Research has been conducted on the pyridoneimines and pyridonemethides. The preparation and characterization of these compounds have been carried out in in investigating the possibility to finely tune pi-electron structure properties via examining the substituent and solvent effects, and the use of the multinuclear NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy is described.

Abstract

The characterization of two new purinyl derivatives, 8-benzyl-7methylpurine and bis(7-methylpurin-8-y)methane, was performed and their corresponding carbanions examined in DMSO. The C NMR spectrum reveals the presence of the carbanions of both purinyl derivatives as a mixture of geometric isomers, a conseqence of the high double-bond character along the bond linking the carbanionic carbon to C(8) of the purinyl ring. Results indicate that bis(7-methylpurin-8-yl)methane reacts with metal acetates to produce neutral methanates.

Abstract

A detailed NMR investigation of alpha-heterosubstituted chloroethyllithiums in tetrahydrocortisol was conducted. The generation and NMR study results of (2-(alpha-chloroethyl)benzothiazolyl)lithium and (4,4-dimethyl-2-(alpha-chloroethyl)oxazolinyl)lithium are described. Semiempirical calculations were also included to complement and support the NMR results.

Abstract

The synthesis and characterization of enamines and enol ethers substituted in the beta position by 2-benzoxazolyl and 2-benzothiazolyl are described. The scheme involves the condensation reactions of dimethylformamide dimethyl acetal and ethyl orthoformate, respectively, with bis(2-benzoxalyl)methane and bis(2-benzothiazolyl)methane. The electron-withdrawing capacity of the heterocyclic rings has been determined by dynamic NMR and semiempirical (PM3) analyses of rotational energy barriers.

Abstract

The electron-withdrawing power of heterocycles as a function of charged demands has been determined. The pi-charge/shift relationships have been applied to 13C and 15N shifts of the carbanions of 2-benzylazoles, their benzo-fused analogs and bis(2-azolyl)methanes. The results showed the charge demands at thiazole > oxazole > imidazole. The benzoazoles are also more efficient than monocycles in delocalizing the negative charge.

Abstract

Isotopic carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the sodium salts of 4-picolyl carbanion derivatives was carried out to determine the negative charge distribution between the pyridyl ring and the substituent. The rotation about the double bond between carbon 4 and the anionic carbon was also analyzed carefully in the derivatives studied. Results indicate that charge partitioning is defined by the substituent's charge demand which is the fraction of the pi resonance shifted to it.

Abstract

The charge demand or the fraction of the pi resonance shifted to a substituent group was assessed in acetonitriles and phenylacetonitriles carbanions through isotopic carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Results reveal that the cyano group in these carbanions has weak charge demand. Possible mechanisms for the observed increased acidity of cyanocarbon acids are discussed because the results do not apply to alpha-cyano carbanions.

Abstract

The design criteria, synthesis, and complete characterization of several pyrrole-containing, highly conjugated squaraines as second-generation photosensitizers are described. The dark and toxicity and cellular uptake capabilities of water-soluble squaraine photosensitizers could find potential application in clinical small animal photodynamic therapy (PDT) trials.
