Abstract

Introduction: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is a rare cause of myocardial infarction. Patients suffering SCAD are often young women without typical risk factors for atherosclerotic heart disease. Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for SCAD.Case series: We report three cases of patients with SCAD from a single physician in a six-month period. Each case is unique and highlights the varied presentations and epidemiological risk factors associated with this condition.Discussion: We believe these cases are unique in that they provide insights into the variable presentations and conditions frequently associated with SCAD and will help clinicians maintain a high index of suspicion for this difficult to diagnose and rare cause of type 2 myocardial infarction. We discuss differences in interventional techniques and medical management.

6. 'I Get It Now!': An Exercise to Highlight Unearned Privilege Using Resource Allocation and Rewards

Abstract

Individuals who are privileged are often unaware of the unearned advantages that they have. Because of this lack of awareness, individuals with privilege may attribute poor performance of a non-privileged individual to that individual's lack of effort or ability, rather than recognizing that the non-privileged person may not have had sufficient opportunities or resources. Without fully being aware of such privilege, it can be difficult for students to appreciate the diversity surrounding them, both in the classroom and in the workplace. This experiential exercise and suggested debrief strategies illustrate the concept and consequences of privilege.

Abstract

The unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) differential cross sections in $^3$He($e,e^{\prime}\pi^{\pm}$)$X$ have been measured for the first time in Jefferson Lab experiment E06-010 performed with a $5.9\,$GeV $e^-$ beam on a $^3$He target. The experiment focuses on the valence quark region, covering a kinematic range $0.12 < x_{bj} < 0.45$, $1 < Q^2 < 4 \, \textrm{(GeV/c)}^2$, $0.45 < z_{h} < 0.65$, and $0.05 < P_t < 0.55 \, \textrm{GeV/c}$. The extracted SIDIS differential cross sections of $\pi^{\pm}$ production are compared with existing phenomenological models while the $^3$He nucleus approximated as two protons and one neutron in a plane wave picture, in multi-dimensional bins. Within the experimental uncertainties, the azimuthal modulations of the cross sections are found to be consistent with zero.

Abstract

We report the measurement of beam-target double-spin asymmetries ($A_\text{LT}$) in the inclusive production of identified hadrons, $\vec{e}~$+$~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X$, using a longitudinally polarized 5.9 GeV electron beam and a transversely polarized $^3\rm{He}$ target. Hadrons ($\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$ and proton) were detected at 16$^{\circ}$ with an average momentum $<$$P_h$$>$=2.35 GeV/c and a transverse momentum ($p_{T}$) coverage from 0.60 to 0.68 GeV/c. Asymmetries from the $^3\text{He}$ target were observed to be non-zero for $\pi^{\pm}$ production when the target was polarized transversely in the horizontal plane. Abstract

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries of charged kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a transversely polarized $^3{\rm{He}}$ target. Both the Collins and Sivers moments, which are related to the nucleon transversity and Sivers distributions, respectively, are extracted over the kinematic range of 0.1$<$$x_{bj}$$<$0.4 for $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ production. While the Collins and Sivers moments for $K^{+}$ are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties, both moments for $K^{-}$ favor negative values. The Sivers moments are compared to the theoretical prediction from a phenomenological fit to the world data. While the $K^{+}$ Sivers moments are consistent with the prediction, the $K^{-}$ results differ from the prediction at the 2-sigma level., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We report the first measurement of target single-spin asymmetries (A$_N$) in the inclusive hadron production reaction, $e~$+$~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X$, using a transversely polarized $^3$He target. The experiment was conducted at Jefferson Lab in Hall A using a 5.9-GeV electron beam. Three types of hadrons ($\pi^{\pm}$, $\text{K}^{\pm}$ and proton) were detected in the transverse hadron momentum range 0.54 $

Abstract

We report the first measurement of the target-normal single-spin asymmetry in deep-inelastic scattering from the inclusive reaction $^3$He$^{\uparrow}\left(e,e' \right)X$ on a polarized $^3$He gas target. Assuming time-reversal invariance, this asymmetry is strictly zero in the Born approximation but can be non-zero if two-photon-exchange contributions are included. The experiment, conducted at Jefferson Lab using a 5.89 GeV electron beam, covers a range of $1.7 < W < 2.9$ GeV, $1.02$ GeV, which is non-zero at the $2.89\sigma$ level. Our measured asymmetry agrees both in sign and magnitude with a two-photon-exchange model prediction that uses input from the Sivers transverse momentum distribution obtained from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering., Comment: This is the final edited version as published in PRL

14. Reconsidering the Instructional Design and Technology Timeline through a Lens of Social Justice

Abstract

A combined timeline project of major events in the field of instructional design and technology (IDT) and concurrent events in the broader social context was engaged as part of an effort to understand why social justice issues seem to be perceived as irrelevant to and disconnected from professional work in IDT. A brief review of IDT is presented, including an example reinforcing tendencies toward mechanistic thinking, and key moments when the field shifted in response to attention being called to areas previously neglected. Several interesting juxtapositions found in the combined timeline are then presented. Our lack of critical attention to the social, historical, and cultural contexts in which our field has developed and continues to evolve contributes to perpetuation of a culture of ignorance regarding systemic injustice and related issues, which therefore may be overlooked and reinforced in our work. This tendency will continue unless we make a needed shift to the field.

15. The Effect of Web-Based Question Prompts on Scaffolding Knowledge Integration and Ill-Structured Problem Solving

Abstract

This study examined the effects of question prompts, knowledge integration prompts, and problem solving prompts, embedded in a Web-based learning environment in scaffolding preservice teachers' conceptual understanding and problem solving in an ill-structured domain. A mixed-method study was employed to investigate the outcomes of students' conceptual knowledge and ill-structured problem solving. The quantitative results indicated that students who received knowledge integration prompts had significantly higher scores in overall problem solving performance, but the same was not true for prompts focused on conceptual knowledge. Further, the qualitative findings revealed the positive effects of knowledge integration prompts in facilitating students to make intentional efforts to identify and explain major concepts and their relationships that are necessary for solving the ill-structured problem. This study has implications for designing curricula in ill-defined domains that seek to integrate and promote the application of educational principles to real-world problems. (Contains 2 tables.)

20. Measuring the Learning Cost of Presentation Interference.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of presentation interference on students' ability to learn from, and their beliefs regarding, computer-generated presentations. Informed by single-element screen design studies and professional practice, this combined-element study compared a contextually based, intentionally interference free presentation against two presentations containing multiple, typical design flaws. Undergraduate students (n=118) were randomly assigned to three groups, and subjects individually viewed one of the three treatments. Following the presentation, subjects completed a post test and a belief questionnaire. Three hypotheses were tested: (1) subjects receiving presentations with no intentional presentation interference would perform better on the post test; (2) subjects receiving presentations with less interference would perform better than those receiving presentations with more interference; and (3) subjects in the interference-free presentation group would report more positive beliefs regarding computer generated presentations than would subjects receiving presentations with interference. Results indicated significantly higher posttest scores for the interference free presentation group. It was concluded that, although the well designed presentation and a presentation containing intentional interference both resulted in strong beliefs regarding the beneficial nature of computer generated presentations, treatments containing presentation interference significantly reduced learning. 27. Project-Based Learning in an Internship Program: A Qualitative Study of Related Roles and Their Motivational Attributes

Abstract

The roles of task, learner, and mentor in a successful project-based instructional technology (IT) internship program were studied in light of contemporary motivation theories. Interns in four different locations were asked to apply their academic experiences in constructing real projects at work under the supervision of their site mentors and academic advisor. Data included tape-recorded intern interviews, status-review notes, e-portfolios, mentor interviews, and mentor evaluations. Data were collected over 6 semesters, from 18 different cases, 4 of which are highlighted here. The study considered the roles of task, learner, and mentors as they are needed to make the most of project-based internship programs. Implications for the design and development of internship and capstone programs, and specifically successful student performance in internship programs, are considered.

28. Effects of an Online Visual Procedure on Task Completion, Time, and Attitude

Abstract

Although substantial literature exists regarding learning with visuals, most consider text the primary channel with varying amounts of visuals explored as a secondary channel. This study considered the effectiveness of visuals-only procedural guides versus visuals plus added text, using visuals as the primary channel and using visuals developed from screen shots to eliminate the need to create a visual, stand-in vocabulary. There was no difference in the level of successful task completion between treatment groups. The time required to complete the task was measured and there were significant differences in the amount of time required by treatment group, age, and sex. Both treatment groups responded favorably to the procedures on a follow-up attitude questionnaire. Implications of the study and suggestions for further research are discussed. Additional file 1: Supplemental Figure S1. PDIA3���/��� reduces cellular growth rate in immortalized hCMEC/d3 human endothelial brain cells. A) We tested whether PDIA3���/��� changed cell replication in CMECs. Counts were performed from brightfield images taken at 24 h intervals (100x magnification). Fields were overlaid with a 225 x 225 ��m grid and a total area of 0.4 mm2 was counted per field over a total of 3 random fields per well, each field covered 1.47 mm2. Cell counts were normalized to cell numbers at 24 h after plating to account for slight differences in plating and cells that did not adhere. B) PDIA3���/��� and WT cells grew at the same rate over the initial 24���48 h for both genotypes. For WT cells, cell growth continued to increase at 24 h until the cells reached confluence. On the other hand slowed PDIA3���/��� growth rate slowed. C) We ruled out that cell death was increased in PDIA3���/��� which might account for differences in cell number. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), released upon cell membrane damage, was not different between WT and PDIA3���/��� cells between 48���72 h, a period which showed differing growth rates between the two genotypes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is expected to have a growing role in medical diagnostic interpretation and existing programs should be challenged with difficult cases in clinical practice senerios. An isolated posterior myocardial infarction (MI) is suggested by ST segment depression in the anteroseptal leads on a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and confirmed by the presence of 0.5mm ST segment elevation in any of the posterior leads (V7-V9). Isolated posterior MI is rare (potentially <4 % of all MIs).
