Many economic gold deposits on Earth are associated with volcanic arcs. However, little is known about the factors that control the gold endowment of the parental arc magmas. Here, we present new high-precision geochemical data from submarine glasses recovered from the length of the Kermadec arc. We show that the combined systematics of Au, Ag and Cu helps to decipher sources and processes responsible for Au enrichment in arc magmas. These data show that hydrous melting in the Kermadec subarc mantle occurs predominantely at high temperatures in the presence of sulfide liquid. The highest Au (>8 ppb at MgO> 5 wt.%), Au/Cu (up to 6*10 -6 ) and mantle-like Ag/Cu values correspond to high-temperature second-stage melting. Elevated temperatures in a hydrous subarc mantle enables enhanced and multiple-stage melting of highly depleted mantle and thus is a prerequisite of Au enrichment in parental arc magmas.

Greenstone belts are dominated by mafic volcanic rocks with geochemical characteristics that indicate a range of possible geodynamic influences. Many analogies with modern tectonic settings have been suggested. Increasing exploration of the modern oceans and comprehensive sampling of volcanic rocks from the sea floor are now providing unique opportunities to characterize different melt sources and petrogenesis that can be more closely compared to greenstone belts. In this study, we have compiled high-quality geochemical analyses of more than 2,850 unique samples of submarine mafic volcanic rocks (<60 wt % SiO2) from a wide range of settings, including mid-ocean ridges, ridge-hotspot intersections, intraoceanic arc and back-arc spreading centers, and ocean islands. The compiled data show significant geochemical variability spanning the full range of compositions of basalts found in greenstone belts. This diversity is interpreted to be due to variable crustal thickness, dry melting versus wet melting conditions, mantle mixing, and contamination. In particular, different melting conditions have been linked to mantle heterogeneity, complex mantle flow regimes, and short-lived tectonic domains, such as those associated with diffuse spreading, overlapping spreading centers, and triple junctions. These are well documented in the microplate mosaics of the Western Pacific. Systematic differences in mafic volcanic rock compositions in modern oceanic settings are revealed by a combination of principal components analysis and unsupervised hierarchical clustering of the compiled data. Mafic volcanic rocks from most arc-backarc systems have strongly depleted mantle signatures and well-known subduction-related chemistry such as large ion lithophile element (LILE) enrichment in combination with strong negative Nb-Ta anomalies and low heavy rare earth elements (HREEs). Felsic volcanic rocks are abundant in ancient greenstone belts and important host rocks for volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. About half of all VMS deposits are hosted by dacite or rhyolite, an association that reflects anomalous heat flow during rifting, partial melting of basaltic crust, and fractional crystallization in high-level magma chambers. For over 30 years, geochemical signatures of these rocks (e.g., F classification of Archean rhyolites) have been widely used to identify possible hosts for VMS deposits in ancient greenstone belts. However, comparisons with modern oceanic settings have been limited, owing to a lack of samples of felsic volcanic rocks from the sea floor. This is changing with increasing exploration of the oceans. In this study, we have compiled high-quality geochemical analyses of more than 2,200 unique samples of submarine felsic volcanic rocks (>60 wt % SiO2) from a wide range of settings, including mid-ocean ridges, ridge-hot-spot intersections, intraoceanic arc and back-arc spreading centers, and ocean islands. The compiled data show significant geochemical diversity spanning the full range of compositions of rhyolites found in ancient greenstone belts. This diversity is interpreted to reflect variations in crustal thickness, the presence or absence of slab-derived fluids (dry melting versus wet melting), and mantle anomalies. Highly variable melting conditions are thought to be related to short-lived microplate domains, such as those caused by diffuse spreading and multiple overlapping spreading centers. Due to the complexity of 2D magnetic anomaly maps north of 18°S and the sparsity of seismic data, the tectonic evolution of the northern Lau Basin has not yet been unraveled. We use a multi-method approach to reconstruct the formation of the basin at ∼16°S by compiling seismic, magnetic, gravimetric and geochemical data along a 185 km-long crustal transect. We identified a crustal zonation which preserves the level of subduction input at the time of the crust's formation. Paired with the seafloor magnetization, the crustal zonation enabled us to qualitatively approximate the dynamic spreading history of the region. Further assessment of the recent tectonic activity and the degree of tectonic overprinting visible in the crust both suggest a complex tectonic history including a dynamically moving spreading center and the reorganizing of the local magma supply. Comparing the compiled data sets has revealed substantial differences in the opening mechanisms of the two arms of the Overlapping Spreading Center (OSC) that is made up by the northernmost tip of the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center in the east and the southernmost segment of the Mangatolu Triple Junction in the west. The observed transition from a predominantly tectonic opening mechanism at the eastern OSC arm to a magmatic opening mechanism at the western OSC arm coincides with an equally sharp transition from and strongly subduction influenced crust to a crust with virtually no subduction input. The degree of subduction input alters the geochemical composition, as well as the lithospheric stress response. Cruise SO299 DYNAMET from Townsville (Australia) to Singapore aimed at studying the links between geodynamics (regional-scale plate tectonics, local structural geology and volcanism) and metallogeny with a special emphasis on the Au-rich mineralisation on and in the vicinity of Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea. The research programme started on 13th June and ended on 15 th July 2023, totalling to 32.5 working days within the Exclusive Economic Zone of Papua New Guinea and international waters. Underway hydroacoustic and gravity data were additionally recorded in international waters during the transit towards Singapore. The three main working areas targeted the New Ireland Basin at the newly discovered Karambusel vent field (Conical Seamount) and Mussel Cliff, the Weitin Fault area south of New Ireland, and the Mussau Ridge. We performed >4,800 kilometers of hydroacoustic (multibeam echosounder and sub-bottom profiler) and gravimetric surveys, twelve dives with the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) KIEL 6000 from GEOMAR, 16 stations with the TV-guided grab, 20 chain bag dredge and 20 heat flow stations. We recovered a total of 447 rock and 346 sediment samples and took 570 individual gas and fluid samples. We deployed and recovered 18 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) and 16 ocean bottom magneto-telluric (OBMT) instruments in the vicinity of Lihir island. The wealth of samples and data collected during the cruise and complemented by a variety of geophysical, petrological and geochemical analyses post-cruise will aid the development of a new spatial and temporal model of the magmatic and hydrothermal evolution in response to recent plate tectonic changes.

A 1:1,000,000-scale lithostratigraphic assemblage map of the Lau Basin (southwestern Pacific Ocean) has been created using remote predictive mapping (RPM) techniques developed by geological surveys on land. Formation-level geological units were identified in training sets at scales of 1:100,000–1:200,000 in different parts of the basin and then extrapolated to the areas where geological data are sparse. The final compilation is presented together with a quantitative analysis of assemblage-level crustal growth based on area-age relationships of the assigned units. The data sets used to develop mapping criteria and an internally consistent legend for the compilation included high-resolution ship-based multibeam, satellite- and ship-based gravity, magnetics, seafloor imaging, and sampling data. The correlation of units was informed by published geochronological information and kinematic models of basin opening. The map covers >1,000,000 km2 of the Lau-Tonga arc-backarc system, subdivided into nine assemblage types: forearc crust (9% by area), crust of the active volcanic arc (7%), backarc rifts and spreading centers (20%), transitional arc-backarc crust (13%), relict arc crust (38%), relict backarc crust (8%), and undivided arc-backarc assemblages (<5%), plus oceanic assemblages, intraplate volcanoes, and carbonate platforms. Major differences in the proportions of assemblage types compared to other intraoceanic subduction systems (e.g., Mariana backarc, North Fiji Basin) underscore the complex geological makeup of the Lau Basin. Backarc crust formed and is forming simultaneously at 12 different locations in the basin in response to widely distributed extension, and this is considered to be a dominant pattern of crustal accretion in large arc-backarc systems. Abundant volcanic activity occurs in the back-arc region of the northern Tofua island arc where the Northeast Lau Spreading Centre (NELSC) propagates southwards into older crust causing the formation of numerous seamounts at the propagating rift tip. An off-axis volcanic diagonal ridge (DR) occurs at the eastern flank of the NELSC, linking the large rear-arc volcano Niuatahi with the NELSC. New geochemical data from the NELSC, the southern propagator seamounts, and DR reveal that the NELSC lavas are tholeiitic basalts whereas the rear-arc volcanoes typically erupt lavas with boninitic composition. The sharp geochemical boundary probably reflects the viscosity contrast between off-axis hydrous harzburgitic mantle and dry fertile mantle beneath the NELSC. The new data do not indicate an inflow of Samoa plume mantle into the NELSC, confirming previously published He isotope data. The NELSC magmas form by mixing of an enriched and a depleted Indian Ocean-type upper mantle end-member implying a highly heterogeneous upper mantle composition in this area. Most NELSC lavas are little affected by a slab component implying that melting is adiabatic beneath the spreading center. The DR lavas show the influence of a component from the subducted Louisville Seamount Chain, which was previously thought to be restricted to the nearby arc volcanoes Niuatoputapu and Tafahi. This signature is rarely detected along the NELSC implying little mixing of melts from the low-viscosity hydrous portion of the mantle wedge beneath the rear-arc volcanoes into the melting region of the dry mantle beneath the NELSC.

The oldest known, intact sedimentary record of a nascent intraoceanic arc was recovered in a ∼100-m-thick unit (IV) above ca. 49 Ma basaltic basement at International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1438 in the Amami Sankaku Basin. During deposition of Unit IV the site was located ∼250 km from the plate edge, where Izu-Bonin-Mariana subduction initiated at 52 Ma. Basement basalts are overlain by a mudstone-dominated subunit (IVC) with a thin basal layer of dark brown metalliferous mudstone followed by mudstone with sparse, graded laminae of amphibole- and biotite-bearing tuffaceous sandstone and siltstone. Amphibole and zircon ages from these laminae suggest that the intermediate subduction-related magmatism that sourced them initiated at ca. 47 Ma soon after basement formation. Overlying volcaniclastic, sandy, gravity-flow deposits (subunit IVB) have a different provenance; shallow water fauna and tachylitic glass fragments indicate a source volcanic edifice that rose above the carbonate compensation depth and may have been emergent. Basaltic andesite intervals in upper subunit IVB have textures suggesting emplacement as intrusions into unconsolidated sediment on a volcanic center with geochemical and petrological characteristics of mafic, differentiated island arc magmatism. Distinctive Hf-Nd isotope characteristics similar to the least-radiogenic Izu-Bonin-Mariana boninites support a relatively old age for the basaltic andesites similar to detrital amphibole dated at 47 Ma. The absence of boninites at that time may have resulted from the position of Site U1438 at a greater distance from the plate edge. The upper interval of mudstone with tuffaceous beds (subunit IVA) progresses upsection into Unit III, part of a wedge of sediment fed by growing arc-axis volcanoes to the east. International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 351 drilled a rear-arc sedimentary succession ~50 km west of the Kyushu-Palau Ridge, an arc remnant formed by rifting during formation of the Shikoku Basin and the Izu-Bonin-Mariana arc. The ~1-km-thick Eocene to Oligocene deep-marine volcaniclastic succession recovered at Site U1438 provides a unique opportunity to study a nearly complete record of intra-oceanic arc development, from a rear-arc perspective on crust created during subduction initiation rather than supra-subduction seafloor spreading. Detailed facies analysis and definition of depositional units allow for broader stratigraphic analysis and definition of lobe elements. Patterns in gravity-flow deposit types and subunits appear to define a series of stacked lobe systems that accumulated in a rear-arc basin. The lobe subdivisions, in many cases, are a combination of a turbidite-dominated subunit and an overlying debris-flow subunit. Debris flow–rich lobe-channel sequences are grouped into four, 1.6–2 m.y. episodes, each roughly the age range of an arc volcano. Three of the episodes contain overlapping lobe facies that may have resulted from minor channel switching or input from a different source. The progressive up-section coarsening of episodes and the increasing channel-facies thicknesses within each episode suggest progressively prograding facies from a maturing magmatic arc. Submarine geomorphology of the modern Mariana arc and West Mariana Ridge provide present-day examples that can be used to interpret the morphology and evolution of the channel (or channels) that fed sediment to Site U1438, forming the sequences interpreted as depositional lobes. The abrupt change from very thick and massive debris flows to fine-grained turbidites at the unit III to unit II boundary reflects arc rifting and progressive waning of turbidity current and ash inputs. Dabei ist unsere Erde jedoch einzigartig darin, dass hier nicht nur eine, sondern zwei unterschiedliche Krustentypen auftreten, die kontinentale Kruste auf der einen und die ozeanische Kruste auf der anderen Seite.
