We present here a novel strategy based on the covalent grafting of a C -functionalized Ni-cyclam complex onto glassy carbon to achieve heterogeneous electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction in neutral water at low overpotential (-500 mV vs. NHE), with moderate turnover number (TON = 454), high selectivity (85% CO produced) and good faradaic efficiency (56% CO). Direct comparison with the N -functionalized Ni-cyclam analogue highlights the benefits of this approach in terms of CO 2 electroreduction.

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 ) are two climate-sensitive components of gases migrating within sediments and emitted into the water column on continental margins. They are involved in several key biogeochemical processes entering into the global carbon cycle. In order to perform onboard measurements of both the molecular and stable carbon isotope ratios (δ 13 C) of CH 4 and CO 2 of natural gases during oceanic cruises, we have developed a novel approach coupling gas chromatography (GC) with cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS). The coupled devices are connected to a small sample isotope module (SSIM) to form a system called GC-SSIM-CRDS. Small volumes of natural gas samples (<1 mL) are injected into the GC using a headspace autosampler or a gas-tight syringe to separate the chemical components using a Shincarbon ST packed column and for molecular quantification by thermal conductivity detection (TCD). Subsequently, CO 2 from the sample is trapped in a 7 mL loop at 32 °C before being transferred to the CRDS analyzer for sequential determination of the stable carbon isotope ratios of CH 4 and CO 2 in 24 min. The loop is an open column (without stationary phase). This approach does not require the use of adsorbents or cooling for the trapping step. Optimization of the separation step prior to analysis was focused on the influence of two key separation factors 1) the flow of the carrier gas and 2) the temperature of the oven. Our analytical system and the measurement protocol were validated on samples collected from gas seeps in the Sea of Marmara (Turkey). Shallow-water hydrothermal vents are widespread, especially in the Mediterranean Sea, owing to the active volcanism of the area. Apart free microbial communities' investigations, few biological studies have been leaded yet. Investigations of microbial communities associated with Nematoda, an ecologically important group in sediments, can help to improve our overall understanding of these ecosystems. We used a multidisciplinary-approach, based on microscopic observations (scanning electron microscopy: SEM and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization: FISH) coupled with a molecular diversity analysis using metabarcoding, based on the 16S rRNA gene (V3-V4 region), to characterize the bacterial community of a free-living marine nematode and its environment, the shallow hydrothermal vent near Naples (Italy). Observations of living bacteria in the intestine (FISH), molecular and phylogenetic analyses showed that this species of nematode harbors its own bacterial community, distinct from the surrounding sediment and water. We have studied the exopolysaccharide produced by Cobetia marina DSMZ 4741, a marine bacterium isolated from coastal seawater. This strain is able to produce a polysaccharide in presence of carbon sources as glucose, mannitol and alginate. The maximum production occurs in aerobic condition, during the end of the exponential phase. The polymer is a non-viscous, acidic heteropolysaccharide of 270kDa constituted of a repeating unit of: This kind of chemical structure is generally related to K-antigen polysaccharide of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains. This is the first time this type of EPS is described from a marine bacterium. Moreover the polysaccharide exhibits a pyruvate substitution on its 3-deoxy-d-manno-oct-2-ulosonic acid (KDO) residue never encountered before. The discovery of such an unexpected EPS with high biotechnological potential is a new incentive for a better exploration of bioactive marine resources., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.
