RATIONALE (Background): The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has been devastating worldwide. In Canada, alone (as of 16 October 2021) there have been over 1.6 million cases and over 27 thousand deaths from COVID-19 (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2021). We must continue to prepare for any future large-scale public health crises that experts assert are sure to come (Dyer, 2021). A key component to ending the COVID-19 pandemic is the widespread vaccination of the public. Previous research has found that personality is related to opinions and decisions around general health concerns, vaccines overall, and the COVID-19 vaccines, specifically. If someone more strongly believes their knowledge is infallible or feels invulnerable, they can be less accepting of vaccines (Huynh & Senger, 2021; Ravert & Zimet, 2009). These studies provide evidence for why narcissism may play an impact in COVID-19 vaccine readiness. Furthermore, researchers have found links to narcissism and risky decision making (Yang et. al., 2018) which adds to a prediction that those higher in narcissism may be lower in vaccine readiness. Previous research has also shown that personality is related to an individual’s willingness to participate in a hypothetical HIV vaccine trial and that certain personality traits increase drop-off in the usage of diabetes-monitoring devices (Johnson, 2000; Su et. al., 2020). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the HEXACO personality traits (honesty-humility, emotionality, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience), narcissistic traits (grandiose or vulnerable), and overall vaccine readiness. STUDY POPULATION: The participants will be recruited through SONA, where they will receive 0.5 SONA points. They will need to be full-time undergraduate Dalhousie University or King’s College students who have access to the SONA website. METHODS: The study will be fully conducted online (hosted on Qualtrics). The participants will be asked to read an informed consent form, and then to fill out a battery of online self-report questionnaires. They will also be asked to fill out a demographics questionnaire (e.g., gender identity, political alignment, religiosity, living arrangement, and the health of themselves and their cohabitants). IMPLICATIONS: This study will aid in our understanding of what leads to general vaccine hesitancy. It can also aid in the development of better methods of vaccine information rollout to increase vaccination rates in the event of another public health crisis.
