3. Differentiating Human and Machine Intelligence with Contextualized Embeddings

Abstract

This thesis explores the application of deep learning models as contextual embedding functions for data enrichment in the Turing test, allowing an AI-based judge that automates the Turing test to more effectively differentiate between human and artificial intelligence inputs in tasks such as image captioning. Image captioning data were manually collected from both humans and AI models such as BLIP and GIT. Static embedding functions are first applied to the data before being propagated through pre-trained deep learning models of various architectures to obtain contextualized embeddings for classification. Specifically, transformers and convolutional neural networks are used to generate contextual embeddings for image and text data respectively. PCA dimensionality reduction is applied on the contextual embedding space to alleviate memory and resource constraints for training the AI-based judge for human-machine classification. AI judges based on support vector machines (SVM), Gaussian Naive Bayes and deep neural networks are trained and evaluated on the contextual embeddings, and the resulting performance metrics for classification accuracy are discussed. Further insights about possible innate differences between humans and AI in the domains of vision and language are analyzed.

Abstract

The collection of essays in this anthology is divided into three categories, namely “social epistemology”, “epistemology”, and “freedom”, respectively. The first category addresses questions related to the social dimensions of knowledge. Various issues are interrogated, including the lack of attention to testimony in much standard philosophizing, the need for advocacy, and the role of history-making in social reconstruction. The second category deals more directly with some of the concepts that generally crop up in the theory of knowledge, provoking questions such as: How much do we really know about each other? What is the content of the knowledge we think we have, and how far does it depend upon our social being? What is the relationship between knowledge and truth? Essays in the third category deal with the concept of freedom both at a personal and a social level and discuss dilemmas such as: To what extent are some of the arguments put forward in favour of genetic determinism flawed or sensible? Does the idea of genetic influence pose a threat to freedom? What is the area within which the subject is, or should be left to do, or be, without interference from other persons? In this era of globalization, is cosmopolitanism or communitarianism by itself sufficient for promoting freedom?Conversations in Philosophy: Knowledge and Freedom is the second book in a series, based on a selection of papers presented at the annual Cave Hill Philosophy Symposium. The first book, Conversations in Philosophy: Crossing the Boundaries (published in 2008, also by Cambridge Scholars Publishing) consisted of essays that revolved around the question of the nature and meaning of philosophy. This second volume of Conversations in Philosophy offers a careful and balanced examination of many issues that recur in discussions on knowledge and freedom. The essays are thoughtful, provocative, and challenging.

May 25 - 27, 1994.While institutional members of an information network may share the use of a common thesaurus, most institutions will need to make additions or changes to the thesaurus based on their particular requirements. Automated thesaurus management systems have not usually taken into account the needs for such local adaptations. While the requirements for networked thesaurus management are complex, it is possible, even in a simple microcomputer-based environment, to meet a significant number of those requirements with a few simple functions. This paper describes basic requirements for managing thesauri in networks, and the means by which these requirements are supported in a specific microcomputer-based multilingual thesaurus system.

Abstract

Mixtures of either sunflower oil or thermodegraded sunflower oil and a standard meal were submitted to an in vitro digestion model. The same experiment was carried out with fluid deep-frying fat and thermodegraded fluid deep-frying fat. The thermodegradation of the oil and fat was provoked by submitting them to 190 degrees C with aeration in a convection oven, and the presence in the headspace of the thermodegraded oil and fat of oxygenated alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes (OalphabetaUAs), such as 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), 4-oxo-2-nonenal (ONE), and 4,5-epoxy-2-decenal (EDE), was monitored by solid phase microextraction (SPME) followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The digestion products were separated by centrifugation in a lipidic phase, an aqueous phase, and a pellet phase. The headspace of these three phases was also studied by SPME/GC-MS to check if the toxic and very reactive OalphabetaUAs above-mentioned remained unaltered after the in vitro digestion process or if they had reacted with the various compounds present in the digestion products, so disappearing from the samples. With the same aim the extract in ethyl acetate of the aqueous and pellet phases, and of the lipidic phase after dilution, were studied by GC-MS. All results obtained showed that a certain proportion of the toxic OalphabetaUAs remains unaltered after digestion, dispersed in the three phases above-mentioned, and thus are bioaccessible in the gastrointestinal tract and so could reach the systemic circulation. Compounds that may originate in Maillard type reactions (2-pentylpyridine) are found among digestion products, proving that these reactions are possible in this process if adequate substrates are present. In addition, it has been shown that toxic metabolites from the synthetic antioxidant BHT, present in fat before digestion, remain unaltered after this process and could reach the systemic circulation.
