Search

Experimental studies have found unusual transport properties in Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$ which are potentially a consequence of the interplay between band-structure topology and electronic correlations. Based on these measurements, the existence of Weyl points in strongly renormalized, flat quasiparticle bands has been postulated. However, so far, there has been neither a direct spectroscopic observation of these, nor a calculation from first principles that would confirm their existence close to the Fermi energy. Here, we present density functional theory (DFT) and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations and study the low-energy excitations and their topological properties. We find that the Kondo effect promotes two out of the six angular momentum $J=5/2$ states, with the other four pushed to higher energies. Further, we find Weyl nodes close to the Fermi energy as previously suggested for explaining the observed giant spontaneous Hall effect in Ce$_3$Bi$_4$Pd$_3$, as well as nodal lines.

Mitigating the risks from frontier AI systems requires up-to-date and reliable information about those systems. Organizations that develop and deploy frontier systems have significant access to such information. By reporting safety-critical information to actors in government, industry, and civil society, these organizations could improve visibility into new and emerging risks posed by frontier systems. Equipped with this information, developers could make better informed decisions on risk management, while policymakers could design more targeted and robust regulatory infrastructure. We outline the key features of responsible reporting and propose mechanisms for implementing them in practice.

The investigation of the absolute scale of the effective neutrino mass remains challenging due to the exclusively weak interaction of neutrinos with all known particles in the standard model of particle physics. Currently, the most precise and least model-dependent upper limit on the electron antineutrino mass is set by the KATRIN experiment from the analysis of the tritium \b{eta}-decay. Another promising approach is the electron capture in $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$, which is under investigation using microcalorimetry within the ECHo and HOLMES collab orations. An independently measured Q-value of this process is vital for the assessment of systematic uncertainties in the neutrino mass determination. Here, we report a direct, independent determination of this $Q$-value by measuring the free-space cyclotron frequency ratio of highly charged ions of $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$ and $^{163}\mathrm{Dy}$ in the Penning trap experiment \textsc{Pentatrap}. Combining this ratio with atomic physics calculations of the electronic binding energies yields a $Q$-value of $2863.2(0.6)\,\mathrm{eV}/c^{2}$ - a more than 50-fold improvement over the state-of-the-art. This will enable the determination of the electron neutrino mass on a sub-eV level from the analysis of the electron capture in $^{163}\mathrm{Ho}$.

Middle school students' prosocial behavior, classroom engagement, and sense of belonging tend to decline across the school year. This study addressed whether these declines are associated with students' perceptions of their relationship with their teacher and the extent to which their teacher promoted respect among classmates. Self-report surveys were gathered in fall and spring from middle school students (N=351) in low-income, rural communities. Results indicated within-year declines for boys in prosocial behavior, affective engagement, belonging, student-teacher relationships, and teacher promotion of classroom respect; there were smaller to no effects for girls. However, when students perceived improvements in their teacher's social-emotional practices over the school year, they reported increased prosocial behavior, engagement and belonging at the end of the school year. Results were stronger for boys. These results suggest that students' perceptions of their teachers' social-emotional practices can have important implications for their engagement and social development across the school year, especially among boys. We study the impact of spin-orbit coupling on the topological band-properties of copper-substituted lead phosphate apatite using a combination of group-theoretical analysis and full-relativistic density-functional theory calculations. We characterize Weyl points at time-reversal invariant momenta and find that a band-inversion due to spin-orbit coupling leads to additional Weyl points close to the Fermi-edge at general momenta. To determine the position of the altogether 66 Weyl points in the Brilouin-zone, we develop an algorithm that follows a Berry-curvature-derived vector field to its monopole: the Weyl point. The emerging surface Fermi-arcs and their spin-polarization reveal avoided crossings and a Fermi-loop detached from the Weyl points.

We present a method to calculate the natural line width and energy dependent line shape due to fluorescence decay of core excited atoms within a full relativistic multi-reference configuration interaction theory. The atomic absorption lines show a deviation from a Lorentzian line-shape due to energy dependent matrix elements of the localized electronic state coupling to the photon field. This gives rise to spectral lines with small but visible asymmetry. One generally finds an excess of spectral weight at the high energy shoulder of the atomic absorption line. We present the example of nuclear decay of $^{55}$Fe by electron capture of an inner-shell core electron. We show that the amount of ionizing radiation in the energy window between 50 and 200 keV is around one order of magnitude larger due to the energy dependent fluorescence yield lifetime compared to the value one would obtain if one assumes a constant fluorescence decay rate. This yields a total change of energy deposited into ionizing radiation of about 1\textperthousand. Our calculations are in good agreement with previous calculations and experimental observations where data is available. Our results can be further validated by high precision measurements of electron capture nuclear decay spectra using recently developed experimental methods.

While CP violation in the Higgs interactions with massive vector boson is already tightly constrained, the CP nature of the Higgs interactions with fermions is far less constrained. In this work, we assess the potential of machine-learning-based inference methods to constrain CP violation in the Higgs top-Yukawa coupling. This approach enables the use of the full available kinematic information. Concentrating on top-associated Higgs production with the Higgs decaying to two photons, we derive expected exclusion bounds for the LHC and the high-luminosity phase of the LHC. We also study the dependence of these bounds on the Higgs interaction with massive vector bosons and their robustness against theoretical uncertainties. In addition to deriving expected exclusion bounds, we discuss at which level a non-zero CP-violating top-Yukawa coupling can be distinguished from the SM. This article summarizes the talk given at the LCWS 2021 conference on the status and news of the WHIZARD Monte Carlo event generator. We presented its features relevant for the physics program of future lepton and especially linear colliders as well as recent developments towards including NLO perturbative corrections and a UFO interface to study models beyond the Standard Model. State-of-the-art optical clocks achieve fractional precisions of $10^{-18}$ and below using ensembles of atoms in optical lattices or individual ions in radio-frequency traps. Promising candidates for novel clocks are highly charged ions (HCIs) and nuclear transitions, which are largely insensitive to external perturbations and reach wavelengths beyond the optical range, now becoming accessible to frequency combs. However, insufficiently accurate atomic structure calculations still hinder the identification of suitable transitions in HCIs. Here, we report on the discovery of a long-lived metastable electronic state in a HCI by measuring the mass difference of the ground and the excited state in Re, the first non-destructive, direct determination of an electronic excitation energy. This result agrees with our advanced calculations, and we confirmed them with an Os ion with the same electronic configuration. We used the high-precision Penning-trap mass spectrometer PENTATRAP, unique in its synchronous use of five individual traps for simultaneous mass measurements. The cyclotron frequency ratio $R$ of the ion in the ground state to the metastable state could be determined to a precision of $\delta R=1\cdot 10^{-11}$, unprecedented in the heavy atom regime. With a lifetime of about 130 days, the potential soft x-ray frequency reference at $\nu=4.86\cdot 10^{16}\,\text{Hz}$ has a linewidth of only $\Delta \nu\approx 5\cdot 10^{-8}\,\text{Hz}$, and one of the highest electronic quality factor ($Q=\frac{\nu}{\Delta \nu}\approx 10^{24}$) ever seen in an experiment. Our low uncertainty enables searching for more HCI soft x-ray clock transitions, needed for promising precision studies of fundamental physics in a thus far unexplored frontier.

Determining the electron neutrino mass by electron capture in $^{163}$Ho relies on an accurate understanding of the differential electron capture nuclear decay rate as a function of the distribution of the total decay energy between the neutrino and electronic excitations. The resulting spectrum is dominated by resonances due to local atomic multiplet states with core holes. Coulomb scattering between electrons couple the discrete atomic states, via Auger-Meitner decay, to final states with free electrons. The atomic multiplets are above the auto-ionisation energy, such that the delta functions representing these discrete levels turn into a superposition of Lorentzian, Mahan- and Fano-like line-shapes. We present an \textit{ab initio} method to calculate nuclear decay modifications due to such processes. It includes states with multiple correlated holes in local atomic orbitals interacting with unbound Auger-Meitner electrons. A strong energy-dependent, asymmetric broadening of the resonances in good agreement with recent experiments is found. We present a detailed analysis of the mechanisms determining the final spectral line-shape and discuss both the Fano interference between different resonances, as well as the energy dependence of the Auger-Meitner Coulomb matrix elements. The latter mechanism is shown to be the dominant channel responsible for the asymmetric line-shape of the resonances in the electron capture spectrum of $^{163}$Ho.

This summarizes the talk given at the LCWS 2019 conference in Sendai, Japan, on the progress of the WHIZARD event generator in terms of new physics features and technical improvements relevant for the physics programme of future lepton and especially linear colliders. Production of electron-positron pairs from vacuum in strong bichromatic electric fields, oscillating in time with a fundamental frequency and its second harmonic, is studied. Strong-field processes occuring in such field configurations are generally known to be sensitive to the relative phase between the field modes. Phase-of-the-phase spectroscopy has recently been introduced in the context of strong-field photoionization as a systematic means to analyze these coherence effects. We apply this method to field-induced pair production by calculating the phase dependence of the momentum-resolved particle yields. We show that asymmetric checkerboard patterns arise in the phase-of-the-phase spectra, similarly to those found in strong-field photoionization. In this paper we describe an approach to programming microcontrollers based on the Arduino platform using Datalog as a clear and concise description language for system behaviors. The application areas of cheap and easily programmable microcontrollers, like robotics, home automation, and IoT devices hold mainstream appeal and are often used as motivation in natural science and technology teaching. The choice of programming languages for microcontrollers is severely limited, especially with regard to rule-based declarative languages. We use an approach that is based on the Dedalus language augmented with operations that allow for side-effects and takes the limited resources of a microcontroller into account. The Future Circular Collider (FCC) at CERN, a proposed 100-km circular facility with several colliders in succession, culminates with a 100 TeV proton-proton collider. It offers a vast new domain of exploration in particle physics, with orders of magnitude advances in terms of Precision, Sensitivity and Energy. The implementation plan foresees, as a first step, an Electroweak Factory electron-positron collider. This high luminosity facility, operating between 90 and 365 GeV centre-of-mass energy, will study the heavy particles of the Standard Model, Z, W, Higgs, and top with unprecedented accuracy. The Electroweak Factory $e^+e^-$ collider constitutes a real challenge to the theory and to precision calculations, triggering the need for the development of new mathematical methods and software tools. A first workshop in 2018 had focused on the first FCC-ee stage, the Tera-Z, and confronted the theoretical status of precision Standard Model calculations on the Z-boson resonance to the experimental demands. The second workshop in January 2019, which is reported here, extended the scope to the next stages, with the production of W-bosons (FCC-ee-W), the Higgs boson (FCC-ee-H) and top quarks (FCC-ee-tt). In particular, the theoretical precision in the determination of the crucial input parameters, alpha_QED, alpha_QCD, M_W, m_t at the level of FCC-ee requirements is thoroughly discussed. The requirements on Standard Model theory calculations were spelled out, so as to meet the demanding accuracy of the FCC-ee experimental potential. The discussion of innovative methods and tools for multi-loop calculations was deepened. Furthermore, phenomenological analyses beyond the Standard Model were discussed, in particular the effective theory approaches. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a TeV-scale high-luminosity linear $e^+e^-$ collider under development at CERN. Following the CLIC conceptual design published in 2012, this report provides an overview of the CLIC project, its current status, and future developments. It presents the CLIC physics potential and reports on design, technology, and implementation aspects of the accelerator and the detector. CLIC is foreseen to be built and operated in stages, at centre-of-mass energies of 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV and 3 TeV, respectively. CLIC uses a two-beam acceleration scheme, in which 12 GHz accelerating structures are powered via a high-current drive beam. For the first stage, an alternative with X-band klystron powering is also considered. CLIC accelerator optimisation, technical developments and system tests have resulted in an increased energy efficiency (power around 170 MW) for the 380 GeV stage, together with a reduced cost estimate at the level of 6 billion CHF. The detector concept has been refined using improved software tools. Significant progress has been made on detector technology developments for the tracking and calorimetry systems. A wide range of CLIC physics studies has been conducted, both through full detector simulations and parametric studies, together providing a broad overview of the CLIC physics potential. Each of the three energy stages adds cornerstones of the full CLIC physics programme, such as Higgs width and couplings, top-quark properties, Higgs self-coupling, direct searches, and many precision electroweak measurements. The interpretation of the combined results gives crucial and accurate insight into new physics, largely complementary to LHC and HL-LHC. The construction of the first CLIC energy stage could start by 2026. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a mature option for the future of high energy physics. It combines the benefits of the clean environment of $e^+e^-$ colliders with operation at high centre-of-mass energies, allowing to probe scales beyond the reach of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for many scenarios of new physics. This places the CLIC project at a privileged spot in between the precision and energy frontiers, with capabilities that will significantly extend knowledge on both fronts at the end of the LHC era. We describe a new parallel approach to the evaluation of phase space for Monte-Carlo event generation, implemented within the framework of the WHIZARD package. The program realizes a twofold self-adaptive multi-channel parameterization of phase space and makes use of the standard OpenMP and MPI protocols for parallelization. The modern MPI3 feature of asynchronous communication is an essential ingredient of the computing model. Parallel numerical evaluation applies both to phase-space integration and to event generation, thus covering the most computing-intensive parts of physics simulation for a realistic collider environment., Comment: 28 pages, 4 figures

Processes where $W$ and $Z$ bosons scatter into pairs of electroweak bosons $W$, $Z$, and Higgs, are sensitive probes of new physics in the electroweak sector. We study simplified models that describe typical scenarios of new physics and parameterize the range of possible LHC results between the Standard-Model prediction and unitarity limits. Extending the study beyond purely longitudinal scattering, we investigate the role of transversally polarized gauge bosons. Unitarity becomes an essential factor, and limits on parameters matched to the naive perturbative low-energy effective theory turn out to be necessarily model-dependent. We discuss the implications of our approach for the interpretation of LHC data on vector-boson scattering and Higgs-pair production.

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a proposed future high-luminosity linear electron-positron collider operating at three energy stages, with nominal centre-of-mass energies: 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV, and 3 TeV. Its aim is to explore the energy frontier, providing sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) and precision measurements of Standard Model processes with an emphasis on Higgs boson and top-quark physics. The opportunities for top-quark physics at CLIC are discussed in this paper. The initial stage of operation focuses on top-quark pair production measurements, as well as the search for rare flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) top-quark decays. It also includes a top-quark pair production threshold scan around 350 GeV which provides a precise measurement of the top-quark mass in a well-defined theoretical framework. At the higher-energy stages, studies are made of top-quark pairs produced in association with other particles. A study of ttH production including the extraction of the top Yukawa coupling is presented as well as a study of vector boson fusion (VBF) production, which gives direct access to high-energy electroweak interactions. Operation above 1 TeV leads to more highly collimated jet environments where dedicated methods are used to analyse the jet constituents. These techniques enable studies of the top-quark pair production, and hence the sensitivity to BSM physics, to be extended to higher energies.
