Pantropical spotted dolphins, Stenella attenuata, are found across all tropical and subtropical oceans around the world, but their distribution is poorly known in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (SWA). A group of approximately 10 S. attenuata individuals was sighted in deep (~3,000 m), warm (~27.5 °C) and oligotrophic waters, near oceanic banks off northeastern Brazil (02°04’16.68” S and 038°08’28.26” W). This sighting constitute a new record of the northern distribution of S. attenuata in SWA. More survey efforts must be carried out to investigate cetaceans distribution along the Brazilian coast, especially in offshore waters. Golfinhos-pintados-pantropicais, Stenella attenuata, são encontrados em todos os oceanos tropicais e subtropicais do mundo, mas sua distribuição no Atlântico Sul Ocidental (ASO) é pouco conhecida. Um grupo de aproximadamente 10 indivíduos de S. attenuata foi avistado em águas profundas (c. 3.000 m), quentes (c. 27,5 °C) e oligotróficas, próximas a bancos oceânicos do Nordeste do Brasil (02°04’16.68” S e 038°08’28.26” W). Esse avistamento representa um novo registro para a distribuição mais setentrional de S. attenuata no ASO. Maiores esforços para investigar a distribuição de cetáceos ao longo da costa brasileira precisam ser realizados, especialmente em águas oceânicas.

The semiarid northeast of Brazil is one of the most densely populated dryland regions in the world and recurrently affected by severe droughts. Thus, reliable seasonal forecasts of streamflow and reservoir storage are of high value for water managers. Such forecasts can be generated by applying either hydrological models representing underlying processes or statistical relationships exploiting correlations among meteorological and hydrological variables. This work evaluates and compares the performances of seasonal reservoir storage forecasts derived by a process-based hydrological model and a statistical approach. Driven by observations, both models achieve similar simulation accuracies. In a hindcast experiment, however, the accuracy of estimating regional reservoir storages was considerably lower using the process-based hydrological model, whereas the resolution and reliability of drought event predictions were similar by both approaches. Further investigations regarding the deficiencies of the process-based model revealed a significant influence of antecedent wetness conditions and a higher sensitivity of model prediction performance to rainfall forecast quality. Within the scope of this study, the statistical model proved to be the more straightforward approach for predictions of reservoir level and drought events at regionally and monthly aggregated scales. However, for forecasts at finer scales of space and time or for the investigation of underlying processes, the costly initialisation and application of a process-based model can be worthwhile. In this contribution the author provides personal information on historical events about the performance by the rearadmiral Augusto Roque Dias Fernandes in defence of Brazil’s national concerns, as related to the tuna resources exploitation by Japanese fleets and the “lobster war” carried out against vessels of the French navy, in Northeast Brazil. Nesta contribuição o autor fornece informações pessoais sobre eventos históricos pertinentes à atuação do vice-almirante Augusto Roque Dias Fernandes na defesa dos interesses nacionais, relativos à exploração dos atuns por frotas japonesas, e à “guerra da lagosta”, em confronto com barcos da marinha francesa, no Nordeste do Brasil.

International audience; A relationship between oceanic conditions in the northwestern equatorial Atlantic (NWEA) and the seasonal rainfall over the northern part of Brazilian Northeast (NNEB) allows large climate events to be forecasted with a delay of a few months. Observed sea surface variables (sea surface temperature, wind stress and latent heat flux) and reanalyzed temperature and salinity profiles at depths of 0 - 150 m are used during 1974-2008. Perturbations in the Wind-Evaporation-SST mechanism over the NWEA during the last months of the year and the first months of the following year are of primary importance in evaluating the risk that strong climate events will affect the subsequent seasonal rainfall (in March-April) over the NNEB. Especially interesting are the Barrier Layer Thickness (BLT) and Ocean Heat Content (OHC) in the NWEA region from August-September through the subsequent months, during which a slow and steady evolution is apparent, with the highest signal occurring in October-November. Through their relationship with the local surface dynamic conditions, such BLT and OHC perturbations during the last months of the year can be used as a valuable indicator for forecasting wet or dry events over the NNEB during the subsequent rainfall season. A proposal is discussed to deploy additional temperature/conducti- vity sensors down to a depth of 140 m at three PIRATA moorings located in the NWEA region. That will be necessary if the BLT and other parameters of energy exchange between the ocean and atmosphere are to be estimated in real time and with a sufficiently high vertical resolution.

In the northeastern coast of Brazil, between the states of Maranhão and Rio Grande do Norte, the semiarid climate extends to the littoral. This sector of the Brazilian coast, known as the “dune coast”, also harbours mangroves located along estuaries and coastal lagoons. At the extreme west of this sector, the semiarid conditions transits into humid equatorial climate, typical of the Amazon region. In this transition, there is located the enormous Parnaíba Delta, the largest open sea delta in the Americas, covering about 270,000 ha. The Delta is encircled by an Environmental Protection Area (EPA), a 313,809-ha federal conservation unit established in 1996 and located at 02°37’– 03°05’ S and 42°29’– 41°09’ W (Figure 1). Within the Delta, the “Reserva Extrativista (RESEX) Delta do Parnaíba” was created by the Federal Government in 2000. This 27,021-ha extractive reserve was constituted by 3,600 families of local fishermen which depend mostly on mangrove products. Uca-crab, Ucides cordatus, is the most explored resource and the RESEX has the largest concentration of crab catchers in Brazil. The EPA, apart from preserving over 100,000 ha of mangroves and associated ecosystems, protects the IUCN Red List, Red-handed Howler Monkey Alouatta belzebul; a relatively large cetacean diversity and a highly diversified avifauna, including colonies of the iconic scarlet ibis Eudocimus ruber

Semiarid region following decreasing reservoir volume due to rainfall shortage during four consecutive years. The monitoring pe-riod, between November 2011 and May 2014, assessed approximately 50% water volume reduction and 10 meters’ decrease ofreservoir water level that degraded water quality. Decrease in reservoir volume, strong evaporation and the permanent influenceof anthropogenic activities, favored the concentration of salts and accumulation of nutrients and of increasing pH. Thermal strat-ification of the water column occurred when volume was maximum and lead to a significant reduction in dissolved oxygen in thehypolimnion (0.07 to 2.62 mg L–1). Diminishing volume resulted in mixing of the hypolimnion nutrient-rich and oxygen-poor watersin the entre water column and changed the initial oligotrophic condition to eutrophic. However, the temporal scale of the responseof the reservoir’s trophic state differs in the different areas of the reservoir. Whereas deeper areas accumulating nutrients fromaquaculture and agriculture progressively became mesotrophic and eventually eutrophic; shallower regions far from direct an-thropogenic influences, changed their trophic sate much later, but rapidly turned into super-eutrophic conditions, probably due tomore intense sediment resuspension and water mixing. Trophic State Index followed nutrient increase during most of the period.However, it also responded to an increase in chlorophyll a concentrations when the reservoir achieved its minimum volume, inparticular in the shallower areas. The results suggest that this type of reservoir systems are vulnerable to eutrophication duringextended drought periods and that a better assessment of the maximum support capacity for reservoir activities, particularly aqua-culture, must be re-assessed taking into consideration worst case scenarios forecasted by global climate change.Key words

Este artigo analisa a evolução no número de beneficiários e no valor do repasse do Programa Bolsa Família (PBF). Para tanto, são feitas considerações sobre o conceito de pobreza e as principais alterações na concepção do PBF. O estudo tem como recorte temporal os anos de 2004 a 2009, e recorte espacial o Nordeste brasileiro, região com os piores indicadores sociais e demográficos do país. A fonte de dados foi a Matriz de Informação Social do MDS (Ministério do Desenvolvimento Social), que aponta para a diminuição no número de beneficiários e no valor repassado aos Programas Remanescentes (Auxílio Gás, Cartão Alimentação, Bolsa Alimentação, Bolsa Escola) vis-à-vis a expansão no número de famílias pobres assistidas pelo PBF. Apesar das críticas de alguns setores aos programas de proteção social, em 2008 foram gastos R$ 10,6 bilhões com PBF, o equivalente a 0,38% do PIB desse ano. A expansão desses programas tem possibilitado a melhora nos indicadores sociais do Nordeste, que aos poucos vem diminuindo o “gap” com o restante do país.

The present contribution reports for the first time the sessile barnacle Xenobalanus globicipitis as an epizoic of the striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba in the oligotrophic waters of north-eastern Brazil. One barnacle specimen was found on a dead cetacean in Ceara´ State, north-eastern Brazil. Diagnosis and figures of the barnacle are provided and the relationship between the epizoic and the host discussed.

Between January 1998 and March 2000 were sampled 2,998 landings from 975 craft, totaling 207.7 tons of bony and cartilaginous fish from the artisanal fleet of motorized and sailing craft. The fishing gears included deep-water and surface hand lines, gill net, net for flying fish, surrounding net and fish traps in the states of Alagoas, Pernambuco, Ceará, Piauí and northern Bahia. The data collected resulted from type and category of landings and fishing gear utilized; areas and depths of actions; catch composition; and the lengths and weights of the samples caught. The states of Bahia (33%) and Ceará (31.5%) had the largest productions, followed by Alagoas and Pernambuco (22.3%), and Rio Grande do Norte (13.3%). Motorized craft represented 37.6% and sailboats represented 62.4% of the fleet. The motorized craft accounted for 53.4% of landings and 60.5% of production. Sailboats represented 46.6% and 39.5% of the landings and production. The most commonly used fishing gear was hand line, which was present in 66.2% of the craft, 74.6% of landings and 85.6% of production. A total of 170 species, 104 genera and 52 families were identified among the 121,475 individuals sampled Entre janeiro de 1998 e março de 2000 foram amostrados 2.998 desembarques de 975 embarcações que totalizaram 207,7 t de peixes ósseos e cartilaginosos, da frota artesanal do Nordeste. As artes de pesca utilizadas foram a linha de mão de fundo e superfície, as redes de emalhar e cerco e a armadilha para peixe, no norte da Bahia, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará e Piauí. Foram registrados o tipo e categoria da embarcação, pesos desembarcados, artes de pesca utilizadas, áreas e profundidades de atuação e a composição das capturas, assim como os tamanhos de captura dos exemplares. Os Estados da Bahia (33%) e Ceará (31,5%) foram responsáveis pelos maiores desembarques, seguidos por Alagoas e Pernambuco (22,3%) e Rio Grande do Norte (13,3%). Embarcações motorizadas representaram 37,6% e barcos a vela 62,4%. A categoria motorizada totalizou 53,4% dos desembarques e 60,5% da produção e barcos a vela representaram 46,6% e 39,5%, respectivamente. A arte de pesca mais utilizada foi a linha de mão, totalizando 74,6% dos desembarques, 66,2% das embarcações e 85,6% do peso desembarcado. Foram identificadas 324 áreas de pesca (pesqueiros), em profundidades de 7,5 a 1.000 metros, distantes 1 a 35 milhas da costa. Foram registradas 170 espécies, 104 gêneros e 52 famílias, para os 121.475 exemplares amostrados.

The gray dolphin, Sotalia guianensis, is largely distributed throughout the Atlantic tropical and subtropical coast of South and Central Americas. Stranding records are common along the Brazilian coast. Behavioral studies have been performed in restricted areas of the species distribution with few solitaries’ specimen records. From September 4th to 26th, 1998, a gray dolphin spent time in a natural pool on Maracaípe, Pernambuco, Brazil. The dolphin was monitored with the purpose of understanding the reasons why it stayed there even when the environmental conditions allowed it to leave. A total of 31.17 hours of observation time was performed. The specimen left the pool on September, 26th and a dead dolphin was found three days later with similar characteristics. Even though it was not possible to define why the dolphin stayed there, it is possible to classify it as a stranding case due to the absence of human interaction. Considering the nonexistence of rehabilitation centers to small cetaceans in Brazil, on similar cases it is recommended to get biological tissue, mark and release the dolphin into an appropriated area immediately O boto-cinza, Sotalia guianensis, possui ampla distribuição, ocorrendo ao longo da costa atlântica tropical e subtropical das Américas do Sul e Central. São comuns os registros de encalhes na costa brasileira. Estudos comportamentais são realizados em áreas restritas da distribuição da espécie, tendo registros de casos de espécimes solitários. Durante o período de 4 a 26 de setembro de 1998, um boto-cinza permaneceu em uma piscina natural na extremidade sul da praia de Maracaípe, Pernambuco, Brasil. O espécime foi monitorado com o objetivo de entender os motivos da sua permanência no local embora as condições ambientais permitissem sua saída. Foi realizado um total de 31,17 h de observações. O botocinza deixou a piscina no dia 26 de setembro. Após três dias foi encontrado um espécime morto com características bastante semelhantes. Apesar de não ter sido esclarecida a causa da permanência do animal, pode-se afirmar tratar-se de um caso de encalhe, pois o espécime evitou interação com humanos. Considerando a inexistência de estruturas adequadas para a reabilitação de pequenos cetáceos em cativeiro no Brasil, recomenda-se que em casos semelhantes o animal seja capturado para coleta de material biológico, marcado e imediatamente devolvido à natureza em local apropriado

Intensive shrimp aquaculture has increased by about 20% per year during the last decade along the semi-arid NE coast of Brazil due to the optimal climate and environmental setting. Emissions of N and P from this activity to 16 estuaries along the coast of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte states, NE Brazil, where about 80% of the shrimp farming area of the country is located, showed that intensive shrimp farming presents average emission factors for N and P ranging from 6 to 664 kg.km-2.yr-1 and from 0.4 to 77 kg.km2 .yr-1, respectively. These emission factors resulted in total annual emissions of 9 to 485 t.yr-1 and 0.7 to 35 t.yr-1, for N and P respectively. Larger loads occurred at the Jaguaribe River (Ceará State) and the Açu River (Rio Grande do Norte State). Intensive shrimp farming is the major relative contributor of N to the Jaguaribe (CE) (41%) and Açu (RN) (63%) basins. Also at the Guamaré basin (RN) it contributes with 26% of the total N load. No presente trabalho foram estudadas espécies de Tintinnina encontradas em amostras de plâncton coletadas em águas costeira do Nordeste do Brasil entre as cidades de Cabedelo (PB) e Natal (RN). Um total de 15 espécies, distribuídas em 6 famílias e 10 gêneros foram encontradas na região. As espécies foram descritas e desenhadas com câmara clara e medidas usando ocular micrométrica. Duas espécies (Craterella aperta e Tintinnopsis prowazeki) representaram o primeiro registro para o Nordeste brasileiro. Muitas das espécies foram raras e ocorreram esporadicamente no material estudado. As espécies mais abundantes e frequentes foram Leprotintinnus nordqvisti e Tintinnopsis brasiliensis; a primeira predominou quantitativamente, apresentando proliferação intensa em algumas estações. Espécies com lóricas do tipo aglutinante foram as mais frequentes nas regiões.

O presente trabalho descreve aspectos biológico-pesqueiros da serra, Scomberomus brasiliensis, importante recurso artesanal do Nordeste do Brasil, relativos à tecnologia de pesca com rede-de-espera, fauna acompanhante e razões biométricas que afetam o processo de emalhamento. O material de estudo foi obtido por amostragem de 482 desembarques realizados ao longo da costa nordestina nos anos 1998 a 2001, e em 19 viagens de pesca experimental utilizando-se uma bateria de panos de rede com malhas de 70, 80, 90 e 100 mm. A composição específica das pescarias com rede-de-espera apresenta variações espaço-temporais na região Nordeste, mas a serra é a espécie-alvo por ser a mais importante em volume de produção na maioria dos estados e na maior parte do ano. As espécies mais comumente capturadas como fauna acompanhante possuem a forma do corpo semelhante à da serra, principalmente a cavala, Scomberomorus cavala, enquanto o xerelete, Caranx crysos e a sardinha-bandeira, Opisthonema oglinum, estes são relativamente mais altos. A captura, por emalhamento, das três principais espécies ocorre, sobretudo, na região entre a primeira nadadeira dorsal e a nadadeira anal, que corresponde ao perímetro máximo do peixe.

This paper deals with the modernization of agriculture, classification of counties and the level of land concentration in the state of Maranhão. The data used in this study, was obtained from publications of Brazilian Geographic and Statistical Institute – IBGE. To verify technological level and for the classification of counties, factor analysis technique was used. To evaluate land concentration in the State, Gini index was calculated. The results showed constrast in the level of technology used in different counties. It was noted that a small group of farmers is using capital intensive technologies and a large number of farmers are applying traditional rudimentry technology. In relation to land concentration, it was observed that 1% of large farms accounts for 43% of the total farm area. It may he concluded the state of Maranhão represents a great disparity in relation to agricultural technology use in the counties. Analisa o nível de modernização da agricultura no Estado do Maranhão, fazendo a classificação relativa entre os 136 municípios do Estado. Identifica a tendência da área colhida e produção das culturas de arroz, milho, feijão, mandioca, soja, cana-de-açúcar e banana, que são as principais culturas agrícolas do Maranhão e, por último, avalia o nível de concentração fundiária do Estado. Os dados utilizados foram obtidos junto ao Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. Para descrever o padrão tecnológico e a classificação relativa dos municípios maranhenses, utiliza a técnica da análise fatorial; para identificar a evolução da área colhida e produção das principais culturas agrícolas do Estado, calcularam-se as taxas de crescimento dessas variáveis entre 1973 e 1995; e, para avaliar a concentração fundiária do Maranhão, calculou-se o Índice de Gini. Os resultados mostram um grande contraste do nível tecnológico empregado na agricultura dos diferentes municípios maranhenses. Quanto à análise da concentração fundiária do Estado, verificou-se elevada concentração de terras, sendo que 1% dos maiores estabelecimentos detém 43% da área das terras rurais. Conclui que o Estado do Maranhão apresenta grandes disparidades tecnológicas na agricultura pratic ada nos seus municípios e alto grau de concentração de terras, necessitando de medidas urgentes que venham reduzir as desigualdades tecnológicas empregadas na agricultura e promover o desenvolvimento rural do Estado, como um todo.

A análise quantitativa de populações biológicas tem como principal objetivo a determinação e a comparação de relações entre variáveis biométricas. As relações biométricas das lagostas são uma importante ferramenta utilizada pela biologia pesqueira para o estudo da dinâmica populacional destes crustáceos. É sabido que durante as atividades de coleta de dados biológicos “no campo”, vários são os problemas encontrados pelos amostradores, tais como: a) sistemática da pescaria impossibilitando a obtenção de informações biométricas, por exemplo, “descabeçamento” a bordo das embarcações, impede a coleta de informações sobre os comprimentos total e do cefalotórax e seus respectivos pesos; e b) rápido processo de beneficiamento das caudas nas indústrias de pesca. Assim, torna-se necessário o conhecimento de relações funcionais entre duas variáveis que permitam, com base no conhecimento de uma variável, considerada independente, estimar-se uma outra, considerada dependente. Por convenção, a variável independente, representada normalmente por “x” e no eixo das abscissas, deverá ser aquela de mais fácil medição. Por exemplo, ao se relacionar as variáveis peso e comprimento de um indivíduo, a segunda será a variável independente, pois é mais fácil medir seu comprimento do que pesá-lo. Nos casos de não haver dependência entre as variáveis, lançamos na abscissa a variável que apresentar maior campo de variação. A variável dependente, representada por “y” e no eixo das ordenadas é aquela mais difícil de se obter em campo ou como o próprio nome sugere, aquela que depende da outra variável relacionada.Na presente Nota Científica apresentamos algumas relações de comprimento e peso das lagostas P. argus e P. laevicauda, visando à caracterização biométrica da população que se acha submetida a pesca no Nordeste do Brasil.

This study represents an attempt to evaluate the current criteria for the distribution and setting of the price of irrigation water. The study focuses the determination of the efficient price for water. Curently, the government allocates water based on average consumption per hectare, and the water price is set with the objective of recovering the costs of supplying it. There is no exclusive use ofwater. Crop income and the willingness of the producer to pay for water are not considered in the current allocation system. The model proposed in this study is based on short-term water demand curves derived from crop production functions for the 1995/96 crop year. The results demonstrate that 36,6 % of the irrigation water was not allocated to high value crops. If each cropped received the optimum quantity of water, the gross value of production would increase significantly. The revenue generated from paying for the water would more than cover the operation and maintenance costs of the water supply system. Avalia o critério atual de distribuição e fixação da tarifa d’água destinada à irrigação, a partir de modelo fundamentado no preço eficiente da água a ser estimado. O modelo proposto fundamenta-se nas curvas de demanda por água no curto prazo, obtidas a partir das funções de produção das culturas selecionadas para o estudo, no ano agrícola de 1995/96. Os resultados demonstram que 36,6 % da água não foram alocados nas culturas de maior valor. Se o acesso à água fosse limitado apenas àqueles que estivessem dispostos a pagar o preço de equilíbrio, o primeiro impacto no projeto seria a seleção dos irrigantes mais eficientes, aumentaria substancialmente o Valor Bruto da Produção, cresceriam as receitas do governo (com eliminação de subsídios) e cobririam com folga os custos de operação e manutenção do sistema de suprimento. O estudo não propõe ampliar o volume de recursos disponíveis aos irrigantes. Apenas sugere redistribuir a água entre eles, com base no preço estimado.

In this paper we tried to estimate the levels of life quality in the 1,509 counties of Brazilian Northeastern Region when compared to all 4,502 Brazilian counties in accordance with the last Demographic Census of IBGE. In order to achieve that objective, we designed the Index of Relative Development (IRD) which is based on six variables: percentage of the household of the county acessing to safe water; percentage of the household of the county acessing to sanitary services; percentage of literate people over 5 years old; percentage of household acessing to garbage collecting service; average of personal income in the county; Gini index of income distribution in the county. In order to build up the IRD , the multivariate analysis technique was used, through which we have estimated two orthogonal score factors. The result showed that from the 100 counties ranked in the bottom position in terms of life quality, 98 were located in Northeast of Brazil. The research also showed that among the 100 counties ranked in the bottom position in terms of personal income, almost all of them are located in the Northeastern region. This result elucidates how difficult the social and economical status in this region are, and how restric the capacity of this region in creating employments and increase the internal income in the majority of the counties of Northeast. Traz síntese de pesquisa que buscou estimar os níveis de qualidade de vida dos 1.509 municípios da região Nordeste relativamente aos 4.502 municípios brasileiros contabilizados pelo último Censo Demográfico do Brasil produzido pelo IBGE em 1991. Construiu-se o Índice de Desenvolvimento Relativo (IDR) baseado em seis indicadores a saber: percentagem dos domicílios do município com acesso ao serviço de água encanada; percentagem dos domicílios do município com acesso a serviço de saneamento básico; percentagem de pessoas maiores de cinco anos de idade alfabetizadas; percentagem dos domicílios do município com acesso a serviço de coleta sistemática de lixo; renda média pessoal do município; índice de Gini de concentração da renda do município. Para a construção do IDR aplica-se a técnica de análise multivariada, onde estimam-se dois fatores ortogonais. Os resultados mostram que dos 100 municípios brasileiros com piores níveis de qualidade de vida, 92 estão no Nordeste. Dos municípios com piores performances em termos de renda pessoal disponível, a maioria estava no Nordeste. Também mostra como são difíceis os indicadores sociais de praticamente todos os municípios nordestinos, e a reduzida capacidade de geração de emprego e renda que prevalece na sua grande maioria.

This paper estimated mutton and goat meat potential supply and demand, in Northeast Brazil and Brazil, in order to measure production as a function of the existing market for these products. To predict supply, the study used a parametric method by adjusting a polinomial equation. To predict demand, the study used a method which aggregates per capita growth rates of income and population, and income elasticity of demand to the classical consumption function. The results showed the existence of huge current and potential deficits of mutton and goat meat in Northeast Brazil and inBrazil. Estima a oferta e demanda potenciais de car- nes ovina e caprina, no Nordeste e Brasil, objetivando dimensionar a produção em função do mercado existente para estes produtos. Para projetar a oferta usa o método paramétrico, ou seja, ajusta uma equação polinomial. Na projeção da demanda, emprega o método que agrega à função consumo clássica, as taxas de crescimento da renda per capita e da população e a elasticidade-renda da demanda. Conclui que existe um enorme déficit tanto atual quanto potencial de carnes ovina e caprina em nível de Nordeste e de Brasil. O mercado externo também mostra-se bastante promissor.

The paper deals with economics of scale of different size of cashewnut processing units. It was tried to identify economic return and unused capacity of each unit. Cost theory and some indicators of investment analysis were used. The results showed the presence of economies of scale. The unit with the processing capacity of 1100kg/day is the most efficient due to low everage cost and low unused capacity. It was also observed that procesisng units bring social benefits in the form of creating job opportunities and income for the population. Procura também identificar o retorno econômico de cada unidade e o volume de ociosidade dos equipamentos que compõem referidas minifábricas. Utiliza como base da análise a teoria dos custos e alguns indicadores de rentabilidade da análise de investimento. Os resultados indicam a ocorrência das economias mencionadas e que o tamanho mais eficiente e o que opera com menor ociosidade é o que processa 1.100kg de castanha por dia. Constatou-se que as minifábricas proporcionam benefícios sociais através da geração de emprego e renda.

Common property and free access to fish stock have represented main implications to the form in which fishery has been developed. Due to the great competition among fishing vessels (boats) and non-existence of incentives to maintain the fishing effort close to maximum sustainable yield level, predatory effects of fishing are observed. This study analysis the trend of fish production in the northeast region and its relation to export and national consumption. Table analysis and regression technique were applied. Main results are: given a great potential of water accumulation in the region, it is possible to increase fish production to meet regional demand and generate income for fish producers. This production system (fish production in sweet water) is of fundamental importance to reduce the pressure on sea fish stock and consequently make it possible to preserve it for future consumption. It was also observed that fish production in the northeast region has positive significant influence on national fish consumption and export. Trata da análise do comportamento da produção de pescado no Nordeste, associando referida produção às exportações e ao consumo nacional. Foram utilizadas as técnicas de análise tabular e regressão simples. Dentre os resultados obtidos observou-se que nos últimos anos a produção de pescado do mar apresentou-se decrescente, podendo ser conseqüência da intensificação dos esforços de pesca sobre esses estoques em períodos anteriores. Dado o grande potencial de acúmulo de água doce na Região, há possibilidade de se aumentar a produção de pescado em águas interiores para abastecer o mercado e gerar renda para os produtores, sendo essa alternativa de produção fundamental para reduzir as pressões sobre os estoques pesqueiros marítimos e, conseqüentemente, possibilitar sua preservação para épocas posteriores. Verifica também que a produção de pescado nordestino tem significante influência positiva sobre as exportações e consumo nacional.
