A specific software package >>ElectroAnalytical Research Software<< (EARSOFT) for automation of voltammetric measurements using a polarographic analyser PAR 384B connected to a PC computer has been developed. The package enables successful adjustment of PAR 384B for systematic repetitive measurements using a PC. It is particularly advantageous for the experimental data analysis. The EARSOFT implements suitable procedures for automatic electroanalytical measurements such as a standard addition method and pseudopolarography, data processing routines (automatic and manual peak search analysis, baseline correction, polarographic/pseudopolarographic wave logarithmic analysis, linear regression, data smoothing, subtracting, editing, derivation and integration, etc.), as well as data graphic presentation sustaining an overlay up to 50 voltammetric curves (files). Determination of dissolved Cd, Pb and Cu concentrations in groundwater samples by a standard addition method is presented as an example. Determination of dissolved copper(II) species in a seawater sample using the pseudopolarographic approach exemplifies the possibilities of speciation of trace metals in natural water systems. These pseudopolarographic measurements show that copper(II) occurs mainly in the form of inert complexes (> 95%) in the analyzed natural seawater sample.

This summary of the activities and the results achieved in the frame of the bilateral German-Yugoslav research Project "Environmental Research in Aquatic Systems" A. Physical Chemistry and Distribution of Chemicals in the Aquatic Environment B. Radiocoulovoltammetric Characterisation of Trace Metalsin Natural Waters covers the period from 1974 to 1990. In the reported period the research project has resulted with fifty-seven joint scientific contributions. The joint research is carried out between the Institute of Applied Physical Chemistry (ICH-4), KFA Jülich and theCentre for Marine Research Zagreb, the Rudjer Boskovic Institute (CIM-IRB). It started in February, 1974 under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Hans Wolfgang Nürnberg until May 1985, with acting director Dr. H.W. Dürbeck until 1989 and afterwards with the director Prof. Dr. Milan Schwuger forICH-4 and Prof. Dr. Marko Branica for CIM-IRB. Over 20 scientists from both sides were involved in the joint research Project. The results have been presented to the scientific community as publications and at International Congresses and Symposia.Project meetings took place from between Yugoslav 1976 regularly and German scientists every paired year in Yugoslavia. During the meetings, the achieved results were discussed in detail and the future research strategies, plans and programs were discussed and settled.
