Abstract

Wind speed retrieval at sea surface is of primary importance for scientific and operational applications. Besides weather models, in-situ measurements and remote sensing technologies, especially satellite sensors, provide complementary means to monitor wind speed. As sea surface winds produce sounds that propagate underwater, underwater acoustics recordings can also deliver fine-grained wind-related information. Whereas model-driven schemes, especially data assimilation approaches, are the state-of-the-art schemes to address inverse problems in geoscience, machine learning techniques become more and more appealing to fully exploit the potential of observation datasets. Here, we introduce a deep learning approach for the retrieval of wind speed time series from underwater acoustics possibly complemented by other data sources such as weather model reanalyses. Our approach bridges data assimilation and learning-based frameworks to benefit both from prior physical knowledge and computational efficiency. Numerical experiments on real data demonstrate that we outperform the state-of-the-art data-driven methods with a relative gain up to 16% in terms of RMSE. Interestingly, these results support the relevance of the time dynamics of underwater acoustic data to better inform the time evolution of wind speed. They also show that multimodal data, here underwater acoustics data combined with ECMWF reanalysis data, may further improve the reconstruction performance, including the robustness with respect to missing underwater acoustics data., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Recent European strategic plans for the successful monitoring of the status of the ocean push on the development of an integrated observing system able to further link existing instruments and techniques with the aim to complement each other and answer open issues. A more intensive use of acoustic devices could contribute to the knowledge of oceanographic processes exploiting the characteristic of sound to travel in the ocean for a wide area than in the atmosphere. In this context, the installation of passive acoustic instruments, able to listen to ambient noise on fixed or mobile platforms, could contribute to provide information on sound budget and to enhance the monitoring capacity of meteorological phenomena also in the open ocean. Instead, the deployment of active acoustic instruments can be of benefit for monitoring biological activities through the analysis of backscatter data as well as for monitoring ocean waves.

Abstract

Accurate and traceable measurements are required to understand ocean processes, to address pressing societal challenges, such as climate change and to sustainably manage marine resources. Although scientific and engineering research has resulted in advanced methods to measure Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) there is a need for cross comparison of the techniques and traceability to recognized standards. Metrological laboratories are experienced in accredited methods and assessment of methodology. An EU INFRAIA-02-2020: Integrating Activities for Starting Communities project MINKE (Metrology for Integrated marine maNagement and Knowledge-transfer nEtwork https://minke.eu) brings European marine science and metrology Research Infrastructures together to identify synergies and create an innovative approach to Quality Assurance of oceanographic data. Quality depends both on the accuracy (that can be provided through the metrology component) and the completeness of the data sets. The collaboration between different Marine Research Infrastructures (RIs) places a fundamental role on assuring the completeness of the datasets, particularly at global scales. The MINKE project encourages enhancement through collaboration of national metrology laboratories and the oceanographic community. Metrological assessment of the accuracy and uncertainties within multidisciplinary ocean observations will provide data that are key to delivering policy information. Objectives across all the RIs are to facilitate ocean observation and build wider synergies. MINKE will investigate these synergies, then introduce metrology to the core of various EOV measurements. Currently the marine RIs cover laboratory and field operations, from the surface seafloor, coastal waters to deep sea, fixed ocean stations to ship and autonomous vehicle operations to ships of opportunity, and flux stations focusing on carbonate system variables. Abstract

Echo-sounders and Vessel-Mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (VM-ADCP) are widely operating onboard research vessels with the aim of providing real-time backscatter and ocean current profiles along the route, while the vessel is moving. Backscatter data are exploited to infer important information about zooplankton presence and distribution. Nevertheless, as these organisms daily vertically migrate even below the depth of the instrument range, the combination of space and time variability make their mapping from a moving vessel quite complex. The objective of this work is to describe a GIS application developed for the management and analysis of these data. The GIS capability as a tool to facilitate zooplankton investigations is assessed by means of a test-case in the area of the Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean) by using VM-ADCP backscatter data made available during oceanographic campaigns. The system, which includes a high-resolution bathymetry, environmental parameters, ephemeris, allows to select and visualize data sorted according to all the possible layer combinations. Abstract

International audience; Because it depends on multiple atmospheric and oceanographic variables interacting with each other at the sea surface, accurately forecasting offshore surface wind speed is challenging for oceanographers. However, with the expansion of today's Big Ocean Data, the same offshore site can now be monitored by multiple sensors such as hydrophones, satellites or weather buoys. These data are highly heterogeneous, but each of them can potentially bring complementary information on an ocean process. In this paper, a deep generative model is designed to jointly represent Underwater Passive Acoustics (UPA) and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images into the same latent space to describe surface wind speed located in the Ligurian Sea (North Western Mediterranean Sea). Qualitative and quantitative results obtained demonstrate that SAR images are able to refine the estimation of UPA for low wind speeds.

Abstract

Underwater noise analysis allows estimation of parameters of meteorological interest, difficult to monitor with in situ devices, especially in very harsh environments such as polar waters. Rainfall detection is a fundamental step of acoustical meteorology toward quantifying precipitation and, indirectly, wind. To date, this task has been conducted with some success by using a few frequency bins of the noise spectrum and combining their absolute values and slopes into some inequalities. Unfortunately, these algorithms do not perform well when applied to spectra obtained by averaging multiple noise recordings made over the course of an hour. Supervised, machine learning models allow the use of all the frequency bins in the spectrum, exploiting relationships that are difficult for a human observer to identify. Among the different models tested, a binary classifier based on random forest performed well with moderate computational load. Using a dataset consisting of over 18 000 hourly averaged spectra (approximately 25 months of in situ recordings) and comparing the results with measurements from a surface-mounted rain gauge, the proposed system detects precipitations greater than 1 mm/h with 90% probability, keeping the false alarm probability below 0.5%. This system has demonstrated remarkable robustness as performance is achieved without intentionally excluding any spectra corrupted by sounds produced by other sources, such as naval traffic and wind blowing over the sea surface. Abstract

The European Research Infrastructure Consortium “Integrated Carbon Observation System” (ICOS) aims at delivering high quality greenhouse gas (GHG) observations and derived data products (e.g., regional GHG-flux maps) for constraining the GHG balance on a European level, on a sustained long-term basis. The marine domain (ICOS-Oceans) currently consists of 11 Ship of Opportunity lines (SOOP – Ship of Opportunity Program) and 10 Fixed Ocean Stations (FOSs) spread across European waters, including the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans and the Barents, North, Baltic, and Mediterranean Seas. The stations operate in a harmonized and standardized way based on community-proven protocols and methods for ocean GHG observations, improving operational conformity as well as quality control and assurance of the data. This enables the network to focus on long term research into the marine carbon cycle and the anthropogenic carbon sink, while preparing the network to include other GHG fluxes. ICOS data are processed on a near real-time basis and will be published on the ICOS Carbon Portal (CP), allowing monthly estimates of CO2 air-sea exchange to be quantified for European waters. ICOS establishes transparent operational data management routines following the FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) guiding principles allowing amongst others reproducibility, interoperability, and traceability. The ICOS-Oceans network is actively integrating with the atmospheric (e.g., improved atmospheric measurements onboard SOOP lines) and ecosystem (e.g., oceanic direct gas flux measurements) domains of ICOS, and utilizes techniques developed by the ICOS Central Facilities and the CP. There is a strong interaction with the international ocean carbon cycle community to enhance interoperability and harmonize data flow. Abstract

International audience; Fixed point observatories in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea have a major contribution in monitoring physical and biogeochemical variables in the region. The capability of recording long-term, high quality time-series, using smart sensors, upgrades scientific knowledge regarding sea processes sensitive to climate change. Existing open sea multi-parametric moorings are located in the key areas where dynamic processes (e.g. convection, ventilation) and bio-regions (from high bloom to intermittent regimes) drive biogeochemical content that are essential to the carbon pump and the marine ecosystem (nutrients, oxygen, pH, pCO2). For the last 5 years, new biogeochemical sensors (O2, pCO2 and pH) have been integrated in the open sea fixed moorings (ERIC EMSO and others), on gliders and Argo floats (MOOSE network) in this region to deliver integrated data relevant for marine environmental studies and monitoring services. We will present here the last biogeochemical O2, pCO2 and pH time series that could be used to derive the net air-sea CO2 flux and to estimate the acidification trend in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, a crucial region for ventilation and anthropogenic CO2 invasion.

Abstract

The Mediterranean community represented in this paper is the result of more than 30 years of EU and nationally funded coordination, which has led to key contributions in science concepts and operational initiatives. Together with the establishment of operational services, the community has coordinated with universities, research centers, research infrastructures and private companies to implement advanced multi-platform and integrated observing and forecasting systems that facilitate the advancement of operational services, scientific achievements and mission-oriented innovation. Thus, the community can respond to societal challenges and stakeholders needs, developing a variety of fit-for-purpose services such as the Copernicus Marine Service. The combination of state-of-the-art observations and forecasting provides new opportunities for downstream services in response to the needs of the heavily populated Mediterranean coastal areas and to climate change. The challenge over the next decade is to sustain ocean observations within the research community, to monitor the variability at small scales, e.g., the mesoscale/submesoscale, to resolve the sub-basin/seasonal and inter-annual variability in the circulation, and thus establish the decadal variability, understand and correct the model-associated biases and to enhance model-data integration and ensemble forecasting for uncertainty estimation. Better knowledge and understanding of the level of Mediterranean variability will enable a subsequent evaluation of the impacts and mitigation of the effect of human activities and climate change on the biodiversity and the ecosystem, which will support environmental assessments and decisions. Given their vast dimensions and internal complexity, efficient monitoring and predicting of the planet's ocean must be a collaborative effort of both regional and global scale. A first and foremost requirement for such collaborative ocean observing is the need to follow well-defined and reproducible methods across activities: from strategies for structuring observing systems, sensor deployment and usage, and the generation of data and information products, to ethical and governance aspects when executing ocean observing. To meet the urgent, planet-wide challenges we face, methods across all aspects of ocean observing should be broadly adopted by the ocean community and, where appropriate, should evolve into "Ocean Best Practices." While many groups have created best practices, they are scattered across the Web or buried in local repositories and many have yet to be digitized. To reduce this fragmentation, we introduce a new open access, permanent, digital repository of best practices documentation (oceanbestpractices.org ) that is part of the Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS). The new OBPS provides an opportunity space for the centralized and coordinated improvement of ocean observing methods. The OBPS repository employs user-friendly software to significantly improve discovery and access to methods. The software includes advanced semantic technologies for search capabilities to enhance repository operations. In addition to the repository, the OBPS also includes a peer reviewed journal research topic, a forum for community discussion and a training activity for use of best practices. Together, these components serve to realize a core objective of the OBPS, which is to enable the ocean community to create superior methods for every activity in ocean observing from research to operations to applications that are agreed upon and broadly adopted across communities. Abstract

International audience; Existing coastal observatories in European waters are composed of platforms such as moored buoys, piles, profiling systems, gliders, ';ferryboxes' and automated systems on board of ships of opportunity. JERICO project strives to integrate existing infrastructures and provides a platform for the identification and dissemination of best practices for the design, implementation, operation and maintenance of observing systems and the dissemination of data. In order to reach these objectives several kinds of actions are undertaken, amongst which the offer of Trans-National Access (TNA) to a number of coastal observatories and calibration facilities for international research and technology development. This presentation will give a short overview of the selected TNA proposals and a focus will be drawn on some of the TNA results. Calibrating sensors regularly is the prime requirement for getting reliable data from coastal observatories and ensuring their long-term relevance as viable providers of information on the marine environment. The calibration facilities at the HCMR complex in Crete hosted users for calibration experiments. The first one was accessed by a HCMR team to improve their experience in calibrating high-quality oceanographic temperature sensors using primary ITS-90 reference standards. The experiment involved full calibrations of two SBE 35 thermometers from Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc. owned by the HCMR that will be used as reference sensors for temperature measurements in their calibration laboratory in Crete. Gliders make oceanographic measurements traditionally collected by research vessels or moored instruments, but at a fraction of the costs. The GESEBB glider Mission started in July 2013, in the southeastern Bay of Biscay. The objective of the mission is sampling the characteristics of a mesoscale eddy that appears in the southeastern Bay of Biscay, during spring and summer. The origin of this structure is associated with the strength and extension of a winter warm flow on the cantabrian slope. Since this eddy is retained in the study area during months, it is expected that during Jul.-Aug. 2013 it will be close to the position observed in the previous figures Fixed platforms allow long term -sensor testing and -measurements. The presented experiment is led by CNRS/OBS-VLFR and consists in the implementation of automatic Dissolved Oxygen (DO) measurements in the mooring operated by CNR/ISMAR in the Corsica Channel (Ligurian Sea). The deployment began in Nov. 2012 and lasted for twelve months. The final purpose of the research is to integrate the DO concentration in the long term time series data in the Ligurian basin to track and evaluate the water mass variability and to estimate the time lag between the eastern and the western part of the Ligurian Sea. The development of high-quality and comprehensive coastal observing systems has only recently moved forward, principally at national and regional level. In this overall context, the JERICO project aims at creating a solid and transparent organization towards an operational service for the continuous and sustainable delivery of high quality environmental data and information products related to the marine environment in European coastal and shelf seas. It promotes joint research initiatives and standardisation as illustrated by TNA experiments.
