7. Gender, religion, and ethnicity : A sociocultural perspective on child nutritional status in Indonesia

Abstract

Malnutrition is a decisive factor that could detain individual and societal advancements. It may not only reduce individual well-being, but at macro level, could also be a burden for the national health expenditure and the labour productivity. Aside from the economic context, the sociocultural settings a person lives in may influence his/her nutritional status and their significant others. In this case, sociocultural factors operate “invisibly” by influencing people’s beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour toward food and other health inputs. Unlike the extensive efforts that many have put to understand the linkage between economic factors and nutrition, fewer works have been done to reveal the role and mechanisms by which sociocultural factors may affect child nutritional status.Chapter 1 described the main research objective of this thesis, that is “to examine how sociocultural factors (e.g., gender, religion, and ethnicity) may influence nutritional status in childhood and adolescence (0–19 years of age)”. Indonesia, the world’s fourth largest country in terms of population, is strategically selected for the study site. In response to the main research objective, empirical Chapters 2–5 were then produced. Each chapter studied a specific theme, covering the influence of women’s empowerment (e.g., mother’s education, mother’s bargaining power, and mother’s working status) on adolescent nutritional status (10–19 years of age) in Chapter 2, the role of mother’s education in sibling inequalities (e.g., by gender, birth order, and the number of siblings) in child overweight (0–19 years of age) in Chapter 3, and the effects of maternal Ramadan fasting on the nutritional status of Muslims during childhood and adolescence (0–19 years of age) in Chapter 4, and finally, the influence of ethnicity on dietary diversity—one measure of dietary intake—of school-aged children (7–12 years of age) by gender and household socioeconomic status (SES) in Chapter 5.Chapter 2 found a positive

Abstract

Motor control and body representation in the central nervous system (CNS) as well as musculoskeletal architecture and physiology are shaped during development by sensorimotor experience and feedback, but the emergence of locomotor disorders during maturation and their persistence over time remain a matter of debate in the absence of brain damage. By using transient immobilization of the hind limbs, we investigated the enduring impact of postnatal sensorimotor restriction (SMR) on gait and posture on treadmill, age-related changes in locomotion, musculoskeletal histopathology and Hoffmann reflex in adult rats without brain damage. SMR degrades most gait parameters and induces overextended knees and ankles, leading to digitigrade locomotion that resembles equinus. Based on variations in gait parameters, SMR appears to alter age-dependent plasticity of treadmill locomotion. SMR also leads to small but significantly decreased tibial bone length, chondromalacia, degenerative changes in the knee joint, gastrocnemius myofiber atrophy and muscle hyperreflexia, suggestive of spasticity. We showed that reduced and atypical patterns of motor outputs, and somatosensory inputs and feedback to the immature CNS, even in the absence of perinatal brain damage, play a pivotal role in the emergence of movement disorders and musculoskeletal pathologies, and in their persistence over time. Understanding how atypical sensorimotor development likely contributes to these degradations may guide effective rehabilitation treatments in children with either acquired (ie, with brain damage) or developmental (ie, without brain injury) motor disabilities. 28;6

Contains fulltext : 172250.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), BACKGROUND: Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone-producing primary liver tumors are rare, especially in children. We report the case of an adolescent boy of mixed Dutch and Moroccan descent with an adrenocorticotropic hormone-producing calcifying nested stromal-epithelial tumor with long-term follow-up. Thus far, only two such cases have been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old boy of mixed Dutch and Moroccan descent presented with Cushing syndrome and a palpable abdominal mass. A calcifying nested stromal-epithelial tumor was diagnosed. Postoperatively, his plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone concentration normalized. He remains in complete remission 13 years after tumor resection. CONCLUSIONS: Calcifying nested stromal-epithelial tumor should be in the differential diagnosis of liver tumors, especially if associated with Cushing syndrome as significant morbidity and mortality may be associated. Literature on the topics involved is comprehensively reviewed.

Abstract

In the intergenerational transmission of fertility behavior both genetic and social mechanisms play a role. Genetic inheritance may work through the ability to have children, i.e. the fecundity and fecundability of women (Pearson et al. 1899), and/or through the desire for children or childbearing motivations (Kohler et al. 1999; Miller 1986). Fertility behavior might also be transmitted through socialization, meaning that preferences and attitudes towards family formation are instilled in the younger generation when growing up in the parental home (Duncan et al. 1965). So far however, few studies have addressed social and genetic factors, and their interactions. Moreover, little is known about the interplay of genetic and environment effects with other covariates that are known to influence fertility transmission, such as gender, birth order, social class, religion, regional family systems, and time. In this paper, we address these questions for a historical population. We use a twin and sibling design examining the outcomes for sibs brought up in different socialization contexts and of different degrees of genetic relatedness in order to unravel social and genetic influences and their interplay with e.g. social class, and family system. More concretely, we will compare the reproductive behavior (age at first birth and completed fertility ) of twins to non-twin siblings, and of full siblings to half-siblings. We base our analyses on a large database, named LINKS, which currently contains birth, marriage and death certificates for four different provinces of the Netherlands in the period 1812-1902. By linking the birth certificates of mothers and daughters, and selecting all twin (N=15.000) and appropriate sibling-half-sibling pairs (N=200.000), we constructed an analytical sample fit for analyzing the inheritance of fertility behavior.

Abstract

Relatives play an important role in human reproduction according to evolutionary theories of reproductive behavior, but previous empirical studies show large differences in the effects of kin on fertility outcomes. In our paper we examine the effect of co-resident kin and non-kin on the length of birth intervals over the reproductive life course of Dutch women born between 1842 and 1920. We estimate Cox proportional hazard models for parity progression based on the presence of kin and non-kin in the household while controlling for a large number of individual and community-level characteristics. We find that couples living with their brothers experienced shorter birth intervals whereas couples residing with a widowed father had relatively longer birth intervals. The effects of these types of kin on reproduction were most pronounced up to the birth of the fifth child, but not thereafter. We found no effect for mothers or other types of kin.

The biotransformation of isostevic acid ( ent -beyeran-19-oic acid), ent -16β-hydroxybeyeran-19-oic acid, and ent -16β-hydroxy-16α-methylbeyeran-19-oic acid by Gibberella fujikuroi has been shown to give ring A desoxybeyergibberellin analogues of GA 9 , GA 12 and GA 25 . The ent -16β-hydroxybeyeran-19-oic acid also gave some hydroxylated beyeranes and the 7β-hydroxybeyeranolide.
