Several missions following Planck are currently under development, which will provide high-precision measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. Specifically, measurements of the E modes will become nearly limited by cosmic variance, which, especially when considering the sharpness of the E-mode transfer functions, may allow for the ability to detect deviations from the concordance model in the CMB data. We investigate the capability of upcoming missions to scrutinize models that have been proposed to address large-scale anomalies observed in the temperature spectra from WMAP and Planck. To this purpose, we consider four benchmarks that modify the CMB angular power spectra at large scales: models producing suppression, a dip, and amplification in the primordial scalar power spectrum, as well as a beyond-Lambda CDM prescription of dark energy. Our analysis shows that large-scale measurements from LiteBIRD will be able to distinguish between various types of primordial and late-time models that predict modifications to the angular spectra at these scales. Moreover, if these deviations from the standard cosmological model are determined to be systematic and do not reflect the true universe model, future experiments could potentially dismiss these features as statistical fluctuations. We also show that additional measurements from CMB-S4 can impose more stringent constraints by probing correlated signals that these models predict at smaller scales (l>100). A byproduct of our analysis is that a recently proposed "Dark Dimension" scenario, featuring power amplification at large scales, is strongly bound by current data, pushing the deviation from the standard model to unobservable scales. Various scenarios of cosmic inflation enhance the amplitude of the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) at frequencies detectable by the LISA detector. We develop tools for a template-based analysis of the SGWB and introduce a template databank to describe well-motivated signals from inflation, prototype their template-based searches, and forecast their reconstruction with LISA. Specifically, we classify seven templates based on their signal frequency shape, and we identify representative fundamental physics models leading to them. By running a template-based analysis, we forecast the accuracy with which LISA can reconstruct the template parameters of representative benchmark signals, with and without galactic and extragalactic foregrounds. We identify the parameter regions that can be probed by LISA within each template. Finally, we investigate how our signal reconstructions shed light on fundamental physics models of inflation: we discuss their impact for measurements of \emph{e.g.,} ~the couplings of inflationary axions to gauge fields; the graviton mass during inflation; the fluctuation seeds of primordial black holes; the consequences of excited states during inflation, and the presence of small-scale spectral features., Comment: 82 pages, 29 figures; v2 matches version published in JCAP

The existence of a primordial stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) is a common prediction in various models of the early Universe. Despite constraints at different frequency ranges and claims of detection in the nHz range by Pulsar Timing Arrays, the amplitude and spectral dependence of the SGWB in the mHz range remain largely unknown. Plausible models of early Universe Physics predict a wide range of SGWB amplitudes, from undetectable to exceeding the constraints from Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. This paper explores the potential impact of a prominent primordial SGWB on LISA's main scientific targets. Our main analyses focuses on Massive Black Hole Binaries (MBHBs). By employing publicly available MBHB population models and state-of-the-art LISA's forecasting pipeline, we analyze the effects of the SGWB on MBHB detections. We find that the decrease in the signal-to-noise ratio induced by a strong primordial GWB can significantly reduce the number of detectable events, compromise the precision of constraints, and even hinder sky localization for some events. We also examine the impact of the SGWB on Stellar Origin Black Hole Binaries (SOBHBs) and Galactic Binaries (GBs), which are fainter sources than MBHBs. Depending on the spectral properties of the SGWB, we conclude that these sources could be either marginally affected or rendered completely undetectable. The in-in formalism provides a way to systematically organize the calculation of primordial correlation functions. Although its theoretical foundations are now firmly settled, the treatment of total time derivative interactions, incorrectly trivialized as ``boundary terms'', has been the subject of intense discussions and conceptual mistakes. In this work, we demystify the use of total time derivatives -- as well as terms proportional to the linear equations of motion -- and show that they can lead to artificially large contributions cancelling at different orders of the in-in operator formalism. We discuss the treatment of total time derivative interactions in the Lagrangian path integral formulation of the in-in perturbation theory, and we showcase the importance of interaction terms proportional to linear equations of motion. We then provide a new route to the calculation of primordial correlation functions, which avoids the generation of total time derivatives, by working directly at the level of the full Hamiltonian in terms of phase-space variables. Instead of integrating by parts, we perform canonical transformations to simplify interactions. We explain how to retrieve correlation functions of the initial phase-space variables from the knowledge of the ones after canonical transformations. As an important first application, we find the explicit sizes of Hamiltonian cubic interactions in single-field inflation with canonical kinetic terms and for any background evolution [...]. Gravitational Waves (GW) sourced by second-order primordial curvature fluctuations are among the favoured models fitting the recent Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) measurement of a Stochastic GW Background (SGWB). We study how spectral distortions (SDs) and anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) can constrain such scalar fluctuations. Whereas COBE FIRAS data have no sufficient sensitivity to probe the PTA lognormal hypothesis, we show how future PIXIE-like experiments can detect the CMB SDs from the scalar-induced interpretation of the SGWB in PTA data. We consider a model of early modified gravity (EMG) that was recently proposed as a candidate to resolve the Hubble tension. The model consists in a scalar field $\sigma$ with a non-minimal coupling (NMC) to the Ricci curvature of the form $F(\sigma) = M_{\mathrm{pl}}^2+\xi\sigma^2$ and an effective mass induced by a quartic potential $V(\sigma) = \lambda \sigma^4/4$. We present the first analyses of the EMG model in light of the latest ACT DR4 and SPT-3G data in combination with full Planck data, and find a $\gtrsim 2\sigma$ preference for a non-zero EMG contribution from a combination of primary CMB data alone, mostly driven by ACT DR4 data. This is different from popular 'Early Dark Energy' models, which are detected only when the high-$\ell$ information from Planck temperature is removed. We find that the NMC plays a key role in controlling the evolution of density perturbations that is favored by the data over the minimally coupled case. Including measurements of supernovae luminosity distance from Pantheon+, baryonic acoustic oscillations and growth factor from BOSS, and CMB lensing of Planck leaves the preference unaffected. In the EMG model, the tension with S$H_0$ES is alleviated from $\sim 6\sigma$ to $\sim 3\sigma$. Astrometric surveys can be used to constrain the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) at very low frequencies. We use proper motion data provided by Gaia DR3 to fit a generic dipole+quadrupole field. We analyse several quasar-based datasets and discuss their purity and idoneity to set constraints on gravitational waves. For the cleanest dataset, we derive an upper bound on the (frequency-integrated) energy density of the SGWB $h_{70}^2\Omega_{\rm GW}\lesssim 0.087$ for $4.2\times 10^{-18}~\mathrm{Hz}\lesssim f\lesssim 1.1\times 10^{-8}~\mathrm{Hz}$. We also reanalyse previous VLBI-based data to set the constraint $h_{70}^2\Omega_{\rm GW}\lesssim 0.024$ for $5.8\times 10^{-18}~\mathrm{Hz}\lesssim f\lesssim 1.4\times 10^{-9}~\mathrm{Hz}$ under the same formalism, standing as the best astrometric constraint on GWs. We investigate the two-stage inflation regime in the theory of hybrid cosmological $\alpha$-attractors. The spectrum of inflationary perturbations is compatible with the latest Planck/BICEP/Keck results, thanks to the attractor properties of the model. Inflationary models predicting a scale-dependent large amplification of the density perturbations have recently attracted a lot of attention because the amplified perturbations can seed a sizable amount of primordial black holes (PBHs) and stochastic background of gravitational waves (GWs). While the power spectra in these models are computed based on the linear equation of motion, it is not obvious whether loop corrections are negligible when such a large amplification occurs during inflation. In this paper, as a first step to discuss the loop corrections in such models, we use the in-in formalism and calculate the one-loop scalar power spectrum numerically and analytically in an illustrative model where the density perturbations are resonantly amplified due to oscillatory features in the inflaton potential. Our calculation is technically new in that the amplified perturbations are numerically taken into account in the in-in formalism for the first time. In arriving at our analytical estimates, we highlight the role that the Wronskian condition of perturbations, automatically satisfied in our model, plays in obtaining the correct estimates. We also discuss the necessary conditions for subdominant loop corrections in this model. We find that, for the typical parameter space leading to the $\mathcal O(10^7)$ amplification of the power spectrum required for a sufficient PBH production, the one-loop power spectrum dominates over the tree-level one, indicating the breakdown of the perturbation theory., Comment: 42 pages, 14 figures, v3: An error in the equation of the two-vertex contribution corrected. Future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments will deliver extremely accurate measurements of the E-modes pattern of the CMB polarization field. Given the sharpness of the E-modes transfer functions, such surveys make for a powerful detector of high-frequency signals from primordial features that may be lurking in current data sets. With a handful of toy models that increase the fit to the latest Planck data, but are of marginal statistical significance, we use a state-of-the-art forecast pipeline to illustrate the promising prospects to test primordial features in the next decade. Not only will future experiments allow us to detect such features in data, but they will also be able to discriminate between models and narrow down the physical mechanism originating them with high statistical significance. On the other hand, if the anomalies in the currently measured CMB spectra are just statistical fluctuations, all the current feature best fit candidates will be ruled out. Cosmic inflation provides a window to the highest energy densities accessible in nature, far beyond those achievable in any realistic terrestrial experiment. Theoretical insights into the inflationary era and its observational probes may therefore shed unique light on the physical laws underlying our universe. This white paper describes our current theoretical understanding of the inflationary era, with a focus on the statistical properties of primordial fluctuations. In particular, we survey observational targets for three important signatures of inflation: primordial gravitational waves, primordial non-Gaussianity and primordial features. With the requisite advancements in analysis techniques, the tremendous increase in the raw sensitivities of upcoming and planned surveys will translate to leaps in our understanding of the inflationary paradigm and could open new frontiers for cosmology and particle physics. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Unresolved sources of gravitational waves (GWs) produced by the merger of a binary of black holes at cosmological distances combine into a stochastic background. Such a background is in the continuous or popcorn regime, depending on whether the GW rate is high enough so that two or more events overlap in the same frequency band. These two regimes respectively correspond to large and small values of the so-called {\it duty cycle}. We study the detection regime of the background in models of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) and compare it to the one produced by black holes of stellar origin. Focusing on ground-based detectors, we show that the duty cycle of the PBH-origin background is larger than that of astrophysical black holes because of differences in their mass function and the merger rate. The mass distribution of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) is affected by drops in the pressure of the early Universe plasma. For example, events in the standard model of particle physics, such as the $W^\pm/Z^0$ decoupling, the quark-hadron transition, the muon and pion becoming non-relativistic, and the annihilation of electrons and positrons, cause a suppression in the Equation of State parameter and leave peaks in the PBH mass function around $10^{-6},\,2,\,60$, and $10^6\, M_\odot$, respectively, in the case of a nearly scale-invariant primordial power spectrum. The superposition of unresolved mergers of such PBHs results in a stochastic gravitational-wave background (SGWB) that covers a wide range of frequencies and can be tested with future gravitational wave (GW) detectors. In this paper, we discuss how its spectral shape can be used to infer properties about inflation, the thermal history of the Universe, and the dynamics of binary formation in dense halos encoded in their merger rate formula. The residuals of the power spectra of WMAP and Planck's cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies data are known to exhibit a few interesting anomalies at different scales with marginal statistical significance. Combining bottom-up and top-down model-building approaches and using a pipeline that efficiently compares model predictions with data, we construct a model of primordial standard clock that is able to link and address the anomalies at both the large and small scales. This model, and its variant, provide some of the best fits to the feature anomalies in CMB. According to Bayes evidences, these models are currently statistically indistinguishable from the Standard Model. We show that the difference between them will soon become statistically significant with various higher quality data on the CMB polarization. We propose an inflationary primordial feature model that can explain both the large and small-scale anomalies in the currently measured cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy spectra, revealing a clip of adventurous history of the Universe during its primordial epoch. Although the model is currently statistically indistinguishable from the Standard Model, we show that future observations such as the Simons Observatory and LiteBIRD will complement each other in distinguishing the model differences due to their accurate E-mode polarization measurements, and the PICO mission, if funded, can put stringent constraints on all characteristic properties. We study the effects of pre-recombination physics on the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) anisotropies induced by the propagation of gravitons through the large-scale density perturbations and their cross-correlation with Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature and E-mode polarization ones. As examples of Early Universe extensions to the $\Lambda$CDM model, we consider popular models featuring extra relativistic degrees of freedom, a massless non-minimally coupled scalar field, and an Early Dark Energy component. Assuming the detection of a SGWB, we perform a Fisher analysis to assess in a quantitative way the capability of future gravitational wave interferometers (GWIs) in conjunction with a future large-scale CMB polarization experiment to constrain such variations. Our results show that the cross-correlation of CMB and SGWB anisotropies will help tighten the constraints obtained with CMB alone, with an improvement that significantly depends on the specific model as well as the maximum angular resolution $\ell_{\rm max}^{\rm GW}$ of the GWIs, their designed sensitivity, and the amplitude $A_*$ of the monopole of the SGWB., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures; v2: version published by PRD

In this paper, we use a complete model of classical primordial standard clocks as an example to develop a methodology of directly comparing numerical predictions from complicated multi-field feature models with the Planck data, including the Planck 2018 Plik unbinned likelihood and the statistically most powerful CamSpec 2020 likelihood for temperature and polarization data. As this two-field inflationary model offers a plethora of primordial feature spectra that represent combinations of sharp and resonance feature signals non-trivially distributed over extended cosmological scales, its data comparison has not been satisfactorily addressed by previous attempts using analytical templates. The method of this paper, consisting of numerical prediction, effective parameter construction and nested sampling data comparison, allows us to efficiently explore every possible spectra from the model. We classify the resulting feature candidates in three different frequency ranges. We use the Bayesian evidences to assess the statistical significance of the candidates over the baseline model, taking into account the effect of additional parameters and the look-elsewhere effect. The stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) offers a new opportunity to observe signals of primordial features from inflationary models. We study their detectability with future space-based gravitational waves experiments, focusing our analysis on the frequency range of the LISA mission. We compute gravitational wave spectra from primordial features by exploring the parameter space of a two-field inflation model capable of generating different classes of features. Fine-tuning in scales and amplitudes is necessary for these signals to fall in the observational windows. Once they show up, several classes of frequency-dependent oscillatory signals, characteristic of different underlying inflationary physics, may be distinguished and the SGWB provides a window on dynamics of the primordial universe independent of cosmic microwave background and large-scale structure. To connect with future experimental data, we discuss two approaches of how the results may be applied to data analyses. First, we discuss the possibility of reconstructing the signal with LISA, which requires a high signal-to-noise ratio. The second more sensitive approach is to apply templates representing the spectra as estimators. We present a model of Early Modified Gravity (EMG) consisting in a scalar field $\sigma$ with a non-minimal coupling to the Ricci curvature of the type $M^2_{\rm pl}+\xi \sigma^2$ plus a cosmological constant and a small effective mass and demonstrate its ability to alleviate the $H_0$ tension while providing a good fit to Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data. In this model the scalar field, frozen deep in the radiation era, grows around the redshift of matter-radiation equality because of the coupling to non-relativistic matter. The small effective mass, which we consider here as induced by a quartic potential, then damps the scalar field into coherent oscillations around its minimum at $\sigma=0$, leading to a weaker gravitational strength at early times and naturally recovering the consistency with laboratory and Solar System tests of gravity. We analyze the capability of EMG with positive $\xi$ to fit current cosmological observations and compare our results to the case without an effective mass and to the popular early dark energy models with $\xi=0$. We show that EMG with a quartic coupling of the order of $\lambda\sim\mathcal{O}({\rm eV}^4/M_{\rm pl}^4)$ can substantially alleviate the $H_0$ tension also when the full shape of the matter power spectrum is included in the fit in addition to CMB and Supernovae (SN) data., Comment: 32 pages, 11 figures; v2, 26 pages, 11 figures, minor changes, accepted for publication in PRD

One of the most appealing approaches to ease the Hubble tension is the inclusion of an early dark energy (EDE) component that adds energy to the Universe in a narrow redshift window around the time of recombination and dilutes faster than radiation afterwards. In this paper, we analyze EDE in the framework of $\alpha$-attractor models. As well known, the success in alleviating the Hubble tension crucially depends on the shape of the energy injection. We show how different types of energy injections can be easily obtained, thanks to the freedom in choosing the functional form of the potential inspired by $\alpha$-attractor models. To confirm our intuition we perform an MCMC analysis for three representative cases and find indeed that $H_0$ is significantly larger than in $\Lambda$CDM like in other EDE models. Primordial black holes (PBHs) generated by gravitational collapse of large primordial overdensities can be a fraction of the observed dark matter. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism to produce a large peak in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) in two-field inflationary models characterized by two stages of inflation based on a large non-canonical kinetic coupling. This mechanism is generic to several two-field inflationary models, due to a temporary tachyonic instability of the isocurvature perturbations at the transition between the two stages of inflation. We numerically compute the primordial perturbations from largest scales to the small scales corresponding to that of PBHs using an extension of BINGO (BI-spectra and Non-Gaussianity Operator). Moreover we numerically compute the stochastic background of gravitational waves (SBGW) produced by second order scalar perturbations within frequencies ranging from nano-Hz to KHz that covers the observational scales corresponding to Pulsar Timing Arrays, Square Kilometer Array to that of Einstein telescope. We use $Planck$ 2018 data to constrain the simplest models of scalar-tensor theories characterized by a coupling to the Ricci scalar of the type $F(\sigma) R$ with $F(\sigma) = N_{pl}^2 + \xi \sigma^2$. We update our results with previous $Planck$ and BAO data releases obtaining the tightest constraints to date on the coupling parameters, that is $\xi < 5.5 \times 10^{-4}$ for $N_{pl}=0$ (induced gravity or equivalently extended Jordan-Brans-Dicke) and $(N_{pl} \sqrt{8 \pi G})-1 < 1.8 \times 10^{-5}$ for $\xi = -1/6$ (conformal coupling), both at 95% CL. Because of a modified expansion history after radiation-matter equality compared to the $\Lambda$CDM model, all these dynamical models accommodate a higher value for $H_0$ and therefore alleviate the tension between $Planck$/BAO and distance-ladder measurement from SNe Ia data from $4.4\sigma$ at best to $2.3\sigma$. We show that all these results are robust to changes in the neutrino physics. In comparison to the $\Lambda$CDM model, partial degeneracies between neutrino physics and the coupling to the Ricci scalar allow for smaller values $N_{\rm eff} \sim 2.8$, $1\sigma$ lower compared to the standard $N_{\rm eff} = 3.046$, and relax the upper limit on the neutrino mass up to 40%., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables. We provide further evidence that a massless cosmological scalar field with a non-minimal coupling to the Ricci curvature of the type $M^2_{\rm pl}(1+\xi \sigma^n/M_{\rm pl}^n) $ alleviates the existing tension between local measurements of the Hubble constant and its inference from CMB anisotropies and baryonic acoustic oscillations data in presence of a cosmological constant. In these models, the expansion history is modified compared to $\Lambda$CDM at early time, mimicking a change in the effective number of relativistic species, and gravity weakens after matter-radiation equality. Compared to $\Lambda$CDM, a quadratic ($n=2$) coupling increases the Hubble constant when {\em Planck} 2018 (alone or in combination with BAO and SH0ES) measurements data are used in the analysis. Negative values of the coupling, for which the scalar field decreases, seem favored and consistency with Solar System can be naturally achieved for a large portion of the parameter space without the need of any screening mechanism. We investigate the generation of features at large scales in the primordial power spectrum (PPS) when inflation is driven by two scalar fields. In canonical single field models of inflation, these features are often generated due to deviations from the slow-roll regime. While deviations from slow-roll can be naturally achieved in two field models due to a sharp turn in the trajectory in the field space, features at the largest scales of the types suggested by CMB temperature anisotropies are more difficult to achieve in models involving two canonical scalar fields due to the presence of isocurvature fluctuations. We show instead that a coupling between the kinetic terms of the scalar fields can easily produce such features.
