BACKGROUND: Asprosin is a novel fasting-induced, glucogenic, and orexigenic protein hormone that is discovered with the help of genetic studies in patients with neonatal progeroid syndrome. Asprosin is encoded by the penultimate 2 exons (65 and 66) of the fibrillin 1 (FBN1) gene. Profibrillin 1 is the unprocessed protein product of FBN1 and undergoes a proteolytic cleavage by furin enzyme to produce mature fibrillin 1 and asprosin. The main organ responsible for the asprosin production seems to be white adipose tissue. SUMMARY: Asprosin promotes hepatic glucose release in the liver and appetite stimulation in the hypothalamus through activation of the cAMP signaling circuitry through interacting with its G protein-coupled receptor, called OR4M1. Increasing mass of evidence suggests that asprosin is involved in the development and progression of various clinical conditions including diabetes, obesity, cardiomyopathy, cancer, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. It regulates various cellular and physiological processes such as appetite stimulation, glucose release, insulin secretion, apoptotic cell death, and inflammatory response. In this review, we discuss the current literature on asprosin and try to shed light on the yet undiscovered functions of asprosin. KEY MESSAGE: Asprosin is a key regulatory factor for preserving the homeostasis of energy metabolism.

In present study, DNAprotection, antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of Teucrium multicauleMontbret Et Aucher Ex Bentham methanol extract (TME) was investigated.Cytotoxic effects and antioxidant activities of TME was determined by MTT andDPPH scavenging and DNA protection methods. As a result, high dose of TMEexhibited a cytotoxic effect on murine L cells. Although, TME also showed astrong antimutagenic activity in DNA protection test system, it exhibitedmodest activity in DPPH test system. Consequently, it may be used as naturalagent for antioxidant and antimutagenic properties.

Medicinalproperties of Vincetoxicum genus havebeen known for a long time. Leaves, dry seeds, and rhizomes of some Vincetoxicum species have been used infolk medicine for the treatment of injuries, scabies, neurosis, scrofula,malaria, wound, fever, rupture, and external cancers. The present study focusedon evaluating anti(myco)bacterial, antifungal, and antiproliferative activitiesof seeds of V. canescens subsp. canescens and V. cancescens subsp. pedunculata(endemic). Ethanol and hexane extracts of seeds of two plants were testedagainst three fungalstrains (Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Candida glabrata), two Gram-positive bacterial strains (Bacillussubtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), three Gram-negative bacterialstrains (Aeromonas hydrophila,Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacter baumannii), and Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv using broth microdilution method.Fluconazole, Ethambutol, Ampicillin, and Isoniazid were used as reference drugs.Antiproliferative effects of various concentrations (200, 100, 50, and 25μg/mL) of ethanol and hexane extracts were tested against A549 human lungcancer cell lines using MTT test. The ethanol extracts were found to be moreeffective against A. baumannii (62.5µg/mL MIC value) than Ampicillin (125 µg/mL MIC value).
