Descartesin mukaan ihmisille tyypillinen generatiivinen, hierarkkisiin representaatioihin nojaava luovuus on peräisin yhdestä lähteestä, olipa kyse luovuudesta kielen, ajattelun, matematiikan, musiikin tai visuaalisen taiteen piirissä. Tämä lähde oli jakamaton, immateriaalinen sielu. Kognitiotieteessä luovuus on perinteisesti nähty modulaarisena ilmiönä, jolloin esimerkiksi kielen lauseiden rakenne poikkeaa täysin matemaattisten olioiden rakenteesta. Kukin luova järjestelmä nojaa omaan, alakohtaiseen mutta generatiiviseen representaatiojärjestelmäänsä. Aivan viime aikoina Descartesin yhden luovuuden hypoteesi on alkanut saada yhä enemmän kannatusta myös kognitiotieteessä, lingvistiikassa ja aivotutkimuksessa. Käyn artikkelissani läpi tähän kehitykseen johtaneita empiirisiä ja teoreettisia syitä, sekä tarkastelen karteesiolaisen luovuusteorian merkitystä erityisesti kielitieteen kannalta. Aivojen ei-modulaaristen keskusprosessien tietämys on edistynyt hitaasti, sillä kaikki tunnetut keskusprosessien mallit ovat johtaneet laskennan kompleksisuuden ongelmaan. Yhteistä näille malleille on olettaa ihmisen keskuskognition olevan vain näennäisesti monimutkainen systeemi. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan hypoteesia, jonka mukaan aivot olisivat osittain aidosti monimutkainen järjestelmä. "Aito monimutkaisuus" määritellään algoritmisen informaatioteorian avulla. Ihmisten käyttämä kieli eroaa eläinten käyttämistä kommunikaatiojärjestelmistä. Ihmisen aivoissa on 'erottava tekijä', joka mahdollistaa luonnollisen kielen oppimisen spontaanisti ihmislasten, mutta ei muiden eläinten tapauksessa. Artikkelissa luodaan katsaus siihen, mikä tämä erottava tekijä on, miten se toteutuu ihmisen aivoissa ja miten se on syntynyt biologisessa evoluutiossa. Lähteinä käytetään aivotutkimusta, evoluutioteoriaa, genetiikkaa, vertailevaa eläintiedettä ja kielitiedettä. Johtopäätöksenä esitetään, että ihmisen evolutiivisessa lähimenneisyydessä olisi tapahtunut aivojen (erityisesti Brocan alueen) organisaatiota muuttanut mutaatiosarja, joka mahdollistaa yksilönkehityksen varhaisvaiheessa kielikykyyn liittyvien formaalien symbolien rekursiivisen käsittelyn ja johtaa myöhäisemmässä vaiheessa nykyihmisen rajattoman luovaan, supramodaaliseen kognitiiviseen käyttäytymisprofiiliin. --- The distinguishing factor The language used by humans is markedly different from the communication systems seen in the animal world. The human brain contains a ‘distinguishing factor’, which makes it possible for human children to learn natural languages spontaneously, whereas such a feat is not possible for other animals. This article presents an assessment of what such a distinguishing factor may be, how it is actualised in the human brain and how it is born out of biological evolution. Sources consulted for this article include neuroscientific research, evolutionary theory, genetics, comparative zoology and linguistics. By way of a conclusion, the article posits that a series of mutations has occurred in recent human evolution which has changed the organisation of the brain (notably in and around the Broca’s area, a change which enables the capacity within our linguistic abilities for the recursive processing of formal symbols in the early stages of development and which, at a later developmental stage, results in the boundlessly creative, supramodal, cognitive behavioural profile common to modern humans.

It is well documented that in some languages, such as in Finnish, it is possible to stack derivational morphemes iteratively to word stems. However, such complex words are seldom used in real communication, and it is unclear whether they are interpreted compositionally in tandem with their morphological structure. Here I studied the matter by eliciting semantic interpretations from ten native speakers of Finnish for words whose complexity and morphemic content were systematically varied. The results show that although the frequency of semantic interpretation decreases linearly as a function of the number of morphemes in a word (contrary to the case of ungrammatical words where the semantic interpretation is lacking), when the participants provided semantic analyses of complex words, these analyses were compositional or nearly compositional. Even three iteratively stacked causative morphemes were analyzed as a true triple causative, i.e., 'when some person makes another person to get a third person to eliminate that person'. I conclude that while speakers possess accurate linguistic knowledge of the semantic properties of iteratively formed words, some linguistic or extra-linguistic factors make the extraction of such meanings difficult. Some possible reasons for the existence of such limitations are discussed. Furthermore, I discuss the relevance of these findings to the theory of word formation and suggest that in addition to strict rules, word formation is subject to graded, soft constraints. peerReviewed

On the origins of inexpressible content (englanti) 3/2005 (109) On the origins of inexpressible content Words in a language appear to embrace certain semantic information that cannot be described sufficiently in words. For example, the phrase to cover with paint is not sufficient to describe the meaning of the verb to paint, because the brush itself is not considered to be painted when dipped in the paint pot, even though it is then covered with paint. The writer asserts that this phenomenon applies to virtually every word in a language. Searching from linguistics and psychology sources, he finds a number of recent theories on cognition, concepts and meanings. These theories are critically reviewed, and it is argued that none of them provides a satisfactory explanation for the phenomenon of inexpressible content. Causatives are used as linguistic examples in the study. The writer proposes that the inexpressible content of causatives is derived from their logical syntax rather than their lexical semantics.
