MBC, while endocrine therapy use was similar in ER-positive MBC and FBC. Perioperative radiation therapy was performed in 14.3% and 44.3% of cases., Conclusion: Japanese MBC had an older age of onset, were more likely to be hormone receptor-positive disease, and received less perioperative chemotherapy than FBC., (© 2022. Breast cancer (BC) is mainly considered a disease in women, but male BC (MaBC) accounts for approximately 1.0% of BC diagnoses and 0.5% of malignant neoplasms in the western population. The stigmatization of MaBC, the fact that men are less likely to undergo regular health screenings, and the limited knowledge of health professionals about MaBC contribute to men being diagnosed at more advanced stages. The aim of this article is to increase the visibility of MaBC among urologists, who have more contact with male patients. This review highlights key points about the disease, the risk factors associated with MaBC, and the options for treatment. Obesity and increased population longevity are among the important risk factors for MaBC, but published studies have identified family history as extremely relevant in these patients and associated with a high penetrance at any age. There is currently no screening for MaBC in the general population, but the possibility of screening in men at high risk for developing BC can be considered. The treatment of MaBC is multidisciplinary, and, because of its rarity, there are no robust clinical studies evaluating the role of systemic therapies in the management of both localized and metastatic disease. Purpose: To identify the practice patterns related to use of surveillance mammography in male breast cancer (MaBC) survivors., Methods: Using administrative claims data from OptumLabs Data Warehouse, we identified men who underwent surgery for breast cancer during 2007-2017. We calculated the proportion of men who had at least one mammogram (a) within 13 months for all patients and (b) within 24 months amongst those who maintained their insurance coverage for at least that length of time after surgery. Multivariate logistic regression modeling was used to identify factors associated with mammography within each timeframe., Results: Out of 729 total MaBC survivors, 209 (29%) underwent mammography within 13 months after surgery. Among those who had lumpectomy, 41% underwent mammography, whereas among those who had mastectomy, 27% had mammography. Amongst 526 men who maintained consistent insurance coverage for 24 months after surgery, 215 (41%) underwent mammography at least once during that 24-month period. In this cohort, the proportion who had at least one mammogram during the 24-month period was 49% after lumpectomy and 40% after mastectomy. In a multivariate logistic regression model, more recent diagnosis (2015+) and older age at diagnosis were associated with lower odds of undergoing mammography, while receipt of radiation was associated with higher odds of undergoing mammography., Conclusions: Although recent ASCO guidelines recommend surveillance mammography after lumpectomy, a minority of MaBC survivors undergo surveillance mammography, even after lumpectomy. Introduction: Male breast cancer (MBC) is rare, representing <1% of all breast cancers. Treatment recommendations have been extrapolated from trial data of female breast cancer patients. This study aims to report our institutional experience of MBC across a 20 year period, analyse the survival outcome and prognosis of this group against female breast cancer patients treated at the same centre., Methods: Clinical, histopathological, treatment and survival data of male and female breast cancer patients treated between Jan 1999 and July 2019 at Singapore General Hospital and National Cancer Centre Singapore were identified and analysed., Results: Fifty-seven male patients were identified. The median age at diagnosis was 63 years. Majority had invasive ductal carcinoma (86%) and presented at an early disease stage: 70.2% presented as Tis/T1/T2 and 49.1% had no axillary nodal involvement. 84.2% had a simple mastectomy with either a sentinel lymph node biopsy or axillary clearance. The median follow up was 5.69 years for males and 5.83 years for females. The median survival was 11.86 years for males and 16.3 years for females. At 5 years, overall survival (OS) was 69.9% (52.3-82.1%) and disease free survival (DFS) was 62.9% (44.9-76.5%) for males compared with OS 83.8% (83.21-84.39%) and DFS 74.5% (73.91-75.09%) for females., Conclusion: MBC remains understudied. Our institutional data indicates that good long term survival in South-East Asian patients can be achieved with treatment protocols that are similar to female breast cancer. Purpose: Breast cancer is uncommon in men and its aetiology is largely unknown, reflecting the limited size of studies thus far conducted. In general, number of children fathered has been found a risk factor inconsistently, and infertility not. We therefore investigated in a case-control study, the relation of risk of breast cancer in men to infertility and number of children., Patients and Methods: We conducted a national case-control study in England and Wales, interviewing 1998 cases incident 2005-17 and 1597 male controls, which included questions on infertility and offspring., Results: Risk of breast cancer was statistically significantly associated with male-origin infertility (OR = 2.03 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.18-3.49)) but not if a couple's infertility had been diagnosed as of origin from the female partner (OR = 0.86 (0.51-1.45)). Risk was statistically significantly raised for men who had not fathered any children (OR = 1.50 (95% CI 1.21-1.86)) compared with men who were fathers. These associations were statistically significantly present for invasive tumours but not statistically significant for in situ tumours., Conclusion: Our data give strong evidence that risk of breast cancer is increased for men who are infertile. Background: Breast cancer is a well-recognised late adverse effect in female childhood cancer survivors (CCSs), especially after chest radiotherapy; information on subsequent male breast cancer (SMBC) is limited. We summarised the existing evidence on SMBC after childhood cancer in a systematic review and investigated the risk of SMBC among males in a Pan-European cohort., Methods: We searched Medline/PubMed for cohort studies and case reports/series that assessed SMBC after childhood cancer (≤21 years). Furthermore, we analysed data on SMBC in the PanCareSurFup cohort, reporting standardised incidence ratios (SIRs), absolute excess risks (AERs), and 5- and 10-year survival rates., Results: The systematic review included 38 of 7080 potentially eligible articles. Cohort-specific SMBC frequencies were 0-0.40% (31 studies). SMBC occurred after a follow-up ranging from 24.0 to 42.0 years. Nine case reports/series described 11 SMBC cases, occurring 11.0-42.5 years after primary childhood cancer. In the PanCareSurFup cohort (16 SMBC/37,738 males; 0.04%), we observed a 22.3-fold increased risk of SMBC relative to the general male population (95% CI 12.7-36.2; absolute excess risk/100,000 person-years: 2.3, 95% CI 1.3-3.7). The five- and ten-year survival rates after SMBC diagnosis were 60.3% (95% CI 35.6%-85.0%) and 43.0% (95% CI 16.1%-69.9%), respectively. Clear evidence of risk factors did not emerge from these comprehensive efforts., Conclusions: Compared to the general population, male CCSs have an elevated risk of developing subsequent breast cancer, although the absolute risk is low. Objectives: To investigate breast cancer-specific mortality by early breast cancer (EBC; Stages I-IIIC) subtype; incidence of high-risk indicators for recurrence (defined in monarchE trial); and mortality risk difference by those who did/did not meet these criteria., Materials and Methods: Analyses included patients with initial EBC diagnosis between 2010-2015 from Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) data (n = 342,149). Cox proportional hazards models and Kaplan-Meier estimates examined mortality among 228,031 patients, by subtype (hormone receptor [HR]-positive [+], human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 [HER2] negative [-]; triple negative [TNBC]; HR+, HER2+; HR-, HER2+). Incidence and mortality among patients who did/did not meet monarchE clinicopathological high-risk criteria were examined., Results: Among patients with HR+, HER2- EBC, histologic Grade 3 (vs. Grade 1) was the most influential factor on mortality (hazard ratio, 3.61; 95%CI, 3.27, 3.98). Among patients with TNBC, ≥4 ipsilateral axillary positive nodes (vs. node negative) was the most influential factor on mortality (hazard ratio, 3.46; 95%CI, 2.87, 4.17). For patients with HR-, HER2+ or HR+, HER2+ EBC, tumor size ≥5 cm (vs. <1 cm) and ≥4 ipsilateral axillary positive nodes were the most influential factors on mortality. The 60-month mortality rate for the 12% of patients within the HR+, HER2- EBC group meeting monarchE clinicopathological high-risk criteria was 16.5%, versus 7.0% (Stage II-III and node positive) and 2.8% (Stage I or node negative) for those not meeting criteria. The 60-month mortality rate for patients with TNBC was 18.5%., Conclusion: Mortality risk and the relative importance of risk factors varied by subtype. monarchE clinicopathological high-risk criteria were associated with increased mortality risk among patients with HR+, HER2- EBC. Patients with HR+, HER2- EBC, and monarchE clinicopathological high-risk criteria experienced risk of mortality similar to patients with early TNBC. Purpose: Several male breast cancer (MBC) susceptibility genes have been identified, but the MBC risk for individuals with a pathogenic variant in each of these genes (i.e., penetrance) remains unclear. We conducted a systematic review of studies reporting the penetrance of MBC susceptibility genes to better summarize current estimates of penetrance., Methods: A search query was developed to identify MBC-related papers indexed in PubMed/MEDLINE. A validated natural language processing method was applied to identify papers reporting penetrance estimates. These penetrance studies' bibliographies were reviewed to ensure comprehensiveness. We accessed the potential ascertainment bias for each enrolled study., Results: Fifteen penetrance studies were identified from 12,182 abstracts, covering five purported MBC susceptibility genes: ATM, BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, and PALB2. Cohort (n = 6, 40%) and case-control (n = 5, 33%) studies were the two most common study designs, followed by family-based (n = 3, 20%), and a kin-cohort study (n = 1, 7%). Seven of the 15 studies (47%) adjusted for ascertainment adequately and therefore the MBC risks reported by these seven studies can be considered applicable to the general population. Based on these seven studies, we found pathogenic variants in ATM, BRCA2, CHEK2 c.1100delC, and PALB2 show an increased risk for MBC. Background: Male breast cancer is a considerably rare condition and only accounts for 1% of all breast cancer cases. Due to limited public awareness, the condition is likely to present late, leading to late diagnosis and treatment worsening morbidity and mortality. This article aims to identify the focus and most influential research on male breast cancer. Objective Identify the most influential papers in male breast cancer., Methods: Search on Web of Science using the search terms 'Male', 'Breast Cancer' and "Male breast cancer" to identify all full manuscripts in English language and were ranked by the total number of citations. The top 100 articles were then further analysed according to subject, author, journal, year and country of publications., Results: The mean number of citations per paper was 96. Most cited paper was by Thorlacius, S et al. evaluating the relationship between BRCA2 and female breast cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer and ovarian cancer. Cancer is the journal with the most published papers and received most citations in the male breast cancer research field. The USA contributed 49 of the manuscripts in the top 100. The most studied topic was risk factors for male breast cancer, with 20 articles., Conclusions: The most cited papers identified in this study described the advance in the knowledge of genetics and epidemiology in male breast cancer and has led to improvements in the 4 management of the disease. Most of the highly cited articles in this field were published in high impact journals and had accumulated at least 100 citations to date, reflecting their quality and impact. By collating the most influential publications in this field, this analysis can serve to identify knowledge gaps in male breast cancer research as well as to help identify what makes a paper impactful and citable.

Background/aim: The use of multi-gene panels for germline testing in breast cancer enables the estimation of cancer risk and guides risk-reducing management options. The aim of this study was to present data that demonstrate the different levels of actionability for multi-gene panels used in genetic testing of breast cancer patients and their family members., Materials and Methods: We performed an analysis in our clinical database to identify breast cancer patients undergoing genetic testing. We reviewed positive results in respect of risk estimation and management, cascade family testing, secondary findings and information for treatment decision-making., Results: A total of 415 positive test reports were identified with 57.1%, 18.1%, 10.8% and 13.5% of individuals having pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants in high, moderate, low and with insufficient evidence for breast cancer risk genes, respectively. Six point seven percent of individuals were double heterozygotes., Conclusion: Germline findings in 92% of individuals are linked to evidence-based treatment information and risk estimates for predisposition to breast and/or other cancer types. The incidence rates of ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) have increased rapidly over the last two decades in all patient groups including older women and men. DCIS in aged women has an excellent prognosis and the risk of local recurrence is lower compared to younger patients. Since adjuvant radiation after lumpectomy and endocrine treatment do not significantly influence overall survival a de-escalation of treatment especially in case of grade 1 lesions in women with comorbidities can be considered. Pure DCIS in men is a very rare disease representing approximately 5% of all male breast cancers. The most common type of DCIS in men is a papillary carcinoma mostly of low or intermediate grade developing from large central ducts, since male breast typically lacks lobules and terminal duct-lobular units (TDLU). A male DCIS of high grade is rare and mostly associated with severe hyperestrogenism, e.g., in case of gynecomastia. The most common risk factors in men are increasing age, high estrogen levels and positive family history. DCIS in men is usually a clinically apparent disease. The most common symptoms described in the literature are palpable, often cystic mass, coexisting or isolated nipple discharge (mostly bloody, in rare cases watery) or nipple alteration. A standard treatment among men with DCIS is a simple mastectomy without radiation. The prognosis is excellent., (Celsius.)

Purpose: Our study aimed to explore temporal trends and survival benefit of contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) in male breast cancer (MBC)., Methods: Men with stage I-III unilateral breast cancer between 1998 and 2016 were identified from the surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER). We compared CPM rate over the study period using the Cochrane-Armitage test for trend. Logistic regression model was used to test for factors predicting CPM. Survival analysis was conducted in patients who underwent CPM or unilateral mastectomy (UM) with a first diagnosis of unilateral breast cancer. Kaplan-Meier curve and univariate and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to compare overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) between CPM and UM groups. Propensity score matching was adopted to balance baseline characteristics., Results: 5118 MBC cases were included in the present study, with 4.1% (n = 209) patients underwent CPM. The proportion of men undergoing CPM increased from 1.7 in 1998 to 6.3% in 2016 (P < 0.0001). Young age, recent years of diagnosis, higher tumor grade and lower T stage were significantly associated with CPM. A cohort of 3566 patients were enrolled in survival analysis with a median follow-up of 65 months. CPM was associated with better OS (HR 0.58, 95% CI 0.37-0.89, P = 0.022) rather than BCSS (HR 0.57, 95% CI 0.29-1.11, P = 0.153) compared with UM. In propensity score-matched model, CPM was not an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR 0.83, 95% CI 0.46-1.52, P = 0.553) and BCSS (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.39-2.47, P = 0.970)., Conclusion: Our study revealed a dramatic increase in CPM utilization among MBC, especially in young patients. However, CPM provides no survival benefit for MBC compared with UM, indicating the decision of CPM should be fully discussed., (© 2021. Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women worldwide. It is the most prevalent cancer and leading cause of death among South African (SA) women. The increasing incidence of breast cancer is a major health concern. Until now, the distribution of breast cancer demography, stage at first presentation, and histological characterisation have not been studied in Limpopo Province, SA., Objectives: To record the demographic profile of breast cancer patients, to report the stage at the time of presentation and to characterise the pattern of malignant disease in Limpopo, SA., Methods: We conducted a retrospective descriptive review of the records of patients managed at Pietersburg Hospital oncology and Mankweng Hospital breast cancer clinics during the period 1 March 2015 - 28 February 2017. Stata was used to analyse data., Results: A total of 248 patients with a mean age of 55 years were included for analysis, 7 males (3%) and 241 females (97%). Capricorn and Vhembe districts constituted 32% and 27% respectively. The majority (69%) of patients were diagnosed with disease stage III or IV. The most common histological type was invasive ductal cell carcinoma (IDC) (87%)., Conclusions: More than one-third of patients were younger than 50 years. The majority (69%) had an advanced breast cancer (stage III or IV). We recommend provision of mammography services in regional hospitals.

Objectives: Recent trends in male breast cancer have been inadequately studied. We updated mortality trends in selected countries and regions worldwide using most recent available data and we predicted figures for 2020., Methods: We extracted official death certification data for male breast cancer and population estimates from the WHO and the Pan American Health Organization databases, from 2000 to 2017. We computed age-standardized (world population) death rates for selected countries and regions worldwide. We used joinpoint regression analysis to identify significant changes in trends and to predict death numbers and rates for 2020., Results: In 2015-2017, Central-Eastern Europe had a rate of 2.85/1 000 000, and Russia of 2.22, ranking among the highest. North-Western and Southern Europe, the European Union as a whole and the USA showed rates ranging between 1.5 and 2.0. Lower rates were observed in most Latin American countries, with values below 1.35/1 000 000, in Australia, 1.22, and Japan, 0.58. Between 2000-2004 and 2015-2017, age-adjusted death rates decreased between 10 and 40% in North-Western Europe, Russia, and the USA, and between 1.5 and 25% in the other areas under study, except Latin America (+0.8%). Except for Central-Eastern Europe, predicted rates for 2020 were favourable., Conclusion: Advancements in management are likely the main drivers of the favourable trends in male breast cancer death rates over the last decades. Purpose: Black breast cancer patients have worse clinical outcomes than their White counterparts. There are few studies comparing clinical outcomes between Black male breast cancer (MBC) and female breast cancer (FBC) patients. The objective of this study is to examine differences in presentation, treatment, and mortality between Black MBC and FBC., Methods: The National Cancer Database was queried for all Black MBC and FBC patients, ages 18-90, with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer diagnosed between 2010 and 2016. Hormone receptor positivity was defined as estrogen receptor-positive, progesterone-positive and HER 2-negative cancer. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were compared between MBC and FBC patients on bivariable analysis. After propensity score matching, overall survival was evaluated using the log-rank test and Cox proportional hazards., Results: Compared to FBC patients, MBC patients had higher rates of metastatic disease (stage 4, MBC 4.4% vs. FBC 2.6%, p < 0.001), larger tumors (tumor size < 2 cm, MBC 32.1 vs. FBC 49.1%, p < 0.001) and a higher percentage of poorly differentiated tumors (grade 3, MBC 28.5% vs. FBC 21.4%, p < 0.001). MBC patients had lower rates of hormone therapy (MBC 66.4% vs. FBC 80.7%, p < 0.001) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (MBC 5.8% vs. FBC 7.5%, p = 0.05) than FBC. On propensity score matched analysis, Black MBC patients had a higher overall mortality (p25 of 60 months vs. 74 months) compared to FBC patients (p = 0.0260)., Conclusion: Among hormone receptor-positive Black MBC and FBC patients, there are sex-based disparities in stage, hormone therapy use and overall survival., (© 2021. Breast cancer is one of the rarest types of cancer in men. Its incidence increases with age, as in women. Neurofibromatosis type 1 is an autosomal dominant genetic disease that predisposes to many cancer types. Neurofibromatosis and breast cancer have been more frequently distinguished and better studied in women. Characteristically, estrogen, progesterone receptors, negative, and overexpression of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) are detected in patients with female neurofibromatosis breast cancers. In cases reported so far, estrogen and progesterone receptors have been evaluated as positive and HER2 negative in male patients. With the high possibility of breast cancer development in female patients with neurofibromatosis at an earlier age, prompt and careful evaluation is required in terms of both examination and radiological imaging. Unfortunately, there are no thorough recommendations for breast cancer follow-up in male patients with neurofibromatosis. Background: Breast cancer in men accounts for fewer than 1 % of all breast cancer cases diagnosed in men and women. Genes which predispose to male breast cancer include BRCA1 and BRCA2. The role of other genes is less clear. In Poland, 20 founder mutations in BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, PALB2, NBN, RECQL are responsible for the majority of hereditary breast cancer cases in women, but the utility this genes panel has not been tested in men., Methods: We estimated the prevalence of 20 alleles in six genes (BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, PALB2, NBN, RECQL) in 165 Polish male breast cancer patients. We compared the frequency of selected variants in male breast cancer cases and controls., Results: One of the 20 mutations was seen in 22 of 165 cases (13.3%). Only one BRCA1 mutation and two BRCA2 mutations were found. We observed statistically significant associations for PALB2 and CHEK2 truncating mutations. A PALB2 mutation was detected in four cases (OR = 11.66; p < 0.001). A CHEK2 truncating mutation was detected in five cases (OR = 2.93;p = 0.02)., Conclusion: In conclusion, we recommend that a molecular test for BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2 and CHEK2 recurrent mutations should be offered to male breast cancer patients in Poland., (© 2021. Background: Breast cancer is rare in men, and information on its causes is very limited from studies that have generally been small. Adult obesity has been shown as a risk factor, but more detailed anthropometric relations have not been investigated., Methods: We conducted an interview population-based case-control study of breast cancer in men in England and Wales including 1998 cases incident during 2005-2017 at ages younger than 80 years and 1597 male controls, with questions asked about a range of anthropometric variables at several ages. All tests of statistical significance were 2-sided., Results: Risk of breast cancer statistically significantly increased with increasing body mass index (BMI) at ages 20 (odds ratio [OR] = 1.07, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.02 to 1.12 per 2-unit change in BMI), 40 (OR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.07 to 1.16), and 60 (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.09 to 1.19) years, but there was also an indication of raised risk for the lowest BMIs. Large waist circumference 5 years before interview was more strongly associated than was BMI with risk, and each showed independent associations. Associations were similar for invasive and in situ tumors separately and stronger for HER2-positive than HER2-negative tumors. Of the tumors, 99% were estrogen receptor positive., Conclusions: Obesity at all adult ages, particularly recent abdominal obesity, is associated with raised risk of breast cancer in men, probably because of the conversion of testosterone to estrogen by aromatase in adipose tissue. Purpose: Male breast cancer is an uncommon disease, and population-based information regarding prognostic factors is limited. Most cases are hormone receptor (HR) positive; however, the association of tumor subtype with overall survival (OS) and breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) is unclear., Methods: Using SEER data, we identified men with invasive breast cancer between 2010 and 2017 with known HR and HER2 status. We examined tumor subtypes by patient characteristics and performed multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses to determine the associations of each variable with OS and BCSS., Results: We included 2389 men with a median follow-up of 43 months (IQR 19-68). Median age was 66 years. Tumor subtype distribution was 84.1% HR+/HER2-, 12.7% HR+/HER2+ , 0.8% HR-/HER2+, and 2.3% triple-negative (TN). In univariate analysis, OS at 5 years was 76.5% for HR+/HER2-, 65.1% for HR+/HER2+ , 84.2% for HR-/HER2+, and 48.1% for TN (p < 0.0001). Of all subtypes, TN had the worst BCSS (p < 0.0001). Stage, tumor subtype and race were significantly associated with OS and BCSS in multivariate analysis. Adjusted Cox hazard ratios for OS by tumor subtype with HR+/HER2- as reference were 1.55 for HR+/HER2+ (p = 0.001), 1.1 for HR-/HER2+ (p = 0.888), and 3.59 for TN (p < 0.001)., Conclusion: We observed significant differences in survival outcomes by tumor subtype. Poor outcomes among men with HER2+ and TN disease suggest possible under-treatment, aggressive tumor biology, and/or more advanced disease at presentation. Studies to better understand the inferior survival for men with these subtypes are warranted and will likely require international collaboration., (© 2021.
