Abstract This study presents a comprehensive multimodal analytical study of an Egyptian ritual Bes-vase, of the 2nd century BCE employing cutting-edge proteomics, metabolomics, genetics techniques, and synchrotron radiation-based Fourier Transformed Infrared microSpectroscopy (SR µ-FTIR) to characterize organic residues of its content. We successfully identified the presence of various functional, bioactive, psychotropic, and medicinal substances, shedding light on the diverse components of a liquid concoction used for ritual practices in Ptolemaic Egypt. Using LC-MS/MS with a new methodological approach, we identified key proteins and metabolites, enabling the identification of botanical sources, confirmed by genetic sequences. Our analyses revealed traces of Peganum harmala, Nimphaea nouchali var. caerulea, and a plant of the Cleome genus, all of which are traditionally proven to have psychotropic and medicinal properties. Additionally, the identification of human fluids suggests their direct involvement in these rituals. Furthermore, metabolomics and SR µ-FTIR analyses also revealed the presence of fermented fruit-based liquid and other ingredients such as honey or royal jelly. The identification of specific chemical compounds, such as alkaloids and flavonoids, provides insight into the psychoactive and therapeutic uses of these in ancient ritual practices. This multidisciplinary study highlights the complexity of ancient cultures and their interactions with psychoactive, medicinal, and bioactive substances. These findings contribute to our understanding of ancient belief systems, cultural practices, and the utilization of natural resources, ultimately enhancing our knowledge of past societies and their connection to the natural world.

Abstract The article focuses on adapting generalized depth preference and flow velocity characteristics from Brown trout (Salmo trutta morpha fario) to the Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus). The results obtained were used to model habitat suitability with 1D and 2D models. Since 1995, research on assessing aquatic habitat quality has been ongoing on 77 mountain streams in Slovakia. This assessment employs a System of Environmental Flow Analysis (SEFA), which is based on the Instream Flow Incremental Methodology (IFIM). In most sections, Brown trout occurred in representative numbers. Brown trout habitat preferences were derived and generalized, and represented by suitability curves. Minnows were present in sufficient numbers for the derivation of suitability curves only on some streams, making direct generalization from the measured data unrepresentative. The measurement results showed that Minnow has similar depth and flow rate preferences to Brown trout. Therefore, it can be assumed that it is possible to adapt the generalised suitability curves from Brown trout to Minnow. This expansion enabled us to broaden the assessment of habitat quality using the SEFA model to mountain streams that are dominated by Minnows and where there is insufficient Brown trout presence. Verification of parameter adaptation from Brown trout to Minnow was conducted in 11 sections of mountain streams. We discuss the performance of habitat quality modeling, concerning the fundamental hydraulic characteristics of streams, using both 1D and 2D models. The results of the 2D modeling are presented for a sub-mountain stream.

Abstract The dataset presents a 43 year-long reanalysis of pollen seasons for three major allergenic genera of trees in Europe: alder (Alnus), birch (Betula), and olive (Olea). Driven by the meteorological reanalysis ERA5, the atmospheric composition model SILAM predicted the flowering period and calculated the Europe-wide dispersion pattern of pollen for the years 1980–2022. The model applied an extended 4-dimensional variational data assimilation of in-situ observations of aerobiological networks in 34 European countries to reproduce the inter-annual variability and trends of pollen production and distribution. The control variable of the assimilation procedure was the total pollen release during each flowering season, implemented as an annual correction factor to the mean pollen production. The dataset was designed as an input to studies on climate-induced and anthropogenically driven changes in the European vegetation, biodiversity monitoring, bioaerosol modelling and assessment, as well as, in combination with intra-seasonal observations, for health-related applications.

Abstract Background Antibiotic resistance is a critical global concern, posing significant challenges to human health and medical treatments. Studying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) is essential not only in clinical settings but also in diverse environmental contexts. However, ARGs in unique environments such as anchialine caves, which connect both fresh and marine water, remain largely unexplored despite their intriguing ecological characteristics. Results We present the first study that comprehensively explores the occurrence and distribution of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) within an anchialine cave. Utilizing metagenomic sequencing we uncovered a wide array of ARGs with the bacitracin resistance gene, bacA and multidrug resistance genes, being the most dominant. The cave’s microbial community and associated resistome were significantly influenced by the salinity gradient. The discovery of novel β-lactamase variants revealed the cave’s potential as a reservoir for previously undetected resistance genes. ARGs in the cave demonstrated horizontal transfer potential via plasmids, unveiling ecological implications. Conclusions These findings highlight the need for further exploration of the resistome in unique environments like anchialine caves. The interconnected dynamics of ARGs and MGEs within anchialine caves offer valuable insights into potential reservoirs and mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in natural ecosystems. This study not only advances our fundamental understanding but also highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to address antibiotic resistance in diverse ecological settings.

Abstract Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) fuels cellular ATP demands. OXPHOS defects lead to severe human disorders with unexplained tissue specific pathologies. Mitochondrial gene expression is essential for OXPHOS biogenesis since core subunits of the complexes are mitochondrial-encoded. COX14 is required for translation of COX1, the central mitochondrial-encoded subunit of complex IV. Here we describe a COX14 mutant mouse corresponding to a patient with complex IV deficiency. COX14M19I mice display broad tissue-specific pathologies. A hallmark phenotype is severe liver inflammation linked to release of mitochondrial RNA into the cytosol sensed by RIG-1 pathway. We find that mitochondrial RNA release is triggered by increased reactive oxygen species production in the deficiency of complex IV. Additionally, we describe a COA3Y72C mouse, affected in an assembly factor that cooperates with COX14 in early COX1 biogenesis, which displays a similar yet milder inflammatory phenotype. Our study provides insight into a link between defective mitochondrial gene expression and tissue-specific inflammation.

Abstract Background Suicidal ideation is a depression symptom which represents a key (cognitive) component of suicidality and plays an important role in suicide risk detection, intervention, and prevention. Despite existing research showing the importance of certain factors of depression symptoms and suicidal ideation, less is known about the interaction between the various risk and protective factors. The aim of the study was to examine whether living conditions characteristics and personal circumstances during the COVID-19 pandemic predicted the presence of depression symptoms and suicidal ideation among tertiary students and whether resilience and social support can mitigate the detrimental effects of difficult life circumstances. Method A large online cross-sectional study was conducted in March 2021 among 4,645 Slovenian tertiary students. Hierarchical multiple regression and hierarchical logistic regression methods were used to assess and compare the effect of life circumstances variables, as opposed to resilience and social support, on depression symptoms and suicidal ideation. Results Female gender, single relationship status, living alone, a higher degree of household conflict, having a history of mental illness and chronic disease diagnosis were significant predictors of depression scores. All but gender were also predictors of suicidal ideation. Household conflict and a history of mental illness were the factors showing the strongest effect in both cases. On the other hand, social support and, in particular, resilience proved to be strong protective factors against depression symptoms and suicidal ideation. After accounting for one’s resilience and social support, the explained variance in depression scores was more than doubled, while the harmful effect of household conflict and history of mental illness significantly decreased. Conclusions The findings stress the importance of one’s resilience and social support and explain why some people manage to maintain mental well-being despite finding themselves in difficult life circumstances, which was the case for many tertiary students during the COVID-19 pandemic. These insights may inform preventive efforts against developing suicidal ideation and may be used as support for the design and implementation of interventions for improving resilience and social support from childhood onward.

Two compositionally complex oxides (CCOs) of the type (Hf0.2Zr0.2Ce0.2Gd0.2 RE0.2)O2-δ, were synthesized via self-propagating room temperature synthesis where RE=Yb for one of the two, while in the other case, Yb was replaced by equal concentrations of Pr and Nd. Heat-treatment at varied temperatures between 900 °C – 1500 °C and phase evolution studies revealed the formation of a single phase with a FCC structure with the Yb containing oxide. However, the substitution of Yb with Pr and Nd resulted in an additional secondary FCC phase. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy confirmed pyrochlore-type ordering in both compounds with exemplification of superlattice planes in high-resolution transmission electron microscopic images. The presence of 3+ and 4+ cations confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, is in accordance with the results on the pyrochlore structure containing two different cationic species.

One goal of mathematics education is to adapt features of digital learning materials to students’ characteristics. This paper presents a multi-layered research approach to identify key aspects of mathematics students within the persona approach. Data for this research was collected from 5,624 mathematics students using an instrument focusing on 15 scales addressing psychological constructs. The data was analysed using factor analysis. The results of our study show that mathematical self-confidence, aspiration towards mathematics, performance orientation, intra- and interpersonal aspects of learning mathematics, and actions and reactions are the most pronounced persona dimensions of mathematics students. The dimensions of student personas identified in this research – specifically aspiration towards mathematics, and intra- and interpersonal aspects of learning mathematics – are the most critical novelty brought by this study.

IntroductionThe COVID-19 pandemic has faced students with many challenges, contributing to their mental distress. This article explores the role of demographic characteristics, psychological status, year of study, and social support during the COVID-19 pandemic in explaining Slovenian university students’ mental health problems and help-seeking behavior.MethodsIn February and March 2021, data were collected on 5,234 full-time Slovenian postsecondary students who were enrolled in public and concessionary independent higher education institutions. Participants completed a questionnaire, which included The Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), General Anxiety Disorder questionnaire (GAD-7), Oslo Social Support Scale (OSSS-3), and items measuring psychological status, help-seeking behavior and demographics. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression and hypothesis testing for differences.ResultsFactors, such as gender, age, psychological status and social support, contributed to experiencing anxiety and depression among Slovenian students during the COVID-19 pandemic, with year of study additionally contributing to experiencing depression. Similarly, gender, age, psychological status and social support contributed to help-seeking behavior. Higher levels of depression and anxiety were reported by female students, students with prior mental disorders, and students with lower social support levels. Female students and students with lower social support levels reported more frequent help-seeking behaviors.ConclusionThe results provide insight into the mental state of the Slovenian student population in the context of imposed public health measures at the end of the second COVID-19 wave in Slovenia. The findings can help identify vulnerable groups within the student population to whom we must be particularly attentive in times of crisis.

This study investigates the mechanical properties of cementitious composites with 3D-printed auxetic lattices, featuring negative Poisson’s ratios (auxetic behavior) in multiple directions. These lattices were fabricated using vat photopolymerization 3D printing, and three base materials with varying stiffness and deformation capacities were analyzed to determine their impact on the composites’ mechanical behavior. To unravel the reinforcing mechanisms of multidirectional auxetic lattices, which exhibit auxetic behavior in both planar and out-of-plane directions, X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) was utilized to analyze composite damage evolutions under different strain levels. The micro-CT characterization reveals that auxetic lattices more effectively constrain crack growth and dissipate energy by distributing stress evenly within the cement matrix. In contrast, due to lack of lateral confinement, the non-auxetic lattice reinforced composites primarily dissipate energy through extensive crack propagation and interfacial damage, leading to lower peak strength. When strain exceeding 5%, although the confinement from the auxetic behavior diminished with crack propagation, the lattice can still maintain the composite’s structural integrity, resulting in 1.7 times higher densification energy than conventional cement-based materials. These findings provide valuable insights for designing auxetic lattice-reinforced cementitious composites with enhanced load-bearing capacity and improved dissipation capabilities.

Largescale excavation at the Iron Age and Roman period Pungrt hillfort (8th century BC to 2nd century AD) has revealed a distinctly urban character of the settlement in its best-preserved Late Hallstatt phase from the 6th to 4th centuries BC. This study provides an important contribution to the understanding of the settlement’s internal organization and its socioeconomic development. By examining the previously unaddressed phenomena of settlement nucleation, population aggregation and urbanism along with the possibility of earlystate formation, the paper broadens the narrative on the fundamental social and political development in the southeastern Alpine region during the Early Iron Age and contributes to the wider field of early urbanism research.

Pollen traps, the current gold standard to determine pollen load and thereby the allergy season, are not sufficient to determine the allergenic risk. Therefore, the establishment of highly sensitive assays for allergen measurement is of highest interest. Herein, a graphene field-effect transistor (GFET) was constructed on an interdigitated electrodes chip to develop an immersible biosensor, which was used to detect the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1. Graphene was wet-transferred on interdigitated electrodes that contain a reference electrode used as a liquid gate in the GFET. Using a standard ELISA protocol, two different anti-Bet v 1 antibodies were chosen and immobilized on graphene for the specific capture of the target allergen. The sensitivity of the GFET biosensor was evaluated using a standard Ag/AgCl liquid gate electrode and a reference electrode when the chip was immersed in Bet v 1-containing solutions. The results showed a higher performance and sensitivity for Bet v 1 detection compared to a mediator release method, one of the most sensitive assays for allergen detection. Compared with conventional methods of allergen detection, these immersible biosensors significantly improved the speed and level of detection providing the foundation of a point-of-need platform for in-field application. Furthermore, the proposed technique provides both a new biosensor for allergen detection and a strategy for designing low-cost integrated biosensors.

3D printed polymeric reinforcement has been found able to improve the ductility of cementitious materials. However, due to the hydrophobic nature of commonly used 3D printing polymers, the bonding strength between the 3D printed polymers and cementitious matrix is extremely weak, which potentially hinders the mechanical performance of the reinforced composites. This work aims to improve the bonding properties by applying surface modifications on the 3D printed reinforcement, and eventually enhance the mechanical performance of the reinforced cementitious composites. Three types of surface coatings ingredients: epoxy resin (EP), sand sprinkled epoxy (SA) and short steel fibers sprinkled epoxy (SF) were used. Pull-out experiments are performed to study the bonding properties of the 3D printed reinforcement with different coatings. Then, uniaxial tensile and four-point-bending experiments are used to investigate the mechanical performance of the reinforced cementitious composites. A lattice type numerical model is applied to simulate the pull-out and tensile tests. The pull-out experiments indicate that the SA and SF reinforcement achieved approximately two times higher bonding strength than the uncoated and EP reinforcement. The tensile and flexural results suggest that the cementitious composites with SA and SF reinforcement achieved significantly better ductility (manifested by strain-hardening and deflection-hardening behavior) than the composites with uncoated and EP reinforcement. The numerical simulation results highly agree with the experimental findings, and further confirmed that the improved reinforcement-mortar bonding strength is the determinative factor that enhanced the composites mechanical performance. The findings of this work suggest that the sand and steel fiber surface coatings can effectively enhance the ductility of cementitious composites reinforced by 3D printed polymers.

Članek obravnava poselitev Prekmurja v bronasti dobi na podlagi do zdaj odkritih naselbin in grobišč ter zaobsega čas okrog 1500 let. Prehodno obdobje iz bakrene v zgodnjo bronasto dobo v Prekmurju označujejo naselbinske ostaline iz kulture Somogyvár-Vinkovci. Sledi poselitev kulture Kisapostag v zgodnji bronasti dobi, ki se je v Prekmurju zaključila s horizontom pramenaste oz. licenske keramike na prehodu v srednjo bronasto dobo. Iz zgodnjega obdobja srednje bronaste dobe so bile v Prekmurju doslej odkrite le ostaline naselja na najdišču Pod Kotom – sever. Iz obdobja pozne srednje bronaste dobe in zgodnje pozne bronaste dobe pa izstopa največje naselje Pod Grunti – Pince. V pozno bronasto dobo sodijo ostaline naselbine na Novi tabli, plani žgani grobovi v Goricah pri Turnišču, depo kovinskih predmetov na najdišču Pod Kotom – jug, pred kratkim odkrita višinska naselbina na Sotinskem bregu ter grobišči na Tišini in Gornji Bistrici.

Real-time and model-predictive control promises to make urban drainage systems (UDS) adaptive, coordinated, and dynamically optimal. Though early implementations are promising, existing control algorithms have drawbacks in computational expense, trust, system-level coordination, and labor cost. Linear feedback control has distinct advantages in computational expense, interpretation, and coordination. However, current methods for building linear feedback controllers require calibrated software models. Here we present an automated method for generating tunable linear feedback controllers that require only system response data. The controller design consists of three main steps: (1) estimating the network connectivity using tools for causal inference, (2) identifying a linear, time-invariant (LTI) dynamical system which approximates the network, and (3) designing and tuning a feedback controller based on the LTI urban drainage system approximation. The flooding safety, erosion prevention, and water treatment performance of the method are evaluated across 190 design storms on a separated sewer model. Strong results suggest that the system knowledge required for generating effective, safe, and tunable controllers for UDS is surprisingly basic. This method allows near-turnkey synthesis of controllers solely from sensor data or reduction of process-based models. HIGHLIGHTS Connectivity is automatically identified among water level sensors and valves solely using response data.; Inferred connectivity and response data are used to train linear feedback controllers.; Controllers built purely from data prevent flooding and greatly improve water treatment.;

Abstract Background Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a predominant chronic liver condition globally and is strongly associated with obesity, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia. Essential phospholipids (EPL) are recommended as supportive treatment for managing liver conditions, including MASLD or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and viral hepatitis. While efficacy of EPL as an adjunctive therapy in MASLD treatment has been established earlier, certain aspects of its usage such as the impact of standard-of-care parameters, effect of EPL on quality of life (QoL) and change in symptoms evaluation in patients with MASLD remain unexplored. The proposed trial aims to assess the efficacy and safety of EPL and the subsequent QoL of patients with MASLD associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and/or hyperlipidemia and/or obesity. Methods This is a multicenter, multinational, double-blind, randomized, two-arm, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, phase IV clinical trial. The trial is being conducted in approximately 190 patients who are randomized on a 1:1 basis either to the EPL arm (Essentiale® 1800 mg/day orally + standard of care) or placebo arm (placebo + standard of care). The primary outcome is to assess the efficacy of EPL on hepatic steatosis, as measured by transient elastography, from baseline to 6 months. The secondary outcomes include change in QoL parameters, as measured by the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire–metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease/ metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis and change in symptom evaluation (using the Global Overall Symptom scale) from baseline to 6 months for symptoms, including asthenia, feeling depressed, abdominal pain/discomfort, or fatigue. Discussion The current protocol design will allow to comprehensively explore the efficacy of EPL added to the standard of care on hepatic steatosis and QoL and its safety in patients with MASLD associated with T2DM and/or hyperlipidemia and/or obesity by assessing various outcome measures. Abstract Recent genetic studies have found common genomic risk variants among psychiatric disorders, strongly suggesting the overlaps in their molecular and cellular mechanism. Our research group identified the variant in ASTN2 as one of the candidate risk factors across these psychiatric disorders by whole-genome copy number variation analysis. However, the alterations in the human neuronal cells resulting from ASTN2 variants identified in patients remain unknown. To address this, we used patient-derived and genome-edited iPS cells with ASTN2 deletion; cells were further differentiated into neuronal cells. A comprehensive gene expression analysis using genome-edited iPS cells with variants on both alleles revealed that the expression level of ZNF558, a gene specifically expressed in human forebrain neural progenitor cells, was greatly reduced in ASTN2-deleted neuronal cells. Furthermore, the expression of the mitophagy-related gene SPATA18, which is repressed by ZNF558, and mitophagy activity were increased in ASTN2-deleted neuronal cells. These phenotypes were also detected in neuronal cells differentiated from patient-derived iPS cells with heterozygous ASTN2 deletion. Our results suggest that ASTN2 deletion is related to the common pathogenic mechanism of psychiatric disorders by regulating mitophagy via ZNF558.

This paper presents programming methods and program verification for the 3-axis reconfigurable hybrid kinematics machine MOMA V3, which represents an educational desktop milling machine with a horizontal position of the main spindle. The paper considers the different programming and program verification methods. For programming used CAD/CAM system PTC Creo, specialized CAM software CUT3D and new programming method based on STEP-NC. Program verification is based on tool path simulation, material removal simulation and virtual machine simulation. The paper presented the virtual machine in the programming system and the virtual machine integrated with the LinuxCNC control system. Final verification was achieved during the testing on machine by machining the selected workpieces which programmed with different programming methods.

In this paper we examine some inequalities of Frame's type on the interval \((0,\pi/2)\). By observing this domain we simply obtain the results using the appropriate families of stratified functions and MTP - Mixed Trigonometric Polynomials. Additionally, from those families we specify a minimax approximant as a function with some optimal properties.

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Real-time control of urban drainage systems (UDS) can reduce flood risk while enhancing water quality. However, internet-connected valves and weirs may become a liability during communications outages. Given that severe storms often cause both flooding and communications failures, it is critical that smart systems cope well with communications outages during these events. We propose a method to maintain approximately centralized predictive control of a UDS under intermittent communication by hosting approximations of the total system’s dynamics and states on each networked microcontroller. This allows individual microcontrollers to act from an imperfect understanding of the total system, even when they have not communicated with the central server for several days. We show robustness to communications outages; maintaining centralized control in this case study when reporting only once every 7 days on average. We also examine the role of relative position within the network in determining the accuracy of each microcontroller’s estimates of depths in the other storage basins. This investigation supports the idea that agents within a distributed control problem can make model-based inferences of total system conditions using their local measurements.

Problem considered: Having cardiovascular, pulmonary and metabolic illnesses increases the likelihood of developing critical COVID-19. As the global population is aging, people with chronic illnesses may have high demands for health care, including critical care, in future health crises. The purpose of this research was to examine whether presence of different pre-existing chronic illnesses were associated with the onset of respiratory failure among patients who were treated and discharged from the intensive care unit. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted at the University Hospital “Dr Dragiša Mišović-Dedinje” in Belgrade (Serbia) during the January–March 2021 epidemic wave, which had the highest mortality rate in Serbia. The study included COVID-19 patients who were treated and discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU). Data on chronic illnesses and clinical parameters regarding COVID-19 were retrieved from the electronic medical records. Results: Of 299 surviving ICU-treated patients during the study period, 47.5 % required mechanical ventilation. The adjusted logistic regression models adjusted for body mass index (BMI), platelet count, C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, lactate dehydrogenase, urea, oxygen saturation on admission and CT score showed that diabetes, neurological disorders (predominantly stroke), and recent injuries/fractures were independently associated with the onset of respiratory failure. Patients who had respiratory failure also had a higher BMI, laboratory parameters, and CT severity scores on admission. Conclusion: People with pre-existing diabetes, neurological disorders (especially stroke), and recent injuries/fractures are at higher risk of respiratory failure in COVID-19 and should strictly adhere to COVID-19 prevention measures to minimize the risk of getting infected.

More and more digital technologies are being integrated into school learning, and one strategy by policymakers to reinforce this trend is employing digital one-to-one approaches. For digital technologies to be fruitfully integrated into school-based learning scenarios, teachers and their anticipations are key. In our study, we want to explore how internal, external and technological factors affect the instructional anticipations of mathematics teachers in a digital one-to-one educational environment. Therefore, we employed a modified model of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology. Through our structural equation study, in which data from more than 900 mathematics teachers were analyzed, we identified that especially technological and external factors can predict mathematics teachers’ instructional anticipations. Findings from our study could be particularly relevant for educational policymakers, informing them about the importance of factors or interventions related to educational technology implementation.

In the old Montenegrin masculine patriarchal culture, having children was one of the primary motivations for marriage. Women in labour faced significant community pressure to give birth to a male child, as evidenced by various ethnographic records and confirmed by contemporary anthropological research. Montenegro exhibits one of the most unbalanced ratios of newborn male to female babies among countries. This necessitates an analysis that integrates legal and anthropological perspectives on son preference. The article explores the socio-historical circumstances and modern expressions of the cult of the male child, followed by an examination of the legal implications of selective abortions. The legal dimension of abortion encompasses a broad normative framework, with the fundamental question concerning the boundary of legal protection in this area, i.e., the limit of state intervention in the personal sphere of individuals and citizens. The legal analysis will also include a reflection on the impact of criminal legal protection on this debate, particularly through the lens of the criminal offense of unlawful termination of pregnancy as stipulated in Article 150 of the Criminal Code of Montenegro. Considering the scope of rights to life, family, and reproduction, and recognizing that pregnancy termination motivated by sex selection is generally prohibited, yet this practice is widespread, the assumption is that the formal legal means to address this issue are limited. As this is a societal phenomenon involving sensitive legal, personal, cultural, religious, political, social, and moral issues, the paper discusses approaches for combating this practice.

Freshwater ecosystems are at significant risk of contamination by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) due to their high inherent toxicity, their persistence in the environment and their tendency to bioaccumulate in sediments and living organisms. We investigated aquatic macrophyte communities and the concentrations of As, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, Ni and Fe in water and sediment samples to identify a pollution pattern along the Sava River and to investigate the potential impact of these PTEs on the diversity and structure of macrophyte communities. The study, which covered 945 km of the Sava River, showed a downstream increase in sediment concentrations of the analyzed elements. Both species richness and alpha diversity of macrophyte communities also generally increase downstream. Ordinary and partial Mantel tests indicate that macrophyte communities are significantly correlated with sediment chemistry, but only weakly correlated with water chemistry. In the lowland regions (downstream), beta diversity decreases successively, which can be attributed to an increasing similarity of environmental conditions at downstream sites. Species richness is relatively low at sites with low concentrations of Cr, Cd, Fe, and Cu in the sediment. However, species richness increases to a certain extent with increasing element concentrations; as element concentrations increase further, species richness decreases, probably as a result of increased toxicity. Some species that are generally more tolerant to high concentrations of PTEs are: Ceratophyllum demersum, Iris pseudacorus, Najas marina, Butomus umbellatus, Vallisneria spiralis, Potamogeton gramineus and Bolboschoenus maritimus maritimus. Potamogeton perfoliatus and the moss species Cinclidotus fontinaloides and Fontinalis antipyretica have narrow ecological amplitudes in relation to the concentrations of PTEs in the sediment.

In this paper we will describe the former boundaries of the cadastral municipalities in the Slovenian-Italian cross-border area between the Socerb castle and the Rosandra valley. Today, the villages of Socerb and Beka are located on the Slovenian side of the border, and Mačkolje (Caresana), Prebeneg (Prebenico), Dolina (San Dorlingo della Valle), Boljunec (Bagnoli della Rosandra), Kroglje (Crogole), Gornji Konec (Bagnoli Superiore) and Botač (Bottazzo) on the Italian side. At the time of the Franciscan cadastral survey in this area (from 1818 to 1822), i.e., at the time of the Austrian Empire, these villages, except for Mačkolje, belonged to the district of Fünfenberg, which was part of the province of Istria. Therefore, the same type of cadastral municipality boundary marks from the Franciscan or a revised cadastral survey can be found here as elsewhere in the present-day territory of Slovenia. In addition to the twelve boundary stones with inscriptions, we will also present two natural boundary marks: inscriptions carved on the entrance walls of a cave and inscriptions carved on the smooth rock wall. We will also show that the boundary stones in the Primorska region, which have the same shape as the former cadastral municipality boundary stones, could also have once marked former common lands of agrarian communities, here called jusi, and these were not always the same as the cadastral municipality boundaries.

Abstract Key message We applied the generalized algebraic difference approach (GADA) to develop dynamic models of height growth for pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) in Serbia. According to the dominant heights, the studied region comprises some of Europe’s most productive sites for pedunculate oak. Therein, we have generated a map showing the current site index class of stands. Such a map could be used to enhance forest management and evaluate climate change impacts. Context Although sustainable forest management requires reliable prediction of forest site productivity, such indicators are currently unavailable for pedunculate oak sites in Serbia. The site index (SI) curves represent the most commonly used indirect scale for site productivity classification. The dynamic equations derived by the Generalized Algebraic Difference Approach (GADA) are the state-of-the-art approach in growth modeling, but they have not been widely applied for studying the height dynamics of pedunculate oak. Aims The main objectives of this study were to develop the first dynamic site index curves for pedunculate oak in Serbia and subsequently to provide stand-level maps with predicted site indices. Methods We have tested five flexible polymorphic equations with variable asymptotes derived by the GADA approach. Models were calibrated using artificially established growth trajectories obtained from 3636 detailed temporary sample plots. The selection of the most suitable model was accomplished according to (1) quantitative measures of goodness of fit, (2) the analysis of residual scattering, and (3) the biological plausibility of obtained height growth curves. Results After correcting the error terms with a continuous first-order autoregressive structure and conducting a three-stage performance analysis, the GADA dynamic site index model derived from the Hossfeld base equation shows the best overall properties. Insight into the oscillations of relative error suggested that 100 years is the most suitable age for site index referencing. Comparison with existing height growth models revealed greater flexibility and a considerably better representation of the height growth dynamic of pedunculate oak in the studied region. Additionally, we have produced a spatially explicit map showing the expected SI100 for 1907 stands with pedunculate oak within 22 management units. Conclusion Dynamic SI-curves based on GADA will serve forest practitioners to update management plans and serve as a reference point for benchmarking the impact of climate change and for developing adaptation strategies. The utilized approach allowed unbiased estimation of SI100 across all age classes so that the results could be mapped at a broader scale. This study provides the second known application of the dynamic model for pedunculate oak in Europe but the first that includes some of the most productive sites in the species distribution range.

Abstract Educational Robotics (ER) has emerged as one of the tools to improve STEM learning in primary education if students are properly instructed. However, there is a lack of studies that guide teachers on which type of instruction should be used for ER in STEM between direct (DI) and indirect instruction (II). As a result, the present study aims to compare the two types of instructions in terms of their effect on learning outcomes, students’ perceptions, and students’ gender differences. We adopted a quasi-experiment comparative research design involving 100 ninth-grade students (13–14 years old). We collected data through achievement tests and perception questionnaires and analyzed them using Cochran’s Q-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, and independent samples t-test. Results show that the group in which II was used performed better than those from the group where DI was used. Also, the results show that girls performed better with DI than boys. Furthermore, students perceived ER as useful for developing collaboration and interest in STEM. Therefore, teachers should be supported in learning how to use II and DI strategically in ER to enhance STEM learning.

The present study aimed to determinate the effect of external progesterone (P4) supplementation on luteolysis in cows under heat stress. Forty-eight (n=48) dairy cows in the period from July September 2018 were part of and at day 35±3 postpartum scored for BSC, synchronized using PG-3-G + Ovsynch protocol and randomly allocated into two treatments: PRID group (n=27) treated with external P4 device between G1 and PGF2α and CON group (n=21) left without treatment. Collection of blood samples to assess P4 concentrations was done at Pre-PG, at G1, at PGF2α, at 72 h after PGF2α (at timed artificial insemination TAI) and at d 21 after TAI. The pregnancy diagnosis was done at d 21 and d 30 after TAI by ultrasound. The average temperature humidity index (THI) was 79.5±0.6. At G1, the P4 was significantly lower in the PRID group (1.84±0.99 ng/mL) in comparison to the CON group (2.97±1.82 ng/mL). In contrast, at PGF2α, there was a tendency (p=0.09) of increased P4 concentration in PRID group compared with the CON group (4.26±1.68 and 3.74±2.39 ng/mL), respectively. At TAI, more PRID cows (p=0.0001) had a lower P4 (0.06±0.03 ng/mL), in comparison to CON (1.28±2.41 ng/mL). At d 21 and d 30 after TAI, more PRID cows were predicted and diagnosed pregnant (16/27 or 59.25% and 13/27 or 48.14%) compared with the CON group (11/21 or 52.38% and 8/21 or 38.08%) respectively, but without any significant differences. Supplementation of the P4 during the Ovsynch protocol increases the P4 before TAI and reduces the incomplete luteolysis in heat stressed dairy cows.

Abstract Aim The present study aimed to examine the association between copy number variations (CNVs) in parkin (PRKN) and schizophrenia (SCZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in a large case–control sample. Method Array comparative genomic hybridization was performed on 3111 cases with SCZ, 1236 cases with ASD, and 2713 controls. We systematically prioritized likely pathogenic CNVs (LP‐CNVs) in PRKN and examined their association with SCZ and ASD. Results In total, 3014 SCZ cases (96.9%), 1205 ASD cases (97.5%), and 2671 controls (98.5%) passed quality control. We found that monoallelic carriers of LP‐CNVs in PRKN were common (70/6890, 1.02%) and were not at higher risk of SCZ (p = 0.29) or ASD (p = 0.72). We observed that the distribution pattern of LP‐CNVs in the Japanese population was consistent with those in other populations. We also identified a patient diagnosed with SCZ and early‐onset Parkinson's disease carrying biallelic pathogenic CNVs in PRKN. The absence of Parkinson's symptoms in 10 other monoallelic carriers of the same pathogenic CNV further reflects the lack of effect of monoallelic pathogenic variants in PRKN in the absence of a second hit. Conclusion The present findings suggest that monoallelic CNVs in PRKN do not confer a significant risk for SCZ or ASD. However, further studies to investigate the association between biallelic CNVs in PRKN and SCZ and ASD are warranted.

Abstract Whole genome analysis has identified rare copy number variations (CNV) that are strongly involved in the pathogenesis of psychiatric disorders, and 3q29 deletion has been found to have the largest effect size. The 3q29 deletion mice model (3q29-del mice) has been established as a good pathological model for schizophrenia based on phenotypic analysis; however, circadian rhythm and sleep, which are also closely related to neuropsychiatric disorders, have not been investigated. In this study, our aims were to reevaluate the pathogenesis of 3q29-del by recreating model mice and analyzing their behavior and to identify novel new insights into the temporal activity and temperature fluctuations of the mouse model using a recently developed small implantable accelerometer chip, Nano-tag. We generated 3q29-del mice using genome editing technology and reevaluated common behavioral phenotypes. We next implanted Nano-tag in the abdominal cavity of mice for continuous measurements of long-time activity and body temperature. Our model mice exhibited weight loss similar to that of other mice reported previously. A general behavioral battery test in the model mice revealed phenotypes similar to those observed in mouse models of schizophrenia, including increased rearing frequency. Intraperitoneal implantation of Nano-tag, a miniature acceleration sensor, resulted in hypersensitive and rapid increases in the activity and body temperature of 3q29-del mice upon switching to lights-off condition. Similar to the 3q29-del mice reported previously, these mice are a promising model animals for schizophrenia. Successive quantitative analysis may provide results that could help in treating sleep disorders closely associated with neuropsychiatric disorders.

The median age of patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) at diagnosis is 71 years; however, around 10% present with early‐onset pancreatic cancer (EOPC), i.e., before age 50. The molecular mechanisms underlying such an early onset are unknown. We assessed the role of common PDAC drivers (KRAS, TP53, CDKN2A and SMAD4) and determined their mutational status and protein expression in 90 formalin‐fixed, paraffin‐embedded tissues, including multiple primary and matched metastases, from 37 EOPC patients. KRAS was mutated in 88% of patients; p53 was altered in 94%, and p16 and SMAD4 were lost in 86% and 71% of patients, respectively. Meta‐synthesis showed a higher rate of p53 alterations in EOPC than in late‐onset PDAC (94% vs. 69%, P = 0.0009) and significantly higher loss of SMAD4 (71% vs. 44%, P = 0.0025). The majority of EOPC patients accumulated aberrations in all four drivers; in addition, high tumour heterogeneity was observed across all tissues. The cumulative effect of an exceptionally high rate of alterations in all common PDAC driver genes combined with high tumour heterogeneity suggests an important mechanism underlying the early onset of PDAC.

Abstract Existing research indicates that the relationship between digital technology use and insomnia can largely depend on which digital technology measure and which insomnia measure is considered. Data on 4261 Slovenian tertiary students was gathered through an online survey in February 2021, which included measures of depression and insomnia symptoms, as well as measures of internet, social media and video game use divided into three measurement levels (use, duration of use, addictive use). Regression analysis revealed an apparent effect of measurement level, where addictive use measures consistently outperformed other technology use measures in predicting insomnia. Regardless of measurement level, social media use seems to produce more risk for insomnia, compared to playing video games or general internet use for leisure purposes. Importantly, a single measure of depression symptoms explained more variance in insomnia than the nine measures of digital technology use combined, meaning that the effect of digital technology on sleep should not be overstated. Most of the effect of social media use on insomnia may in fact be explained by understanding users' depression symptoms. In case of gaming, a larger part of its effect on insomnia is independent of depression symptoms.

Abstract Interferon gamma (IFNγ) is a critical cytokine known for its diverse roles in immune regulation, inflammation, and tumor surveillance. However, while IFNγ levels were elevated in sera of most newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients, its complex interplay in AML remains insufficiently understood. We aim to characterize these complex interactions through comprehensive bulk and single-cell approaches in bone marrow of newly diagnosed AML patients. We identify monocytic AML as having a unique microenvironment characterized by IFNγ producing T and NK cells, high IFNγ signaling, and immunosuppressive features. IFNγ signaling score strongly correlates with venetoclax resistance in primary AML patient cells. Additionally, IFNγ treatment of primary AML patient cells increased venetoclax resistance. Lastly, a parsimonious 47-gene IFNγ score demonstrates robust prognostic value. In summary, our findings suggest that inhibiting IFNγ is a potential treatment strategy to overcoming venetoclax resistance and immune evasion in AML patients.

Abstract Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) predominantly occurs in adults ≥60 years old; 10–20% of cases are pediatric or adolescent/young adult (AYA) patients. Tagraxofusp (TAG, Elzonris®) is the only approved treatment for BPDCN; in the United States it is approved for patients aged ≥2 years. Data on treating pediatric and AYA BPDCN patients are limited. We present a case series of pediatric and AYA patients with BPDCN treated with TAG. Eight patients (five newly diagnosed; three relapsed/refractory [R/R]), aged 2–21 years, received 12 mcg/kg TAG. Seven patients were female; most had skin (n = 6) and/or bone marrow (n = 4) involvement. No new safety signals were identified. Grade 3 adverse events were headache (n = 1) and transaminitis (n = 2). Three patients with newly diagnosed BPDCN achieved complete response, one achieved partial response, and one had stable disease (SD). One patient with R/R BPDCN achieved a minor response; one had SD. Seven patients (88%) were bridged to stem cell transplant: 80% of newly diagnosed patients and 100% of R/R patients. Five patients remained alive at last follow‐up. These cases highlight the efficacy and safety of TAG in pediatric and AYA patients for whom there is no other approved BPDCN therapy.

Objective It is urgent to diagnose giant cell arteritis (GCA) as quickly as possible to prevent irreversible blindness. The traditional gold standard for diagnosing GCA is temporal artery biopsy (TAB). However, TAB lacks diagnostic performance and carries out risks of surgical intervention. The noninvasive color Doppler ultrasound (CDU) seems to be a promising alternative. This study is designed to assess the diagnostic value of CDU in daily clinical practice. Methods In this prospective cohort study, patients with a clinical suspicion of active GCA were included and underwent a CDU of the temporal arteries. If deemed necessary by the referrer, a TAB and/or 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with computed tomography was performed. The retrospective clinical diagnosis was determined 1 year after inclusion by two physicians experienced in the field of vasculitis. Results 242 patients were included and GCA was diagnosed in 73 (30%) patients by the defined retrospective clinical diagnosis. Compared with the retrospective diagnosis, CDU has a sensitivity of 60% (48–72), specificity of 94% (89–97), positive predictive value (PPV) of 81% (70–89), negative predictive value (NPV) of 85% (80–88), and an accuracy of 84% (78–88). A total of 84 (35%) patients underwent TAB. TAB has a sensitivity of 66% (51–79), specificity of 100% (90–100), PPV of 100% (100), NPV of 67% (58–75), and an accuracy of 80% (70–88). Conclusion This study shows comparable diagnostic performance for CDU and TAB and even better CDU results with a bilateral halo present. Considering the advantages of the noninvasive CDU, it is the diagnostic tool of choice.

Kardiovaskularne bolesti (KVB) su vodeći uzrok pobola i smrtnosti diljem svijeta pa tako i u Hrvatskoj. Budući da je u većine bolesnika prisutno više poremećaja i bolesti kojima su u podlozi u najvećem dijelu isti čimbenici rizika, te kako je nužno svakom bolesniku pristupati kao osobi sa svim poremećajima, danas se govori o novoj paradigmi – kardio-reno-metaboličkom (KRM) sindromu i kardio-reno-metaboličkom zdravlju, u što je neizostavno uključeno i zdravlje mozga. Povišen sistolički arterijski tlak, LDL-kolesterol, pušenje, debljina, šećerna bolest, oštećena bubrežna funkcija, tj. kronična bubrežna bolest, u podlozi kojih je nedovoljno tjelesne aktivnosti, nezdrava prehrana s prekomjernim unosom kuhinjske soli zajedno s onečišćenjem zraka vodeći su uzroci ukupnoga pobola i smrtnosti od KRM bolesti, a napose smrtnosti od KVB. Stručnjaci iz raznih područja ključnih za KRM zdravlje napisali su ovaj dokument s ciljem da bude sastavni dio nacionalnog plana za prevenciju kroničnih nezaraznih bolesti s fokusom na KVB koji treba postati obvezujući, a utemeljen na postojećim smjernicama stručnih društava. Naglašena je važnost pravovremenog probira i postavljanja dijagnoze, no težište je stavljeno i na nužnost organiziranja i provođenja mjera primordijalne i primarne prevencije. Istaknuta je važnost multidisciplinarnoga pristupa i trajnog obrazovanja opće populacije i bolesnika kako bi se promijenile loše životne navike i povećala ustrajnost uzimanja lijekova, ali isto tako podizanje zdravstvene pismenosti zdravstvenih radnika, napose liječnika kako bi se smanjila klinička inercija.

A 74-year-old patient was hospitalized because of pulmonary embolism and deep venous thrombosis. Standard medication therapy was administered but the inferolateral ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) occurred only a few hours after the admission. Coronary angiography was performed, and circumflex artery (ACx) occlusion verified. Initially, thromboaspiration was done, the lesion was predilated with a semi-compliant (SC) balloon and drug eluting stent (DES) was placed. The control angiogram showed a filling defect at the occlusion site, while the expanded stent was visualized in the left main (it did not adequately detach during inflation and was pulled retrograde to the guide catheter). We attempted to remove the stent by passing an SC balloon over the stent and it was pulled under fluoroscopic guidance to the brachial artery. An effort was then made to extract the stent using ˝twisting guide wire technique˝, but without success. Finally, the stent was grasped with an EN Snare® device and removed completely through the sheath. The procedure ended with the repositioning of the guide catheter and implantation of a new stent. In further hospitalization, gastroenterological workup was planned, but because of septic shock and COVID infection, the patient died due to multiorgan failure.

The core objective is to securely transmit digital data over widely accessible voice channels like VoIP or GSM networks. Encryption at the highest security level is applied digitally, but a challenge lies in selecting a modulation technique that effectively converts encrypted digital data into analogue signals capable of navigating the obstacles inherent in voice channels. These channels are lossy and optimized for speech transmission, employing sophisticated signal processing techniques such as Voice Activity Detection (VAD) to maintain speech quality and suppress noise. This paper introduces a novel system design and approach for transmitting Data over Voice (DoV) channels using Offset Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (OQAM) combined with Filter Bank Multicarrier (FBMC) modulation. FBMC/OQAM generates speech-like waveforms that can evade detection by non-speech signal detection mechanisms inherent in voice channels, marking its debut in this domain. In order to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed system, we have simulated the distortion of FBMC/OQAM signals when processed by an AMR-NB codec using MATLAB®. Subsequently, the performance of the proposed modulation technique is evaluated across various real voice channels, considering actual time and phase deformations, real-time voice transmission bit-rate constraints and possible bit errors, which all demand specific waveform structures for synchronization and algorithms for correct demodulation and decoding at the receiver. Evaluation is done for waveforms that were sent through GSM and VoIP channels. The obtained results demonstrate a favorable bit error rate (BER) on the 3G channel compared to existing methods, such as conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (OFDM), thereby proving that FBMC/OQAM is suitable for secure DoV transmission. Finally, the decoded speech from all channels is assessed using Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) metric.

The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of nickel alloy type from the same group, the parameters of flame spraying, as well as the preparation of the substrate and the heat treatments of the substrate on the microstructure of the coating/substrate system. Due to the possibility of applying nickel alloys in corrective maintenance of tools used on elevated working temperatures, hot work tool steel X38CrMoV5-1 was selected as a substrate material. The investigation of the microstructure of the coating/substrate system was carried out according to the factorial design of experiment, where the input factors were varied on two levels. The factors that were varied are: Ni-based self-fluxing alloys - NiCrBSi and NiBSi; distance of the burner from the workpiece - small (6 mm) and large (20 mm); preparation of the substrate - roughened and non-roughened and the heat treatments of the substrate - soft annealed and tempered condition. Ni-based self-fluxing alloys were applied on samples (12,5 × 25 × 25 mm) by flame spraying with simultaneous fusing process. Analysis of the microstructures of the coating/substrate system was carried out on the Leica DM 2500M light microscope. After the conducted analysis the paper concluded that by spraying the selected coatings onto the X38CrMoV5-1 tool steel base, poor quality coatings are obtained, due to the appearance of cracks (NiCrBSi) or separation of the coating from the substrate (NiBSi). This is attributed to the formation of martensitic structure of the substrate after spraying and the presence of residual stresses.

Aktivnosti izvedbenih umjetnosti dramskog i plesnog izražavanja s osobama s invaliditetom, točnije s osobama s intelektualnim teškoćama, kao posebno osjetljivom i marginaliziranom skupinom ljudi, u Republici Hrvatskoj intenziviraju se posljednjih godina. Međutim, ova tema nedovoljno je bila znanstveno i stručno istraživana. U ovome radu pokazat će se kako izvedbene umjetnosti dramskog i plesnog izražavanja iskoristiti u edukacijsko-rehabilitacijskoj praksi, odnosno u osnaživanju osoba s intelektualnim teškoćama u području razvoja samosvijesti i samozastupanja te u poticanju umjetnika za suradnju s osobama s intelektualnim teškoćama u stvaranju umjetničkog djela. Doprinos ostvarivanju ovih ciljeva prikazat će se kroz neposredno iskustvo uključivanja osoba s intelektualnim teškoćama u izvedbene umjetnosti, u proces stvaranja i javnog predstavljanja dvaju glazbeno-scenskih kolaža. Nakana je ovoga rada dati doprinos preusmjeravanju navedenih aktivnosti iz područja socijalne skrbi i povremenih društvenih projekata pojedinaca i nevladinih udruga u područja umjetnosti i kulture. To je važno zbog razumijevanja, prihvaćanja, podrške i implementiranja načela inkluzije u svakodnevnom životu osoba s intelektualnim teškoćama i svih onih s njima povezanih u interakciji na bilo koji način i u bilo kojem opsegu i intenzitetu.

The paper develops a valuation based system for reasoning under uncertainty in the context of threat assessment onboard an underwater vehicle. The focus is on threat posed by the nearby contacts, while the vessel is navigating busy waters with warships, merchant ships and fishing vessels. A graphical model of a valuation network is developed, representing the (uncertain) contextual prior knowledge and received observations over the course of time. Two types of valuations are considered in this context: (1) probability mass functions, assuming that all probabilistic values are known precisely; (2) credal sets (sets of probabilities), when probabilistic values are specified only as the confidence intervals. The performance of two valuation networks is presented, using a typical scenario-log, involving a varying number of different types of contacts over time.

Benigne bolesti anorektalne regije, u koje ubrajamo analne apscese, analne fistule, analne fisure i hemoroidalnu bolest, česta su stanja koja susreću liječnici obiteljske medicine kao i bolnički specijalisti. Unatoč rasprostranjenosti patologije, još uvijek ne postoje jasne smjernice za adekvatno liječenje navedenih stanja, koje se još uvijek često svodi na preporuke koje nemaju uporište u medicini temeljenoj na dokazima. Zbog toga je ekspertna skupina, u kojoj su sudjelovali članovi Hrvatskog društva za digestivnu kirurgiju kojima je uže područje interesa koloproktologija, odlučili sastaviti ove smjernice s namjerom da se standardizira liječenje benignih bolesti anorektalne regije, kako na primarnoj tako i na tercijarnoj razini.

The atomic force microscope (AFM) enables the measurement of sample surfaces at the nanoscale. Reference standards with calibration gratings are used for the adjustment and verification of AFM measurement devices. Thus far, there are no guidelines or guides available in the field of atomic force microscopy that analyze the influence of input parameters on the quality of measurement results, nor has the measurement uncertainty of the results been estimated. Given the complex functional relationship between input and output variables, which cannot always be explicitly expressed, one of the primary challenges is how to evaluate the measurement uncertainty of the results. The measurement uncertainty of the calibration grating step height on the AFM reference standard was evaluated using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The measurements within this study were conducted using a commercial, industrial atomic force microscope.

U radu se uspoređuju model Montessori i singapurski model početne nastave matematike. Kao elementi usporedbe uzeta su teorijska polazišta, nastavne metode, nastavni materijali, matematički zadatci, uloga učitelja i rezultati istraživanja. Singapurski je model usmjeren na poučavanje učenika koje je dosljedno, pragmatično i prilagođeno matematičkim ciljevima te rješavanju problemskih zadataka, dok u modelu Montessori prevladava samostalna aktivnost i igra uz korištenje specifičnih didaktičkih materijala. Oba modela pomažu učenicima u učenju matematičkih sadržaja na smislen, privlačan, zabavan i interaktivan način, a odlikuju ih bolji obrazovni rezultati učenika u nastavi matematike u odnosu na tradicionalan pristup. Zajedničke sastavnice ovih modela nastave matematike su poštivanje učenikove individualnosti, promjene uloge učenika i učitelja u učenju i poučavanju, korištenje odgovarajućih didaktičkih materijala u procesu učenja. S obzirom na uočene prednosti oba modela imaju svoje mjesto u početnoj nastavi matematike.

In recent years, additive manufacturing has become a regular process in various industries, and consequently there is an increasing need to evaluate the environmental aspects of this technology and its associated materials. In this paper, comparative cradle-to-grave life cycle assessments between a conventional product and a 3D-printed alternative made of polylactic acid (PLA) and PLA-wood material were investigated based on the standard ISO 14044:2006. The environmental impact of each product was quantified for 18 categories. The goal of life cycle assessment (LCA) was to determine whether the use of 3D printed PLA/PLA-wood products can be a sustainable alternative to traditional metal products. The paper presents a case study in which a comparative LCA was conducted. The results show that a metal part manufactured using conventional subtractive processes (milling, drilling, welding, etc.) has a higher environmental impact compared to 3D-printed alternatives made from renewable materials. However, there are many sub-issues that need to be adequately addressed.

This study aimed to assess pumpkin leaves as a protein source and determine the feasibility of these proteins to form complexes with alginate for the encapsulation of folic acid. Different isolation protocols, two based on isoelectric precipitation (one with thermal pretreatment and the other with alkali pre-extraction) and one based on stepwise precipitation with ammonium sulfate, were compared regarding the yield and structural properties of the obtained leaf protein concentrates (LPC). The highest purity of protein was achieved using the thermal-acid protocol and the salting-out protocol at 40% saturation. RuBisCO protein was detected by SDS-PAGE in all LPCs, except for the fractions obtained through salting-out at saturation level ≥ 60%. Complexation of the LPC solutions (1 mg/mL) and sodium alginate solution (10 mg/mL) was monitored as a function of LPC:alginate ratio (2:1, 5:1, and 10:1) and pH (2–8) by zeta-potential measurements and confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Based on the results, the strongest interaction between LPCs and alginate occurred at a pH between 2.20 and 2.80 and an LPC:alginate ratio of 10:1. Complexation resulted in particle yields of 42–71% and folic acid entrapment of 46–92%. The LPC-folic acid interactions elucidated by computational protein–ligand docking demonstrated the high potential of RuBisCO as a biocarrier material for folic acid. The in vitro release study in the simulated gastrointestinal fluids indicated that complexes would be stable in gastric conditions, while folic acid would be gradually released in the intestinal fluids.
