The broadnose sevengill shark, Notorynchus cepedianus (Péron, 1807), is a large marine top predator in temperate coastal ecosystems. Some aspects of its life history have been determined, but its growth pattern is yet to be fully understood. The authors used a multi‐modelling approach and a sensitivity test to estimate growth parameters from young‐of‐year (YOY) length data collected off San Antonio Cape (SAC), Argentina, a critical habitat in the Southwest Atlantic Coastal Zone (SACZ). The best selected model, a sex‐combined logistic growth model, estimated an asymptotic length (L∞) of 92.58 cm TL (95% C.I.: 86.48–105.89 cm), a growth coefficient (K) of 0.006818 days −1 (95% C.I.: 0.004948–0.008777) and a size at birth (L0) of 40.73 cm. The predicted annual growth (i.e., L1 –L0) was 43.2 cm TL. Males had smaller L0, higher K and achieved larger sizes after 1 year. The YOY in SAC attained a larger L1 and grew faster than their Australian and South African wild counterparts. The consistent year‐round presence of YOY in the SAC highlights the importance of this area as a pupping ground and potential nursery for N. cepedianus; this has direct implications for the allocation of research and management effort for the conservation of this species in the Southwest Atlantic. Growth curves were determined for four breeds of Brazilian locally adapted swine (Moura, Piau, Nilo and Monteiro) using nonlinear models. Data was collected on 13 morphological measurements of 220 animals of both sexes from 30 days of age to adult stages. Curves were fitted using nonlinear regression equations (Gompertz, Weibull, Logistic, Brody, Von Bertalanffy and Richards). The best curve was selected by the highest R2 and lowest root mean squared error. The Weibull function was the most suitable for all breeds and genders. In general, females reached their adult size earlier, but males were larger. On the one hand, the Moura breed is the most similar to industrial breeds one, possibly because it is reared in fattening systems. On the other hand, the Monteiro breed was a later-developing one. Brazilian pig breeds have different growth patterns, associated with the genetic origin of the breed and its adaptations to environment., No presente estudo objetivou-se determinar curvas de crescimento para quatro raças de suínos naturalizados do Brasil (Moura, Piau, Nilo e Monteiro) através de ajustes não lineares. Foram coletados dados de 13 medidas morfológicas de 220 exemplares de ambos os sexos entre os 30 dias de vida até a idade adulta. As curvas foram ajustadas usando regressão não linear, pelas equações de Gompertz, Weibull, Logística, Brody e Richards. A melhor função foi selecionada pelo maior R² e menor erro quadrático médio, sendo a função de Weibull a mais apropriada para todas as raças e sexos. No geral, as fêmeas de todas as raças atingiram as medidas adultas com mais precocidade, porém os machos cresceram mais do que as fêmeas. O crescimento da raça Moura é o que mais se assemelha ao crescimento das raças industriais, isso pode estar relacionado ao fato de grande parte dos exemplares serem criados em sistemas de engorda. Por outro lado, a raça Monteiro foi a que apresentou um crescimento mais tardio. Conclui-se que as raças de suínos naturalizados brasileiros possuem crescimento diferenciado, que está relacionado com a origem genética da raça e adaptação ao ambiente.

- Abstract
Reduced economic circumstances havemoved management goals towards higher profit, rather than maximum sustainable yields in several Australian fisheries. The eastern king prawn is one such fishery, for which we have developed new methodology for stock dynamics, calculation of model-based and data-based reference points and management strategy evaluation. The fishery is notable for the northward movement of prawns in eastern Australian waters, from the State jurisdiction of New South Wales to that of Queensland, as they grow to spawning size, so that vessels fishing in the northern deeper waters harvest more large prawns. Bioeconomic fishing data were standardized for calibrating a length-structured spatial operating model. Model simulations identified that reduced boat numbers and fishing effort could improve profitability while retaining viable fishing in each jurisdiction. Simulations also identified catch rate levels that were effective for monitoring in simple within-year effort-control rules. However, favourable performance of catch rate indicators was achieved only when a meaningful upper limit was placed on total allowed fishing effort. Themethods and findings will allow improved measures for monitoring fisheries and inform decision makers on the uncertainty and assumptions affecting economic indicators.

The large size, high trophic level and wide distribution of Hexanchiformes (cow and frilled sharks) should position this order as important apex predators in coastal and deep-water ecosystems. This review synthesizes available information on Hexanchiformes, including information not yet published, with the purpose of evaluating their conservation status and assessing their ecological roles in the dynamics of marine ecosystems. Comprising six species, this group has a wide global distribution, with members occurring from shallow coastal areas to depths of c. 2500 m. The limited information available on their reproductive biology suggests that they could be vulnerable to overexploitation (e.g. small litter sizes for most species and suspected long gestation periods). Most of the fishing pressure exerted on Hexanchiformes is in the form of commercial by-catch or recreational fishing. Comprehensive stock and impact assessments are unavailable for most species in most regions due to limited information on life history and catch and abundance time series. When hexanchiform species have been commercially harvested, however, they have been unable to sustain targeted fisheries for long periods. The potentially high vulnerability to intense fishing pressure warrants a conservative exploitation of this order until thorough quantitative assessments are conducted. At least some species have been shown to be significant apex predators in the systems they inhabit. Should Hexanchiformes be removed from coastal and deep-water systems, the lack of sympatric shark species that share the same resources suggests no other species would be capable of fulfilling their apex predator role in the short term. This has potential ecosystem consequences such as meso-predator release or trophic cascades. - Abstract
Standardisation of catch-per-effort (CPUE) data is an essential component for nearly all stock assessments. The first step in CPUE standardisation is to separate the comparable from the non-comparable catch and effort records and this is normally done based on subjective rules. In the present study, we used catch-and-effort data from the elephant fish (Callorhinchus milii) to illustrate the differences in CPUE when using expert judgement to define different ad hoc selection criteria used to subset these data. The data subsets were then used in the standardisation of CPUE and the stock assessment of elephant fish. The catch-and-effort subsets produced different patterns of precision and trends, each of which led to different estimates (and related uncertainty) of model parameters and management reference points. For most CPUE series, there was a very high probability that the elephant fish stock is overexploited and that overfishing is occurring. The estimates of total allowable catch (TAC) and the uncertainty around these estimates also varied considerably depending on the CPUE series used. Our study shows how sensitive TAC estimation is when there is high uncertainty in the definition of the fishing effort targeted at the species analysed.

- Abstract
Inclusive charged hadron production, e(+)e(-) --> e(+)e(-)h(+/-)X, is studied using 414 pb(-1) of data collected at LEP with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 202 GeV. Single particle inclusive differential cross sections are measured as a function of the particle transverse momentum, p(t), and pseudo-rapidity, eta. For p(1) less than or equal to 1.5 GeV, the data are well described by an exponential, typical of soft hadronic processes. For higher p(1), the onset of perturbative QCD processes is observed. The pi(+/-) production cross section for p(t) > 5 GeV is much higher than the NLO QCD predictions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Opportunistic sampling suggested a complex population structure for Squalus megalops in southeastern Australia. A total of 929 sharks were analyzed. The sex ratio was biased towards females and there was sexual size dimorphism, with females attaining a larger maximum size than males. Individual analysis of selected fishing shots suggested that S. megalops had a complex population structure, and was segregated by sex, size and breeding condition. Small females and males segregated from large females. In addition, large females in the first year of pregnancy seemed to be separated from those in the second year of pregnancy. Psammobatis extenta collected from the commercial bottom trawl fishery operating in Puerto Queque´n, Argentina, between 2000 and 2001, had a sex ratio of 1 : 1 (535 specimens). Both the largest male and female measured 313 mm total length (LT). The relationship between total body mass andLT was significantly different between sexes; mature females weighed more than mature males for a givenLT . The size at which 50% of males were sexually mature was 262 mm LT (83·6% of the maximum size), whereas 50% of females were mature at 249 mm LT (80·0% of the maximum size). The gonadosomatic index in mature males and females was slightly higher during summer, but did not show significant variation over the sampling period. The hepatosomatic index of males and females was higher during the autumn and winter and followed a distinct seasonal pattern. Evidence suggested a continuous reproductive cycle during the year, with a maximum number of females carrying egg-cases in summer. Copyright 2002 The Fisheries Society of the British Isles. Inclusive charged hadron production, e+e− → e+e−h±X, is studied using 414 pb−1 of data collected at LEP with the L3 detector at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 202 GeV. Single particle inclusive differential cross sections are measured as a function of the particle transverse momentum, pt , and pseudo-rapidity, η. For pt 1.5 GeV, the data are well described by an exponential, typical of soft hadronic processes. For higher pt , the onset of perturbative QCD processes is observed. - Abstract
The aim of this study was to perform a Bayesian genomewide association study (GWAS) to identify genomic regions associated with growth traits in Hereford and Braford cattle, and to select Tag-SNPs to represent these regions in low-density panels useful for genomic predictions. In addition, we propose candidate genes through functional enrichment analysis associated with growth traits using Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Phenotypic data from 126,290 animals and genotypes for 131 sires and 3,545 animals were used. The Tag-SNPs were selected with BayesB (π = 0.995) method to compose low-density panels. The number of Tag-single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) ranged between 79 and 103 SNP for the growth traits at weaning and between 78 and 100 SNP for the yearling growth traits. The average proportion of variance explained by Tag-SNP with BayesA was 0.29, 0.23, 0.32 and 0.19 for birthweight (BW), weaning weight (WW205), yearling weight (YW550) and postweaning gain (PWG345), respectively. For Tag-SNP with BayesA method accuracy values ranged from 0.13 to 0.30 for k-means and from 0.30 to 0.65 for random clustering of animals to compose reference and validation groups. Although genomic prediction accuracies were higher with the full marker panel, predictions with low-density panels retained on average 76% of the accuracy obtained with BayesB with full markers for growth traits. The MeSH analysis was able to translate genomic information providing biological meanings of more specific gene products related to the growth traits. - Abstract
The planarian suborder Cavernicola Sluys, 1990 was originally created to house five species of triclad flatworms with special morphological features and a surprisingly discontinuous and broad geographic distribution. These five species could not be accommodated with any degree of certainty in any of the three taxonomic groups existing at that moment, viz., Paludicola Hallez, 1892, Terricola Hallez, 1892, and Maricola Hallez, 1892. The scarce representation of the group and the peculiarities of the morphological features of the species, including several described more recently, have complicated new tests of the monophyly of the Cavernicola, the assessment of its taxonomic status, as well as the resolution of its internal relationships. Here we present the first molecular study including all genera currently known for the group, excepting one. We analysed newly generated 18S and 28S rDNA data for these species, together with a broad representation of other triclad flatworms. The resulting phylogenetic trees supported the monophyly of the Cavernicola, as well as its sister-group relationship to the Maricola. The sister-group relationship to the Maricola and affinities within the Cavernicola falsify the morphology-based phylogeny of the latter that was proposed previously. The relatively high diversity of some cavernicolan genera suggests that the presumed rarity of the group actually may in part be due to a collecting artefact. Ancestral state reconstruction analyses suggest that the ancestral habitat of the group concerned epigean freshwater conditions. Our results point to an evolutionary scenario in which the Cavernicola (a) originated in a freshwater habitat, (b) as the sister clade of the marine triclads, and (c) subsequently radiated and colonized both epigean and hypogean environments. Competition with other planarians, notably members of the Continenticola, or changes in epigean habitat conditions are two possible explanations -still to be tested- for the loss of most epigean diversity of the Cavernicola, which is currently reflected in their highly disjunct distributions., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. 50. Landscape genomic approach to detect selection signatures in locally adapted Brazilian swine genetic groups.

Samples of 191 animals from 18 different Brazilian locally adapted swine genetic groups were genotyped using Illumina Porcine SNP60 BeadChip in order to identify selection signatures related to the monthly variation of Brazilian environmental variables. Using BayeScan software, 71 SNP markers were identified as F
ST outliers and 60 genotypes (58 markers) were found by Samβada software in 371 logistic models correlated with 112 environmental variables. Five markers were identified in both methods, with a Kappa value of 0.073 (95% CI: 0.011-0.134). The frequency of these markers indicated a clear north-south country division that reflects Brazilian environmental differences in temperature, solar radiation, and precipitation. Global spatial territory correlation for environmental variables corroborates this finding (average Moran's I = 0.89, range from 0.55 to 0.97). The distribution of alleles over the territory was not strongly correlated with the breed/genetic groups. These results are congruent with previous mtDNA studies and should be used to direct germplasm collection for the National gene bank.- Published
