Many unique high‐altitude mountain ecosystems have been declining due to climate change, posing a threat to flora and fauna that have adapted to these ecosystems. This study explores the evolution of high‐altitude adaptations, focusing on female flightlessness and diel activity, in geometrid moths (Lepidoptera: Ennominae, Gnophini) within the European Alps. We constructed a phylogeny of Gnophini moths using a dataset of 157 taxa, with up to seven genetic markers and traced the evolutionary history of diel activity and wing length reduction in females. Analysis of divergence times suggested that female flightlessness has evolved at least three times independently between the early and late Miocene. The evolution of wing length reduction is likely correlated with elevation, indicating adaptations to cold and windy conditions in high altitude. The evolutionary events leading to shifts in adult diel activity, from ancestral nocturnality to diurnality, have occurred independently at least three times and may also be a consequence of adaptations at high elevations. Strikingly, among diurnal Sciadia, two species have evolved further to become nocturnal like their ancestors. Our findings highlight how phylogenies can provide new insights into evolutionary patterns in moths. We provided a robust basis for resolving taxonomic ambiguities in Alpine Gnophini, leading us to propose 10 changes to the current classification: Scrupodes Lee & Sihvonen gen. n., Elophos Boisduval (type species Geometra operaria Hübner) is considered a junior synonym of Sciadia Hübner syn. n., Yezognophos dilucidaria (Denis & Schiffermüller) and Y. sproengertsi (Püngeler) are transferred to Parietaria Leraut comb. n., Yezognophos serotinaria (Denis & Schiffermüller) is transferred to Scrupeus Lee & Sihvonen comb. n., Elophos caelibaria (Heydenreich), E. zirbitzensis (Pieszcek), E. operaria (Hübner) and E. andereggaria (De La Harpe) are transferred to Sciadia Hübner comb. n. and Dichrognophos Wehrli (type species Gnophos orthogonia Wehrli) is transferred from Ennominae: Cassymini to Ennominae: Gnophini. Surveys in the arid shrubland of the central Andes revealed larval polyphagy for Cataspilates marceloi Vargas, 2022 (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Ennominae, Boarmiini), a geometrid moth with flightless females. This discovery suggests that, as well as in the Holarctic fauna, larval polyphagy would have been important for the evolution of flightlessness among Neotropical geometrid moths of the tribe Boarmiini. Insects are one of the few groups of animals that developed the ability of active flight. Such mobility allowed the group to successfully explore and thrive in nearly all kinds of ecological niches. At the same time, during the evolutionary history of insects, due to high costs of wing development, flight was lost independently in many groups. In beetles, the reduction or complete loss of hind wings has been reported in multiple lineages, especially in several extreme paedomorphic and larviform females, mainly in Elateroidea, in which not only the hind wings but also the elytra are lost. However, the complete absence of elytra in adult males was hitherto unknown, despite nearly half a million described species in Coleoptera. In this study, we report the discovery of Xenomorphon baranowskii gen. et sp. nov. the first completely anelytrous and wingless adult male beetle, belonging to the family Lycidae (Coleoptera: Elateroidea). Xenomorphon baranowskii is illustrated, described, and provisionally placed in Calopterini, based on our morphology-based phylogenetic analyses. The Onthophagus pexatus species-group is revised, with the known species—O. longipes Paulian, 1937; O. nammuldi Matthews, 1972; O. pexatus Harold, 1869; O. squalidus Lea, 1923—redescribed and a new species: O. bulga sp. nov., described. This species-group is centred in New South Wales, where both O. bulga and O. nammuldi are endemic. Onthophagus bulga is only the second flightless species of this large genus known from Australia.

A new species, Psammoecus lordhowensis sp. nov., is described from Lord Howe Island, Australia. The new species is brachypterous and most likely endemic to the island. This species is distinct and can be distinguished by the following morphological characters: body rounded and convex; eyes small; temples well developed; lateral pronotal teeth absent; and hind wing strongly reduced. Megacraspedus peslieri was described from the Pyrenees in 2018 and subsequently also discovered at a few localities in the northern Cottian Alps (Italy). The hitherto unknown female was collected in these localities after a targeted search. As with some other representatives of the genus, the female is flightless and shows a strikingly strong reduction of the wings (brachyptery). Whereas the forewings are significantly shortened and narrowed, the hindwings are strongly reduced. Both the external morphology and the genitalia of the female are described and illustrated in detail, together with previously unpublished photographs of live adults of both sexes. The first data about Sphaeroceridae occurring on eight montane and foothill peat bogs of various types in the North Caucasus (Russia) are presented. A total of 38 species has been recorded and their affinity to peat-bog habitats is discussed. A single species is classified as a tyrphobiont, viz. the strongly brachypterous Pullimosina (Pullimosina) turfosa sp. nov. being strictly associated with Sphagnum hummocks in peat bogs. This new species is described and illustrated in detail and its relationships, biology, and wing reduction are discussed. Only three species are considered tyrphophilous or probably tyrphophilous, viz. Ischiolepta nitida (Duda, 1920), Phthitia (Kimosina) longisetosa (Dahl, 1909), and Spelobia ibrida Roháček, 1983. The majority of recorded species do not have close affinity to peat bogs and are treated as tyrphoneutral, and Rachispoda hostica (Villeneuve, 1917) is probably tyrphoxenous due to occasional occurrence in a peat bog. Species composition of Sphaeroceridae on Caucasian peat bogs is discussed in comparison to those known from peat bogs in other parts of Europe. Taxonomic notes are given on Minilimosina (Svarciella) species of the M. vitripennis group. Six species (including P. turfosa sp. nov.) are new additions to the fauna of Russia. Chakra Rajmohana and Veenakumari is represented by two species – C. sarvatra Rajmohana and Veenakumari and C. pachmarhica (Sharma) – in India. Twelve new species are being added to the Indian fauna of Chakra – C. agathachristieae sp. nov., C. alexandra sp. nov., C. bournei sp. nov., C. galathea sp. nov., C. gotamiae sp. nov., C. juturna sp. nov., C. kambani sp. nov., C. parviocula sp. nov., C. pillaiyar sp. nov., C. sanghamittae sp. nov., C. valluvari sp. nov. and C. zvelebili sp. nov. – and Chakra pachmarhica (Sharma) is redescribed. A new brachypterous form of Alloxysta fracticornis (Thomson, 1862) has been found in the Museum of Natural History of Wroclaw University (Poland). This is the first time that this morphological variation has been recorded for A. fracticornis. The morphological features of this new form match with this species, except for the wing length, which is characteristic of the brachypterous form, and the colour. COI sequences and phylogenetic analysis for the specimens studied (macropterous and brachypterous) confirm that the two morphologies belong to the same species, as we suspected a priori. Thus, in this study we show evidence of morphological variation in A. fracticornis, and demonstrate the value of studying entomological collections as well as new material to improve the taxonomic knowledge of this subfamily. A fairyfly (Hymenoptera, Mymaridae) Cleruchus breviclava Triapitsyn & Coray, sp. nov. is described and illustrated. The new species is an egg parasitoid of the invasive Cis chinensis Lawrence (Coleoptera, Ciidae) in Antrodia xantha fungus (Polyporales, Fomitopsidaceae) in Basel, Switzerland; it is also known from low mountains in Germany and Switzerland. Supporting data on the "barcoding" region of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, as well as separate regions of nuclear ribosomal RNA, the D2 region of 28S and the internal transcribed spacer 2, provide strong evidence of conspecificity of the morphologically variable macropterous and strongly brachypterous individuals of C. breviclava. Macropterous females of the new species are most similar to those of C. detritus Bakkendorf, also known from Switzerland. New records are provided for some other species of Cleruchus Enock in Europe. In the southeast of European Russia, the gall wasp Aulacidea hieracii (Bouché, 1834) is attacked by ten parasitoid species, including Eupelmus (Eupelmus) microzonus Förster, 1860 and E. (Macroneura) messene Walker, 1839. Although both members of the genus Eupelmus Dalman, 1820 are idiobiont ectoparasitoids, they demonstrate different life-history strategies in respect to many bionomic features. Specifically, E. messene is represented by brachypterous thelytokous females which lay single eggs directly onto the host body. This species can parasitize both concealed and exposed larvae and pupae of A. hieracii, but fails to attack its primary parasitoids. On the contrary, arrhenotokous males and females of E. microzonus are fully winged. These parasitoids usually lay several eggs per host which are placed onto the wall of the host chamber and covered with a particular fibrous substance. E. microzonus never parasitizes pupae or exposed larvae, although it can readily attack concealed larvae of A. hieracii and its primary parasitoids. In addition, hibernating individuals of E. messene undergo obligatory larval diapause, but those of E. microzonus are able to develop without exposure to subzero temperatures. All these data collectively suggest that the former species is highly specialized to exploit A. hieracii as a host, whereas the latter one mostly exhibits the socalled morphotypical specialization. These different strategies allow E. messene and E. microzonus to coexist on the same host species, as a local specialist and a more or less evenly distributed generalist, respectively. Five Hawaiian species of Paratachys Casey are revised, including four newly described: Paratachys terryli from Kauai; P. perkinsi from Moloka'i; P. haleakalae from Maui; and P. aaa from Hawai'i Island. A lectotype is designated for the fifth Hawaiian species currently combined with Paratachys, Tachys arcanicola Blackburn, 1878 of Oahu. Hawaiian Paratachys spp. known from more than one specimen exhibit some degree of ocular polymorphism, that variation being extreme in P. terryli where individuals range in ocular development from macrophthalmic with broadly convex eyes to microphthalmic with small, flat eyes. All Hawaiian Paratachys species comprise individuals with vestigial wings, with the exception of P. terryli, where a single macropterous, macrophthalmic female complements the other 18 brachypterous specimens. Based on a transformation series of characters from the male aedeagus, the biogeographic history of Hawaiian Paratachys is consistent with progressive colonization of the Hawaiian Island chain. Three of the species do not appear to represent species of conservation concern, with P. terryli and P. haleakalae known from terrestrial deep soil, litter, and streamside microhabitats in montane wet rain forest, and the troglobitic P. aaa occupying the dark zone of numerous, recently developed lava tube caves within the Mauna Loa and Kilauea volcanic massifs. The conservation status of the other two species is much more dire, with P. arcanicola of O'ahu not seen in nature since the early 20th Century, and P. perkinsi known only from a single specimen fortuitously collected in 1894 near sea level on Moloka'i. The genus Idris s.l. of the tribe Baeini is predominantly endoparasitic on eggs of spiders. There are currently 30 species described from India, all of which are fully winged. Members of the cosmopolitan wasp tribe Baeini (Platygastridae s.l.) are obligate endoparasitoids of spider eggs. The group is estimated to have well over 2000 species globally, approximately 80% of which are undescribed. Most species belong to the genus Idris Förster s.l., a megadiverse group which is probably paraphyletic without the inclusion of a number of smaller genera. The group has resisted phylogenetic analysis using morphology largely due to convergence associated with reductional character states or, in the case of molecular analysis, insufficient taxon sampling and markers. To make any headway in understanding the diversity and relationships within the tribe, and particularly for the genus Idris, a pragmatic approach is to describe species groups that can be later incorporated into a broader sampling of taxa for molecular analysis. In taking this approach, we describe two new species from the Oriental region (India) with brachypterous females, Idris benakasp. nov. and Idris samuelisp. nov., which are assigned to a new species group, the 'benaka‐group'. These two species are morphologically similar to a number of undescribed Idris from Australia and southern Africa which, if related, point to a possible circum‐Indian Ocean distribution for this species group. A new species of Idris -- Idris semiflaviventris sp. n. -- belonging to the tribe Baeini is described from Kodaikanal in the Western Ghats, South India. A biogeographical study of the genus group Scotussae, a clade of grasshoppers endemic to the subtropical temperate region of the La Plata Basin, South America, was performed within a phylogenetic context to test whether wing reduction reflects evolutionary and ecological processes within the clade. We used an integrative biogeographical approach to determine the role of geohistorical events, geography, ecology and phylogenetic niche conservatism on the distribution and diversification processes of the group. We performed a total evidence phylogenetic analysis and tested the phylogenetic signal of ecological niche traits (niche optimum and niche breadth). We also assessed the degree to which phylogenetic distance is correlated with geographical and ecological niche traits and we used BioGeoBEARS to estimate ancestral ranges. The results provided evidence for phylogenetic niche conservatism as well as a significant association between phylogeny and both geographical and, more strongly, ecological traits. Two main clades were clearly associated with wing development, and evidence points to the evolutionary and ecological processes within these two groups being different. The Brachypterous clade shows evidence that allopatric speciation was the main source of diversification, while for the Macropterous clade sympatric speciation seems more likely. Megacraspedus cottiensis sp. nov. is described from the western Alps (prov. Torino, Italy). The dorsal habitus and genitalia for both the male and brachypterous female are provided. The new species belongs to the M. faunierensis species group based on genitalia morphology and DNA barcodes, and was hitherto confused with M. neli Huemer & Karsholt, 2018 from the southwestern Alps. However, it clearly differs in morphology and DNA barcode sequences from that species and from M. faunierensis Huemer & Karsholt, 2018. Six new species of Gnorimoschema Busck, 1900 are described: G. pamira sp. nov. (Tadzhikistan), G. brachyptera sp. nov. (Russia: Buryatia), G. altaica sp. nov. (Russia: Altai), G. tabazhok sp. nov. (Russia, Altai, Tuva), G. yakovlevi sp. nov. (Russia: Altai, Buryatia), G. kozlovi sp. nov. (Mongolia). A new synonym is established: G. mikkolai Povolný, 1994 syn. nov. of G. radkevichi Piskunov, 1980. Gnorimoschema montanum Povolný, 1966, sp. rev., stat. nov. is taken out from synonymy with G. soffneri (Riedl, 1965). This review considers factors affecting the flight capacity of carabid beetles and the implications of flight for carabids. Studies from the Dutch polders in particular show that young populations of carabids consist predominantly of macropterous species and macropterous individuals of wing-dimorphic species. Also populations of wing-dimorphic carabid species at the periphery of their geographical range contain high proportions of macropterous individuals. However, studies from Baltic archipelagos show that older populations of even highly isolated island habitats contain considerable proportions of brachypterous species and individuals. This suggests that macroptery is primarily an adaptation for dispersal and that there exists a mechanism for subsequently reducing the ratio of macropterous to brachypterous species under stable conditions, due to the competitive advantage of brachyptery. Populations in isolated habitats, such as islands and mountains, have high proportions of brachypterous species. Many macropterous species do not possess functional flight muscles. Species of unstable habitats, such as tree canopies and wet habitats, are mostly macropterous. Brachypterous species tend to disappear from disturbed habitats. There is uncertainty regarding the extent to which carabid dispersal is directed and how much passive. Both Den Boer and Lindroth recognized that mostly macropterous individuals of macropterous and wing-dimorphic species disperse and found new populations, after which brachyptery tends to rapidly appear and proliferate in the newly founded population. It is most likely that the allele for brachyptery would arrive via the dispersal of gravid females which had mated with brachypterous males prior to emigration. Whilst many studies consider wing morphology traits of carabid beetles to be species-specific and permanent, a number of studies have shown that the oogenesis flight syndrome, whereby females undertake migration and subsequently lose their flight muscles by histolysis before eventually regenerating them after reproducing, has been reported for a growing number of carabid species. Wing morphology of carabid beetles clearly offers strong potential for the study of population dynamics. This field of study flourished during the 1940's to the late 1980's. Whilst a considerable amount of valuable research has been performed and published, the topic clearly holds considerable potential for future study.

The taxonomy of the Palearctic genus Megacraspedus Zeller, 1839 (Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae) is revised, based on external morphology, genitalia and DNA barcodes. An integrative taxonomic approach supports the existence of 85 species which are arranged in 24 species groups (disputed taxa from other faunal regions are discussed). Morphology of all species is described and figured in detail. For 35 species both sexes are described; for 46 species only the male sex is reported, in one species the male is unknown, whereas in three species the female adult and/or genitalia morphology could not be analysed due to lack of material. DNA barcode sequences of the COI barcode fragment with > 500 bp were obtained from 264 specimens representing 62 species or about three-quarters of the species. Species delimitation is particularly difficult in a few widely distributed species with high and allegedly intraspecific DNA barcode divergence of nearly 14%, and with up to 23 BINs in a single species. Deep intraspecific or geographical splits in DNA barcode are frequently not supported by morphology, thus indicating a complex phylogeographic history or other unresolved molecular problems. Tomato spotted wilt orthotospovirus (TSWV) is a major disease in peanut, Arachis hypogaea L. across peanut producing regions of the United States and elsewhere. Two thrips, Frankliniella fusca Hinds and Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), are considered important vectors of TSWV in peanut in the Southeast. We compared the efficiency of acquisition (by larvae) and transmission (adults) of both thrips species for TSWV (Texas peanut-strain) to leaf disks of peanut (Florunner), as well as to Impatiens walleriana Hook. f. (Dwarf White Baby) and Petunia hybrida Juss. 'Fire Chief' using double antibody sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DAS-ELISA). Both species were competent TSWV vectors in peanut and Impatiens, although F. fusca was the more efficient vector overall, i.e. virus acquisition and transmission rates for F. fusca averaged over several bioassays were 51.7 and 26.6%, respectively, compared with 20.0 and 15.3% for F. occidentalis. Neither species effectively transmitted this TSWV strain to Petunia (i.e. ≤3.6% transmission). We found statistically similar virus acquisition and transmission rates between both sexes for each species. We also detected no differences in TSWV-acquisition and transmission frequency between macropterous and brachypterous (short-wing) forms of F. fusca collected from a field population in south Texas. A unique species, Gapudipentax guiting Lucañas gen. et sp. n. (Blattodea: Corydiidae: Latindiinae), is described from Sibuyan Island, Philippines. It differs from other genera in Latindiinae by its pentagonal pronotum, brachyptery in males and the absence in venation of the male tegmina. The species would be the fifth Corydiidae recorded from the country and the first from Sibuyan Island, Romblon. A brief discussion on species composition of Latindiinae is provided. Sexual activity is only a brief moment in the life of ant colonies, but it determines several characteristics of life history. Mating behaviour, distance of female dispersal and mode of colony foundation are interlinked. In species exhibiting 'male aggregation' (males and queens fly and mate away from natal nests), newly mated queens have no option but to found a colony alone (independent colony founding, ICF). In contrast, in 'female calling' species, queens mate close to the natal nests, then either fly or walk away for dispersal. In several species, they can also disperse on foot accompanied by nestmate workers (dependent colony founding, DCF). Here, we review field observations and genetic data to untangle dispersal strategies across the genus Cataglyphis. We complement these existing informations with queen thorax morphology and dissection of wing muscles. Our comparative study includes 18 species belonging to six species-groups. We found that female calling occurs across all clades, with only two species showing male aggregation. Although most species have normal flying queens specialized for ICF, species in three out of the six species-groups show DCF. Remarkably, species with DCF evolved short-winged 'brachypterous' queens that lack wing muscles. Relative size of their thorax sclerites can be used to predict lack of flight ability. Altogether, these results show a marked deviation from the breeding behaviour typical of most species in subfamily Formicinae. We revise the genus Prespelea Park, redefining and redescribing the two previously known species, P. copelandi Park and P. quirsfeldi Park, and adding ten new species: P. parki Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. minima Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. morsei Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. divergens Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. carltoni Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. myersae Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. georgiensis Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. enigma Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., P. wagneri Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n., and P. basalis Caterino & Vásquez-Vélez, sp. n.. The genus is still only known from a relatively small area in the southern Appalachian Mountains, but the diversity is much greater than previously suspected. The new species exhibit considerable diversity in male secondary sexual characters. A preliminary phylogenetic analysis cannot conclusively resolve the polarity of eye and wing reduction across Speleobamini, but the monophyly of Park's subgenus Fusjugama, if expanded to include all species with full-eyed and winged males, is not supported, and we therefore synonymize it with Prespelea s. str. Ackbaria vermiformis gen. & sp. nov. (Deltocephalinae: Faltalini) is described from Chile (Bío Bío and Araucanía Regions) and Argentina (La Pampa and Entre Ríos Provinces). It is differentiated from other Faltalini by the following combination of characters: narrow and dorsoventrally compressed body, brachypterous, forewing without reticulate venation, male pygofer with ventroapical tooth and side with 10-15 macrosetae dorsoapically, and female pygofer with many macrosetae. Delphacodes kuscheli, the main vector of maize Mal de Río Cuarto disease in Argentina, was used to analyze the effect of food quality on wing-form, demographic traits and number of yeast-like symbionts (YLS). First instar nymphs were caged on the leaf apex or on the ligular zone of oat plants, characterized by having low and high nutritional value respectively, and followed in their development to adulthood. Food quality affected the proportion of wing morphs, with an increased number of brachypterous individuals on the higher food quality zone. Macropterous and brachypterous females from the ligular zone had higher survivorship, shorter development time and higher number of YLS. For males, development time and number of YLS did not differ significantly in individuals fed from both zones, while body and wing length were superior in individuals fed on the ligular zone. Results suggest that females allocate the resources from feeding on a richer zone to reduce the pre-reproductive period and to increase the number of YLS, and males acquire a larger size while maintaining development time and YLS number. The Afrotropical subgenus Phornus Paulian, 1948 of the genus Orphnus MacLeay, 1819 is revised and currently comprises six species. Four new species are described: Orphnus renaudi sp. nov., Orphnus valeriae sp. nov., Orphnus ferrierei sp. nov. and Orphnus parastrangulatus sp. nov. The subgenus is characterized by the coarse stridulatory field, sclerotized plate on the second abdominal sternite near plectrum, absence of the pronotal lateral processes in males, rounded apices of the parameres and endophallus without armature, although some of these characters differ in O. giganteus Paulian, 1948. Symphysocery is reported for the first time for members of the Orphninae. In O. giganteus, the majority of specimens have malformed antennomeres. Four of the six species of Phornus are brachypterous and all species except for O. giganteus are known only from males. A key to Phornus species and a map of their localities are provided.

A new species, Psammoecuslordhowensis sp. nov. , is described from Lord Howe Island, Australia. The new species is brachypterous and most likely endemic to the island. This species is distinct and can be distinguished by the following morphological characters: body rounded and convex; eyes small; temples well developed; lateral pronotal teeth absent; and hind wing strongly reduced., (Takahiro Yoshida, Chris A. Bryanites graeffii sp. n. is described from Samoa based on a single male specimen collected between 1862-1870 that was recently discovered in the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris. Cladistic analysis based on 127 morphological characters from 49 exemplars of the carabid beetle tribe Platynini in the Austral-Pacific region, places the new species as adelphotaxon to Bryanites samoaensis Valentine, type species of the genus Bryanites Valentine, 1987. Bryanites comprises, along with Vitagonum Moore, 1998 of Fiji and Ctenognathus Fairmaire, 1843 of New Zealand, a clade that diverged early in the evolutionary history of Pacific platynine Carabidae. Bryanites graeffii exhibits very large body size among taxa of Platynini--16.2 mm standardized body length--with the genus characterized by vestigial flight wings and metathoracic apomorphies that are associated with flight-wing loss. Along with Blackburnia Sharp, 1878 of Hawaii, the origins of Bryanites, Vitagonum, and Ctenognathus are hypothesized to date to the Miocene, with their radiations beginning long before the origins of the geographically widespread, flight-capable species of Metacolpodes Jeannel, 1948 that colonized numerous island systems across the western Pacific. Given the numerous platynine taxa collected by extensive biotic surveys of Samoa during the first quarter of the 20th Century, the absence of any specimens of B. graeffii since the initial collection of the unique holotype prior to 1871 suggests that this species may be extinct. Such extirpation of large platynine carabid beetles has also been documented for Hawaii, where the time of extinction of seven Blackburnia species represented only by subfossil fragments coincides with the time of human colonization and attendant introduction of the Pacific rat, Rattus exulans (Peale). This review considers factors affecting the flight capacity of carabid beetles and the implications of flight for carabids. Studies from the Dutch polders in particular show that young populations of carabids consist predominantly of macropterous species and macropterous individuals of wing-dimorphic species. Also populations of wing-dimorphic carabid species at the periphery of their geographical range contain high proportions of macropterous individuals. However, studies from Baltic archipelagos show that older populations of even highly isolated island habitats contain considerable proportions of brachypterous species and individuals. This suggests that macroptery is primarily an adaptation for dispersal and that there exists a mechanism for subsequently reducing the ratio of macropterous to brachypterous species under stable conditions, due to the competitive advantage of brachyptery. Populations in isolated habitats, such as islands and mountains, have high proportions of brachypterous species. Many macropterous species do not possess functional flight muscles. Species of unstable habitats, such as tree canopies and wet habitats, are mostly macropterous. Brachypterous species tend to disappear from disturbed habitats. There is uncertainty regarding the extent to which carabid dispersal is directed and how much passive. Both Den Boer and Lindroth recognized that mostly macropterous individuals of macropterous and wing-dimorphic species disperse and found new populations, after which brachyptery tends to rapidly appear and proliferate in the newly founded population. It is most likely that the allele for brachyptery would arrive via the dispersal of gravid females which had mated with brachypterous males prior to emigration. Whilst many studies consider wing morphology traits of carabid beetles to be species-specific and permanent, a number of studies have shown that the oogenesis flight syndrome, whereby females undertake migration and subsequently lose their flight muscles by histolysis before eventually regenerating them after reproducing, has been reported for a growing number of carabid species. Wing morphology of carabid beetles clearly offers strong potential for the study of population dynamics. This field of study flourished during the 1940's to the late 1980's. Mechanisms of the suppression of gonadotropic activity of the corpus allatum (CA) in macropterous females were compared with those previously reported for either diapause or starving non-diapause brachypterous females by reciprocal transplantations of the neuroendocrine complexes (comprising the brain-suboesophageal ganglion-corpora cardiaca-CA). The denervated CA stimulated reproduction in most females of all experimental groups suggesting an inhibition of the CA via nervous connections with the brain. The inhibition of the CA within the transplanted neuroendocrine complex was measured by the reproductive performance of feeding recipient females deprived of their own CA. The complex from starving non-diapause brachypterous females stimulated reproduction in 58.3-78.9% of recipients suggesting that the inhibition of the CA was mostly overcome by the stimulating internal milieu of feeding females. In contrast, the "macropterous" complex stimulated reproduction in only 18.8-37.5% of recipients, similar to the "diapause brachypterous" complex (32.0%). The results indicate that the "macropterism", similar to the diapause, is associated with a considerably lower responsiveness of the neuroendocrine complex to humoral stimulation by feeding compared to the responsivenes of the "starving" complex from brachypterous non-diapause females. On the other hand, the CA of macropterous females is of intermediate size between that of the feeding non-diapause and diapause brachypterous females, similar to the CA of the non-diapause brachypterous females deprived of food. Overall, the data suggest that the suppression of the CA activity results from a combination of the diapause-like refractoriness of the neuroendocrine complex with the starvation-like inhibition of the CA growth. Regulation of the CA activity is discussed in relation to the "oogenesis-flight syndrome" recorded for flying wing-polymorphic species of insects.

The formicine weaver ant P olyrhachis australis Mayr is one among many species of ants that have queens of two more or less distinct sizes, usually referred to as microgynes and macrogynes. The current consensus explains this phenomenon in terms of alternative strategies of dispersal and reproduction: microgynes typically walk to found new nests locally, macrogynes typically fly to found new nests farther afield. This study addressed four questions bearing on that interpretation: is the dimorphism complete (without intermediate sizes) or continuous in P . australis? Does the proportion of macrogynes correlate with the number of queens in the nest? Does the microgyne/macrogyne proportion vary over time? And are brachypterous individuals always microgynes? The implications of these questions concern the fitness status of the intermediate size individuals, the relative fitnesses of the two main morphs as the number of queens diminishes, the influence of habitat conditions on the production of the morphs, and the dispersal behaviour of microgynes . The size distribution of P . australis queens was incompletely bimodal, with some individuals of intermediate size. The proportion of macrogynes in nests increased with decreasing numbers of queens in nests, suggesting that macrogynes do better in whatever contests take place between queens during the ergonomic stage. Between 2009 and 2014, the proportion of macrogynes in nests fell from about 1 in 3 or 4, to less than 1 in 11, perhaps reflecting a differential production of queen morphs in saturated and unsaturated habitats: it profits a colony to produce more microgynes and fewer macrogynes when local conditions favour the easy founding of new nests by walking. Brachyptery was centred on the smallest microgynes, consistent with their assumed mode of dispersal for which wings are not needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
