The Dorabella cipher is a symbolic message written in 1897 by English composer Edward Elgar. We analyze the cipher using modern computational and statistical techniques. We consider several open questions: Is the underlying message natural language text or music? If it is language, what is the most likely language? Is Dorabella a simple substitution cipher? If so, why has nobody managed to produce a plausible decipherment? Are some unusual-looking patterns in the cipher likely to occur by chance? Can stateof-the-art algorithmic solvers decipher at least some words of the message? This work is intended as a contribution towards finding answers to these questions.

Acquisition of multilingual training data continues to be a challenge in word sense disambiguation (WSD). To address this problem, unsupervised approaches have been proposed to automatically generate sense annotations for training supervised WSD systems. We present three new methods for creating sense-annotated corpora which leverage translations, parallel bitexts, lexical resources, as well as contextual and synset embeddings. Our semi-supervised method applies machine translation to transfer existing sense annotations to other languages. Our two unsupervised methods refine sense annotations produced by a knowledge-based WSD system via lexical translations in a parallel corpus. We describe the University of Alberta systems for the SemEval-2021 Word-in-Context (WiC) disambiguation task. We explore the use of translation information for deciding whether two different tokens of the same word correspond to the same sense of the word. Our focus is on developing principled theoretical approaches which are grounded in linguistic phenomena, leading to more explainable models. We show that translations from multiple languages can be leveraged to improve the accuracy on the WiC task.

We investigate the hypothesis that translations can be used to identify cross-lingual lexical entailment. We propose novel methods that leverage parallel corpora, word embeddings, and multilingual lexical resources. Our results demonstrate that the implementation of these ideas leads to improvements in predicting entailment.

The study of homonymy is vital to resolving fundamental problems in lexical semantics. In this paper, we propose four hypotheses that characterize the unique behavior of homonyms in the context of translations, discourses, collocations, and sense clusters. We present a new annotated homonym resource that allows us to test our hypotheses on existing WSD resources. The results of the experiments provide strong empirical evidence for the hypotheses. Dynamical backaction has proven to be a versatile tool in cavity optomechanics, allowing for precise manipulation of a mechanical resonator's motion using confined optical photons. In this work, we present measurements of a silicon whispering-gallery-mode optomechanical cavity where backaction originates from opposing radiation pressure and photothermal forces, with the former dictating the optomechanical spring effect and the latter governing the optomechanical damping. At high enough optical input powers, we show that the photothermal force drives the mechanical resonator into self-oscillations for a pump beam detuned to the lower-frequency side of the optical resonance, contrary to what one would expect for a radiation-pressure-dominated optomechanical device. Using a fully nonlinear model, we fit the hysteretic response of the optomechanical cavity to extract its properties, demonstrating that this non-sideband-resolved device exists in a regime where photothermal damping could be used to cool its motion to the quantum ground state., 21 pages, 16 figures, 1 table, submitted version

A transducer capable of converting quantum information stored as microwaves into telecom-wavelength signals is a critical piece of future quantum technology as it promises to enable the networking of quantum processors. Cavity optomechanical devices that are simultaneously coupled to microwave fields and optical resonances are being pursued in this regard. Yet even in the classical regime, developing optical modulators based on cavity optomechanics could provide lower power or higher bandwidth alternatives to current technology. Here we demonstrate a magnetically-mediated wavelength conversion technique, based on mixing high frequency tones with an optomechanical torsional resonator. This process can act either as an optical phase or amplitude modulator depending on the experimental configuration, and the carrier modulation is always coherent with the input tone. Such coherence allows classical information transduction and transmission via the technique of phase-shift keying. We demonstrate that we can encode up to eight bins of information, corresponding to three bits, simultaneously and demonstrate the transmission of an 52,500 pixel image over 6 km of optical fiber with just 0.67% error. Furthermore, we show that magneto-optomechanical transduction can be described in a fully quantum manner, implying that this is a viable approach to signal transduction at the single quantum level., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures
