Abstract

The evolution of breaking waves propagating towards the shore and more specifically the run-up phase over the swash-zone for surface as well as for internal waves is considered. The study is based on a) laboratory run up experiments for surface waves ; b) laboratory stratified flow experiments and c) on field data describing the internal wave run up. The presentation is focused on the breaking and energy transfer mechanisms common to surface and internal waves in the swash-zone. The mathematical model taking into account turbulent mixing and dispersion effects is discussed.

Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice. Abstract

National audience; Comparées à leurs composantes horizontales (jusqu'à plusieurs dizaines de cm/s), les composantes verticales des courants océaniques sont généralement très faibles (quelques mm/s) dans toutes les régions du monde. En raison de leur rôle majeur dans la distribution verticale des propriétés physiques et biogéochimiques de l'eau de mer, leur connaissance est devenue une sorte de « graal » pour les océanographes. Cependant, leur mesure in-situ représente un véritable défi technique, même en utilisant des instruments sophistiqués tels que les ADCP. Dans ce contexte, nous développons un instrument alternatif, appelé le VVP (Vertical Velocity Profiler). Il s'inspire de plusieurs travaux qui exploitent la différence entre la vitesse verticale réelle Wr d'un planeur sousmarin (~dP/dt, du capteur de pression embarqué) et sa vitesse verticale théorique Wth extraite d'un modèle de vol (e.g. [1]). La vitesse verticale océanique Woc s'exprime ainsi par la simple différence Woc = Wr - Wth en tout point de la colonne d'eau. L’instrument utilise un propulseur qui l’entraîne jusqu'à une profondeur de consigne prédéfinie (jusqu’à 400m actuellement). Une fois la profondeur atteinte, le propulseur est stoppé et le profileur remonte alors lentement (~0,1 m/s) vers la surface sous le seul effet de sa flottabilité. Dans une eau au repos, l'équilibre mécanique entre la flottabilité et la traînée hydrodynamique se traduit par une vitesse verticale de remontée qui ne dépend que de la flottabilité du profileur, de sa géométrie et de la densité de l'eau de mer. Tout écart par rapport à cette vitesse théorique est alors interprété comme un signal de vitesse verticale océanique. Des essais en bassin d'essai, en soufflerie et en mer sont mis en œuvre depuis 2019 afin d'affiner la conception du prototype et d'établir définitivement les paramètres de son modèle de vol.

International audience; Notre projet concerne le développement d’un jeu de dix drones de surface motorisés et coordonnés pour mesurer les variations spatiales de la température de surface de la mer, et fournir pour la première fois des champs de température superficielle de la mer à dix mètres de résolution sur une zone de 50 m x 50 m avec une précision de 0.002°C, et à 10 cm de profondeur, ce qui est sans précédent, au mieux de notre connaissance.On espère ainsi visualiser des variations spatiales de sub-submesoéchelle correspondant soit à des circulations de Langmuir sous l’effet de convergence-divergence du courant de surface généré par le vent, soit à des tourbillons en température, soit à des schémas spatiaux de température de surface correspondant à des risées, à des plumes ou thermiques (wind gustiness), ou à des phénomènes de circulation océanique de surface.Le projet est initié, un prototype a déjà été réalisé, un second prototype est en cours de réalisation, et la demande que nous soumettons ici à LEFE-IMAGO porte sur l’extension du projet à une flotte de dix drones.Référence : Puigserver Cécile, Denis Bourras, Luneau Christopher, Jean-Luc Fuda, Hubert Branger, et al.. Abstract

National audience; Devant les enjeux environnementaux contemporains, il est urgent de trouver des solutions écartant les sources d'énergie fossiles pour fournir de l'énergie. Dans ce contexte, les hydroliennes marines présentent de forts atouts notamment avec un très grand potentiel en France (3,5 GW [1]). Cette technologie est encore émergente et il n'existe pas encore de consensus sur son design notamment sur la problématique de l'axe de rotation horizontal ou vertical. Malgré un rendement a priori plus faible et une position d'équilibre stable qui la rend difficile à démarrer, les hydroliennes à axe vertical présentent différents avantages avec notamment un fonctionnement moins dépendant de la qualité de l'écoulement (direction et taux de turbulence) [2] et sont donc encore en lice dans la course au développement. Afin d'améliorer le rendement et la faculté à démarrer, une piste consiste à modifier l'angle de calage des pales en fonction de leur position lors de la rotation par rapport au courant (angle azimutal) [3].

Abstract

International audience; The ocean fine scale (from the mesoscale to the submesoscale) is susceptible to impact air-sea exchange and has an integral effect on the large scale atmosphere and ocean dynamics. Many recent advances in understanding underlying processes have been obtained from modeling efforts and only few in-situ observational studies exist one of them being the EUREC4A-OA/ATOMIC campaign that was added to the EUREC4A atmospheric campaign. This experiment took place in January-February 2020 in the Northwest Tropical Atlantic Ocean with the aim to collect synchronized ocean and atmosphere data to improve our understanding of the role of fine scale processes in the internal ocean dynamics and air-sea interaction.Four oceanographic vessels, coordinated with air-borne observations and autonomous ocean platforms (underwater gliders, Saildrones, drifters), simultaneously acquired ocean and atmosphere data east of the island of Barbados and further south, up to the border of French Giuana. This way, ocean and atmospheric data was acquired in two contrasting regions: (1) the Trade wind region and (2) a region filled with mesoscale eddies. Operations allowed investigating upper ocean processes from small to mesoscale and from sub-diurnal to monthly.A variety of mesoscale eddies were crossed with diverse characteristics, ranging from shallow cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies to the deep reaching structures. Some of these eddies, and in particular North Brazil Rings, have been previously observed and described in dedicated oceanographic experiments. Nonetheless, the EUREC4A-OA/ATOMIC campaign brings in new details about the vertical structure, the dynamics and the potential impact on air-sea interactions of these mesoscale features.With the various observing platforms it was possible to sample the upper-ocean in great detail, resolving frontal scales and stratification. For example, the remnants of the Amazon plume, flowing northward along the shelf-break and being advected far offshore though NBC rings, create a rich variety of submesoscale fronts and a strong barrier layer impacting air-sea exchange of heat and momentum. The ongoing analyses on the ocean dynamics regional and local structures and specifics of air-sea interaction will be highlighted in this presentation.

Abstract

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred hours of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft, four global-ocean class research vessels, an advanced ground-based cloud observatory, a flotilla of autonomous or tethered measurement devices operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface, a network of water stable isotopologue measurements, complemented by special programmes of satellite remote sensing and modeling with a new generation of weather/climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that \EURECA explored — from Brazil Ring Current Eddies to turbulence induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation — are presented along with an overview \EURECA’s outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.

25. Formation and Evolution of a Freshwater Plume in the Northwestern Tropical Atlantic in February 2020

Abstract

In February 2020, a 120-km-wide freshwater plume was documented by satellite and in situ observations near the Demerara Rise (7°N/54°W-56°W). It was initially stratified in the upper 10 m with a freshwater content of 2–3 m of Amazon water distributed down to 40 m. On February 2nd, ship transects indicate an inhomogeneous shelf structure with a propagating front in its midst, whereas minimum salinity close to 30 pss was observed close to the shelf break on February 5th. The salinity minimum eroded in time but was still observed 13–16 days later with 33.3 pss minimum value up to 400 km from the shelf break. At this time, the mixed layer depth was close to 20 m. The off-shelf flow lasted 10 days, contributing to a plume area extending over 100,000 km2 and associated with a 0.15 Sv (106 m3 s−1) freshwater transport. The off-shelf plume was steered northward by a North Brazil Current ring up to 12°N and then extended westward toward the Caribbean Sea. Its occurrence followed 3 days of favorable wind direction closer to the Amazon estuary, which contributed to north-westward freshwater transport on the shelf. Other such events of freshwater transport in January–March are documented since 2010 in salinity satellite products in 7 out of 10 years, and in 6 of those years, they were preceded by a change in wind direction between the Amazon estuary and the Guianas favoring the north-westward freshwater transport toward the shelf break.

Abstract

The design load from waves on offshore structures are often estimated by aid of experimental studies in wave flumes and basins. When going from open sea to laboratorial conditions a number of factors are either added or omitted such as wind above waves. The paddle-generated waves are based on a spectrum taking the indirect effect of wind into account, whereas the direct effect of wind is left out. Previous studies have focused on the direct effect of wind on waves themselves, but no investigations on the load have been made. The question is whether or not airflow separation, vortexes etc. in the wind field alter physical properties such as steepness of waves, the number of breaking waves and hereby the force; especially the in-line force. To investigate the matter, an experimental study of depth-integrated force on a circular cylinder from irregular waves both with and without wind above, was conducted. An objective, when conducting the tests, was to achieve the same significant wave height whether wind was present or not. Exceedance probability curves for wave crest height, depth-integrated force and pressure were obtained. Moreover, a more descriptive assessment of the phenomena was done by studying the average force shape of the hundred largest force events. In addition, there was applied a phase-based harmonic separation method to explore the wind's effect on the harmonic force components of higher order. The front steepness of the waves was clearly increased with the introduction of wind and further increased, when increasing the wind velocity. The introduction of wind consistently increased the number of breaking waves detected with a breaking criterion. The wave-induced load in the tail of the exceedance probability curve was only increased for some of the sea states, when wind was present. Abstract

In the framework of the PACA Region AEROPITCH contract and the EOLFI project SpinFloat, we have studied the potential benefits of pitching the blades for an offshore vertical axis wind turbine. We built an experimental scale model with a system of three servomotors able to change continuously the angle of wind attack of the three blades continuously during the turbine rotation. Experiments were conducted in the large air-sea wind tunnel of Pytheas Institute in Luminy-Marseille. We have measured the forces, moments, and the rotational speed. We used a particle imaging system (PIV) to characterize the air flow around the blades by a particle imaging system (PIV) with a large seeding particles system. We succeeded to optimize the pitch-control laws to achieve maximum rotational speeds by using a loop optimizer based on genetic algorithm. We then developed CFD numerical simulations taking into account the blade pitching. Numerical results are discussed in comparison with PIV measurements., Dans le cadre du contrat Région PACA AEROPITCH et du projet SpinFloat porté par EOLFI, nous avons étudié les effets que pourraient apporter le contrôle-commande du calage des pales (pitch) pour une éolienne à axe de rotation verticale, à trois pales, destinée à terme à être posée en mer sur un support flottant. Nous avons construit une maquette à l’échelle que nous avons testéedans la grande soufflerie air-mer de l’Institut Pythéas sur Luminy à Marseille. Nous avons conçu un système de servomoteurs permettant de tourner de façon indépendante les trois pales de l’éolienne pour ajuster au mieux l’angle d’attaque des pales par rapport au vent incident à chaque instant de la rotation. Nous avons mesuré les efforts, les vitesses de rotation, et l’écoulement d’air autour des pales par un système d’imagerie de particules (PIV) avec un large système d’ensemencement de particules. Nous avons optimisé des lois de pitch pour atteindre des vitesses de rotation maximales en utilisant une boucle automatique d’optimisation de paramètres par algorithme génétique. Nous avons ensuite développé des simulations numériques CFD prenant en compte le pitchage des pales pendant la rotation. Les résultats numériques sont discutés par comparaison aux mesures PIV.

International audience; Origine de l'étude: A l'occasion de la récente campagne TURBORADAR (projet LEFE, PI P. P. Fraunié), nous avons observé que la température de l'eau à 20 cm sous la surface (nommée SST ciaprès) fluctuait parfois à des échelles de temps inférieures à dix minutes. Dans un cas de réchauffement diurne marqué, la SST fluctue avec un écart type de 0.04°C, et le spectre de puissance de dSST/dt présente un maximum d'énergie à 10 Hz, soit à 50 m de longueur d'onde (hypothèse de Taylor, appliquée sans vérification des conditions), ce qui serait en accord avec la longueur d'onde des vagues dominantes. Ces données ne peuvent caractériser la nature éventuellement bidimensionnelle des structures de SST observées, mais elles constituent une base pour proposer une stratégie d'échantillonnage spatial, basée sur une flotte de quatre dispositifs de surface propulsés, évoluant en parallèle, et espacés de 20 m chacun. Le dispositif retenu et proposé ici permettrait idéalement de restituer des pseudo-images de la SST. Abstract

Sea-surface electromagnetic bias (EM bias), the difference between the mean reflecting surface and the geometric mean sea level, must be accurately determined to realize the full potential of satellite altimeters. A uniformly valid algorithm relating the normalized (or nondimensional) EM bias, i.e., 'bias/significant wave height,' to physical variables has not yet been established, so we conducted laboratory experiments to guide model development. Simultaneous and collocated measurements of surface topography and altimeter backscattered power were made in the large IMST wind-wave facility for a wide range of wind and mechanically generated wave conditions. A small microwave footprint on the water surface was produced by a focused-beam 13.5 GHz radar system that has a high signal-to-noise ratio. Consequently specular facets are easily identifiable and the data show that troughs are on average better reflectors than crests. Dimensional relations seldom yield robust algorithms and in fact, although rather high correlation is found between normalized EM bias and either wind speed or wave height, the laboratory coefficients are considerably greater than those of in situ algorithms. Nondimensional parameterization is more useful for deriving scaling laws, and when the normalized EM bias is displayed as a function of wave height skewness or wave age, laboratory and field data converge into consistent trends. In particular, normalized bias decreases with wave age, but unfortunately, even the wave age model does not account for the effects of mechanically generated waves, which produce appreciable scatter relative to the pure wind cases. Thus, we propose a two-parameter model using 1) a nondimensional wave height, which is computed for local winds, and 2) a significant slope, which is computed for nonlocally generated waves. Analysis of the laboratory data shows that the normalized EM bias for mixed conditions is well modeled as a product of these two parameters.

International audience; Most efforts in the study of the generation and evolution of wind waves and surface drift current have been conducted under constant wind. The balance of the transfer of different properties has been studied mainly for situations where the wave has already reached the equilibrium with the constant wind conditions. Besides, the effect of the vertical section of the drift surface current generation mix in the boundary layer has been poorly studied. The purpose of these experiments is to study the early stages of the generation of waves and drift current under non-stationary wind conditions and to determine a balance in the exchange at the air-water interface for non-equilibrium wind conditions. A total of 16 experiments with a characteristic acceleration and deceleration rate of wind speed were conducted in a large wind-wave facility of Institut Pythéas (Marseille-France). The wave tank is 40 m long, 2.7 m wide and 1 m deep. The air section is 50 m long, 3 m wide and 1.8 m height. The momentum fluxes were estimated from hot wire anemometry at station 7. Also, the free surface displacement was measured along the channel tank at 11 stations where resistance wires were installed, except at stations 1, 2, and 7 where capacitance wires were installed. The sampling frequency for wind velocity and surface displacement measurements was 256 Hz. Water-current measurements were performed with a profiling 3-D acoustic velocimeter. This device measures the first 3.5 cm of the water column with a 100 Hz frequency rate, and a 1 mm vertical space-step. During experiments the wind intensity was abruptly increased with a constant acceleration rate over time, reaching a constant maximum intensity of 13 m/s. This constant velocity remains some time until the intensity is again reduced suddenly. The turbulent kinetic energy flux from the air to the water was determined. In order to analyze the balance of the turbulent kinetic energy in the waterside during accelerated wind conditions, the evolution of surface drift current and Stokes drift current was characterized. Also, the evolution and contribution of mean flow shear production and Stokes shear production will be presented and discussed, as well as the rate of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Abstract

International audience; The effect of wind forcing on monochromatic modulated water waves was investigated both numerically and experimentally in the context of the Modified Non-Linear Schrödinger (MNLS) equation framework. While wind is usually associated with a frequency downshift of the dominant spectral peak, we show that it may induce an upshift of the spectral mean due to an asymmetric amplification of the spectrum. Here the weighted average spectral mean is equal to the ratio of the momentum of the envelope to its norm and it detects any asymmetries in the spectrum (Segur et al. 2005). Wind can however indirectly induce frequency downshifts, by promoting dissipative effects like wave breaking. We highlight that the definition of the up-and downshift in terms of peak frequency or average frequency is critical for a relevant discussion. In our model, the wind input consists of a leading order forcing term that amplifies all frequencies equally and induces a broadening of the spectrum, and a higher order asymmetric term (Brunetti et al. 2014; Brunetti & Kasparian 2014) that amplifies higher frequencies more than lower ones and induces a permanent upshift of the spectral mean. The effect of MNLS + wind is exactly opposite to MNLS + viscosity, where the lower order viscosity terms damp the whole spectrum, while the higher order viscosity terms damp higher frequencies more than lower ones and thus causes a permanent downshift, as evidenced by Carter & Govan (2016). We corroborated the model with wave tank experiments conducted in the IRPHE/Pytheas large wind-wave facility located in Marseille, France. Wave data analysis show the temporary downshift in the spectral peak sense caused by the wind, and the temporary upshift in the spectral mean sense characteristic of the MNLS. As the tank-length was limited, we used long-range simulations to obtain upshift in the spectral mean sense caused by the wind. The limit of the model is reached when breaking events occur.

We observed that wind drag coefficient values are higher for the experiments that present the lower acceleration rate; some field data from previous studies is presented for reference (Large and Pond 1981; Ocampo-Torres et al. 2011; Smith 1980; Yelland and Taylor 1996). The empirical grow curves show that in the experiments with lower acceleration, the wave field is more developed, showing higher dimensional energy and lower dimensional peak frequency. In the evolution of the spectral wave energy, there is first high frequency energy saturation, followed by a downshift of the wave-spectral peak frequency. Under the same wind speed, these two processes are more developed when the acceleration is low. Therefore, the acceleration rate has a direct impact in controlling how the energy and momentum transfer take place from the wind to the wave field. Abstract

Global estimation of wind speeds near the sea-surface can be obtained using normalized radar cross sections sigma(o) from satellite-borne single-frequency altimeters. Indeed recent validation studies of Geosat altimeter-derived wind speeds show that several often cited semiempirical algorithms yield linear trends between wind-speeds from altimeter data and wind speeds from (a) ships of opportunity (Etcheto 1992), (b) buoys (Carter 1992), and (c) atmospheric models (Guillaume 1992). Although the linear trends are striking, there is considerable scatter since the range of standard deviations is from 1.5 to 3 m/s. In fact, the scatter of some particular measurements about the regressions is striking because they depart from the 'standard' by as much as +/- 5 m/s, which is large - even for full gale winds of 20 m/s. These anomalies can cause serious problems for gas exchange, heat, and aerosol estimates. They can also induce considerable errors in wind-driven oceanic circulation models and sea-surface wave models. This paper explores the possibility of improving the accuracy of wind speed estimation using dual-frequency altimeters.

Les solutions de cette équation peuvent être stables ou instables en fonction du paramètre kh lié à la profondeur et au nombre d'onde. Si kh est inférieur à un seuil égal à 1.363, la solution est stable. Donc le domaine d'application des breathers est de ce fait limité aux grandes profondeurs. Cependant, on peut se demander qu'elle est l'évolution de ces trains de vagues quand ils rentrent dans la zone côtière. Pour répondre à cette question, une série d'expériences a été réalisée au Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory (THL) à Taiwan. Summary Breathers are commonly used in physics to deal with modulated and instable wave train problems. For the free surface wave, it is an interesting model to explain one mechanism of the appearance of rogue waves. Breathers are analytical solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The solutions of this equation can be stable or unstable according to the parameter kh which depends on the wave number and the water depth. If kh is lower than a threshold equal to 1.363, the solution is stable. Therefore, the applicability domain of the breather is limited to deep water. However, one may ask, what the evolution of these wave trains is when they enter in the coastal zone. To answer this question, an experimental campaign were conducted at the Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory (THL) à Taiwan.
