Functional abnormalities of the amygdala are central to major depressive disorder (MDD) neurobiology; therefore, we examined whether amygdala intrinsic connectivity (IC) can differentiate EO-MDD from AO-MDD in a cohort of adult MDD patients.Subjects and methods: Twenty-one EO-MDD (age of onset ≤18 years), 31 AO-MDD patients (age of onset ≥19 years), and 19 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (7 minutes). Amygdala seed-based resting-state functional connectivity was compared between groups.Results: AO-MDD patients showed loss of inverse left amygdala–left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex IC and increased inverse left amygdala–left inferior parietal IC, compared to both HCs and EO-MDD. EO-MDD showed a switch from inverse to positive IC with right dorsomedial prefrontal cortex, compared to HCs and AO-MDD. This effect was removed when we controlled for illness burden.Conclusion: Alterations in amygdala IC with the default-mode network were specifically related to EO-MDD, whereas amygdala IC with executive cognitive control regions was preferentially disrupted in AO-MDD. Increased illness burden, an important clinical marker of EO-MDD, accounted for its specific effects on amygdala IC. Brain imaging has the potential for validation of clinical subtypes and can provide markers of prognostic value in MDD patients. While terrestrial decomposition has been extensively researched to produce reliable methods of estimating the post-mortem interval of remains, there is limited literature documenting aquatic decomposition. Consequently, the ability to reliably estimate the post-mortem submersion interval for remains in water bodies is poor, despite markedly varying insect succession between aquatic and terrestrial decomposition This study was conducted to compare decomposition on Sus domesticus carcases in terrestrial and artificial lentic environments, aiming to provide more detailed characterization of aquatic decomposition and document the role of terrestrial organisms in the accompanying insect succession. Three trials consisting of six stillborn piglets in lentic environments and three in terrestrial environments were observed daily over a period of 12 months. Decomposition stage and morphological changes between terrestrial and lentic piglets were noted. Insects were sampled from remains and reared to adulthood for identification. Lentic decomposition was prolonged relative to terrestrial decomposition, reflecting aquatic decomposition characteristics accompanied by terrestrial insect colonization. Diptera were more prevalent on terrestrial remains, and Coleoptera in the lentic environments, with few dipteran taxa common between environments. Results show the variability of decomposition stages, characteristics and insects between terrestrial and lentic remains, and are discussed with regard to implications for aquatic forensic casework. This study aimed to unravel the effects of climate, topography, soil, and grazing management on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in the grazing lands of north-eastern Australia. We sampled for SOC stocks at 98 sites from 18 grazing properties across Queensland, Australia. These samples covered four nominal grazing management classes (Continuous, Rotational, Cell, and Exclosure), eight broad soil types, and a strong tropical to subtropical climatic gradient. Temperature and vapour-pressure deficit explained >80% of the variability of SOC stocks at cumulative equivalent mineral masses nominally representing 0-0.1 and 04).3 m depths. Once detrended of climatic effects, SOC stocks were strongly influenced by total standing dry matter, soil type, and the dominant grass species. At 0-0.3 m depth only, there was a weak negative association between stocking rate and climate-detrended SOC stocks, and Cell grazing was associated with smaller SOC stocks than Continuous grazing and Exclosure. In future, collection of quantitative information on stocking intensity, frequency, and duration may help to improve understanding of the effect of grazing management on SOC stocks. In order to evaluate the feasibility of using [Nb.sub.3]Sn superconductors to generate fields as high as 23.5 T in NMR magnets, the Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories [BPNL] has initiated a conductor development and evaluation program. We report here the results of one part of that program involving the Wang NMR/LBL team. Based on a preliminary magnet design, and after extensive discussion with various conductor manufacturers, conductors which had been optimized for use at fields above 20 T were purchased. These conductors have been evaluated with respect to mechanical and electrical properties. In particular, the strain dependence of the critical current density has been measured at 1.8 K and 23.5 T. These results, together with coil tests, are reported in this paper.
