This study explores heat and turbulent modulation in three-dimensional multiphase Rayleigh-B\'enard convection using direct numerical simulations. Two immiscible fluids with identical reference density undergo systematic variations in dispersed-phase volume fractions, $0.0 \leq \Upphi \leq 0.5$, and ratios of dynamic viscosity, $\lambda_{\mu}$, and thermal diffusivity, $\lambda_{\alpha}$, within the range $[0.1-10]$. The Rayleigh, Prandtl, Weber, and Froude numbers are held constant at $10^8$, $4$, $6000$, and $1$, respectively. Initially, when both fluids share the same properties, a 10\% Nusselt number increase is observed at the highest volume fractions. In this case, despite a reduction in turbulent kinetic energy, droplets enhance energy transfer to smaller scales, smaller than those of single-phase flow, promoting local mixing. By varying viscosity ratios, while maintaining a constant Rayleigh number based on the average mixture properties, the global heat transfer rises by approximately 25\% at $\Upphi=0.2$ and $\lambda_{\mu}=10$. This is attributed to increased small-scale mixing and turbulence in the less viscous carrier phase. In addition, a dispersed phase with higher thermal diffusivity results in a 50\% reduction in the Nusselt number compared to the single-phase counterpart, owing to faster heat conduction and reduced droplet presence near walls. The formation of small droplets and bubbles in turbulent flows is a crucial process in geophysics and engineering, whose underlying physical mechanism remains a puzzle. In this letter, we address this problem by means of high-resolution numerical simulations, comparing a realistic multiphase configuration with a numerical experiment in which we attenuate the presence of strong velocity gradients either across the whole mixture or in the disperse phase only. Our results show unambiguously that the formation of small droplets is governed by the internal dynamics which occur during the break-up of large drops and that the high vorticity and the extreme dissipation associated to these events are the consequence and not the cause of the breakup.

We investigate the statistics of turbulence in emulsions of two-immiscible fluids of same density. We compute for the first time velocity increments between points conditioned to be located in the same phase or in different phases and examine their probability density functions (PDF) and the associated structure functions (SF). This enables us to demonstrate that the the presence of the interface reduces the skewness of the PDF at scales below the Kolmogorov-Hinze scale and therefore the magnitude of the energy flux towards the dissipative scales, which is quantified by the third-order SF. The analysis of the higher order SFs shows that multiphase turbulence is more intermittent than single-phase turbulence. In particular, the local scaling exponents of the SFs display a saturation about the Kolmogorov-Hinze scale and below, which indicates the presence of large velocity gradients across the interface. Interestingly, the statistics approach of classic homogeneous isotropic turbulence when significantly increasing the viscosity of the dispersed phase.

We explain the origins of yield stress, shear-thinning, and normal stress differences in rigid fiber suspensions. We investigate the interplay between the hydrodynamic, colloidal attractive and repulsive, and inter-fiber contact interactions. The shear-thinning viscosity and finite yield stress obtained from the computational model are in quantitative agreement with experiential results from the literature. In this study, we show that attractive interactions result in yield stress and shear-thinning rheology in the suspensions of rigid fibers. This is an important finding, given the ongoing discussion regarding the origin of the yield stress for suspensions of fibers. The ability of the proposed model to quantitatively predict the rheology is not limited to only shear thinning and yield stress but also extends to normal stresses., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

We study the role of the capillary number, $Ca$ and of the surface wettability on the dynamics of the interface between an invading and a defending phase in a porous medium by means of numerical simulations. We employ a hybrid phase field-immersed boundary approach to successfully model the contact line dynamics over the solid objects. Using a phase-field method which naturally incorporates dynamic wetting we eliminate the need for empirical contact line models to address contact line singularity. We map the two dominant modes governing the motion of the interface, namely, capillary fingering, and stable penetration, in the ($Ca$-$\theta$) plane, with $\theta$ the static contact angle prescribed at the solid pores. Capillary fingering dominates at lower values of $Ca$ and pores hydrophobic to the invading phase, while a stable penetration is observed on hydrophillic surfaces. We present new measurements and analyses, including curvature probability density functions (pdf) and average curvature. We also show that the pressure needed for the invading phase to advance at constant flow rate decreases with the capillary number, and increases with the contact angle at the capillary numbers considered. The latter is due to a significant increase of the length of the interface in the case of capillary fingering. We present a numerical analysis of the rheology of a suspension of red blood cells (RBCs) for different volume fractions in a wall-bounded, effectively inertialess, small amplitude oscillatory shear (SAOS) flow for a wide range of applied frequencies. The RBCs are modeled as biconcave capsules, whose membrane is an isotropic and hyperelastic material following the Skalak constitutive law. The frequency-dependent viscoelasticity in the bulk suspension is quantified by the complex viscosity, defined by the amplitude of the particle shear stress and the phase difference between the stress and shear. SAOS flow basically impedes the deformation of individual RBCs as well as the magnitude of fluid-membrane interactions, resulting in a lower specific viscosity and first and second normal stress differences than in steady shear flow. Although it is known that the RBC deformation alone is sufficient to give rise to shear-thinning, our results show that the complex viscosity weakly depends on the frequency-modulated deformations or orientations of individual RBCs, but rather depends on combinations of the frequency-dependent amplitude and phase difference. The effect of the viscosity ratio between the cytoplasm and plasma and of the capillary number are also assessed.

The dynamics of droplet fragmentation in turbulence is described in the Kolmogorov-Hinze framework. Yet, a quantitative theory is lacking at higher concentrations when strong interactions between the phases and coalescence become relevant, which is common in most flows. Here, we address this issue through a fully-coupled numerical study of the droplet dynamics in a turbulent flow at high Reynolds number. By means of time-space spectral statistics, not currently accessible to experiments, we demonstrate that the characteristic scale of the process, the Hinze scale, can be precisely identified as the scale at which the net energy exchange due to capillarity is zero. Droplets larger than this scale preferentially break up absorbing energy from the flow; smaller droplets, instead, undergo rapid oscillations and tend to coalesce releasing energy to the flow. Further, we link the droplet-size-distribution with the probability distribution of the turbulent dissipation. This shows that key in the fragmentation process is the local flux of energy which dominates the process at large scales, vindicating its locality.

We study the interaction-induced migration of bubbles in shear flow and observe that bubbles suspended in elastoviscoplastic emulsions organise into chains aligned in the flow direction, similarly to particles in viscoelastic fluids. To investigate the driving mechanism, we perform experiments and simulations on bubble pairs, using suspending fluids with different rheological properties. First, we notice that, for all fluids, the interaction type depends on the relative position of the bubbles. If they are aligned in the vorticity direction, they repel, if not, they attract each other. The simulations show a similar behavior in Newtonian fluids as in viscoelastic and elastoviscoplastic fluids, as long as the capillary number is sufficiently large. This shows that the interaction-related migration of the bubbles is strongly affected by the bubble deformation. We suggest that the cause of migration is the interaction between the heterogeneous pressure fields around the deformed bubbles, due to capillary pressure., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures

We propose an analytical model to estimate the interface temperature $\Theta_{\Gamma}$ and the Nusselt number $Nu$ for an evaporating two-layer Rayleigh-B\'enard configuration in statistically stationary conditions. The model is based on three assumptions: (i) the Oberbeck-Boussinesq approximation can be applied to the liquid phase, while the gas thermophysical properties are generic functions of thermodynamic pressure, local temperature, and vapour composition, (ii) the Grossmann-Lohse theory for thermal convection can be applied to the liquid and gas layers separately, (iii) the vapour content in the gas can be taken as the mean value at the gas-liquid interface. We validate this setting using direct numerical simulations (DNS) in a parameter space composed of the Rayleigh number ($10^6\leq Ra\leq 10^8$) and the temperature differential ($0.05\leq\varepsilon\leq 0.20$), which modulates the variation of state variables in the gas layer. To better disentangle the variable property effects on $\Theta_\Gamma$ and $Nu$, simulations are performed in two conditions. First, we consider the case of uniform gas properties except for the gas density and gas-liquid diffusion coefficient. Second, we include the variation of specific heat capacity, dynamic viscosity, and thermal conductivity using realistic equations of state. Irrespective of the employed setting, the proposed model agrees very well with the numerical simulations over the entire range of $Ra-\varepsilon$ investigated.

We present the Fluid Transport Accelerated Solver, FluTAS, a scalable GPU code for multiphase flows with thermal effects. The code solves the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for two-fluid systems, with a direct FFT-based Poisson solver for the pressure equation. The interface between the two fluids is represented with the Volume of Fluid (VoF) method, which is mass conserving and well suited for complex flows thanks to its capacity of handling topological changes. The energy equation is explicitly solved and coupled with the momentum equation through the Boussinesq approximation. The code is conceived in a modular fashion so that different numerical methods can be used independently, the existing routines can be modified, and new ones can be included in a straightforward and sustainable manner. FluTAS is written in modern Fortran and parallelized using hybrid MPI/OpenMP in the CPU-only version and accelerated with OpenACC directives in the GPU implementation. We present different benchmarks to validate the code, and two large-scale simulations of fundamental interest in turbulent multiphase flows: isothermal emulsions in HIT and two-layer Rayleigh-B\'enard convection. FluTAS is distributed through a MIT license and arises from a collaborative effort of several scientists, aiming to become a flexible tool to study complex multiphase flows.

Self-propelled jumping of two polymeric droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces is investigated by three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. Two identical droplets of a viscoelastic fluid slide, meet and coalesce on a surface with contact angle 180 degrees. The droplets are modelled by the Giesekus constitutive equation, introducing both viscoelasticity and a shear-thinning effects. The Cahn-Hilliard Phase-Field method is used to capture the droplet interface. The simulations capture the spontaneous coalescence and jumping of the droplets. The effect of elasticity and shear-thinning on the coalescence and jumping is investigated at capillary-inertial and viscous regimes. The results reveal that the elasticity of the droplet changes the known capillary-inertial velocity scaling of the Newtonian drops at large Ohnesorge numbers; the resulting viscoelastic droplet jumps from the surface at larger Ohnesorge numbers than a Newtonian drop, when elasticity gives rise to visible shape oscillations of the merged droplet. The numerical results show that polymer chains are stretched during the coalescence and prior to the departure of two drops, and the resulting elastic stresses at the interface induce the jumping of the liquid out of the surface. This study shows that viscoelasticity, typical of many biological and industrial applications, affects the droplet behaviour on superhydrophobic and self-cleaning surfaces.

We present a new and efficient phase-field solver for viscoelastic fluids with moving contact line based on a dual-resolution strategy. The interface between two immiscible fluids is tracked by using the Cahn-Hilliard phase-field model, and the viscoelasticity incorporated into the phase-field framework. The main challenge of this approach is to have enough resolution at the interface to approach the sharp-interface methods. The method presented here addresses this problem by solving the phase field variable on a mesh twice as fine as that used for the velocities, pressure, and polymer-stress constitutive equations. The method is based on second-order finite differences for the discretization of the fully coupled Navier-Stokes, polymeric constitutive and Cahn-Hilliard equations, and it is implemented in a 2D pencil-like domain decomposition to benefit from existing highly-scalable parallel algorithms. A FFT-based solver is used for the Helmholtz and Poisson equations with different global sizes. The splitting method proposed by previous authors is used to impose the dynamic contact angle boundary conditions in the case of large density and viscosity ratios. The implementation is validated against experimental data and previous numerical studies in 2D and 3D. The results indicate that the dual-resolution approach produces nearly identical results while saving computational time for both Newtonian and viscoelastic flows in 3D.

We present a numerical study of emulsions in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence at $Re_\lambda=137$. The problem is addressed via Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS), where the Volume of Fluid (VOF) is used to represent the complex features of the liquid-liquid interface. We consider a mixture of two iso-density fluids, where fluid properties are varied with the goal of understanding their role in turbulence modulation, in particular the volume fraction ($0.03<\alpha<0.5$), viscosity ratio ($0.01<\mu_d/\mu_c<100$) and large scale Weber number ($10.6

Recent experiments report that slowly-sheared noncolloidal particle suspensions can exhibit unexpected rate($\omega$)-dependent complex viscosities in oscillatory shear, despite a constant relative viscosity in steady shear. Using a minimal hydrodynamic model, we show that a weak interparticle attraction reproduces this behavior. At volume fractions $\phi=20\sim50$%, the complex viscosities in both experiments and simulations display power-law reductions in shear, with a $\phi$-dependent exponent maximum at $\phi=40$%, resulting from the interplay between hydrodynamic, collision and adhesive interactions. Furthermore, this rate dependence is accompanied by diverging particle diffusivities and pronounced cluster formations even at small oscillation amplitudes $\gamma_0$. Previous studies established that suspensions transition from reversible absorbing states to irreversible diffusing states when $\gamma_0$ exceeds a $\phi$-dependent critical value $\gamma_{0,\phi}^c$. Here, we show that a second transition to irreversibility occurs below an $\omega$-dependent critical amplitude, $\gamma_{0,\omega}^c \leq \gamma_{0,\phi}^c$, in the presence of weak attractions., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We numerically investigate the effects of fiber aspect ratio, roughness, flexibility, and flow inertia on the rheology of concentrated suspensions. We perform direct numerical simulations modeling the fibers, suspended in an incompressible Newtonian fluid, as continuous flexible slender bodies obeying the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. An immersed Boundary Method (IBM) is employed to solve for the motion of fibers. In concentrated suspensions, fibers come into contact due to the presence of asperities on their surface. We assume a normal load-dependent friction coefficient to model contact dynamics and friction, which successfully recovers the shear-thinning behaviour observed in experiments. First, we report the shear rate dependent behavior and the increase in the suspension viscosity with the increasing volume fraction of fibers, fiber roughness, and rigidity. The increase in the viscosity is stronger at a lower shear rate and finite inertia. Simulation results indicate that for the concentrated suspensions, contact stresses between fibers form the dominant contribution to the viscosity. Moreover, we find the first normal stress difference to be positive and to increase with the Reynolds number for flexible fibers. Lastly, we explore the divergence of viscosity for different aspect ratios and roughness of the fibers and predict the jamming volume fraction by fitting the data to the Maron-Pierce law. The jamming volume fraction decreases with increasing the aspect ratio and roughness. We conclude that the contact forces and interparticle friction become one of the crucial factors governing the rheology of flexible fiber suspensions at high concentrations.

We study the effect of droplet coalescence on turbulent wall-bounded flows, by means of direct numerical simulations. In particular, the volume-of-fluid and front-tracking methods are used to simulate turbulent channel flows containing coalescing and non-coalescing droplets, respectively. We find that coalescing droplets have a negligible effect on the drag, whereas the non-coalescing ones steadily increase drag as the volume fraction of the dispersed phase increases: indeed, at 10\% volume fraction, the non-coalescing droplets show a 30\% increase in drag, whereas the coalescing droplets show less than 4\% increase. We explain this by looking at the wall-normal location of droplets in the channel and show that non-coalescing droplets enter the viscous sublayer, generating an interfacial shear stress which reduces the budget for viscous stress in the channel. On the other hand, coalescing droplets migrate towards the bulk of the channel forming large aggregates, which hardly affect the viscous shear stress while damping the Reynolds shear stress. We prove this by relating the mean viscous shear stress integrated in the wall-normal direction to the centreline velocity., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

Much work has been done to understand the settling dynamics of spherical particles in a homogeneous and a stratified fluid. However, the effects of shape anisotropy on the settling dynamics of a particle in a stratified fluid are not completely understood. To this end, we perform numerical simulations for settling oblate and prolate spheroids in a stratified fluid. We present the results for the Reynolds number, $Re$, in the range $80-250$ and the Richardson number, $Ri$, in the range $0-10$. We find that both the oblate and prolate spheroids reorient to the edge-wise and partially edge-wise orientations, respectively, as they settle in a stratified fluid completely different from the steady-state broad-side on orientation observed in a homogeneous fluid. We observe that reorientation instabilities emerge when the velocity magnitude of the spheroids fall below a particular threshold. We also report the enhancement of the drag on the particle from stratification. The torque due to buoyancy effects tries to orient the spheroid in an edge-wise orientation while the hydrodynamic torque tries to orient it to a broad-side on orientation. Below the velocity threshold, the buoyancy torque dominates; resulting in the onset of reorientation instability. Finally, the asymmetry in the distribution of the baroclinic vorticity generation term around the spheroids explains the onset of the reorientation instability.

We perform interface-resolved simulations of finite-size evaporating droplets in weakly-compressible homogeneous shear turbulence (HST). The study is conducted by varying three dimensionless physical parameters: the initial gas temperature over the critical temperature $T_{g,0}/T_c$, the initial droplet diameter over the Kolmogorov scale $d_0/\eta$ and the surface tension, i.e. the shear-based Weber number, $We_{\mathcal{S}}$. For the smallest $We_{\mathcal{S}}$, we first discuss the impact on the evaporation rate of the three thermodynamic models employed to evaluate the gas thermophysical properties: a constant property model and two variable-properties approaches where either the gas density or all the gas properties are allowed to vary. Taking this last approach as reference, the model assuming constant gas properties and evaluated with the "1/3" rule, is shown to predict the evaporation rate better than the model where the only variable property is the gas density. Moreover, we observe that the well-known Fr\"ossling/Ranz-Marshall correlation underpredicts the Sherwood number at low temperatures, $T_{g,0}/T_c=0.75$. Next, we show that the ratio between the actual evaporation rate in turbulence and the one computed in stagnant condition is always much higher than one for weakly deformable droplets: it decreases with $T_{g,0}/T_c$ without approaching unity at the highest $T_{g,0}/T_c$ considered. This suggests an evaporation enhancement due to turbulence also in conditions typical of combustion applications. Finally, we examine the overall evaporation rate and the local interfacial mass-flux at higher $We_{\mathcal{S}}$, showing a positive correlation between evaporation rate and interfacial curvature, especially at the lowest $T_{g,0}/T_c$.

This study presents a novel pressure-based methodology for the efficient numerical solution of a four-equation two-phase diffuse interface model. The proposed methodology has the potential to simulate low-Mach flows with mass transfer. In contrast to the classical conservative four-equation model formulation, the adopted set of equations features volume fraction, temperature, velocity and pressure as the primary variables. The model includes the effects of viscosity, surface tension, thermal conductivity and gravity, and has the ability to incorporate complex equations of state. Additionally, a Gibbs free energy relaxation procedure is used to model mass transfer. A key characteristic of the proposed methodology is the use of high performance and scalable solvers for the solution of the Helmholtz equation for the pressure, which drastically reduces the computational cost compared to analogous density-based approaches. We demonstrate the capabilities of the methodology to simulate flows with large density and viscosity ratios through extended verification against a range of different test cases. Finally, the potential of the methodology to tackle challenging phase change flows is demonstrated with the simulation of three-dimensional nucleate boiling.

We present a fully Eulerian hybrid immersed-boundary/phase-field model to simulate wetting and contact line motion over any arbitrary geometry. The solid wall is described with a volume-penalisation ghost-cell immersed boundary whereas the interface between the two fluids by a diffuse-interface method. The contact line motion on the complex wall is prescribed via slip velocity in the momentum equation and static/dynamic contact angle condition for the order parameter of the Cahn-Hilliard model. This combination requires accurate computations of the normal and tangential gradients of the scalar order parameter and of the components of the velocity. However, the present algorithm requires the computation of averaging weights and other geometrical variables as a preprocessing step. Several validation tests are reported in the manuscript, together with 2D simulations of a droplet spreading over a sinusoidal wall with different contact angles and slip length and a spherical droplet spreading over a sphere, showing that the proposed algorithm is capable to deal with the three-phase contact line motion over any complex wall. The Eulerian feature of the algorithm facilitates the implementation and provides a straight-forward and potentially highly scalable parallelisation. The employed parallelisation of the underlying Navier-Stokes solver can be efficiently used for the multiphase part as well. The procedure proposed here can be directly employed to impose any types of boundary conditions (Neumann, Dirichlet and mixed) for any field variable evolving over a complex geometry, modelled with an immersed-boundary approach (for instance, modelling deformable biological membranes, red blood cells, solidification, evaporation and boiling, to name a few), Comment: 52 pages, 19 figures, Submitted to Journal of Computational Physics

We use interface-resolved simulations to study near-wall turbulence modulation by small inertial particles, much denser than the fluid, in dilute/semi-dilute conditions. We considered three bulk solid mass fractions, $\Psi=0.34\%$, $3.37\%$ and $33.7\%$, with only the latter two showing turbulence modulation. The increase of the drag is strong at $\Psi=3.37\%$, but mild in the densest case. Actually, two distinct regimes of turbulence modulation emerge: for smaller mass fractions, the turbulence statistics are weakly affected and the near-wall particle accumulation increases the drag so the flow appears as a single phase flow at slightly higher Reynolds number. Conversely, at higher mass fractions, the particles modulate the turbulent dynamics over the entire flow, and the interphase coupling becomes more complex. In this case, fluid Reynolds stresses are attenuated, but the inertial particle dynamics increases the drag via correlated velocity fluctuations leading to an overall drag increase. Hence, we conclude that, although particles at high mass fractions reduce the fluid turbulent drag, the solid phase inertial dynamics may still increase the overall drag. However, inspection of the streamwise momentum budget in the two-way coupling limit of vanishing volume fraction, but finite mass fraction, indicates that this trend could reverse at even higher particle load.

We propose and validate a novel experimental technique to measure two-point statistics of turbulent flows. It consists in spreading rigid fibers in the flow and tracking their position and orientation in time and therefore been named ``Fiber Tracking Velocimetry'' (FTV). By choosing different fiber lengths, i.e. within the inertial or dissipative range of scales, the statistics of turbulence fluctuations at the selected lengthscale can be probed accurately by simply measuring the fiber velocity at its two ends, and projecting it along the transverse-to-the-fiber direction. By means of fully-resolved direct numerical simulations and experiments, we show that these fiber-based transverse velocity increments are statistically equivalent to the (unperturbed) flow transverse velocity increments. Moreover, we show that the turbulent energy dissipation rate can be accurately measured exploiting sufficiently short fibers. The technique has been tested against standard Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) of flow tracers with excellent agreement. Our technique overcomes the well-known problem of PTV to probe two-point statistics reliably because of the fast relative diffusion in turbulence that prevents the mutual distance between particles to remain constant at the lengthscale of interest. This problem, making it difficult to obtain converged statistics for a fixed separation distance, is even more dramatic for natural flows in open domains. A prominent example are oceanic currents, where drifters (i.e.~the tracer-particle counterpart used in field measurements) disperse quickly, but at the same time their number has to be limited to save costs. We analyze a suspension of deformable particles in a pressure-driven flow. The suspension is composed of neutrally buoyant initially spherical particles and a Newtonian carrier fluid, and the flow is solved by means of direct numerical simulations, using a fully Eulerian method based on a one-continuum formulation. The solid phase is modeled with an incompressible viscous hyperelastic constitutive relation, and the flow is characterized by three main dimensionless parameters, namely the solid volume fraction, the Reynolds and capillary numbers. The dependency of the effective viscosity on these three quantities is investigated to study the inertial effects on a suspension of deformable particles. It can be observed that the suspension has a shear-thinning behavior, and the reduction in effective viscosity for high shear rates is emphasized in denser configurations. The separate analysis of the Reynolds and capillary numbers reveal that the effective viscosity depends more on the capillary than on the Reynolds number. In addition, our simulations exhibit a consistent tendency for deformable particles to move towards the center of the channel, where the shear rate is low. This phenomenon is particularly marked for very dilute suspensions, where a whole region near the wall is empty of particles. Furthermore, when the volume fraction is increased this near-wall region is gradually occupied, because of higher mutual particle interactions. Deformability also plays an important role in the process. Indeed, at high capillary numbers, particles are more sensitive to shear rate variations and can modify their shape more easily to accommodate a greater number of particles in the central region of the channel.

We study the effect of isotropic porous walls on a plane Couette flow laden with spherical and rigid particles. We perform a parametric study varying the volume fraction between $0$ and $30\%$, the porosity between $0.3$ and $0.9$ and the non-dimensional permeability between $0$ and $7.9 \times 10^{-3}$ We find that the porous walls induce a progressive decrease in the suspension effective viscosity as the wall permeability increases. This behavior is explained by the weakening of the wall-blocking effect and by the appearance of a slip velocity at the interface of the porous medium, which reduces the shear rate in the channel. Therefore, particle rotation and the consequent velocity fluctuations in the two phases are dampened, leading to reduced particle interactions and particle stresses. Based on our numerical evidence, we provide a closed set of equations for the suspension viscosity, which can be used to estimate the suspension rheology in the presence of porous walls.

The rupture of a liquid film due to co-flowing turbulent shear flows in the gas phase is studied using a volume-of-fluid method. To simulate this multiphase problem, we use a simplified numerical setup where the liquid film is 'sandwiched' between two fully developed boundary layers from a turbulent channel simulation. The film deforms and eventually ruptures within the shear zone created by the co-flows. This efficient setup allows systematic variation of physical parameters to gauge their role in the aerodynamically-driven deformation and rupture of a liquid film under fully developed sheared turbulence. The present work presents a detailed study of the developing pressure field over the deforming film and related aerodynamic effects, as previously suggested by other authors, in particular the role of the inviscid lift and drag forces. A cumulative lift force is introduced to capture the effect of the alternating pressure minima and maxima forming over the film which amplify and eventually rupture the film. A velocity scale derived from the lift-induced drag force reflects the state of the turbulent boundary layer over the film and collapses the temporal development of this cumulative lift force as well as the amplitude of film deformation with some success for the different film thicknesses and Reynolds numbers., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures

We study the laminar and turbulent channel flow over a viscous hyper-elastic wall and show that it is possible to sustain an unsteady chaotic turbulent-like flow at any Reynolds number by properly choosing the wall elastic modulus. We propose a physical explanation for this effect by evaluating the shear stress and the turbulent kinetic energy budget in the fluid and elastic layer. We vary the bulk Reynolds number from 2800 to 10 and identify two distinct mechanisms for turbulence production. At moderate and high Reynolds numbers, turbulent fluctuations activate the wall oscillations, which, in turn, amplify the turbulent Reynolds stresses in the fluid. At very low Reynolds number, the only production term is due to the energy input from the elastic wall, which increases with the wall elasticity. This mechanism may be exploited to passively enhance mixing in microfluidic devices.

We present results of interface-resolved simulations of heat transfer in suspensions of finite-size neutrally-buoyant spherical particles for solid volume fractions up to 35% and bulk Reynolds numbers from 500 to 5600. An Immersed Boundary-Volume of Fluid method is used to solve the energy equation in the fluid and solid phase. We relate the heat transfer to the regimes of particle motion previously identified, i.e. a viscous regime at low volume fractions and low Reynolds number, particle-laden turbulence at high Reynolds and moderate volume fraction and particulate regime at high volume fractions. We show that in the viscous dominated regime, the heat transfer is mainly due to thermal diffusion with enhancement due to the particle-induced fluctuations. In the turbulent-like regime, we observe the largest enhancement of the global heat transfer, dominated by the turbulent heat flux. In the particulate shear-thickening regime, however, the heat transfer enhancement decreases as mixing is quenched by the particle migration towards the channel core. As a result, a compact loosely-packed core region forms and the contribution of thermal diffusion to the total heat transfer becomes significant once again. The global heat transfer becomes, in these flows at volume fractions larger than 25%, lower than in single-phase turbulence.

We study the role of surface topology, surface chemistry, and wall superheat temperature on the onset of boiling, bubble nucleation and growth, and the possible formation of an insulating vapour film by means of large-scale MD simulations. In the numerical experiments, we control the system pressure by imposing a constant force on a moving piston. The simulations reveal that the presence of a nanostructure triggers the bubble formation, determines the nucleation site and facilitates the energy transfer from the hot substrate to the water. The surface chemistry, on the other hand, governs the shape of the formed bubble. A hydrophilic surface chemistry accelerates the bubble nucleation, however, decelerates the bubble expansion, thus postponing the formation of the film of vapour. Therefore, a hydrophilic surface provides better energy transfer from the hot wall to the water. We report rheological measurements of a noncolloidal particle suspension in a Newtonian solvent at 40% solid volume fraction. An anomalous, frequency-dependent complex viscosity is found under oscillatory shear (OS) flow, whereas a constant dynamic viscosity is found under the same shear rates in steady shear (SS) flow. We show that this contradiction arises from the underlying microstructural difference between OS and SS, mediated by weak interparticle forces. Discrete element simulations of proxy particle suspensions confirm this hypothesis and reveal an adhesion-induced, shear thinning mechanism with a -1/5 slope, only in OS, in agreement with experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We describe and summarize a class of minimal numerical models emerged from recent development of simulation methods for dense particle suspensions in overdamped linear flows. The main ingredients include (i) a frame-invariant, short-range lubrication model for spherical particles, and (ii) a soft-core, stick/slide frictional contact model activated when particles overlap. We implement a version of the model using a modified velocity-Verlet algorithm that explicitly solves the $N$-body dynamical system in $\mathcal{O}(cN)$ operations, where $c$ is a kernel constant depending on the cutoff of particle interactions. The implementation is validated against literature results on jamming transition and shear thickening suspensions from 40% to 64% volume fractions. Potential strategies to extend the present methodology to non-spherical particles are also suggested for very concentrated suspensions.

Multiphase, compressible and viscous flows are of crucial importance in a wide range of scientific and engineering problems. Despite the large effort paid in the last decades to develop accurate and efficient numerical techniques to address this kind of problems, current models need to be further improved to address realistic applications. In this context, we propose a numerical approach to the simulation of multiphase, viscous flows where a compressible and an incompressible phase interact in the low-Mach number regime. In this frame, acoustics is neglected but large density variations of the compressible phase can be accounted for as well as heat transfer, convection and diffusion processes. The problem is addressed in a fully Eulerian framework exploiting a low-Mach number asymptotic expansion of the Navier-Stokes equations. A Volume of Fluid approach (VOF) is used to capture the liquid-gas interface, built on top of a massive parallel solver, second order accurate both in time and space. The second-order-pressure term is treated implicitly and the resulting pressure equation is solved with the eigenexpansion method employing a robust and novel formulation. We provide a detailed and complete description of the theoretical approach together with information about the numerical technique and implementation details. Results of benchmarking tests are provided for five different test cases.

We perform $3$D numerical simulations to investigate the sedimentation of a single sphere in the absence and presence of a simple cross shear flow in a yield stress fluid with weak inertia. In our simulations, the settling flow is considered to be the primary flow, whereas the linear cross shear flow is a secondary flow with amplitude $10\%$ of the primary flow. To study the effects of elasticity and plasticity of the carrying fluid on the sphere drag as well as the flow dynamics, the fluid is modeled using the elastovisco-plastic (EVP) constitutive laws proposed by \cite{saramito2009new}. The extra non-Newtonian stress tensor is fully coupled with the flow equation and the solid particle is represented by an immersed boundary (IB) method. Our results show that the fore-aft asymmetry in the velocity is less pronounced and the negative wake disappears when a linear cross shear flow is applied. We find that the drag on a sphere settling in a sheared yield stress fluid is reduced significantly as compared to an otherwise quiescent fluid. More importantly, the sphere drag in the presence of a secondary cross shear flow cannot be derived from the pure sedimentation drag law owing to the non-linear coupling between the simple shear flow and the uniform flow. Finally, we show that the drag on the sphere settling in a sheared yield-stress fluid is reduced at higher material elasticity mainly due to the form and viscous drag reduction., Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures

This work presents the GPU acceleration of the open-source code CaNS for very fast massively-parallel simulations of canonical fluid flows. The distinct feature of the many-CPU Navier-Stokes solver in CaNS is its fast direct solver for the second-order finite-difference Poisson equation, based on the method of eigenfunction expansions. The solver implements all the boundary conditions valid for this type of problems in a unified framework. Here, we extend the solver for GPU-accelerated clusters using CUDA Fortran. The porting makes extensive use of CUF kernels and has been greatly simplified by the unified memory feature of CUDA Fortran, which handles the data migration between host (CPU) and device (GPU) without defining new arrays in the source code. The overall implementation has been validated against benchmark data for turbulent channel flow and its performance assessed on a NVIDIA DGX-2 system (16 Tesla V100 32Gb, connected with NVLink via NVSwitch). The wall-clock time per time step of the GPU-accelerated implementation is impressively small when compared to its CPU implementation on state-of-the-art many-CPU clusters, as long as the domain partitioning is sufficiently small that the data resides mostly on the GPUs. The implementation has been made freely available and open-source under the terms of an MIT license.

We perform fully Eulerian numerical simulations of an initially spherical hyperelastic particle suspended in a Newtonian pressure-driven flow in a cylindrical straight pipe. We study the full particle migration and deformation for different Reynolds numbers and for various levels of particle elasticity, to disentangle the interplay of inertia and elasticity on the particle focusing. We observe that the particle deforms and undergoes a lateral displacement while traveling downstream through the pipe, finally focusing at the pipe centerline. We note that the migration dynamics and the final equilibrium position are almost independent of the Reynolds number, while they strongly depend on the particle elasticity; in particular, the migration is faster as the elasticity increases (i.e. the particle is more deformable), with the particle reaching the final equilibrium position at the centerline in shorter times. Our simulations show that the results are not affected by the particle initial conditions, position and velocity. Finally, we explain the particle migration by computing the total force acting on the particle and its different components, viscous and elastic.

The seminal Batchelor-Green's (BG) theory on the hydrodynamic interaction of two spherical particles of radii a suspended in a viscous shear flow neglects the effect of the boundaries. In the present paper we study how a plane wall modifies this interaction. Using an integral equation for the surface traction we derive the expression for the particles' relative velocity as a sum of the BG's velocity and the term due to the presence of a wall at finite distance, z_0. Our calculation is not the perturbation theory of the BG solution, so the contribution due to the wall is not necessarily small. The distance at which the wall significantly alters the particles interaction scales as z_0^{3/5}. The phase portrait of the particles' relative motion is different from the BG theory, where there are two singly-connected regions of open and closed trajectories both of infinite volume. For finite z_0, there is a new domain of closed (dancing) and open (swapping) trajectories. The width of this region behaves as 1/z_0. Along the swapping trajectories, that have been previously observed numerically, the incoming particle is turning back after the encounter with the reference particle, rather than passing it by, as in the BG theory. The region of dancing trajectories has infinite volume. We found a one-parameter family of equilibrium states, overlooked previously, whereas the pair of spheres flows as a whole without changing its configuration. These states are marginally stable and their perturbation yields a two-parameter family of the dancing trajectories, where the particle is orbiting around a fixed point in a frame co-moving with the reference particle. We suggest that the phase portrait obtained at z_0>>a is topologically stable and can be extended down to rather small z_0 of several particle diameters. We present a numerical study of the rheology of a two-fluid emulsion in dilute and semidilute conditions. The analysis is performed for different capillary numbers, volume fraction and viscosity ratio under the assumption of negligible inertia and zero buoyancy force. The effective viscosity of the system increases for low values of the volume fraction and decreases for higher values, with a maximum for about 20 % concentration of the disperse phase. When the dispersed fluid has lower viscosity, the normalised effective viscosity becomes smaller than 1 for high enough volume fractions. To single out the effect of droplet coalescence on the rheology of the emulsion we introduce an Eulerian force which prevents merging, effectively modelling the presence of surfactants in the system. When the coalescence is inhibited the effective viscosity is always greater than 1 and the curvature of the function representing the emulsion effective viscosity vs. the volume fraction becomes positive, resembling the behaviour of suspensions of deformable particles. The reduction of the effective viscosity in the presence of coalescence is associated to the reduction of the total surface of the disperse phase when the droplets merge, which leads to a reduction of the interface tension contribution to the total shear stress. The probability density function of the flow topology parameter shows that the flow is mostly a shear flow in the matrix phase, with regions of extensional flow when the coalescence is prohibited. The flow in the disperse phase, instead, always shows rotational components. The first normal stress difference is positive whereas the second normal difference is negative, with their ratio being constant with the volume fraction. Our results clearly show that the coalescence efficiency strongly affects the system rheology and neglecting droplet merging can lead to erroneous predictions.

We present a numerical method for interface-resolved simulations of evaporating two-fluid flows based on the volume-of-fluid (VoF) method. The method has been implemented in an efficient FFT-based two-fluid Navier-Stokes solver, using an algebraic VoF method for the interface representation, and extended with the transport equations of thermal energy and vaporized liquid mass for the single-component evaporating liquid in an inert gas. The conservation of vaporizing liquid and computation of the interfacial mass flux are performed with the aid of a reconstructed signed-distance field, which enables the use of well-established methods for phase change solvers based on level-set methods. The interface velocity is computed with a novel approach that ensures accurate mass conservation, by constructing a divergence-free extension of the liquid velocity field onto the entire domain. The resulting approach does not depend on the type of interface reconstruction (i.e.\ can be employed in both algebraic and geometrical VoF methods). We extensively verified and validated the overall method against several benchmark cases, and demonstrated its excellent mass conservation and good overall performance for simulating evaporating two-fluid flows in two and three dimensions.

We study suspensions of rigid particles in a plane Couette flow with deformable elastic walls. We find that, in the limit of vanishing inertia, the elastic walls induce shear thinning of the suspension flow such that the effective viscosity decreases as the wall deformability increases. This shear-thinning behavior originates from the interactions between rigid particles, soft wall and carrier fluid; an asymmetric wall deformation induces a net lift force acting on the particles which therefore migrate towards the bulk of the channel. Based on our observations, we provide a closure for the suspension viscosity which can be used to model the rheology of suspensions with arbitrary volume fraction in elastic channels.

We present a direct comparison between interface-resolved and one-way-coupled point-particle direct numerical simulations (DNS) of gravity-free turbulent channel flow laden with small inertial particles, with high particle-to-fluid density ratio and diameter of about $3$ viscous units. The most dilute flow considered, solid volume fraction $O(10^{-5})$, shows the particle feedback on the flow to be negligible, whereas differences with respect to the unladen case, noteworthy a drag increase of about $10\%$, are found for a volume fraction $O(10^{-4})$. This is attributed to a dense layer of particles at the wall, caused by turbophoresis, flowing with large particle-to-fluid apparent slip velocity. The most dilute case is therefore taken as the benchmark for assessing the validity of a widely used point-particle model, where the particle dynamics results only from inertial and nonlinear drag forces. In the bulk of the channel, the first- and second-order moments of the particle velocity from the point-particle DNS agree well with those from the interface-resolved DNS. Close to the wall, however, most of the statistics show major qualitative differences. We show that this difference originates from the strong shear-induced lift force acting on the particles in the near-wall region. This mechanism is well captured by the lift force model due to Saffman (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 22 (2), 1965, pp. 385--400), while other widely used, more elaborate, approaches aiming at extending the lift model for a wider range of particle Reynolds numbers can actually underpredict the magnitude of the near-wall particle velocity fluctuations for the cases analysed here.

The present experimental study addresses the flow of a Yield Stress Fluid with some elasticity (Carbopol gel) in a square duct. The behaviour of two fluids with lower and higher yield stress is investigated at multiple Reynolds numbers $Re^* \in$ (1, 200) and Bingham numbers $Bi \in$ (0.01, 0.35). A secondary flow consisting of eight vortices is observed to recirculate the fluid from the corners to the core. Their extent and intensity grows with increasing $Re^*$. The second objective of this study is to explore the change in flow in the presence of particles. Almost neutrally-buoyant finite-size spherical particles with duct height, $2H$, to particle diameter, $d_p$, ratio of 12 are used at two volume fractions $\phi$ = 5 and 10\%. Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) is used to measure the velocity of these refractive-index-matched spheres, and PIV to extract the fluid velocity. Simple shadowgraphy is also used for qualitatively visualising the development of the particle distribution along the streamwise direction. The particle distribution pattern changes from being concentrated at the four corners, at low flow rates, to being focussed along a diffused ring between the center and the corners, at high flow rates. The presence of particles induces streamwise and wall-normal velocity fluctuations in the fluid phase; however, the primary Reynolds shear stress is still very small compared to turbulent flows. The size of the plug in the particle-laden cases appears to be smaller than the corresponding single phase cases. Similar to Newtonian fluids, the friction factor increases due to the presence of particles, almost independently of the suspending fluid matrix. Interestingly, predictions based on an increased effective suspension viscosity agrees quite well with the experimental friction factor for the concentrations used in this study.
