1671 m. In 1671, a new, Franciscan, printing house was opened in Vilnius. For this city, it was the time of recovery from the Deluge (the devastation wrought by Muscovites in 1655–1661), when construction on new churches began, acclaimed European artists came here to work, and the cultural and religious life grew livelier. The Franciscan Printing House (oficina) had existed in Vilnius for over a century (1671–1781, with breaks) and published more than 160 publications, of which 13 were in the Lithuanian language. This was the only printing house in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and one of the two in the entire Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth belonging to the Franciscan Conventuals (the other Franciscan printing house had briefly, in 1769?–1774, operated in Lwów; the Bernardines did not have their own printing enterprises). Information about the activities of the Franciscan Printing House can be found in works by historians of the Church and monastic orders, handbooks of book studies and universal encyclopedias; this printing house is an object of complex research by book historians, but its history and publishing output are still in need of in-depth studies. The article overviews the context of the establishment of the Franciscan printing house, providing an outline of its development. It also offers a thematic, linguistic, and artistic analysis of the publications of this printing house now held in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (67 titles). These are both the object of the article and a source for the research. The publications, now in the holdings of the Library’s Rare Books Department, do not make a separate collection, being an integral part of the 17th–18th-century Lituanica Collection. They came to the Library from various personal and institutional libraries or collections along with other print publications of those times. The present research confirmed an assessment by book historians that the repertoire of the Franciscan printing house was not wide, most of its publications being on religious topics. A majority of books from this printing house in the holdings of the Wroblewski library are those with religious content (86,6 %). Fictional and sociopolitical literature makes just 7,5 %, and treatises on other subjects, even less: state and law, 2,9 %; history, 1,5 %; and mathematics, 1,5 %. Linguistically, the 67 titles are distributed as follows: 17th-century publications in Latin are 10; and in Polish, 10; 18th-century publications in Polish are 32; in Latin, 13; and in Lithuanian, 2. Most of the authors and editors of the publications were Franciscans, but the printing house gladly published works by Benedictine, Dominican, and Basilian authors, as well as those by monks from other orders (the Carmelites, the Piarists, and the Missionaries). The authors of translated works formed a minority. The opinion that publications of the Franciscan printing house lack printing and artistic quality, which is now prevailing in historiography, may be accepted only partially. In reality, Franciscan publications often have proofreading mistakes, but some of their books are extremely well printed. Ornamentation in books from this printing house reminds that of other Vilnius printing houses of the times (Vilnius Academy’s, Basilians’, Piarists’) – the same ornamental plates used to be copied, rented, purchased, etc. There are no original engravings in the Franciscans’ publications from the holdings of the Wroblewski Library. To conclude, the Franciscan printing house, one of the so-called smaller printing houses of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, played its role in the history of printing of the Grand Duchy: its publications merged into the entirety of the printed matter in the Grand Duchy, making a significant addition. The publications of this printing house in the holdings of the Wroblewski Library represent the everyday life of 17th–18th-century Vilnius printing houses. Even though the thematic distribution of the publications is not diverse (with religious literature being predominant), they nevertheless demonstrate general trends in the publishing of those times (in subjects, languages, authors, etc.). Keywords: Franciscan printing house; history of printing in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania; Vilnius publications; printing heritage; Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

Axelis Walteris.

Esminiai žodžiai: dienoraščiai; XIX a. antros pusės Lietuvos literatūra lenkų kalba; Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių biblioteka; Emilija Beniovskytė-Vrublevskienė (Emilia z Beniowskich Wróblewska); Tadas Stanislovas Vrublevskis (Tadeusz Stanisław Wróblewski); Marija Vrublevskytė (Maria Wróblewska); Augustinas Anicetas Vrublevskis (Augustyn Anicety Wróblewski). Emilia z Beniowskich Wróblewska (1830–1886) is the mother of the founder of the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, Tadeusz Stanisław Wróblewski (1858–1925). She was an educator, a litterata, and the wife of Tadeusz Wróblewski’s father, the homeopathic doctor Eustachy Edward Wróblewski (1826–1908). Owing to the efforts of Wróblewska’s son, her memory is immortalized at the name of the Library of Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski established in 1912 in Vilnius. Kept in the Manuscripts Department of the Wroblewski Library (F9 and F75), the manuscript legacy of Emilia Wróblewska is of importance for the history of the establishment and activities of the Wroblewski Library, and will take a place of honor in Bibliopolis, the future museum of the Lithuanian book. A total of seven diary notebooks written by Emilia Wróblewska are extant today. Two of them are dedicated to her three children: Tadeusz Stanisław, eldest daughter Maria Wróblewska (1860–1878), and another son, Augustyn Anicety Wróblewski (1866–after 1913). The largest in length (175 entries), longest in time (27 years) and most consistently written diary is devoted to her eldest son Tadeusz. It is as if it were a long conversation with her son, a series of letters to him, continued until the diarist’s death (1886). The diary for the eldest daughter Maria contains 77 entries by her mother. She started writing it when Maria was five years old, but after the girl’s death (1878), the mother did not write anything in this diary for a long time, and only eight years later, in 1886, she put in an only entry for her son Augustyn on the eve of his 21st birthday – the mother used the same notebook as a diary for Augustyn. Of the seven Wróblewski children, only Tadeusz Stanisław and Augustyn lived to a mature age. Kazimierz took his own life at seventeen, Maria died at eighteen, and three other children died in childhood. As to five remaining diaries, Wróblewska wrote them for herself (ad se ipsam). In them, the diarist gives account of her emotional experiences in chronological order. Writing for her is spiritual therapy. This is especially obvious from the diary entitled “Moje myśli” (“My thoughts”), which also shows the diarist’s literary talent. Emilia Wróblewska also expressed herself in other literary works, besides the diaries: she translated her father’s works into Polish, attempted to translate literature for servants and even wrote for them a textbook herself. Her entire manuscript legacy not only testifies to her having been a versatile creator, but also represents an attractive object for Bibliopolis – Emilia Wróblewska is a symbol of a creative, but dramatically-fated woman of the late 19th century. Keywords: diaries; 19th-century Polish-language literature in Lithuania; Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences; Emilia z Beniowskich Wróblewska; Tadeusz Stanisław Wróblewski; Maria Wróblewska; Augustyn Anicety Wróblewski.

1930–1940 m. The Society of 27 Book Lovers in Kaunas that functioned in 1930–1940 played an important role in the history of Lithuanian culture. It signified the outset of the organized bibliophilic movement in Lithuania. The society, brought together by Vytautas Steponitis, Paulius Galaunė, Viktoras Cimkauskas and other like-minded people, contributed immensely in shaping the tradition of bibliophilic activity, upraised the culture of the Lithuanian book, and developed aesthetic circulation and bibliophilic book publishing (10 publications were published). All of this was done by a dozen (ranging in number from 15 to 21) devoted book lovers and bibliophiles par excellence. Their bibliophilic hobby transcended the boundaries of amateur activities, and the Society operated as a professional publishing house giving rise to the publishing of scientific periodicals of book science. The article, based on the archives of this Society kept in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, analyses personal expression of the members of the Society, their interrelationships, seeks an answer leading to the fact that extremely prominent figures managed to get together for fruitful bibliophilic activities, examines the atmosphere that prevailed in the amateur meetings of the Society of 27 Book Lovers, publishing and various other activities in the daily life. It is not intended to bring to light all the members of the Society, the article focuses only on some of the most prominent personalities and those moments of their activity that have not been previously examined by other researchers. It was concluded that the rotation of the amateur members of the Society of 27 Book Lovers was natural, determined by various life circumstances: the Society, which launched its activities in 1931 had 15 members, and until 1940, another 12 new members joined in, however the Society lost 10 of them as well. The number of seceding members was determined by the distancing of some members from bibliophilic ideas, lack of time (professional activities, positions of high responsibility), etc. However, the core of the Society (about 10 to 12 people) remained stable at all times and ensured the productive work of the Society. The productive activities of the Society were directly influenced by the chairmen elected for the term of 3 years (V. Steponaitis, Kazys Bizauskas, Juozas Balčiūnas-Švaistas), however, other members, even without being on the board, acted as contributors to various activities. The Society operated according to a very formalized procedure (recording of meetings, board meetings, excursions and other activities, approval of minutes, etc.), however, at the same time the archives of the Society testify that a cosy amiable atmosphere of communication and a sense of humour prevailed. This group of people was of one mind, they knew each other for a long time, almost all of them were of the same generation and of similar age. Differing political views did not interfere with bibliophilic activities. The correspondence of the members of the board on the failures of the publishing of publications reveals intercommunion, the realized meaning of the cultural work, the significance of V. Steponaitis as a personality uniting the Society in its activities. The activities of the Society of 27 Book Lovers demonstrated that such work could be carried out only by a strong group of exceptional figures, the activities of whom distinctly represented the elite bibliophilia, and hence, the tradition of the organized bibliophilic movement organically stemming even from the 19th century. The 27 Book Lovers managed to extend this tradition.

Lietuva (Lithuania) ,Jolanta Dapkievicz. XVI a.

The XXVII Book Lovers’ Society, active in Kaunas, 1930–1940, cultivated elite bibliophilia: this organization, which had a fixed number of members (no more than 27), considered its two most important tasks to be publishing of bibliophilic publications (it published 10 publications that became standards of exemplary publishing) and promotion of the aesthetically designed book. The present article takes a look at the publishing activities of this society including financial matters, editorial process, production (printing) and distribution of the society’s publications. The article eschews an analysis of the repertoire and artistic design of publications, as these issues have already been examined by other researchers. The study is based on the archive of the XXVII Book Lovers’ Society, kept in the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences (F59), and various published sources. It is concluded that the Society operated like a professional publishing house: its members could organize editorial work, production and printing themselves, and could decide collectively on the issues of developing the repertoire. The archive shows that the publishing activities of the XXVII Book Lovers’ Society were conducted making records of all financial transactions and exercising strict control over them: an audit commission would regularly check the revenue and expenditure balance. All financial matters were accounted for at annual general meetings. The publishing activities of the Society were governed by its regulations and internal rules, but much of the credit was due to the self-sacrificial enthusiasm of its members. In the general context of Lithuanian publishing of that period, the publications of the Society are outstanding by their design and content, i. e. by understanding what design matches what genre, what combinations of typeface, format, paper and other elements of design are necessary to produce a beautiful book, so that it can be described in Marija Urbšienė’s words “A beautiful book is, doubtless, a work of art”. Even though the XXVII Book Lovers were a self-regulating organization, all the elements of publishing process worked seamlessly – the publishing activities of the Society were rooted in responsibility, exacting standards and professionalism. In the summer of 1940, the activities of the Society had to stop because of the Soviet occupation, the publishing of the third volume of the Society’s chronicle was never completed.

Based on the initiative of Duke Nicolaus Christophorus Radziwill the Orphan (1549–1616), Great Marshal of Lithuania (1579–1586) and Voivode of Vilnius (1604–1616), a map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, titled Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae caeterumque regionum illi adiaciencium exacta descriptio…, was printed in 1613 in the printing house of Willem Janszoon (Blaeu), which was famous at that time for the manufacture of globes and wall maps. It was drawn by Hessel Gerritsz (Lat. Gerardus) and prepared by a team of professionals gathered by N. Ch. Radziwill. The written part of the map (which addresses the reader), separately published also in 1613, glued together from three pages, and designated to the buyers of the wall map of the GDL, was prepared by the famous GDL painter Tomasz Makowski (1575–1630). From 1613 to 1631, this map of the GDL functioned only as a wall map. When W. Blaeu began to publish atlases as well, he included the 1613 wall map of the GDL, which was pressed from four copper plates and included a narrow ornamental edging, in his atlas Appendix Theatri A.Ortelii et Atlantis G. Mercatoris. The readers of the atlas could not observe the territory of the GDL in its entirety, as it was depicted in four pages. Thus, already in another edition of the atlas that was published during the same year of 1631, the map of the GDL was changed and its copper plates were reordered: the segment depicting the lower part of the Dnieper was cut away, and the whole ornamental edging of the map was discarded. Two maps then took shape: one of the GDL’s territory, glued together from four disproportionate plates, and one depicting the lower part of the Dnieper, glued together from two plates. Such a large map of the GDL’s territory (73 × 75 cm) was collapsible and would be included in Blaeu’s atlases near a written piece on Lithuania in the editions of 1631, 1634–1649, and even in one that was published in c. 1670. This map, unconventional for usage in atlases (as it was not bound), was replaced in 1649 by another map made on the basis of the original 1613 variant by W. Blaeu’s son, Joan. This particular specimen was a smallerscale version of the GDL’s map and was oriented toward the west, not the north. However, as Blaeu’s printing house began to include the 1613 map of the GDL in its atlases, this does not mean that it had also stopped publishing it as a wall map – the buyer could have it made in the same printing shop and purchase, for example, a wide ornamental edging as a supplement to their order (e.g., the specimen belonging to the Uppsala University Library). Only two copies of this 1613 wall map of the GDL are extant, and these can be found in the Uppsala University Library and the Herzogin Anna Amalia Library in Weimar. These specimens are unique in that they allow us to see how an authentic 1613 wall map of the GDL looks like, together with T. Makowski’s text about Lithuania, also marked by a 1613 date. Knowing the history of how the copper plates of this map were used, we may state that the Weimar copy is of earlier origin than the one housed in Uppsala (at least by one year within the 1631 period). This article examines the 1613 map of the GDL from the perspective of book science – we provide an analysis of the publications devoted to the 1613 map of the GDL based on the aspect of how it was published. An all-encompassing historiographical study of the 1613 GDL map is not the goal of the present paper. By chronologically analyzing the works of Lithuanian and foreign authors in an historiographical retrospective, it is emphasized how the various authors writing about this map chose to consider its bibliographical information, how did the perspective regarding the structure of this map shift, etc. [...].

Kultūros paveldas / Cultural heritage ,Lietuva (Lithuania) ,Muziejai / Museums - Abstract
The article addresses the issues of the traditional and the modern museum and examines the present state of affairs with European book museums, wherein the need in a modern participatory museum clashes with the tradition of the usual, academically-oriented one. We provide examples from practical work of both traditional and restructured (modern) book museums. These examples show that some new technologies applied in museums grow obsolete faster than we would like. The article discusses newly-created European museums exhibiting large collections of manuscript and print heritage, personally visited by the author. Their experience is valuable in starting a book museum in Lithuania. In the today’s world book museums (and this also pertains to the future Lithuanian book museum) can no longer remain such as they were at the acme of their popularity in the 8th–9th decade of the 20th century. The article further expands on a modern museum, whose main purpose is that of communication, and whose displays and exhibitions are based on new museum narratives that educate the visitors, send them a message about various values of book culture and the relationship with the past, and help them orienting themselves in the present.

PERIODICAL publishing , *MEETING minutes , *SCIENCE periodicals , *PUBLISHING , *ELITE (Social sciences) , *SCIENCE publishing - Abstract
The Society of 27 Book Lovers in Kaunas that functioned in 1930-1940 played an important role in the history of Lithuanian culture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on the initiative of Duke Nicolaus Christophorus Radziwill the Orphan (1549-1616), Great Marshal of Lithuania (1579-1586) and Voivode of Vilnius (1604-1616), a map of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, titled Magni Ducatus Lithuaniae caeterumque regionum illi adiaciencium exacta descriptio..., was printed in 1613 in the printing house of Willem Janszoon (Blaeu), which was famous at that time for the manufacture of globes and wall maps. Lietuva (Lithuania) ,Vilnius.
Egzilyje gyvenusio lietuvio dailininko intelektualo asmeninės bibliotekos kūrimo istorija tampa asmenybės kūrybinės raiškos iliustracija ir įasmenintu lietuvių išeivijos kultūros faktu The article analyses the genesis of private library (about 9500 items) of Kazys Varnelis, renowned Lithuanian artist, collector and bibliophile. The book-loving nature of this library owner, and his individualism, are an important factor in the acquisition of books for such a library. Kazys Varnelis’s methods of compiling his private library were purchase, exchange, and gifts. The sources of his Lithuanian language and literature section, his bibliophilic publications and his cartographic collection were antiquarian book dealers and auctions, private individuals, book fairs, etc. K. Varnelis got information about the books he wanted from various book catalogues, antiquarian book dealers that he visited on his travels around Europe and his links with other book lovers. K. Varnelis’ most intensive library building was done in Chicago, were he lived from 1949 to 1978. When he lived in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, (1978–1997) his collection was further enhanced and perfected. In 1998, Varnelis’ personal library was transferred to its current location in Vilnius. Its formation has continued without interruption; the bibliophilic collections have been enlarged with several of his life-long desiderata. The acquisition methods and sources of Varnelis’ library highlight the personal traits of a true bibliophile. The history of the personal library of a Lithuanian artist in exile reflects the evolution of his creative personality and can be seen as a personalisation of a Lithuanian cultural phenomenon.

Bibliofilo emocinis santykis su knyga yra pagrindas mėginant suvokti bibliofilijos psichologines nuostatas bei apibrėžti bibliofilijos esmę This article looks at a previously unstudied aspect of book ownership insignia: as indicators of a book’s bibliophilic value. What determines a book’s bibliophilic value is its origin (with evidence in the form of ownership insignia: handwritten inscriptions, stamps, bookplates, super bookplates). For this research, the corpus of ownership insignia in the books of the personal library of the famous collector and bibliophile Kazys Varnelis were chosen. This is a rich store of Lithuanian, Western European and US book insignia. An example of insignia of bibliophilic value is a handwritten dedication by Friedrich Wilhelm IV (Kaiser of Prussia) to his nephew in a luxurious bibliophilic publication of the New Testament (Berlin, 1879). This increases this book’s financial value and gives it some inherent bibliophilic value. Another example is a book in K. Varnelis’ library with a super bookplate of French bibliophile De Thou (1553–1617), which was described and reproduced in G.A.F. Bogeng’s historic study „Die Grossen Bibliophile”. Therefore, it is seen that the presence of specific book insignia may serve to enhance the bibliophilic value of a book. Book insignia that bear witness to previous ownership also links the previous owners to the present owner(s), thereby giving the book some individual, almost spritual value. These books are witnesses of history, a link between the past and the present. This is very important for bibliophiles. A bibliophile’s emotional relationship with a book is essential to understanding the bibliophile’s state of mind and defining his essence.

A hundred of super ex-libris, which belonged to 93 owners, are described in the 2nd volume of the catalogue of super ex-libris available in the library of the University of Warsaw. These book marks were created over the period 1528–1787. Over half of all these marks (54) date back to the 16th c., 38 – to the 17th c. and only 8 – to the 18th c. The ex-libris of Augustinus Rotundus (around 1520–1582), Sigismund II Augustus’s secretary, writer humanist, Matthias Decho (died in 1607), the canon of Sandomierz, Jan Fryderik Sapieha (1680–1751), the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL), Barbara Zawisza Radziwiłł (1690–1770), Jan Szalapski (late 17th c.), the GDL Instigator, should be distinguished from the described Lithuanistic super ex-libris. Janusz Radziwiłł was presented in 1599 by an ornate gold-plated coat-of-arms super ex-libris, embossed into the parchment of the cover of the polemic book “Between Jesuits and Evangelists” by Adrian Junga published in the same year in Krakow. Lithuanian libraries neither have super ex-libris of Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł the Orphan (1549–1616), another prominent cultural figure in GDL, of the time, which were also created by engravers and book binder from Vilnius. They were particularly ornate and of high artistic level. Thus, the new catalogue of super ex-libris in the library of the University of Warsaw is useful for the historians of the Lithuanian book and culture in general, employees of the ancient publications departments in scientific libraries who face the problems of the attribution of super ex-libris every day. A similar catalogue is badly needed in Lithuania. The more so, because the treasures of ancient publications (including super ex-libris) in Lithuanian libraries are certainly no worse than those in Warsaw.

Famous Lithuanian artist, collector and bibliophile Kazys Varnelis has gathered a large collection of rare and old books, maps, artworks and museum treasures, which have been kept at the Kazys Varnelis Museum in Vilnius since 1998. In all there are 800 items on display now at the museum (140 of which are works of Kazys Varnelis), shown in 36 of the museum‘s halls. The large and well-structured library of 7,000 items, at first was put together as a library meeting professional interests, and which gradually developed into a bibliophile‘s library created with a particular purpose. This article examines the collections of Lithuanian books and bibliophilic publications, seeking to reveal the meaning and importance of the book as a museum exhibit, describing the functions of the book as a museum exhibit: 1) informational-introductory (the books exhibited for visitors during excursions or official receptions along with other exhibits of the museum); 2) historical (the book is an exhibit, preserving historical authenticity); 3) visual-aesthetic (books, especially bibliophilic books, due to artistic binding or quality, are displayed as examples of book art). The article examines, how these functions express themselves in a concrete context (the personal library of Kazys Varnelis) and a more common context (the whole of Kazys Varnelis’ museum). Along with this, there are attempts to determine the place and importance of the book as an exhibit in the Kazys Varnelis Museum, revealing the viewpoint of Kazys Varnelis towards the book as a work of art, the role of the book (and other factors) in creating a unique atmosphere for the library and this museum.

Garsaus LDK karo vado ir valstybės veikėjo Jono Karolio Chodkevičiaus (1560-1621) asmeninė biblioteka beveik netyrinėta. Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekoje surasta 12 knygų su rankraštiniais J. K. Chodkevičiaus nuosavybės įrašais. Tai XVI a. antrosios pusės-XVII a. pradžios istoriniai ir karybos veikalai, kronikos, antikos autorių raštai. Į Vilniaus universiteto biblioteką knygos pateko kartu su donaciniu LDK didikų Sapiegų rinkiniu "Bibliotheca Sapiehana". Matyt, J. K. Chodkevičiaus duktė Ona, 1620 m. ištekėjusi už Jono Stanislovo Sapiegos, dalį bibliotekos bus gavusi kaip kraitį. Šios knygos apibūdina bibliotekos savininką kaip plačios erudicijos, išsilavinusią, bibliofilinių polinkių asmenybę. The article deals with the fate of the private library of Joannes Carolus Chodkiewicz (1560-1621), the Elder of Samogitia (1599-1616), Field Hetman of the Army of Lithuania (1600-1605), Administrator of Livonia (1603-1621), Grand Hetman (1605-1621), and Palatine of Vilnius (1616-1621). He led armies against the Swedes, Russians and Turks, and was one of the outstanding military leaders of his time not only in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, but in Europe, too. Twelve books from the 16th and 17th centuries with the manuscript inscription Ex Libris Joannis Caroli Chodkiewicz were found in the Vilnius University Library. These are chronicles, military and historical books, and works by Antique writers. The books were received by Vilnius University as part of the library of the well-known Sapieha family. The daughter of Joannes Carolus Chodkiewicz, Anna, was married to Joannes Carolus Sapieha (1585-1635). After their death, the books ended up with Casimirus Leo Sapieha (1609-1656), Anna's brother-in-law. In 1655, according to the testament of Casimirus Leo Sapieha, his whole library (known as "Bibliotheca Sapiehana") was bequeathed to Vilnius University. Since there were no prior investigations of the private library of Joannes Carolus Chodkiewicz, these 12 books are a valuable source for the research on the history of private libraries in Lithuania.

K. Varnelio kolekcijoje – nemaža senųjų XVI–XVIII a. knygų originalų. Dauguma jų – ryškūs knygos meno pavyzdžiai. Senųjų knygų grožis pats savaime daro jas bibliofilinės knygos objektu. XIX–XX a. bibliofilinių knygų K. Varnelio kolekcijoje sukaupta daugiausia. Minėtinos knygos su garsių Anglijos knygos iliustratorių (Thomo Bewicko, George‘o Cruikshanko, Johno Tennielio, Johno Everetto Millais, Dante Gabrielio Rossetti, Thomo Rowlandsono, Johno Flaxmano, Josepho Mallordo, Williamo Turnero) iliustracijomis. Deramą vietą. K. Varnelio kolekcijoje užima knygotyros leidiniai. Tai knygos istorijos, knygos meno istorijos, bibliofilijos istorijos veikalai ir žurnalai, patys tapę bibliofiliniais leidiniais: išleisti ant gero popieriaus, puikiai apipavidalinti, originaliai įrišti. Dauguma kolekcijos knygų gali būti minimos kaip savaip vertingos, turinčios savo vietą vienos ar kitos šalies knygos istorijoje. K. Varnelio kolekcija – išskirtinis reiškinys šiandienės Lietuvos asmeninių bibliotekų kontekste. This article discusses perhaps one of the largest and one of the most valuable collections of Kazys Varnelis’ library, which are the bibliophilic publications. A thematic and chronological description of this collection is provided. There are clear concepts in this entire bibliophilic collection, including publications of high-quality printing, artistic binding, good paper, and small print runs, which are most often numbered. There are about 1500 such publications currently in the Kazys Varnelis library, with 150 of them from elite printing houses. There are a number of old books from the 16th-18th centuries in the Kazys Varnelis collection. Many of them are brilliant examples of book art. The beauty of old books in and of itself makes them a bibliophilic object. Most of the bibliophilic books in Kazys Varnelis’ collection are from the 19th and 20th century. The above-mentioned books include illustrations from famous English book illustrators (such as Thomas Bewick, George Cruikshank, and William Turner). Book science publications take up a worthy place in Kazys Varnelis’ collection. These are works and magazines on book history, book art history and bibliophilia history, which themselves have become bibliophilic publications: published on good paper, wonderfully formatted, and bound in an original way. Many books in the collection could be mentioned as valuable in their own way, having their own place in the book history of one or another country. Kazys Varnelis’ collection is an exceptional phenomenon in the context of personal libraries in Lithuania today.

Chronologinės rinkinio ribos – nuo inkunabulų (XV a.) iki Lietuvos Respublikos paskelbimo (1918). Rinkinyje daug reikšmingų senųjų lietuviškų knygų: Konstantino Sirvydo Punktai sakymų (Vilnius, 1629) ir Dictionarium trium linguarum (Vilnius, 1713), Friedricho Wilhelmo Haacko sudarytas lietuvių- vokiečių kalbų žodynas (Halė, 1730), Christiano Gottliebo Mielcke‘s parašyta lietuvių kalbos gramatika (Karaliaučius, 1800), taip pat gausu XIX amžiaus retų lietuviškų knygų. K. Varnelio bibliotekoje yra retų kronikų (Hartmano Schedelio Liber chronicarum (Augsburgas, 1497), Sigismundo Herbersteino Rerum Moscoviticarum comentarii (Baselis, 1556), Martino Kromerio Polonia, sive De origine et rebus gestis Polonorum (Kelnas, 1589) ir kt.) ir kitų retenybių. Straipsnyje daug dėmesio skiriama ir K. Varnelio bibliotekos knygų proveniencijoms. K. Varnelio biblioteka – vertingas Lietuvos knygos istorijos ir asmeninių bibliotekų tyrinėjimo šaltinis The article analyses the collection of books (about 7,000 volumes) in the personal library of Kazys Varnelis, renowned artist, collector and bibliophile. These include old Lithuanian books and books about Lithuania published in other countries. K. Varnelis amassed a large collection of old and rare books, maps and other museum-worthy items connected with the history of Lithuania, most of it purchased from various European antiquarian shops and auctions. Until 1998 the collection was housed at Stockbridge (USA), and from 1998 – at his house in Lithuania. There are currently 254 old Lithuanian books and books about Lithuania in his library. The age of items in the collection ranges from incunabula (15th century) to the proclamation of the first Lithuanian Republic (1918). There are many valuable items in the collection: Konstantinas Sirvydas’ Punktai sakymų (Vilnius, 1629) and Dictionarium trium linguarum (Vilnius, 1713); Friedrich Wilhelm Haack’s Lithuanian-German dictionary (Halė, 1730); Christian Gottlieb Mielcke’s Grammar of the Lithuanian Language (Königsberg, 1800); and other famous Lithuanian rare books of the 19th century. The article reviews the Lituanica in the private library of Thomas Niewodniczanski. Now living in Germany Thomas Niewoclniczanski was born in Vilnius in 1933. His father was a famous Polish physicist, the professor of Vilnius University. His grandfather was the director of the Vilnius electricity power station and his great-grand father worked as a doctor in Vilnius. So Thomas Niewodniczanski has strong emotional relations with Vilnius and this region. There are approximately 2600 items of early 15-18th century printed maps of Poland and Lithuania in his collection. It is the largest especially valuable collection of this kind in the world. There is also a very interesting and valuable collection of vellum and paper documents in the private library of Thomas Niewodniczanski. It deals with famous representatives of the Lithuanian aristocracy, Vilnius bishops etc. Some of the documents are interesting for the history of Lithuanian culture. In the collection of autographs there are documents of such famous historic persons as Sigismund Augustus, Barbara Radzivilla and many others. The items of the collection of Thomas Niewodniczanski were exhibited in different towns of Europe. The catalogs of these exhibitions were published as well. Now the exhibition of his collection is planned to be organized at the Vilnius University Library.

Straipsnyje apžvelgiami svarbiausi dabar Lietuvoje esantys senosios kartografijos rinkiniai: Vilniaus universiteto ir Lietuvos mokslų akademijos bibliotekų, Lietuvos nacionalinio muziejaus ir asmeninis prof. Kazio Varnelio rinkinys, kuriame sukaupta 150 XVI-XX amžių Lietuvos žemėlapių kolekcija. Didžiausia kartografijos kolekcija sukaupta Vilniaus universiteto bibliotekoje (1021 atlasų, iš jų 477 XV–XVIII amžiaus, 10 000 žemėlapių). Atlasų rinkinio pagrindas – Vilniaus universiteto profesoriaus Joachimo Lelewelio (17861861) asmeninis kartografijos rinkinys. Šio kartografijos rinkinio pagrindas – XIX – XX a. Chronologinės rinkinio ribos XVIII –XX a. Straipsnyje aptariami reprezentatyviausi minėtų kolekcijų žemėlapiai ir atlasai. Taip pat straipsnyje pateikiama kartografijos kolekcijų formavimosi apžvalga, nagrinėjamos žemėlapių autorystės ir datavimo problemos The article deals with the main collections of the early cartography in Lithuania deposited at the Vilnius University Library, the Library of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the National Museum of Lithuania and the private collection of Prof. Kazys Varnelis, which holds a collection of 150 maps of XVI–XX century Lithuania. The largest cartographic collection is at the Vilnius University Library, consisting of 1,021 atlases including 477 atlases of the XV–XVIII century and about 10,000 maps. The core of this collection comes from the private collection of Joachim Lelewel (1786–1861), a professor of the Vilnius University and famous historian, geographer and cartographer. His items make up 70% of the collection of old atlases at the Vilnius University Library. The collection includes many famous masterpieces of early cartography such as 13 atlases by Claudius Ptolemy, 15 atlases by Gerhard Mercator, 17 items by Abraham Ortelius, 44 by Willem and Joannes Blaeu, 26 by Jan Janszon and 8 by Johann Baptista Homann. In 1983 Vilnius University Library received a bequest of 133 maps from the estate of Vaclovas Dargužas (born in 1920). The Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences possesses 5,280 maps in 931 atlases. This collection is the most valuable for its XIX–XX C. maps. The National Museum of Lithuania has 43 and more than 1,600 maps, of which 900 are topographic. This article discusses the more outstanding items of these collections and gives an overview of how the cartographic collections were assembled, including issues of authorship and chronological verification.
