In this work, we present the first experimental evidence of the presence of zonal flow (ZF) structures in the optimized stellarator Wendelstein 7-X. Using an assortment of diagnostics, flux surface-uniform, electrostatic flow oscillations have been measured, showing a radial scale in the range of tens of ion gyroradii. Such measurements show remarkable agreement with the ZF predicted by local and global non-linear gyrokinetic simulations. These results represent the first direct measurement of ZF in a large stellarator, suitable for the validation of models in reactor relevant conditions., Comment: Submitted to Physical Review Letters

Blazars research is one of the hot topics of contemporary extra-galactic astrophysics. That is because these sources are the most abundant type of extra-galactic gamma-ray sources and are suspected to play a central role in multi-messenger astrophysics. We have used swift_xrtproc, a tool to carry out an accurate spectral and photometric analysis of the Swift-XRT data of all blazars observed by Swift at least 50 times between December 2004 and the end of 2020. We present a database of X-ray spectra, best-fit parameter values, count-rates and flux estimations in several energy bands of over 31,000 X-ray observations and single snapshots of 65 blazars. The results of the X-ray analysis have been combined with other multi-frequency archival data to assemble the broad-band Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) and the long-term light-curves of all sources in the sample. Our study shows that large X-ray luminosity variability on different timescales is present in all objects. Spectral changes are also frequently observed with a "harder-when-brighter" or "softer-when-brighter" behavior depending on the SED type of the blazars. The peak energy of the synchrotron component nu_peak in the SED of HBL blazars, estimated from the log-parabolic shape of their X-ray spectra, also exhibits very large changes in the same source, spanning a range of over two orders of magnitude in Mrk421 and Mrk501, the objects with the best data sets in our sample., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the outcomes of a survey that explores the current practices, needs and expectations of the astrophysics community, concerning four research aspects: open science practices, data access and management, data visualization, and data analysis. The survey, involving 329 professionals from several research institutions, pinpoints significant gaps in matters such as results reproducibility, availability of visual analytics tools and adoption of Machine Learning techniques for data analysis. The interaction between off-resonant laser pulses and excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is attracting increasing interest as a route for the valley-selective coherent control of the exciton properties. Here, we extend the classification of the known off-resonant phenomena by unveiling the impact of a strong THz field on the excitonic resonances of monolayer MoS$_2$. We observe that the THz pump pulse causes a selective modification of the coherence lifetime of the excitons, while keeping their oscillator strength and peak energy unchanged. We rationalize these results theoretically by invoking a hitherto unobserved manifestation of the Franz-Keldysh effect on an exciton resonance. As the modulation depth of the optical absorption reaches values as large as 0.05 dB/nm at room temperature, our findings open the way to the use of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides as compact and efficient platforms for high-speed electroabsorption devices., Comment: 40 pages, 11 figures

We have analysed all the X-ray images centred on Gamma Ray Bursts generated by Swift over the last 15 years using automatic tools that do not require any expertise in X-ray astronomy, producing results in excellent agreement with previous findings. This work, besides presenting the largest medium-deep survey of the X-ray sky and a complete sample of blazars, wishes to be a step in the direction of achieving the ultimate goal of the Open Universe Initiative, that is to enable non expert people to fully benefit of space science data, possibly extending the potential for scientific discovery, currently confined within a small number of highly specialised teams, to a much larger population. We have used the Swift_deepsky Docker container encapsulated pipeline to build the largest existing flux-limited and unbiased sample of serendipitous X-ray sources. Swift_deepsky runs on any laptop or desktop computer with a modern operating system. The tool automatically downloads the data and the calibration files from the archives, runs the official Swift analysis software and produces a number of results including images, the list of detected sources, X-ray fluxes, SED data, and spectral slope estimations. We used our source list to build the LogN-LogS of extra-galactic sources, which perfectly matches that estimated by other satellites. Open Universe for blazars is a set of high-transparency data products for blazar science, and the tools designed to generate them. Blazar astrophysics is becoming increasingly data driven, depending on the integration and combined analysis of large quantities of data from the entire span of observational astrophysics techniques. The project was therefore chosen as one of the pilot activities within the United Nations Open Universe Initiative. In this work we developed a data analysis pipeline called Swift_deepsky, based on the Swift XRTDAS software and the XIMAGE package, encapsulated into a Docker container. Swift_deepsky, downloads and reads low-level data, generates higher-level products, detects X-ray sources and estimates several intensity and spectral parameters for each detection, thus facilitating the generation of complete and up-to-date science-ready catalogues from an entire space-mission dataset. The Docker version of the pipeline and its derived products is publicly available from the Open Universe Website at openuniverse.asi.it. We present the results of a detailed X-ray image analysis based on Swift_deepsky on all Swift XRT observations including a known blazar, carried out during the first 14 years of operations of the Swift Observatory. The resulting database includes over 27,000 images integrated in different X-ray bands, and a catalogue, called 1OUSXB, that provides intensity and spectral information for 33,396 X-ray sources, 8,896 of which are single or multiple detections of 2,308 distinct blazars. All the results can be accessed on-line in a variety of ways: e.g., from the Open Universe portal at openuniverse.asi.it, through Virtual Observatory services, via the VOU-Blazar tool and the SSDC SED builder. Unique optical properties of colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), arising from quantum mechanical confinement of charge within these structures, present a versatile testbed for the study of how high electric fields affect the electronic structure of nanostructured solids. Earlier studies of quasi-DC electric field modulation of QD properties have been limited by the electrostatic breakdown processes under the high externally applied electric fields, which have restricted the range of modulation of QD properties. In contrast, in the present work we drive CdSe:CdS core:shell QD films with high-field THz-frequency electromagnetic pulses whose duration is only a few picoseconds. Surprisingly, in response to the THz excitation we observe QD luminescence even in the absence of an external charge source. Our experiments show that QD luminescence is associated with a remarkably high and rapid modulation of the QD band-gap, which is changing by more than 0.5 eV (corresponding to 25% of the unperturbed bandgap energy) within the picosecond timeframe of THz field profile. We show that these colossal energy shifts can be consistently explained by the quantum confined Stark effect. Our work demonstrates a route to extreme modulation of material properties without configurational changes in material sets or geometries. Additionally, we expect that this platform can be adapted to a novel compact THz detection scheme where conversion of THz fields (with meV-scale photon energies) to the visible/near-IR band (with eV-scale photon energies) can be achieved at room temperature with high bandwidth and sensitivity., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information

Automated arc detection methods are needed to scan the ongoing and next-generation wide-field imaging surveys, which are expected to contain thousands of strong lensing systems. Arc finders are also required for a quantitative comparison between predictions and observations of arc abundance. Several algorithms have been proposed to this end, but machine learning methods have remained as a relatively unexplored step in the arc finding process. In this work we introduce a new arc finder based on pattern recognition, which uses a set of morphological measurements derived from the Mediatrix Filamentation Method as entries to an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). We show a full example of the application of the arc finder, first training and validating the ANN on simulated arcs and then applying the code on four Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of strong lensing systems. The simulated arcs use simple prescriptions for the lens and the source, while mimicking HST observational conditions. We also consider a sample of objects from HST images with no arcs in the training of the ANN classification. We use the training and validation process to determine a suitable set of ANN configurations, including the combination of inputs from the Mediatrix method, so as to maximize the completeness while keeping the false positives low. In the simulations the method was able to achieve a completeness of about 90% with respect to the arcs that are input to the ANN after a preselection. However, this completeness drops to $\sim$ 70% on the HST images. The false detections are of the order of 3% of the objects detected in these images. The combination of Mediatrix measurements with an ANN is a promising tool for the pattern recognition phase of arc finding. We study the evolution of an anisotropic shear-free fluid with heat flux and kinematic self-similarity of the second kind. We found a class of solution to the Einstein field equations by assuming that the part of the tangential pressure which is explicitly time dependent of the fluid is zero and that the fluid moves along time-like geodesics. The energy conditions, geometrical and physical properties of the solutions are studied. The energy conditions are all satisfied at the beginning of the collapse but when the system approaches the singularity the energy conditions are violated, allowing for the appearance of an attractive phantom energy. We have found that, depending on the self-similar parameter $\alpha$ and the geometrical radius, they may represent a naked singularity. We speculate that the apparent horizon disappears due to the emergence of exotic energy at the end of the collapse, or due to the characteristics of null acceleration systems as shown by recent work., Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, published in IJMPD

Here we constructed a charged gravastar model formed by an interior de Sitter spacetime, a charged dynamical infinitely thin shell with an equation of state and an exterior de Sitter-Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime. We find that the presence of the charge is crucial to the stability of these structures. It can as much favor the stability of a bounded excursion gravastar, and still converting it in a stable gravastar, as make disappear a stable gravastar, depending on the range of the charge considered. There is also formation of black holes and, above certain values, the presence of the charge allows the formation of naked singularity . This is an important example in which a naked singularity emerges as a consequence of unstabilities of a gravastar model, which reinforces that gravastar is not an alternative model to black hole., Comment: 7 figures, 6 tables and 19 pages. We consider a gravastar model made of anisotropic dark energy with an infinitely thin spherical shell of a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p = (1-\gamma)\sigma$ with an external de Sitter-Schwarzschild region. It is found that in some cases the models represent the "bounded excursion" stable gravastars, where the thin shell is oscillating between two finite radii, while in other cases they collapse until the formation of black holes or naked singularities. An interesting result is that we can have black hole and stable gravastar formation even with an interior and a shell cons tituted of dark and repulsive dark energy, as also shown in previous work. Besides, in one case we have a dynamical evolution to a black hole (for $\Lambda =0$) or to a naked singularity (for $\Lambda > 0$). Considering the evolution of a perfect fluid with self-similarity of the second kind, we have found that an initial naked singularity can be trapped by an event horizon due to collapsing matter. The fluid moves along time-like geodesics with a self-similar parameter $\alpha = -3$. Since the metric obtained is not asymptotically flat, we match the spacetime of the fluid with a Schwarzschild spacetime. We study the energy loss of an energetic heavy quark produced in a high temperature quark-gluon plasma and travelling a finite distance before emerging in the vacuum. While the retardation time of purely collisional energy loss is found to be of the order of the Debye screening length, we find that the contributions from transition radiation and the Ter-Mikayelian effect do not compensate, leading to a reduction of the zeroth order (in an opacity expansion) energy loss., Comment: QM2006 Proceedings; caption of fig 1 and ref [7] modified in v2

We study the medium-induced energy loss $-\Delta E_0(L_p)$ suffered by a heavy quark produced at initial time in a quark-gluon plasma, and escaping the plasma after travelling the distance $L_p$. The heavy quark is treated classically, and within the same framework $-\Delta E_0(L_p)$ consistently includes: the loss from standard collisional processes, initial bremsstrahlung due to the sudden acceleration of the quark, and transition radiation. The radiative loss {\it induced by rescatterings} $-\Delta E_{rad}(L_p)$ is not included in our study. For a ultrarelativistic heavy quark with momentum $p \gsim 10 {\rm GeV}$, and for a finite plasma with $L_p \lsim 5 {\rm fm}$, the loss $-\Delta E_0(L_p)$ is strongly suppressed compared to the stationary collisional contribution $-\Delta E_{coll}(L_p) \propto L_p$. Our results support that $-\Delta E_{rad}$ is the dominant contribution to the heavy quark energy loss (at least for $L_p \lsim 5 {\rm fm}$), as indeed assumed in most of jet-quenching analyses. However they might raise some question concerning the RHIC data on large $p_{\perp}$ electron spectra., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. New version clarified and simplified. We present a compilation of spectra of 101 Seyfert galaxies obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST-STIS), covering the UV and/or optical spectral range. Information on all the available spectra have been collected in a Mastertable, which is a very useful tool for anyone interested in a quick glance at the existent STIS spectra for Seyfert galaxies in the HST archive, and it can be recovered electronically at the URL address www.if.ufrgs.br/~pat/atlas.htm. Nuclear spectra of the galaxies have been extracted in windows of 0.2 arcsec for an optimized sampling (as this is the slit width in most cases), and combined in order to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and provide the widest possible wavelength coverage. Analytic spherically symmetric solutions of the Einstein field equations coupled with a perfect fluid and with self-similarities of the zeroth, first and second kinds, found recently by Benoit and Coley [Class. Quantum Grav. {\bf 15}, 2397 (1998)], are studied, and found that some of them represent gravitational collapse. When the solutions have self-similarity of the first (homothetic) kind, some of the solutions may represent critical collapse but in the sense that now the "critical" solution separates the collapse that forms black holes from the collapse that forms naked singularities. The formation of such black holes always starts with a mass gap, although the "critical" solution has homothetic self-similarity. The solutions with self-similarity of the zeroth and second kinds seem irrelevant to critical collapse. Yet, it is also found that the de Sitter solution is a particular case of the solutions with self-similarity of the zeroth kind, and that the Schwarzschild solution is a particular case of the solutions with self-similarity of the second kind with the index $\alpha = 3/2$., Comment: Revtex, 12 figures
