Abstract

Many of the most sensitive physics experiments searching for rare events, like neutrinoless double beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay and dark matter interactions, rely on cryogenic macro-calorimeters operating at the mK-scale. Located underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS), in central Italy, CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) is one of the leading experiments for the search of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, implementing the low-temperature calorimetric technology. We present a novel multi-detector analysis to correlate environmental phenomena with the low-frequency noise of low-temperature calorimeters. Indeed, the correlation of marine and seismic data with data from a pair of CUORE detectors indicates that cryogenic detectors are sensitive not only to intense vibrations generated by earthquakes, but also to the much fainter vibrations induced by marine microseisms in the Mediterranean Sea due to the motion of sea waves. Proving that cryogenic macro-calorimeters are sensitive to such environmental sources of noise opens the possibility of studying their impact on the detectors physics-case sensitivity. Moreover, this study could pave the road for technology developments dedicated to the mitigation of the noise induced by marine microseisms, from which the entire community of cryogenic calorimeters can benefit.

Abstract

We report on a search for magnetic monopoles (MMs) produced in ultraperipheral Pb--Pb collisions during Run-1 of the LHC. The beam pipe surrounding the interaction region of the CMS experiment was exposed to 184.07 \textmu b$^{-1}$ of Pb--Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV center-of-mass energy per collision in December 2011, before being removed in 2013. It was scanned by the MoEDAL experiment using a SQUID magnetometer to search for trapped MMs. No MM signal was observed. The two distinctive features of this search are the use of a trapping volume very close to the collision point and ultra-high magnetic fields generated during the heavy-ion run that could produce MMs via the Schwinger effect. These two advantages allowed setting the first reliable, world-leading mass limits on MMs with high magnetic charge. In particular, the established limits are the strongest available in the range between 2 and 45 Dirac units, excluding MMs with masses of up to 80 GeV at 95\% confidence level., Comment: As accepted by PRL. 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

This paper reports on the instrumentation and expertise developed within the INFN-CHNet network for X-ray and neutron imaging, which enable non-invasive identification of materials and production processes in the field of cultural heritage. INFN-CHNet is the network of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics specifically dedicated to the development and application of scientific methods and technologies to cultural heritage. This article focuses on portable MA-XRF scanners, often complemented by additional techniques, PIXE imaging on a newly developed portable accelerator, X-ray radiography and tomography, exploited to their full potential also through the use of portable systems, and neutron radiography and tomography, which require large-scale facilities. In many respects, the information obtained from X-ray and neutron-based methods is complementary, facilitating a comprehensive characterisation of materials, structures, and manufacturing techniques.

Abstract

Introduction: In patients with Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) related to primary C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1INH), the defective clearance of immune complexes and apoptotic materials along with impairment of normal humoral response potentially leads to autoimmunity. Few studies report evidence on autoimmune diseases in C1INH-HAE, but no large population studies focus on rare connective tissue diseases (RCTDs). We aim at evaluating for the first time prevalence and distribution of RCTDs - Systemic Lupus Erytematosus (SLE), primary Sjogren Syndrome (SjS), primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), Systemic Sclerosis (SSc), and mixed connective tissue diseases (MCTD) in a large Italian cohort of C1INH-HAE patients. Methods: A multicenter observational study includes C1INH-HAE patients from ITACA Centers throughout Italy (time frame Sept 2023-March 2024). Inclusion criteria are i. a defined diagnosis of type I or type II C1INH-HAE; ii. age =15 years (puberty already occurred); iii. enrollment in the ITACA Registry. The diagnosis of SLE, primary SjS, primary APS, SSc, and MCTD are made in accordance with international classification criteria. Results: Data are collected from a total of 855 C1INH-HAE patients referring to 15 ITACA Centers. Patients with concomitant RCTDs were 18/855 (2.1%) with F:M ratio 3.5 and a prevalent type I C1INH-HAE diagnosis (87.2%). A diagnosis of SLE results in 44.5% of cases (n=8) while the remaining diagnoses are primary SjS (22.2%, n=4), primary APS (16.6%, n=3), SSc (11.2%, n=2), and a single case of MCTD (5.5%). The female gender is prevalent in all the RCTDs. Patients on long term prophylaxis (LTP) are significantly prevalent in RCTDs group than in the whole C1INH-HAE population (p<0.01). Conclusions: A relevant prevalence of RCTDs is documented in C1INH-HAE patients, mainly SLE. Patients with RCTDs are on LTP in a significant proportion supporting the idea of a bidirectional link between C1INH-HAE and autoimmunity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: Data on the prognostic impact of the micropapillary component in breast cancer are limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and long-term outcomes of pure and mixed invasive micropapillary breast cancer (IMPC) patients compared to invasive ductal cancer (IDC) patients. Methods: This retrospective study analysed all IMPC and IDC patients treated at the European Institute of Oncology (IEO) between 1997 and 2019. The overall cohort of IMPC patients was divided in two groups, pure and mixed IMPC. Each patient with mixed or pure IMPC was matched with one patient with IDC, based on year of surgery, age, pT, pN, and molecular subtype. Results: A total of 30,115 IDC, 120 pure IMPC and 150 mixed IMPC patients were considered eligible. Compared to IDC, pure and mixed IMPC patients presented a higher rate of locally advanced disease (pT2-T3, pN2-N3), vascular invasion, and Luminal B subtype. After matching, pure and mixed IMPC showed a significant higher rate of vascular invasion compared to IDC patients (p < 0.001). Invasive disease-free survival was better in IDC compared to pure IMPC patients (p = 0.11). Long-term overall survival was significantly worse in pure IMPC group compared to IDC group (p = 0.004), being instead similar between mixed IMPC vs matched IDC (p = 0.07). Conclusion: These real-world data reported the worse prognosis of pure IMPC compared to IDC, highlighting the peculiar prognostic value of the micropapillary subtype itself in the decision-making process of IMPC management. An accurate pre-surgical diagnostic evaluation and a multidisciplinary approach are pivotal to best personalize its treatment.

Abstract

Several studies reported the presence of a recently discovered polyomavirus (PyV), Lyon IARC PyV (LIPyV), in human and domestic animal specimens. LIPyV has some structural similarities to well-established animal and human oncogenic PyVs, such as raccoon PyV and Merkel cell PyV (MCPyV), respectively. In this study, we demonstrate that LIPyV early proteins immortalize human foreskin keratinocytes. LIPyV LT binds pRb, accordingly cell cycle checkpoints are altered in primary human fibroblasts and keratinocytes expressing LIPyV early genes. Mutation of the pRb binding site in LT strongly affected the ability of LIPyV ER to induced HFK immortalization. LIPyV LT also binds p53 and alters p53 functions activated by cellular stresses. Finally, LIPyV early proteins activate telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene expression, via accumulation of the Sp1 transcription factor. Sp1 recruitment to the hTERT promoter is controlled by its phosphorylation, which is mediated by ERK1 and CDK2. Together, these data highlight the transforming properties of LIPyV in in vitro experimental models, supporting its possible oncogenic nature.

Abstract

Detectors are a key feature of the contemporary scientific approach to cultural heritage (CH), both for diagnostics and conservation. INFN-CHNet is the network of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics that develops and applies new instrumentation for the study of CH. This process results in both optimized traditional state-of-the-art and highly innovative detection setups for spectrometric techniques. Examples of the former are X-rays, gamma-rays, visible-light and particles spectrometers tailored for CH applications, with optimized performances, reliability, weight, transportability, cost, absorbed power, and complementarity with other techniques. Regarding the latter, examples are ARDESIA, the array of detectors at the DAFNE-Light facility, the MAXRS detection setup at the Riken-RAL muon beamline and the imaging facilities at the LENA Laboratory. Paths for next-generation instruments have been suggested, as in the case of the X-ray Superconductive Detectors and X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometers, allowing astonishing improvement in energy resolution. Many issues in CH can now be addressed thanks to scientific techniques exploiting the existing detectors, while many others are still to be addressed and require the development of new approaches and detectors.

Abstract

Intra Operative Radiation Therapy (IORT) is a technique based on delivery of a high dose of ionising radiation to the cancer tissue, after tumour ablation, during surgery, while reducing the exposure of normal surrounding tissue. The Novac7 is a new linear accelerator expressly conceived to perform in the operating room. This accelerator supplies electron beams with high dose rate. Because these peculiar characteristics, classical dosimetric techniques are not able to give at once a real-time response and an extensive measure of the absorbed dose. The new system is composed by a grid of scintillating optical fibres coupled with two arrays of photodiodes. The instrument samples the delivered beam at 100 Hz. The dedicated software collects the two projection-signals and reconstructs the bi-dimensional image. Moreover it provides a series of dosimetric parameters. We studied an appropriate reconstruction algorithm searching the best compromise between the computational complexity and an high precision. An accelerator having energies ranging from 3 to 12 MeV has been used for the tests. The system is able to give a real time response (within 30 seconds), the resolution is of 1 millimeter. The response is linear versus dose and the measures are not affected by the high dose rate. The conclusions confirm the capability of the instrument to overcome problems encountered with classic dosimetry, showing that the results obtained strongly encourage the continuation of this research. Synchrotron-based digital radiography and microtomography devices are powerful, nondestructive, high-resolution research tools. In this paper, we present a linear system with a pixel size of 22.5 [micro]m and a field-of-view (FOV) 13 cm long and about 1 mm high. The system is composed of a linear converter GOS screen coupled to an intensified electron-bombarded CCD (EBCCD) camera, by means of a rectangular-to-linear fiber optic adapter. This optical guide is composed of seven bundles, each one transporting light in a coherent way to preserve spatial information. In this way, a high spatial resolution over an extended FOV is obtained. The detector works as an X-ray scanner by means of a high-precision translation mechanical device with 18 cm travel range. The total FOV obtained this way is 13 cm long and 18 cm high. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the feasibility of this system to investigate a large area of a bone and to calculate the appropriate histomorphometric parameters. Here we present an investigation gained at ELETTRA synchrotron facility at Trieste, Italy. A monochromatic 34-keV beam has been used for imaging a human proximal femur, about 9 cm in width, with our system. The reconstructed images (13 cm x 13 cm) were cross sections containing femoral head, femoral neck, and greater trochanter. The local variations in trabecular and cortical structure of the examined bone were clearly visible at a level not obtainable with medical CT scanners. The used spatial resolution allowed the visualization of thin trabeculae, which typically lie in a range of 100 [micro]m or lower. The quality of the reconstructed cross-section images confirmed that the system presented is a novel tool for high resolution three-dimensional (3-D) imaging of bone structure, with a pixel size over a volume of interest not achievable with conventional microCT scanners. Abstract

The potential of imaging by thermal and fast neutrons has been assessed in the Cultural Heritage field, given the fact that this technique is non-invasive and neutrons can penetrate many layers of thick objects. This method provides valuable information to assist preservation and restoration activities and to help dating or attributing through the understanding of the manufacturing techniques. An investigation of the imaging capabilities of the Italian Neutron Experimental Station INES (at the ISIS pulsed neutron source of RAL laboratories, UK) and the Neutron Computerized Tomography and Radiography laboratory (NECTAR at the FRM II reactor in Munich) applied to artwork objects made of metal alloys was carried out. For this purpose custom samples have been prepared, following size and composition of typical ancient works of art. Through neutron tomography the internal structure of the testing metal objects was reconstructed and millimetric scale details inside them were resolved. Moreover, several measurements have been performed to fully characterize the performance of both apparatus. Their imaging response has been analyzed in terms of linearity, signal to noise ratio, dynamic range and resolution by the usage of scintillator screens of different chemical composition and thickness. Abstract

Tourism is a hypercompetitive sector (D'Aveni, 1994, 1998; Della Corte, Sciarelli, 2003; Grant, Baden Fuller, 2003; Della Corte, Sciarelli, Celiento, 2005), for fast running changes of demand and global level competition: this situation has determined over time the need to widen the range of destinations’ offer, with special regard to cities (Conti, Spriano, 1990; Richards, 1992; Bramwell, Rawding, 1994; Czarniawska, Mazza, Pipan, 2001). In this field, events could be a strong attractive factor for cities where they take place. Particularly, the purpose of the paper is double: first, we will look for strategic elements in event management, starting from an analysis of the literature (Bramwell, 1997; Getz, 1992, 1993, 1997, 1998, 2001; Goldblatt, 1997, 1998, 2002, 2004; Watt, 1998) on new directions in the field that is still being explored by scholars; second, we will try to see when and under which conditions an event can become a real attractive factor for a destination, contributing either to destination’s launch or to its market repositioning. Moreover, the research aims at verifying if the planned elements of event management and marketing (Close, Finney, Sneath, 2006), for a city as a destination, are expression of a real event strategy, able to promote a tourist destination, in territorial marketing terms. This overview, starting from the typical resource-based theory (Barney, 1991) setting, with the help of some managerial analysis’ tools, like VRIO framework and SWOT analysis, aims at analyzing quality, identity and branding of the event and of the city which hosts it (Della Corte, Micera, 2007). At both destination and event level, strategic resources are the starting point to evaluate economic and environmental sustainability generated by the event but are also the necessary elements to gain a sustainable competitive advantage in the long term for the destination, even after the event. This can happen only if there is an appropriate hospitality system within the destination and if this succeeds in reproposing the event itself or even other events of the same or of higher level. The empirical part will focus on a longitudinal case studies analysis of some even cases, in order to get to a scientific advance on the field and to managerial implications, useful both for events planners and tourist firms and for Institutional leaders (Gambetti, 2003).
