We are proposing a hybrid superconductor-semiconductor platform using indium arsenide (InAs) grown on an insulating layer of indium aluminum arsenide (InAlAs) heterostructure (InAsOI) as an ideal candidate for coherent caloritronic devices. These devices aim to heat or cool electrons out of equilibrium with respect to the phonon degree of freedom. However, their performances are usually limited by the strength of the electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling and the associated power loss. Our work discusses the advantages of the InAsOI platform, which are based on the significantly low e-ph coupling measured compared to all-metallic state-of-the-art caloritronic devices. Thermoelectric devices that operate on quantum principles have been under extensive investigation in the past decades. These devices are at the fundamental limits of miniaturized heat engines and refrigerators, advancing the field of quantum thermodynamics. Most research in this area concerns the use of conduction electrons and holes as charge and heat carriers, and only very recently have superconductors been considered as thermal engines and thermoelectric devices. Here, we investigate the thermoelectric response of an Abrikosov vortex in type-II superconductors in the deep quantum limit. We consider two thermoelectric geometries, a type-II SIN junction and a local Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)-tip normal metal probe over the superconductor. We exploit the strong breaking of particle-hole symmetry in bound states at sub-gap energies within the superconducting vortex to realize a giant thermoelectric response in the presence of fluxons. We predict a thermovoltage of a few mV/K at sub-Kelvin temperatures using both semi-analytic and numerical self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Relevant thermoelectric coefficients and figures of merit are found within our model, both in linear and nonlinear regimes. The ZT of the SIN junction is around 1, rising to above 3 for the STM junction centered at the vortex core. We study nonlocal thermoelectricity in a superconducting wire subject to spin-orbit coupling and a magnetic field with a relative orientation $\theta$ between them. We calculate the current flowing in a normal probe attached to the bulk of a superconducting wire, as a result of a temperature difference applied at the ends of the wire. We focus on the linear response regime, corresponding to a small temperature bias. We find that the nonlocal thermoelectric response is strongly dependent on the angle $\theta$ and occurs in ranges which correspond to the emergence of Bogoliubov Fermi points in the energy spectrum of the superconducting wire.

Cooper quartets represent exotic fermion aggregates describing correlated matter at the basis of charge-$4e$ superconductivity and offer a platform for studying four-body interactions, of interest for topologically protected quantum computing, nuclear matter simulations, and more general strongly correlated matter. Focusing on solid-state systems, we show how to quantum design Cooper quartets in a double-dot system coupled to ordinary superconducting leads through the introduction of an attractive interdot interaction. A fundamentally novel, maximally correlated double-dot ground state, in the form of a superposition of vacuum $|0\rangle$ and four-electron state $|4e\rangle$, emerges as a narrow resonance in a many-body quartet correlator that is accompanied by negligible pair correlations and features a rich phenomenology. The system represents an instance of correlated Andreev matter and the results open the way to the exploration of interaction effects in hybrid superconducting devices, and the study of novel correlated states of matter with ingredients available in a quantum solid-state laboratory., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Bipolar thermoelectricity in tunnel junctions between superconductors of different energy gap has been recently predicted and experimentally demonstrated. This effect showed thermovoltages up to $\pm150\;\mu$V at milliKelvin temperatures. Thus, superconducting tunnel junctions can be exploited to realize a passive single-photon thermoelectric detector $TED$ operating in the broadband range 15 GHz - 50 PHz. In particular, this detector is expected to show a signal-to-noise ratio of about 15 down to $\nu=50$ GHz and a operating window of more than 4 decades. We theoretically study the quasiparticle current behaviour of a thermally-biased bipolar thermoelectrical superconducting quantum interference proximity transistor, formed by a normal metal wire embedded in a superconducting ring and tunnel-coupled to a superconducting probe. In this configuration, the superconducting gap of the wire can be modified through an applied magnetic flux. We analyse the thermoelectric response as a function of magnetic flux, at fixed temperatures, in the case of a device made of the same superconductor. We demonstrate magnetically controllable, bipolar thermoelectric behaviour and discuss optimal working conditions by looking at the thermoelectric power and other figures of merit of the device., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We investigate nonequilibrium effects in the transport of interacting electrons in quantum conductors, proposing the nonlocal thermoelectric response as a direct indicator of the presence of interactions, nonthermal states and the effect of correlations. This is done by assuming a quantum Hall setup where two channels (connected to reservoirs at different temperatures) co-propagate for a finite distance, such that a thermoelectrical response is only expected if the electron-electron interaction mediates heat exchange between the channels. This way, the nonlocal Seebeck response measures the interaction strength. Considering zero-range interactions, we solve the charge and energy currents and noises of a non-equilibrium integrable interacting system, determining the universal interaction-dependent length scale of energy equilibration. Thermoelectric effects in normal metals and superconductors are usually very small due to the presence of electron-hole symmetry. Here, we show that superconducting junctions brought out of equilibrium manifest a sizable bipolar thermoelectric effect that stems from a strong violation of the detailed balance. To fully control the effect, we consider a thermally biased SIS'IS junction where the capacitance of the central S' region is small enough to establish a Coulomb blockade regime. By exploiting charging effects we are able to tune the Seebeck voltage, the thermocurrent, and thereby the power output of this structure, via an external gate. Thermoelectrical properties are frequently used to characterize the materials and endow the free energy from wasted heat for useful purposes. Here, we show that linear thermoelectric effects in tunnel junctions with Fe-based superconductors, not only address the dominance between particle and hole states, but even provide information about the superconducting order parameter symmetry. In particular, we observe that nodal order parameters present a maximal thermoelectric effect at lower temperatures than for nodeless cases. Furthermore, we show also that superconducting tunnel junctions between Fe-based and BCS superconductors could provide a thermoelectric efficiency ZT exceeding 6 with a linear Seebeck coefficient around $S\approx 800\;\mu\text{V/K}$ at a few Kelvin. We propose a passive single-photon detector based on the bipolar thermoelectric effect occurring in tunnel junctions between two different superconductors thanks to spontaneous electron-hole symmetry breaking. Our thermoelectric detector (TED) converts a finite temperature difference caused by the absorption of a single photon into an open circuit thermovoltage. Designed with feasible parameters, our TED is able to reveal single-photons of frequency ranging from about 15 GHz to about 150 PHz depending on the chosen design and materials. In particular, this detector is expected to show values of signal-to-noise ratio SNR about 15 at {\nu} = 50 GHz when operated at a temperature of 10 mK. Interestingly, this device can be viewed as a digital single-photon detector, since it generates an almost constant voltage VS for the full operation energies. Our TED can reveal single photons in a frequency range wider than 4 decades with the possibility to discern the energy of the incident photon by measuring the time persistence of the generated thermovoltage. Its broadband operation suggests that our TED could find practical applications in several fields of quantum science and technology, such as quantum computing, telecommunications, optoelectronics, THz spectroscopy and astro-particle physics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Robust and tunable topological Josephson junctions (TJJs) are highly desirable platforms for investigating the anomalous Josephson effect and topological quantum computation applications. Experimental demonstrations have been done in hybrid superconducting-two dimensional topological insulator (2DTI) platforms, sensitive to magnetic disorder and interactions with phonons and other electrons. In this work, we propose a robust and electrostatically tunable TJJ by combining the physics of the integer quantum Hall (IQH) regime and of superconductors. We provide analytical insights about the corresponding Andreev bound state spectrum, the Josephson current and the anomalous current. We demonstrate the existence of protected zero-energy crossings, that can be controlled through electrostatic external gates. This electrostatic tunability has a direct advantage to compensate for non-ideal interfaces and undesirable reflections that may occur in any realistic samples. TJJs in the IQH regime could be realized in graphene and other 2D materials. They are of particular relevance towards scalable and robust Andreev-qubit platforms, and also for efficient phase batteries.

Not so long ago, thermoelectricity in superconductors was believed to be possible only by breaking explicitly the particle-hole symmetry. Recently, it has been theoretically predicted that a superconducting tunnel junction can develop bipolar thermoelectric phenomena in the presence of a large thermal gradient owing to non-equilibrium spontaneous PH symmetry breaking. The experimental realization of the first thermoelectric Josephson engine then followed. Here, we give a more extended discussion and focus on the impact of the Josephson contribution on thermoelectricity modulating the Cooper pairs transport in a double-loop SQUID. When the Cooper pairs current prevails on the quasiparticle one, the Josephson contribution short-circuits the junction thereby screening the thermoelectric effect. We demonstrate that the thermoelectric generation due to the pure quasiparticle transport is phase-independent, once Josephson contribution is appropriately removed from the net current measured. At the same time, we investigate an additional metastable state at V\simeq0 determined by the presence of the Josephson coupling, which peculiarly modifies the hysteretic behavior of our thermoelectric engine realized. At the end, we also discuss how the current-voltage characteristics are affected by the presence of multiple thermoelectric elements, which improve the generated output power., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the thermoelectric properties of a hybrid nanodevice composed by a 2D carbon based material and a superconductor. This system presents nonlinear bipolar thermoelectricity as induced by the spontaneous breaking of the Particle-Hole (PH) symmetry in a tunnel junction between a BiLayer Graphene (BLG) and a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor. In this scheme, the nonlinear thermoelectric effect, predicted and observed in SIS' junctions is not affected by the competitive effect of the Josephson coupling. From a fundamental perspective, the most intriguing feature of this effect is its bipolarity. The capability to open and control the BLG gap guarantees improved thermoelectric performances, that reach up to 1 mV/K regarding the Seebeck coefficient and a power density of 1 nW/$\mu$m$^2$ for temperature gradients of tens of Kelvins. Furthermore, the externally controlled gating can also dope the BLG, which is otherwise intrinsically PH symmetric, giving us the opportunity to investigate the bipolar thermoelectricity even in presence of a controlled suppression of the PH symmetry. The predicted robustness of this system could foster further experimental investigations and applications in the near future, thanks to the available techniques of nano-fabrication.

Thermoelectric effects in metals are typically small due to the nearly-perfect particle-hole (PH) symmetry around their Fermi surface [1, 2]. Despite being initially considered paradoxical [3], thermophase effects [4-8] and linear thermoelectricity [9] in superconducting systems were identified only when PH symmetry is explicitly broken [10-14]. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that a superconducting tunnel junction can develop a very large bipolar thermoelectric effect in the presence of a nonlinear thermal gradient thanks to spontaneous PH symmetry breaking [15]. Our junctions show a maximum thermovoltage of $\pm150\; \mu$ V at $\pm650$ mK, directly proportional to the superconducting gap. Notably, the corresponding Seebeck coefficient of $\pm300\; \mu$V/K is roughly $10^5$ times larger than the one expected for a normal metal at the same temperature [16, 17]. Moreover, by integrating our junctions into a Josephson interferometer, we realize a bipolar thermoelectric Josephson engine (BTJE) [18] with phase-coherent thermopower control [19]. When connected to a generic load, the BTJE generates a phase-tunable electric power up to about 140 mW/m$^2$ at subKelvin temperatures. In addition, our device implements the prototype for a persistent thermoelectric memory cell, written or erased by current injection [20]. We expect that our findings will trigger thermoelectricity in PH symmetric systems, and will lead to a number of groundbreaking applications in superconducting electronics [21], cutting-edge quantum technologies [22-24] and sensing [25]., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures

We theoretically study the behavior of the critical current of a thermally-biased tunnel Josephson junction with a particular design, in which the electrodes of the junction are enclosed in two different superconducting loops pierced by independent magnetic fluxes. In this setup, the superconducting gaps can be modified independently through the magnetic fluxes threading the loops. We investigate the response of the device as a function of the magnetic fluxes, by changing the asymmetry parameter, i.e., the ratio between the zero-temperature superconducting gaps $\delta=\Delta_{10}/\Delta_{20}$, and the temperatures of the two rings. We demonstrate a magnetically controllable step-like response of the critical current, which emerges even in a symmetric junction, $\delta=1$. Finally, we discuss the optimal working conditions and the high response of the critical current to small changes in the magnetic flux, reporting good performances of the transducer, with a high transfer function that depends on the operating point and the quality of the junction., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We discuss the charge and the spin tunneling currents between two Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductors, where one density of states is spin-split. In the presence of a large temperature bias across the junction, we predict the generation of a spin-polarized thermoelectric current. This thermo-spin effect is the result of a spontaneous particle-hole symmetry breaking in the absence of a polarizing tunnel barrier. The two spin components, which move in opposite directions, generate a spin current larger than the purely polarized case when the thermo-active component dominates over the dissipative one.

The thermoelectric performance of a topological Josephson nonlocal heat engine is thoroughly investigated. The nonlocal response is obtained by using a normal metal probe coupled with only one of the proximized helical edges in the middle of the junction. In this configuration, we investigate how the flux bias and the phase bias trigger the nonlocal thermoelectric effects under the application of a thermal difference between the superconducting terminals. Possible experimental nonidealities such as asymmetric proximized superconducting gaps are considered showing how the nonlocal response can be affected. The interplay between Doppler-shift, which tends to close gaps, and Andreev interferometry, which affects particle-hole resonant transport, are clearly identified for different operating regimes. Finally, we discuss the power and the efficiency of the topological thermoelectric engine which reaches maximum power at maximal efficiency for a well coupled normal probe. We find quite high nonlocal Seebeck coefficient of the order of tenths of $\mu$V/K at a few kelvin, a signal that would be clearly detectable also against any spurious local effect even with moderate asymmetry of the gaps.

We study the thermodynamic properties of topological Josephson junctions using a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator-based junction as an example. In particular, we propose that phase-dependent measurements of the heat capacity offer an alternative to Josephson-current measurements to demonstrate key topological features. Even in an equilibrium situation, where the fermion parity is not conserved, the heat capacity exhibits a pronounced double peak in its phase dependence as a signature of the protected zero-energy crossing in the Andreev spectrum. This double-peak feature is robust against changes of the tunneling barrier and thus allows one to distinguish between topological and trivial junctions. At short time scales fermion parity is conserved and the heat capacity is $4\pi$-periodic in the superconducting phase difference. We propose a dispersive setup coupling the Josephson junction to a tank LC circuit to measure the heat capacity of the QSH-based Josephson junction sufficiently fast to detect the $4\pi$-periodicity. Although explicitly calculated for a short QSH-based Josephson junction, our results are also applicable to long as well as nanowire-based topological Josephson junctions., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Josephson junctions in two-dimensional topological insulators with embedded magnetic domains can host a number of topological phases, in particular, Jackiw-Rebbi solitons and Majorana zero modes. These different non-trivial phases appear in such junctions for multiple-domain magnetic islands, showing a rich multi-gap structure. Features related to the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in these systems cannot be easily discerned looking at behavior of the Andreev spectrum and the concomitant dc Josephson effect. Instead, the thermal conductance is very sensitive to the nature of the junction and the domain structure of the magnetic island. We present a detailed analysis of these properties in the case of a topological Josephson junction with a single and two-domain magnetic island. Configurations hosting soliton magnetic modes lead to a peculiar behavior of the thermal conductance relative to the thermal quantum, characterized by a negative slope as a function of the temperature, just above the superconducting critical temperature. At low temperatures, these junctions also show characteristic coherence patters in the behavior of the thermal conductance as function of the Josephson phase bias and the angle between the magnetizations of the domains., Comment: 13 pages with references, 11 figures, second version

We discuss the phase dependent nonlocal thermoelectric effect in a topological Josephson junction in contact with a normal-metal probe. We show that, due to the helical nature of topological edge states, nonlocal thermoelectricity is generated by a purely Andreev interferometric mechanism. This response can be tuned by imposing a Josephson phase difference, through the application of a dissipationless current between the two superconductors, even without the need of applying an external magnetic field. We discuss in detail the origin of this effect and we provide also a realistic estimation of the nonlocal Seebeck coefficient that results of the order of few $\mu V/K$.

The promise of fault-tolerant quantum computing has made topological superconductors the focus of intense research during the past decade. In this context, topological Josephson junctions based on nanowires or on topological insulators provide an alternative route for probing topological superconductivity. As a hallmark of their topological nature, such junctions exhibit a ground-state fermion parity that is $4\pi$-periodic in the superconducting phase difference $\phi$. Finding unambiguous experimental evidence for this $4\pi$-periodicity still proves a difficult task, however. Here we propose a topological Josephson heat engine implemented by a Josephson-Stirling cycle as an alternative thermodynamic approach to test the ground-state parity. Using a Josephson junction based on a quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator, we show how the thermodynamic cycle can be used to test the $4\pi$-periodicity of the topological ground state and to distinguish between parity-conserving and non-parity-conserving engines. Interestingly, we find that parity conservation generally boosts both the efficiency and power of the topological heat engine with respect to its non-topological counterpart. Our results, applicable not only to QSH-based junctions but also to any topological Josephson junction, demonstrate the potential of the intriguing and fruitful marriage between topology and coherent thermodynamics., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the response of an rf-SQUID formed by anomalous Josephson junctions embedded in a superconducting ring with a non-negligible inductance. We demonstrate that a properly sweeping in-plane magnetic field can cause both the total flux and the current circulating in the device to modulate and to behave hysteretically. The bistable response of the system is analyzed as a function of the anomalous phase shift at different values of the screening parameter, in order to highlight the parameter range within which a hysteretic behavior can be observed. The magnetic flux piercing the SQUID ring is demonstrated to further modulate the hysteretical response of the system. Moreover, we show that the anomalous phase shift can be conveniently determined through the measurement of the out-of-plane magnetic field at which the device switches to the voltage state and the number of trapped flux quanta changes. Finally, we compare the response of two different device configurations, namely, a SQUID including only one or two anomalous junctions. We consider a Josephson junction hosting a Kramers pair of helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall bar in contact with a normal-metal probe. In this hybrid system, the orbital phase induced by a small magnetic field threading the junction known as Doppler shift (DS), combines with the conventional Josephson phase difference and originates an effect akin to a Zeeman field in the spectrum. As a consequence, when a temperature bias is applied to the superconducting terminals, a thermoelectric current is established in the normal probe. We argue that this purely non-local thermoelectric effect is a unique signature of the helical nature of the edge states coupled to superconducting leads and it can constitute a useful tool for probing the helical nature of the edge states in systems where the Hall bar configuration is difficult to achieve. We fully characterize thermoelectric response and performance of this hybrid junction in a wide range of parameters, demonstrating that the external magnetic flux inducing the DS can be used as a knob to control the thermoelectric response and the heat flow in a novel device based on topological junctions.

We study the thermodynamic properties of a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junction {in the short limit}. Owing to the proximity effect, such a junction constitutes a thermodynamic system where {phase difference}, supercurrent, temperature and entropy are thermodynamical variables connected by equations of state. These allow conceiving quasi-static processes that we characterize in terms of heat and work exchanged. Finally, we combine such processes to construct a Josephson-based Otto and Stirling cycles. Electronic cooling in hybrid normal metal-insulator-superconductor junctions is a promising technology for the manipulation of thermal loads in solid state nanosystems. One of the main bottlenecks for efficient electronic cooling is the electron-phonon coupling, as it represents a thermal leakage channel to the phonon bath. Graphene is a two-dimensional material that exhibits a weaker electron-phonon coupling compared to standard metals. For this reason, we study the electron cooling in graphene-based systems consisting of a graphene sheet contacted by two insulator/superconductor junctions. We show that, by properly biasing the graphene, its electronic temperature can reach base values lower than those achieved in similar systems based on metallic ultra-thin films. Moreover, the lower electron-phonon coupling is mirrored in a lower heat power pumped into the superconducting leads, thus avoiding their overheating and preserving the cooling mechanisms. Finally, we analyze the possible application of cooled graphene as a bolometric radiation sensor. We study its main figures of merit, i.e. responsivity, noise equivalent power and response time. In particular, we show that the built-in electron refrigeration allows reaching a responsivity of the order of 50 nA/pW and a noise equivalent power of order of $\rm 10^{-18}\, W\, Hz^{-1/2}$ while the response speed is about 10 ns, corresponding to a thermal bandwidth in the order of 20MHz., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We study thermal transport induced by soliton dynamics in a long Josephson tunnel junction operating in the flux-flow regime. A thermal bias across the junction is established by imposing the superconducting electrodes to reside at different temperatures, when solitons flow along the junction. Here, we consider the effect of both a bias current and an external magnetic field on the thermal evolution of the device. In the flux-flow regime, a chain of magnetically-excited solitons rapidly moves along the junction driven by the bias current. We explore the range of bias current triggering the flux-flow regime at fixed values of magnetic field, and the stationary temperature distribution in this operation mode. We evidence a steady multi-peaked temperature profile which reflects on the average soliton distribution along the junction. Finally, we analyse also how the friction affecting the soliton dynamics influences the thermal evolution of the system., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

We suggest a single-photon thermal detector based on the abrupt jump of the critical current of a temperature-biased tunnel Josephson junction formed by different superconductors, working in the dissipationless regime. The electrode with the lower critical temperature is used as radiation sensing element, so it is kept thermally floating and is connected to an antenna. The warming up resulting from the absorption of a photon can induce a drastic measurable enhancement of the critical current of the junction. We propose a detection scheme based on a threshold mechanism for single- or multi-photon detection. This Josephson threshold detector has indeed calorimetric capabilities being able to discriminate the energy of the incident photon. So, for the realistic setup that we discuss, our detector can efficiently work as a calorimeter for photons from the mid infrared, through the optical, into the ultraviolet, specifically, for photons with frequencies in the range $[30-9\times10^4]\;\text{THz}$. In the whole range of detectable frequencies a resolving power significantly larger than one results. In order to reveal the signal, we suggest the fast measurement of the Josephson kinetic inductance. Indeed, the photon-induced change in the critical current affects the Josephson kinetic inductance of the junction, which can be non-invasively read through a LC tank circuit, inductively coupled to the junction. We theoretically explore the behavior of thermal transport in the topological SQUIPT, in the linear and nonlinear regime. The device consists of a topological Josephson junction based on a two-dimensional topological insulator in contact with two superconducting leads, and a probe tunnel coupled to the topological edge states of the junction. We compare the performance of a normal metal and a graphene probe, showing that the topological SQUIPT behaves as a passive thermal rectifier and that it can reach a rectification coefficient of up to $~ 145\%$ with the normal metal probe. Moreover, the interplay between the superconducting leads and the helical edge states leads to a unique behaviour due to a Doppler shift like effect, that allows one to influence quasi-particle transport through the edge channels via the magnetic flux that penetrates the junction. Exploiting this effect, we can greatly enhance the rectification coefficient for temperatures below the critical temperature $T_\text{C}$ in an active rectification scheme., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

In this work we investigate the supercurrent in a hybrid topological Josephson junction consisting of two planes of topological insulator (TI) in a specific configuration, which allows both local (LAR) and crossed (CAR) Andreev processes at the interfaces with two conventional s-wave superconductors. We describe the effects of gate voltage and magnetic flux controls applied to the edge states of each TI. In particular, we demonstrate that the voltage gating allows the manipulation of the entaglement symmetry of non-local Cooper pairs associated to the CAR process. We establish a connection between the Josephson current-phase relationship of the system and the action of the two external fields, finding that they selectively modify the LAR or the CAR contributions. Remarkably, we find that the critical current of the junction takes a very simple form which reflects the change in the symmetry occurred to the entangled state and allows to determine the microscopic parameters of the junction.

In the last 60 years conventional solid and electrolyte gating allowed sizable modulations of the surface carrier concentration in metallic superconductors resulting in tuning their conductivity and changing their critical temperature. Recent conventional gating experiments on superconducting metal nano-structures showed full suppression of the critical current without variations of the normal state resistance and the critical temperature. These results still miss a microscopic explanation. In this article, we show a complete set of gating experiments on Ti-based superconducting Dayem bridges and a suggested classical thermodynamic model which seems to account for several of our experimental findings. In particular, zero-bias resistance and critical current IC measurements highlight the following: the suppression of IC with both polarities of gate voltage, the surface nature of the effect, the critical temperature independence from the electric field and the gate-induced growth of a sub-gap dissipative component. In addition, the temperature dependence of the Josephson critical current seems to show the transition from the ballistic Kulik-Omelyanchuck behavior to the Ambegaokar-Baratoff tunnel-like characteristic by increasing the electric field. Furthermore, the IC suppression persists in the presence of sizeable perpendicular-to-plane magnetic fields. We propose a classical thermodynamic model able to describe some of the experimental observations of the present and previous works. Above all, the model grabs the bipolar electric field induced suppression of IC and the emergence of a sub-gap dissipative component near full suppression of the supercurrent. We theoretically investigate the critical current of a thermally-biased SIS Josephson junction formed by electrodes made by different BCS superconductors. The response of the device is analyzed as a function of the asymmetry parameter, $r=T_{c_1} /T_{c_2}$. We highlight the appearance of jumps in the critical current of an asymmetric junction, namely, when $r\neq1$. In fact, in such case at temperatures at which the BCS superconducting gaps coincide, the critical current suddenly increases or decreases. In particular, we thoroughly discuss the counterintuitively behaviour of the critical current, which increases by enhancing the temperature of one lead, instead of monotonically reducing. In this case, we found that the largest jump of the critical current is obtained for moderate asymmetries, $r\simeq3$. In view of these results, the discussed behavior can be speculatively proposed as a temperature-based threshold single-photon detector with photon-counting capabilities, which operates non-linearly in the non-dissipative channel., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the nonlocal thermoelectric transport in a Cooper-pair splitter based on a double-quantum-dot-superconductor three-terminal hybrid structure. We find that the nonlocal coupling between the superconductor and the quantum dots gives rise to nonlocal thermoelectric effects which originate from the nonlocal particle-hole breaking of the system. We show that Cooper-pair splitting induces the generation of a thermo-current in the superconducting lead without any transfer of charge between the two normal metal leads. Conversely, we show that a nonlocal heat exchange between the normal leads is mediated by non-local Andreev reflection. We discuss the influence of finite Coulomb interaction and study under which conditions nonlocal power generation becomes possible, and when the Cooper-pair splitter can be employed as a cooling device., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

A superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junction is a coherent electron system where the thermodynamic entropy depends on temperature and phase difference across the weak-link. Here, exploiting the phase-temperature thermodynamic diagram of a thermally isolated system, we argue that a cooling effect can be achieved when the phase drop across the junction is brought from 0 to $\pi$ in a iso-entropic process. We show that iso-entropic cooling can be enhanced with proper choice of geometrical and electrical parameters of the junction, i.e. by increasing the ratio between supercurrent and total junction volume. We present extensive numerical calculations using quasi-classical Green function methods for a short junction and we compare them with analytical results. Interestingly, we demonstrate that phase-coherent thermodynamic cycles can be implemented by combining iso-entropic and iso-phasic processes acting on the weak-link, thereby engineering the coherent version of thermal machines such as engines and cooling systems. We investigate the coherent energy and thermal transport in a temperature-biased long Josephson tunnel junction, when a Josephson vortex, i.e., a soliton, steadily drifts driven by an electric bias current. We demonstrate that thermal transport through the junction can be controlled by the bias current, since it determines the steady-state velocity of the drifting soliton. We study the effects on thermal transport of the damping affecting the soliton dynamics. In fact, a soliton locally influences the power flowing through the junction and can cause the variation of the temperature of the device. When the soliton speed increases approaching its limiting value, i.e., the Swihart velocity, we demonstrate that the soliton-induces thermal effects significantly modify. Finally, we discuss how the appropriate material selection of the superconductors forming the junction is essential, since short quasiparticle relaxation times are required to observe fast thermal effects., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

The classification of topological states of matter in terms of unitary symmetries and dimensionality predicts the existence of nontrivial topological states even in zero-dimensional systems, i.e., a system with a discrete energy spectrum. Here, we show that a quantum dot coupled with two superconducting leads can realize a nontrivial zero-dimensional topological superconductor with broken time-reversal symmetry, which corresponds to the finite size limit of the one-dimensional topological superconductor. Topological phase transitions corresponds to a change of the fermion parity, and to the presence of zero-energy modes and discontinuities in the current-phase relation at zero temperature. Since its recent foundation, phase-coherent caloritronics has sparkled continuous interest giving rise to numerous concrete applications. This research field deals with the coherent manipulation of heat currents in mesoscopic superconducting devices by mastering the Josephson phase difference. Here, we introduce a new generation of devices for fast caloritronics able to control local heat power and temperature through manipulation of Josephson vortices, i.e., solitons. Although most salient features concerning Josephson vortices in long Josephson junctions were comprehensively hitherto explored, little is known about soliton-sustained coherent thermal transport. We demonstrate that the soliton configuration determines the temperature profile in the junction, so that, in correspondence of each magnetically induced soliton, both the flowing thermal power and the temperature significantly enhance. Finally, we thoroughly discuss a fast solitonic Josephson heat oscillator, whose frequency is in tune with the oscillation frequency of the magnetic drive. We explore the coherent thermal transport sustained by solitons through a long Josephson junction, as a thermal gradient across the system is established. We observe that a soliton causes the heat current through the system to increase. Correspondingly, the junction warms up in correspondence of the soliton, with temperature peaks up to, e.g., approximately 56 mK for a realistic Nb-based proposed setup at a bath temperature Tbath = 4.2 K. The thermal effects on the dynamics of the soliton are also discussed. Markedly, this system inherits the topological robustness of the solitons. In view of these results, the proposed device can effectively find an application as a superconducting thermal router in which the thermal transport can be locally mastered through solitonic excitations, which positions can be externally controlled through a magnetic field and a bias current., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We propose a superconducting thermal memory device that exploits the thermal hysteresis in a flux-controlled, temperature-biased superconducting quantum-interference device (SQUID). This system reveals a flux-controllable temperature bistability, which can be used to define two well-distinguishable thermal logic states. We discuss a suitable writing-reading procedure for these memory states. The time of the memory writing operation is expected to be on the order of ~0.2 ns, for a Nb-based SQUID in thermal contact with a phonon bath at 4:2 K. We suggest a non-invasive readout scheme for the memory states based on the measurement of the effective resonance frequency of a tank circuit inductively coupled to the SQUID. The proposed device paves the way for a practical implementation of thermal logic and computation. The control of nonlocal entanglement in solid state systems is a crucial ingredient of quantum technologies. We investigate a Cooper-pair splitter based on a double quantum dot realised in a semiconducting nanowire. In the presence of interdot tunnelling the system provides a simple mechanism to develop spatial entanglement even in absence of nonlocal coupling with the superconducting lead. We discuss the possibility to control the symmetry (singlet or triplet) of spatially separated, entangled electron pairs taking advantage of the spin-orbit coupling of the nanowire. We consider the sub-gap physics of a hybrid double-quantum dot Cooper-pair splitter with large single-level spacings, in the presence of tunnelling between the dots and finite Coulomb intra- and inter-dot Coulomb repulsion. In the limit of a large superconducting gap, we treat the coupling of the dots to the superconductor exactly. We employ a generalized master-equation method which easily yields currents, noise and cross-correlators. In particular, for finite inter- and intra-dot Coulomb interaction, we investigate how the transport properties are determined by the interplay between local and nonlocal tunneling processes between the superconductor and the dots. We examine the effect of inter-dot tunneling on the particle-hole symmetry of the currents with and without spin-orbit interaction. We show that spin-orbit interaction in combination with finite Coulomb energy opens the possibility to control the nonlocal entanglement and its symmetry (singlet/triplet). We demonstrate that the generation of nonlocal entanglement can be achieved even without any direct nonlocal coupling to the superconducting lead., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We consider a two level system coupled to a thermal bath and we investigate the variation of energy transferred to the reservoir as a function of time. Topological superconductors differ from topologically trivial ones for the presence of topologically protected zero-energy modes. To date, experimental evidence of topological superconductivity in nanostructures has been mainly obtained by measuring the zero-bias conductance peak via tunneling spectroscopy. Here, we propose an alternative and complementary experimental recipe to detect topological phase transitions in these systems. We show in fact that, for a finite-sized system with broken time-reversal symmetry, discontinuities in the Josephson current-phase relation correspond to the presence of zero-energy modes and to a change in the fermion parity of the groundstate. Such discontinuities can be experimentally revealed by a characteristic temperature dependence of the current, and can be related to a finite anomalous current at zero phase in systems with broken phase-inversion symmetry., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Inspired by a recently conjectured universal bound for thermo-electric diffusion constants in quantum critical, strongly coupled systems and relying on holographic analytical computations, we investigate the possibility of formulating Planckian bounds in different holographic models featuring momentum dissipation. For a simple massive gravity dilaton model at zero charge density we find robust linear in temperature resistivity and entropy density alongside a constant electric susceptibility. We study the consequences of the presence of a boundary in topological field theories in various dimensions. We characterize, univocally and on very general grounds, the field content and the symmetries of the actions which live on the boundary. We then show that these actions are covariant, despite appearances. We analyze the backscattering current induced by a time dependent constriction as a tool to probe fractional topological insulators. We demonstrate an enhancement of the total current for a fractional topological insulator induced by the dominant tunneling excitation, contrary to the decreasing present in the integer case for not too strong interactions. This feature allows to unambiguously identify fractional quasiparticles. We present a systematic definition and analysis of the thermo-electric linear response in gauge/gravity systems focusing especially on models with massive gravity in the bulk and therefore momentum dissipation in the dual field theory. We consider a free topological model in 5D euclidean flat spacetime, built from two rank-2 tensor fields. Despite the fact that the bulk of the model does not have any particular physical interpretation, on its 4D planar edge nontrivial gauge field theories are recovered, whose features are entirely determined by the gauge and discrete symmetries of the bulk. In particular no 4D dynamics can be obtained without imposing a Time Reversal invariance in the bulk. Remarkably, one of the two possible edge models selected by the Time Reversal symmetries displays a true electromagnetic duality, which relates strong and weak coupling regimes.
